A New Overseas Center

This one has been rumored for a while, but here’s the word.

The Canarias Basketball Academy are pleased to announce that the 6’11, 265lb native of the Netherlands , Shaquille Doorson has committed to play for Head coach Jamie Dixon at the University of Pittsburgh. The 1 year CBA post graduate student is delighted with the opportunity to be an integral piece of a leading program who compete in the prestigious ACC: “This was always the goal for me and the reason why I came to CBA. My dream has come true, to know I’ll be playing in the ACC under a great coach and at a great program in a power house conference. I can only thank Rob Orellana and his coaching staff for pushing me everyday to make this dream become a reality”.

Canarias is a European basketball academy. This past week, another center from CBA signed with Louisville.

Doorson is probably closer to 6-10 than 6-11. CBA’s Coach Rob Orellana is close with Pitt assistant coach Barry Rohrssen, so there’s the tie-in that led to this.

I know this will shock you, but Doorson is raw and not a particularly known quantity. High ceiling, but may take some time.

From the peanut gallery:

How much eligibility does he have (it wasn’t clear). 1 yr, 4 yr. or something else. Nothing I read provides that detail. With a 1st name of Shaquille, how can we lose!

And we can’t find centers here, why?

Comment by MariettaMike 11.22.13 @ 8:58 am

Great pick-up and pleasant surprise. Practicing with and playing behind Randall and (hopefully) Uchebo next year will afford him a good learning experience.

Further, unless he also has 17 siblings, I doubt that he will be ‘one-and-done’ or even ‘two-and-adieu’, judging from what I read above.

Slice strikes again.

Comment by wbb 11.22.13 @ 9:00 am

Would be great to get more details (aside from raw’) regarding his strengths and weaknesses. How would he be graded on Defense, rebounding, movement, leaping, shooting, low post moves? If all he could do was rebound, defend and dunk, and had decent athleticism, that’d be great for the center position.

Comment by 1618mt 11.22.13 @ 9:10 am

Fill that pipeline,Euros usually good shots.

Way to go Slice.

Comment by gc 11.22.13 @ 9:35 am

Somewhere between Lucious Keese and Steve Adams talent wise?

Comment by Dan 72 11.22.13 @ 9:50 am

In general, I’ve noticed ever since Barry Rohrsen got back, things have been ticking back up for Pitt.

Comment by Dan 11.22.13 @ 9:56 am

Did Jeter, Luther, and Doorson sign LOI’s? Usually Pitt puts out a press release when bball LOI’s come in but I dont remember seeing one on these 3.

Comment by SMF 11.22.13 @ 10:28 am

He doesn’t look very athletic from his promo video. Looks like he can barely jump, he’s not getting very high above the rim for a 6’11” kid. link to youtube.com

I’m pretty skeptical about this recruiting class to be honest. Jeter was nothing special at Vandy and the SEC is pretty bad at basketball quite frankly. I don’t mean to keep knocking the kid, but would UNC or Duke or Syracuse or Louisville have taken Luther if he was in their backyard? Really doubt it. And now we get some project Euro center? Jesus.

I’m just not buying it. Dixon should be capable of landing more Mike Young/Detrick Mostella’s not these guys. I doubt any of these 3 are Final 4 quality players.

Comment by PittHW 11.22.13 @ 10:50 am

After watching that YouTube link he provided, I agree with PittHW on this kid’s apparent lack of hops, plus is he the SKINNIEST 265 lb guy that I’ve ever seen, or what? I expected to see somewhat of a more imposing physic!

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.22.13 @ 11:16 am

Aaron Gray couldn’t jump, let alone walk and chew gum at the same time as a freshman.. just saying…

Comment by LowerEastSide Panther 11.22.13 @ 11:36 am

two and adieu…lol wbb

Kid’s from the Netherlands (Holland). Wonder if he wears wooden shoes. 🙂

If he has impressive dunks, we already have a nickname for him…….
…………..The Flying Dutchman

Comment by EMel 11.22.13 @ 11:39 am

After watching that youtube,

I think I have my answer. Kid wear wooden tennis shoes me thinks. Double Yoi

Comment by EMel 11.22.13 @ 11:50 am

Didn’t know Admiral Canaris was still alive.

And running a basketball academy. Crazzzy.

Comment by EMel 11.22.13 @ 11:53 am

Love it! Coach him up to become the next Aaron Gray. No more Steve Adams’, please. Nothing against the kid, but this one-and-done stuff is baloney.

Comment by HbgFrank 11.22.13 @ 12:16 pm

He certainly looks big and strong. Redshirt?

Comment by gc 11.22.13 @ 12:19 pm

Glad to see them land a center. Uchebo’s knee is still a major concern.

