Recapping the New Mexico Win

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 7:43 pm

Through two games, Pitt is -6 on turnover margin. Yet, it is fair to say that turnovers have been irrelevant to the 1-1 record. Oh, sure if Pitt hadn’t turned the ball over against FSU, it may not have been a blowout. But, no one can fairly (or without engaging in massive speculative fantasy) claim that Pitt might have won the game. With New Mexico, the only difference less turnovers would have meant would be a bigger blowout.

They do matter, though. This team is simply not good enough to consistently give away possessions (without getting nearly the same number of turnovers from the opponent) at the rate they have in the first two games. Except for Old Dominion, every game the rest of the way is a toss-up. Some may slightly favor Pitt. Some may slightly favor the opponent. That has to be cleaned up.

Onto the game.

This one was over by the end of the first quarter, but it remained entertaining.

The main attractions were the freshmen. Headlined by Tyler Boyd.

Pitt receivers coach Bobby Engram was trying to explain the phenomenon that is Tyler Alexander Boyd when his young son Trey bounded into the room.

Engram turned to his son and said, “Hey, who made the biggest play out there?”

“Tyler,” Trey said. “He made the best play.”

Engram responded with the question of the hour after Boyd’s coming-out party as Pitt’s latest offensive star: “Which one?”

Indeed, there were three superb choices on a day in which Boyd accounted for 195 all-purpose yards and two spectacular touchdowns in Pitt’s 49-27 romp over New Mexico.

The first occurred on Pitt’s fifth snap. New Mexico cornerback Cranston Jones practically had crawled inside the back of Boyd’s jersey, but that didn’t stop the man whose Twitter handle is “Alexander The Great” from hauling in a 51-yard bomb from quarterback Tom Savage.

The second happened quickly — real quickly — late in the first quarter when true freshman Boyd took a handoff on a jet sweep and took off like an F-15. He finished his 33-yard TD sprint with a Reggie Bush-style dive from the 5.

The third evoked the great Larry Fitzgerald. Pitt was down to its final play of the first half when Savage tossed a 34-yard jump ball to the back of the end zone. Boyd reached for the heavens and somehow came down with the ball and a foot in-bounds.

Everyone knew the raw talent and potential. I remain completely amazed at his pass-catching. He was much more of a running back in high school — simply to ensure that he had the ball as frequently as possible. I really thought that he would look rawer. Still learning the nuances of catching the ball. Instead, he looks as if he has been a WR his entire life.

Then there was James Conner, the freshman running back who is making me look silly for thinking the Pitt coaches were making a mistake in training camp by moving him from defensive end to running back. He was not quite a beast, but he was powerful. 119 yards, 2 TDs (and 1 fumble) on just 12 carries. And if that wasn’t enough, a backstory.

Conner led all rushers with 119 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries only nine days after Alyssa O’Neill, a close friend from Erie McDowell, died Sept. 4 of an epileptic seizure.

“I give it my all every game,” Conner said, “but getting in the end zone made it special, I’ll say that.”

Conner said he spoke to O’Neill the day of the Florida State game (Sept. 2), his first as a collegian.

“She told me, ‘Congratulations, good game, I want to come out and visit you.’ That was the last time (we spoke). Two days after that she died. She was almost like a sister to me.”

The really sucky aftermath of the fake girlfriend saga of Manti Te’o is that I had to pause at the story for a minute. But, yeah, it happened.

Then there were the rest of the freshmen.

Then, on the last play of the half, Boyd leaped for the ball, then kept his feet inside the back line of the end zone for 34-yard score and a 35-6 lead.

“I’ve learned to not be surprised by Tyler,” Chryst said. “The thing that is exciting is he can be better.”

The game belonged to the freshmen — five of them, actually — with Conner and Boyd joined by tight end Scott Orndoff (a 4-yard touchdown reception), kicker Chris Blewitt (seven extra points) and safety Terrish Webb (a fumble recovery that was New Mexico’s only turnover).

One of the more absurd tweets I saw after the FSU game, was one that said Pitt played all those freshman as Chryst’s plan to impress all the recruits at the game. Guess he’s still trying to impress recruits as Dorian Johnson saw action. Shakir Soto continues to do nicely when playing at DE for spells and Tyrique Jarrett gets time at DT.

The defense set the tone in the game. Especially in the first quarter when Pitt committed two turnovers. Aaron Donald took advantage of the poor kid who had to play center in place of the injured Dillon Farrell. Wreaking havoc in the New Mexico backfield. And the pressure stayed on the Lobos up front until midway into the 3d quarter when the starters got a group break to give the second team work.

The linebackers were better in this game. Aided in no small part by the return to starter status by Todd Thomas.

The senior played nearly every defensive down and tied for the team lead in tackles with 10, including two for loss.

“It felt real good,” Thomas said after the game. “I’m happy coach Chryst and the team gave me the opportunity to come back. I love this team with everything that I have and I really enjoy playing for this team.”

