Light Football Thoughts

Sorry. Not a lot of time today, so I kind of have to keep it shallow.

Paul Chryst gets effusive about UNC’s tight end, Eric Ebron.

“You love watching him on tape, and then all of a sudden you’re like, ‘Shoot, we’ve got to play him,’” Chryst said. “He’s good, and I love a good tight end.”

That would have 12-year-old me 16-year-old me 22-year-old me Oh, hell it still has me snickering.

Paul Chryst also addressed the viral video of him dancing. He apparently was not as pleased with it as everyone else.

The video went viral, which didn’t please Chryst, but he said he learned a lesson.

“The locker rooms used to be sacred,” he said, “and shame on me for being so naive. But we’re taking care of measures to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

Chryst said he hadn’t seen it. “My kids looked at it and said, ‘Thanks a lot, Dad.’ ”

By Thursday afternoon, the eight-second video had 27,019 views on You Tube.

I really, really hope this is an example of his dry sense of humor. That video — yes, almost certainly cringe-worthy for him — was perfect. It was Chryst showing fun, emotion and just being a little more than simply a coach.

The O-line was strong against Notre Dame. Can they show it wasn’t just getting up for one game against the Irish? I have no idea.

ACC Network telecast, but they are airing a few games, so not all ACC Network affiliates will be showing it. I can’t make it to the game this week. Here’s the list. Damn. Guess I’m watching on ESPN3.com

If you heard the quote that Chryst discussing his dancing was from (the ACC teleconference), he sounds pretty amused/laughing as he’s saying it. Just looks out of context in print.

For the first time since he was hirled we realized he was a human and had a bit of a personality. Only to have him bothered by the whole thing. Relax Chryst its okay to actually look like you enjoy life every once in a while. Geez

Comment by Upittbaseball 11.15.13 @ 9:03 am

It was good for his public image but from the player reaction they weren’t shocked.
I agree he would laugh it off but he also has the ‘what happens in the locker room, stays in the locker room’ mentality that some people have complain about.
Personally, I think that mentality is great. Who is the jackass that took the video?

Comment by notrocketscience 11.15.13 @ 9:04 am

UNC will present an athletic, speedy (ACC-type) DL as opposed to a large, bulky (B10-type) like ND’s. Pitt’s OL has had issues with speed rushers for the past 3 years.

This is my primary concern; the 2nd being the athletic UNC QB that also has been troublesome for us this year.

Comment by wbb 11.15.13 @ 9:42 am

Upittbaseball, relax, it’s okay to actually look like you enjoy Pitt football every once in awhile… Geez 😉

Comment by Pitt2Cali 11.15.13 @ 9:48 am

No ACC coverage here on the ECoast. Watching on espn 3 also.

Comment by Dan 72 11.15.13 @ 10:19 am

@AJMAYO, you are correct sir. HCPC doesn’t need to relax fellas, he wasn’t uptight about it at all, he was chuckling and enjoying the moment.

In print, it looks that way, he enjoyed every minute of it!!

Comment by Dan 11.15.13 @ 10:38 am

Upitt

You just don’t get it. And who cares about beating Notre Dame anyway?

Comment by PittofDreams 11.15.13 @ 10:56 am

Syracuse is 5 and 4.

Wonder if they can add another to the win column tomorrow?

Comment by PittofDreams 11.15.13 @ 10:59 am

I would be happy to see him dance a lot. I assume he doesn’t get that carried away after losing.

Comment by spiritofsection22 11.15.13 @ 10:59 am

Picking up on Reed’s comments about Conner…

Conner had that “light bulb moment” against the Irish.

Knows now just how effective he can be by getting lower than the guy trying to tackle him.

Comment by PittofDreams 11.15.13 @ 11:22 am

Game will not be shown in my area either. You can order the game for $20 on espn gameplan if you want to watch.

Comment by Coach Ditka 11.15.13 @ 11:32 am

@Coach Ditka

That appears to be my option since ESPN3 does not seem to be available to me since I watch TV through DirecTV. And, all of the ACC channels are showing VA Tech or NC State. $20+ is not a big deal, but it is a ripoff.

So, I guess that the chances of the dancing vid being shown on the Heinz Field big screen are slim. Too bad. Would really light up the students and other Pitt fans. Could only help the team.

@ wbb, I share your trepidations as well. We will know after the first few possessions whether we are in a heap of trouble or not against North Carolina. They are a much, much better football team than their record implies.

Please, please, please, show me that Pitt can bring it on full throttle two weeks in a row, resulting in another win. IMO, it would do much towards creating a paradigm shift in the sterotypic “the same old Pitt” attitudes that have been entrenched around here for way too long. (Sorry to admit it, but I just don’t “believe” just yet that we’re seeing the New Pitt Panthers yet).