Hope they got the right one. Combine that YouTube video with his age, almost 20, born 2/23/94, and I’m not sure I see that same high ceiling.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 11.22.13 @ 12:39 pm

If Rohrsen likes him that’s good enough for me. But of course you arm chair athletes know way more about talent than the coaching staff

Comment by Chick 11.22.13 @ 12:49 pm

He is playing in Connecticut this weekend .. Dixon will be there.

He certainly appears to be a project … much more than Adams. Howvever, in 2 years, if he can provide rebounding and defense down low, he can become an asset.

Comment by wbb 11.22.13 @ 1:26 pm

EMel .. nice nickname .. hope he can fly and has the hops to dunk .. but can’t have that in the nickname though .. Rik Smits already has the Dunkin Dutchman.

Comment by Tomas 11.22.13 @ 1:33 pm

Great pick up.

Comment by notrocketscience 11.22.13 @ 2:18 pm

If the Netherlands played Holland in football (soccer), who would the Dutch cheer for??

Comment by Dan 11.22.13 @ 2:35 pm

Is this another one of those:

enigma wrapped in a riddle thingies Dan-o ?

Since it is November 22nd.

RIP JFK

Comment by EMel 11.22.13 @ 5:20 pm

Speaking of un-athletic centers at Pitt….remember Aaron Gray when he came to Pitt? He couldn’t jump over the cracks in the Oakland sidewalks…

(probably still can’t) 🙂

Comment by Jackagain 11.22.13 @ 6:27 pm

I think Barry Rohrssen and Jamie Dixon know what qualities they are looking for, in the players they want. I think getting Rohrssen back on the staff was big development. Pitt will never get the top blue chippers, so they will always need to go after players with qualities that they like who they think they can develop into better ball players. Go Panthers!

Comment by Justinian 11.22.13 @ 6:37 pm

Jacksagain, They did a great job with Aaron Gray and he became a very good center. His last year at Pitt, before he injured his ankle in the Washington game, he was having a terrific year. I think they know what they’re doing.

Comment by Justinian 11.22.13 @ 7:22 pm

Dan, I think they would go Dutch treat and the guys from Holland and from the Netherlands would each pay their own way. ……….and each would cheer for the other!

Comment by Justinian 11.22.13 @ 7:28 pm

Now here’s the best part: Check out the video again, he’s ambidextrous!

Comment by steve1 11.22.13 @ 7:38 pm

No surprise that Slice is back and we are picking up good recruits! Some people can just flat out talk about the program and be very persuasive about what they say! He’s the man! And we will see Pitt will be better with him back! The football team needs someone like this on their staff besides the WR coach! God bless the hoops program and I hope we all enjoy what they are doing!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 11.22.13 @ 11:54 pm

according to Dokish twitter, Doorson, who played in CT last night, looks to be ‘tough’, ‘mean’ and a good rebounder. There are some issues about his hands, though

Comment by wbb 11.23.13 @ 7:42 am

Shaq of the “Ack” (ACC) has a nice ring to it. HTP!

Every team in he country has at least 1 Mcdonald’s All-american if not 3. Dixon is getting these 2 local kids and we all know that Western Pa is not a basketball hotbed. Does he even put any effort into recruiting at all ? Seems uninspired / lazy in this aspect.

Comment by daddylonglegs 11.23.13 @ 11:46 am

daddy, Steven Adams, from New Zealand, shows just how lazy Dixon is about recruiting. Pitt just graduated a McDonald’s All-American. Every team has at least one if not three McDonald’s All-Americans? Are you informed at all?

PittHW, star rankings have proven to be so reliable. You do remember Dante Taylor? You do know that Mike Young was interested in Pitt because he is a native of McKeesport/Duquesne and is therefore “local”?

Luther is a 6’8″ three star that can shoot, pass, dribble and rebound based upon what I have read. That sounds like the same skill set as Mike Young. Luther had offers from other BCS schools.

Let’s trust that Dixon knows what he is doing. He’s made the last eleven years the best in Pitt history. This year’s team looks great so far and a lot of these guys are three star recruits.

BIG missed tackle by Hendricks

Comment by alcofan 11.23.13 @ 1:39 pm

Dixon and Slice have had great success with this type of recruit

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.25.13 @ 10:30 am

I have to laugh at those posting here criticizing Dixon’s recruiting. One could argue that he is a horrible recruiter, but if that is true he is one of best developers of talent in the history of the game. Check his record against the Calhouns, Petinos, and Boeheims. The trick isn’t to attract the players with the biggest reputation it is to attract the ones who win the most games. It also helps if those players graduate and become decent citizens. How is everyones dream recruit Mr Hairston doing at North Carolina as an example? I see Kehm Birch still hasn’t come close to living up to all the hype at UNLV. Dixon and Slice are doing great, leave them alone.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.25.13 @ 11:25 am

I think we are going to punish Texas Tech in NYC tonight. The line is now 11.5 and we will cover that before the half.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.25.13 @ 12:59 pm

Big game tonite, anyone out there planning to watch?
