Yahoo approached Chas about writing a column for their Battle Loyale series and he graciously allowed me the opportunity to bash Virginia Tech for somehow losing to us four times in a row. Here’s the link. It’d be great if people would tweet it, share it on facebook, etc. because it’s a great promo for the site to bring in new visitors. It’s a pretty cool moment for me to see my name on Yahoo’s website as a writer. Hopefully I don’t piss too many VT fans off with the column. I certainly was a lot more critical than the VT writer’s column where he spoke about dining halls.
“do you have signs on the edge of campus letting people know to run if they hear banjos?”
It’s a Deliverance reference, which is probably a bit too crude and also probably a cultural reference many will miss.
“A Hokie is pretty much gibberish some guy named O.M. Stull came up with in his imagination in the 19th century. He was paid $5 for his efforts. Ask for your money back. ”
I also read theirs…L-ame.
CLASSIC
Justin i like the fact that you stayed somewhat humble while still talking some good smack.
Very nice slam overall.
The reason they call it Hokie Stone is that they do not want to be confused with Limestone College in Gaffney, SC.
Like VT, Limestone College has a quarry on campus. Unlike VT, Limestone College has three National Championships (Lacrosse-D2). At the time they won their first (sometime in the early 2000’s), they had the smallest enrollment(<500) of any NCAA school at any level to ever win a national championship in any sport.
BTW, I live in Blacksburg,SC
Problem is however, that now somebody else has to back up your smack talk by actually “walking the walk”, specifically our Pitt Panthers. From a strategic standpoint I’m more of a Teddy Roosevelt kind of diplomat, “speak softly and carry a big stick”. I would hate to have VT’s players, pregame, to catch wind of this article and then be able to utilize it as inspiration to kick our a$$es. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll trash talk with the best of them, but I usually reserve the occasion for when I have some of my own skin in the game, either actually competing myself, serious money on the line, or both. I much prefer “gloating” after the victory is in the bag, rather than front loading the situation with trash talk that sometimes can come back to haunt you.
I just hope that the Panthers can back up your article Justin, because if we can’t, then all of a sudden your creative editorial talents won’t seem nearly as witty come Sunday morning.
Not criticism, just my POV.
Very cutting piece compared to the VT guy’s mentioning of our 9 National Championships, that was very nice of him. Also glad he liked our best college building in America and maybe the World.
And I believe experiencing all that Pittsburgh offers would far outweigh better dining halls and what Blacksburg doesn’t. (I guess the hunting of little deers and floppy eared wrabbits might better down there)
Elmer Fudd day is everyday in Blacksburg I’m sure !
Having lived in VA for many years after my time at Pitt I know the state is full of limestone called sub gray wacky. In the end I suppose that wacky daffy duck lost out to the hokie turkey.
Nicely done Justin!
Justin you are 1-0 vs. the writer from Hokie land!