Prove to me that I’m wrong, please show me the errors of my ways, I want to beleive, I do.

Hail to Pitt, make me a believer tomorrow!

BTW, Pitt2Cali, very funny!

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.15.13 @ 12:42 pm

we won in large part on Saturday due to the 4th quarter generosity of the ND QB. We are not above accepting such charity two weeks in a row.

Comment by wbb 11.15.13 @ 12:50 pm

I would think that HCPC comments about the locker room tape have more to do with making sure the players know that it is not OK to take and distribute locker room video without permission. This time it was funny, the next time it might not be so funny.

Comment by HbgFrank 11.15.13 @ 12:50 pm

well, for all us Clevelanders who must watch the game on computer, there’s always this:

No. 9 John Carroll at No. 1 Mount Union

Records: Both teams 9-0, 8-0 OAC.

Kickoff: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Radio: WRMU FM/91.1; WDPN AM/1310.

Outlook: JCU seeks its first outright OAC title since 1989 and first unbeaten season since 1963 (7-0). Mount Union has won 24 straight overall and 82 consecutive regular-season games since 2005. Mount Union leads the series 26-2-2 and has never lost at home to JCU. Mount Union junior QB Kevin Burke leads NCAA Division III in quarterback efficiency (196.5) and has 34 combined TDs passing and rushing. The recent emergence of speedy freshman tailback Bradley Mitchell gives the Purple Raiders more balance. Mount Union is ranked second in Division III in scoring offense, total offense and total defense. John Carroll leads the nation in scoring defense (33 points) and total defense (191 yards per game). No team has scored more than nine points against JCU. Blue Streaks QB Mark Myers has completed 68 percent of his passes for 2,581 yards and 25 TDs, and 12 of those touchdown strikes have gone to stellar wideout Aramis Greenwood. JCU kicker Kresimir Ivkovic has made 15 of 19 field goals this season, the Blue Streaks’ special teams have blocked six punts.

John Carroll going for an unbeaten season.

Isn’t Mark Meyers, John Carroll’s QB ?

Comment by EMel 11.15.13 @ 1:14 pm

Pretty nice get for Coach Chryst and the Panthers.

Chris James, RB out of Illinois. Chose the Panthers over Wisconsin and Michigan State (to name a few).

I had read that the dancing locker room video was taken by a recruit on his phone. Special teams better be on their game tomorrow. H2P!

Comment by Panther Fan inHoopieland 11.15.13 @ 1:26 pm

Found this about our ex-QB from last week’s game.

“After misfiring on a few passes early, Myers was virtually flawless the rest of the afternoon. He completed 31 of 42 passes for 387 yards and three touchdowns. ”

And to think we had Tiny the Magnificent.

By the way, did you notice that in addition to Mich St, Wisconsin and Tennessee … Pitt beat out Ariz State for James

Comment by wbb 11.15.13 @ 1:35 pm

Great we landed James, he had lots of legit FBS offers.

Maybe he liked PC’s funky chicken dance. 🙂

Comment by EMel 11.15.13 @ 1:37 pm

5’9″..212 lbs…..kids built like a bull.

Comment by EMel 11.15.13 @ 1:39 pm

OK, educate everyone. Now with verbals from Chris James and Quadree Ollison, at what point do we tell Shai McKenzie that he waited too long and pull his offer? Too soon because kids can change their minds?

H2P Stick it to the Tarheels

Comment by pmdH2P 11.15.13 @ 1:47 pm

Good question. I for one think you can never have enough RB’s. McKenzie with his injury would be more than likely redshirted next year anyway.

Plus as we’ve seen over the years, sometimes these kids come in and are recruited for one position and end up at another position.

And yes it’s too soon on the mind change as well.

Comment by EMel 11.15.13 @ 1:55 pm

I say after every TD we put the PC dance up on the scoreboard, and have the cheerleaders mimic it. Or better yet, replace the hackneyed Sweet Caroline bit at the 3rd/4th Quarter changeover we stole from the Red Sox and get the whole stadium up doin’ the funky Chryst-in!?

Comment by Matt N. 11.15.13 @ 2:57 pm

Chryst is pretty loose and likes to joke around with the players during camp practices. It is fun to watch and those that can do so see a different side of him. The kids give it back to him also.

However, during scrimmages he’s all business like we see on gameday.

Paul Chryst is just one of those people who really don’t care what the media or fans think of him. For him the sole reason he is at PITT is to be a good HC for the players and his staff, everything else is just fluff.

He isn’t a stick in the mud really, but unlike others (especially his predecessor) he won’t talk just to talk and especially won’t talk about himself.