Beaver Falls’ Thomas also made a big play to thwart New Mexico’s momentum early in the fourth quarter. Pitt led 42-20 but the Lobos were threatening to pull within two scores and faked a punt from near midfield. Thomas broke through the line and sniffed out the fake, blowing up the play and essentially sealing the win for Pitt.

Minor correction. Thomas is a redshirt junior. He has one more season of eligibility.

Thomas, who abruptly left the team after the first practice of August training camp, returned a week later but lost his starting job and played sparingly in the Panthers’ opening game loss to Florida State. He had been splitting reps with redshirt freshman Bam Bradley at weakside linebacker during the week, and began running with the first unit on Thursday.

But Thomas’s return to the team wasn’t as smooth as his play against the Lobos. A day after leaving the team, Thomas asked Chryst if he could come back. Chryst told him it would be up to his teammates.

“I talked to the seniors and they said that they wanted me back, but I had to change a little bit,” Thomas said. “I had to change how I carried myself, I had to stay humble and change for the team. I’m happy about that.”

Now that he’s back in the line-up and contributing to the team, Thomas says he is more at ease.

“I’m calm. I’m relaxed,” he said with a smile. “I’m not hyper any more.”

New Mexico may not feel the same way.

“We really couldn’t stop them … could not stop them,” Davie said. “Just big backs, big wide receivers, big quarterback, big offensive line.”

The Lobos, meanwhile, hurt their own cause by failing to fully cash in on three first-half turnovers and a 74-yard Carlos Wiggins kickoff return.

“I think we came out a little timid, to be quite honest,” said senior safety Dante Caro, who intercepted a Tom Savage pass on the game’s first play from scrimmage and later recovered a muffed Pittsburgh punt. “They came out and made plays, and we really weren’t ready. They caught us off guard a little bit.”

So at this point we still don’t know about this team beyond the fact that Pitt isn’t a top-10 team or a bottom-10 team. Hard to believe that a trip to Durham, North Carolina to play Duke will actually start telling us something about this team. But that’s where things stand. “In a world where Duke is not barrel bottom scraper of ACC football…”

true the duke game will tell us a lot duke is better
then they used to be they are very much like us not
at the top of the Acc but not at the bottom.
after that game we will know more abought are D.

IF we win that game we will win 6 or 7 games this year. if we lose we will be 5 and 7 or worse.

Nicely done Chas.

First road game, sounds like the crowd shouldn’t be too intimidating, unlike the Cameron Crazies.

This game should have improved confidence. Hopefully it pays dividends next week. How big and good is the Duke defensive line?

Comment by gc 09.15.13 @ 8:11 pm

If we lose to Duke, we are a basketball school for sure. We should win going away.

Comment by TX Panther 09.15.13 @ 8:18 pm

Tyler Boyd. Haven’t seen this much excitement in a man-child since Larry Fitzgerald. The kids is a man among boys as was Fitz. Difference is that he is 18 and Fitz played one extra year of Prep Ball.

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 09.15.13 @ 8:19 pm

Attendance for Duke/GT was 21,000. Should be less for us. Hope our fans in NC show up and make some noise. Shouldn’t be hard to get a ticket.

Comment by gc 09.15.13 @ 8:22 pm

Wait till Boyd puts on some man muscles like Larry.

Comment by gc 09.15.13 @ 8:23 pm

Will never forget going to Duke in 76 and watching Dorsett run wild in a rout of Duke. Then on to the “castles” which pass as frat houses.
The parties (and women) were beyond description and we could not have been treated better while on campus. Looking back on it, it was one of the best Pitt road trips I have taken over the years.

If you haven’t been to Duke, you ought to go.

Comment by Dan 72 09.15.13 @ 8:49 pm

Boy is hindsight nice when it comes to all the idiots who said Chryst screwed up the Todd Thomas situation.

Comment by Justin 09.15.13 @ 8:55 pm

Had to laugh tonight during the end of the Tampa Bay NO Game (delayed by lighting for an hour)where Tampa’s defense deserved the win, the TV commentator was saying that Tampa’s Special teams were coached by Dave Wannstedt and he was sure that the upcoming FG from 32 yds would be no problem….of course the kicker pulled his kick left and NO pulled out a miraculous last minute win. Wanny just seems to have a jinx on him! or…he really cannot coach.

There are better looking women among the other ACC schools but I’ll take your word for the quality back then. This is what other schools in the conference describe things so don’t take my word. Visit their sites and blogs. There is a true hatred for Duke and NC. I guess if you like CMU girls then the Dookies are it. I’m a big fan of FSU…the quality that is. I hear NC State isn’t bad either. Best body and brains might be the TarHeels. I would think Pitt also has to rate highly. Now let’s win on the field and shake those Pom poms.

I was reading an article from the Albuquerque Newspaper.

That QB they played in the 2nd half, Cole Gautsche (sp) was really their starting QB before he got hurt in the opener. He runs their option a lot better than the QB(Mitchum) who played in the 1rst half, as was evident when he got into the game. They ended up outscoring Pitt 21-14 in the 2nd half. And as well all know from 2011, in a triple option, the QB is the key to making it go.

@ gc

According to Stubhub, only a little over 500 tickets remain for PITT/Duke. Maybe Dick Groat bought a boatload of tickets. Kind of ironic our first ACC road game is with Dick’s alma mater.

I’m thinking of going, is anyone else from the Charlotte area going ?

Comment by EMel 09.15.13 @ 9:02 pm

agree TX Panther

Duke’s cheerleaders are at the bottom or near bottom of the conference.

I’d say Miami & FSU are at the top. And GT, UNC, NCSU & UVA & Clemson are in the next grouping.

Of course this can vary from year to year, as one school might have an extraordinary crop !

Comment by EMel 09.15.13 @ 9:09 pm

Emel, how big is their stadium?

Comment by gc 09.15.13 @ 9:28 pm

Doesn’t their stadium have a track around it? Can’t be more than 40k even after remodeling and renovations. It’s Cincy light.

Comment by TX Panther 09.15.13 @ 9:33 pm

Looked it up 34,000 capacity. Wonder why they only got 21,000 for Georgia Tech? Maybe they want to welcome us to the ACC.

Comment by gc 09.15.13 @ 9:34 pm

I have been to games at Duke’s stadium before. I don’t know if it has changed but about five years ago it looked like a high school stadium, with the track around it and everything. They were playing Virginia Tech, and the vast majority of the people there were there to see the Hokies.

They had a very very nice campus though.

That New Mexico team was horrible. Not much you can take from the game except that Tyler Boyd is awesome.
No one has ever questioned Savage’s arm. It’s always been his decision making, which isn’t going to be tested in basically a glorified scrimmage. He had tons of time and receivers were wide open.
Justin, if Chryst doesn’t demote Thomas then Thomas probably starts in the FSU game, which was much needed. Also, Todd Thomas could have also decided never to not return. You don’t mess around with one of your best LBs. o

Comment by Wardapalooza 09.16.13 @ 12:03 am

Chas – Thomas was starting because Bradley hurt his shoulder Wednesday in practice.

“Thomas said he was told Thursday he was starting after redshirt freshman Bam Bradley injured his shoulder in practice.

link to triblive.com

I think it will be hard to keep Thomas off the field now that he’s played well in two games. It is nice to know Bradley is there also though.

Ward – IMO the whole situation, all the actions by Chryst and by Thomas, after Thomas’ initial poor decision to quit, were done properly. Chryst obviously does ‘mess with his best LB’ or best RB or anyone else who believes that they are above their teammates and the program. We have seen this with every dismissal Chryst has made so far.

Comment by Reed 09.16.13 @ 5:28 am

Reed,

I think Thomas would still have started. Among the three, he’s the only one that has ever played defense for Pitt against a triple option team. He just would have had the start over Anthony Gonzalez.

Comment by Chas 09.16.13 @ 6:25 am

Reed, Chas, Justin

What has been the defensive line rotation? I noticed a lot of new guys getting a shot Saturday but couldn’t

Comment by notrocketscience 09.16.13 @ 6:33 am

…keep up with what players were rotating.

Comment by notrocketscience 09.16.13 @ 6:35 am

Pitt a 4 pt favorite at Duke.

Comment by alcofan 09.16.13 @ 6:55 am

The PG said that Thomas had been splitting reps with Bradley last week, then when Bradley hurt his shoulder, Thomas was given the start.

Why would you ever take him off the field now? He has said his mea culpa and is the second or third best player on the D.

Would Bradley be better than Vinopal?

I noticed the D-line rotation as well, keeping players fresh and providing experience. Against FSU, you could tell the difference when Donald and Ezell were out, against NM, not so much. Although Donald is much more explosive, especially against lesser talent and size.

Emel, you need to represent the Blather at Duke, a little body paint so we can see you on TV. Or with two women, like the most interesting man in the world.

Comment by gc 09.16.13 @ 7:03 am

Make that three young women. The third is not in the picture.

Comment by TX Panther 09.16.13 @ 7:15 am

rocketscience:

Donald and Ezell are playing heavily at DT in the first half. They got a break in the 2nd half. The line we saw a lot in the 2nd half was Soto, Render, Jarrett, and Price. Devin Cook and LaQuentin Smith saw some PT as well.

I believe neither Donald nor Ezell were on the field for New Mexico’s touchdown drives. That’s a “good” sign in that it wasn’t the starters who gave up the drives.

Comment by Justin 09.16.13 @ 8:21 am

First road game of the season. Lots of freshman. Seniors and Juniors are going to have to step up.

Duke is beatable. They are 2-1. They beat 1-AA team and squeaked by Memphis. Memphis is not good. They lost to Middle Tennessee State last week. If we bring our A game we should win handily. If we bring our B game it will be close. If we bring our C game it’s going to be a frustrating afternoon.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 09.16.13 @ 9:11 am

Emel, “Extraordinary crop”, You sound like a sexist pig. Funniest thing I read in a week. It’s good to know someone is keeping an eye on the conference talents at all levels. Thanks for keeping us well informed. Do you provide national rankings?
