Hello, again. Family was in town for the last week, so I couldn’t get to the site for writing.
First off, a big thanks to Justin for going to practice last week, and heading back out this week. That was some excellent stuff. More than during the season, it’s the camps and spring practices where it sucks to be 150+ miles from Pittsburgh when you write about Pitt. Still waiting for them to add childcare services at the South Side facility (or the kids get a little older).
Rather than jump back to the practice details from reports, I figured I’d post a little on some changes to the coaching duties that happened on this past Friday afternoon.
Former running backs coach Desmond Robinson is shifting to a new role as the team’s player personnel director. Offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph will take over as running backs coach, while retaining his previous role.
Rudolph, who had been coaching tight ends, will be replaced in that job by graduate assistant Mickey Turner.
Chryst said the move primarily was done to emphasize recruiting. Relief from active coaching duties will give Robinson more time to go on recruiting trips during the season.
I won’t deny being puzzled by this when it was announced. The first thing that jumped out at me was another graduate assistant doubling as a position coach. Hank Poteat is a GA and he is handling the cornerbacks. My initial impulse was that this was a kind of cheaping out by Pitt. Or that Coach Paul Chryst was arrogantly giving a short shrift to those positions.
Now that I’ve had a chance to step back, there are parts of this that makes sense. I still have questions and concerns, but I am not quite as annoyed as before.
First, I think it’s a mistake to assume that Poteat and Turner are coaching their positions without supervision. On the defensive side, DC Matt House also coaches the safeties. So it is reasonable to assume that House is providing more oversight to what Poteat is doing. The same can be said for the tight ends where the OC has just handed off the duties to Turner. Both GAs are almost certainly being watched and helped by their respective coordinators.
The second aspect is the number of paid assistant coaches/coordinators. Pitt still has the NCAA limit of nine. It doesn’t matter the team, they can only have up to nine fully paid assistants. It is just about how they are deployed.
Pitt:
Joe Rudolph — Asst. HC/OC/Running Backs
Matt House — DC/Safeties
Brooks Bollinger — Quarterbacks
Jim Hueber — Offensive Line
Bobby Engram — Wide Receivers
Inoke Breckterfield — Defensive Line
John Palermo — Defensive Ends/Linebackers
Chris Haering — Linebackers
Desmond Robinson — Player Personnel Director
Now, here’s Florida State:
Jeremy Pruitt – Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs
Rick Trickett – Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line
Tim Brewster – Recruiting Coordinator/Tight Ends
Lawrence Dawsey – Passing Game Coordinator/Wide Receivers
Jay Graham – Running Backs
Odell Haggins – Defensive Tackles
Charles Kelly – Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers
Randy Sanders – Quarterbacks
Sal Sunseri – Defensive Ends
If you notice, FSU does not have an offensive coordinator. Those duties are being handled by Head Coach Jimbo Fisher. But in the end it is the same number of assistants. FSU also has GAs but they are simply designated for offense or defense. Coach Chryst has specified that two of his GAs are working with a position. Which probably helps both GAs for their coaching resumes.
The real curiosity for Pitt, is obviously moving Desmond Robinson from a role of actively coaching and teaching to pure scouting and recruiting. While he is still a coach and allowed to go on the road to recruit (and presumably assist help with game planning), he is definitely moving to a support/administrative position in all but name.
The decision both confuses and makes sense. It is confusing in that one of the things that Coach Chryst has emphasized and is supposed to be a strength is “coaching the players up.” Developing the kids and simply having a very good teaching coaching staff. Eliminating a full-time coach, hurts that no matter how it is spread amongst the other coaches and having a GA focus exclusively on one position.
The logic inits favor, is obviously on the focus on finding the right players for what Chryst wants. Beyond identifying the intangible, “guys who want to be at Pitt” factor or the real hard workers. It is about finding players that will fit the style and approach. Finding the under-ranked players who are being missed and developing better relationships for recruiting.
And given how Chryst’s hands-off style of recruiting has caused plenty of consternation for fans, it may be a good thing to have a coach devoted to really building those relationships.
Now here’s the other thing that might be in play with this move. Please. Please, keep in mind that this is pure speculation on my part. I have no proof. I have nothing to go on other than trying to piece this together in my own head so that it makes sense. So I could easily be dead wrong. This could be about preparing Desmond Robinson to move to a more administrative position in a year or two. Specifically, assuming the role of Director of Football Relations and Program Enhancement being held by Bob Junko.
Junko is in his late 60s and it has not exactly been a secret that he has had major health issues over the last five years. Heck, part of why he moved from the coaching to administrative side of football were those health reasons. Yet, it could be argued that the last few years has seen him work harder than ever. The work he has done in the last few years with Chris LaSala amidst all the coaching chaos is why the level of players still at Pitt is not as bad as it could have been.
So, it makes some sense to take a Pitt guy on the coaching staff. Someone with lots of experience, and excels at player relations. To put Robinson in a position where he can take over a more administrative spot. Where he can expand and develop relations further in the community and the local coaches.
One elite eight showing that his coaching gave away.
I just hope that Chryst can reverse this result with some BCS games. So far I wonder (Schell, Todd)
His demotion together with Robinson’s promotion looks to be the tell of the reason for the shift in coaching responsibilities.
Post Gazette reports Pitt’s passing game “Making Strides with Savage at the Helm.”
Trib Review reports Pitt’s passing game “remans sporadic after 1st week of camp.”
Which one is closer to the truth?
In any organization it is important to identify a person real strength. This isnt always the strength that they believe that they possess. As they say “get the right people on the bus and put them in the right seats”. Perhaps Robinson is better fit for an admin role at Pitt.
More than most aspects of football, a team’s passing game is predicated on timing.
The line must execute their blocking assignments, the receivers have to run precise routes and the quarterback has to time his pass perfectly to hit the open man.
So a week into training camp, it’s easy to understand why Pitt is still working out the kinks in its aerial attack.
“It’s sporadic,” Panthers coach Paul Chryst said Tuesday.
“I think there’s times you go up and take a look and say, ‘Boys, we’re starting to understand the timing of it from a receiver’s perspective, quarterback.’ Then there’s times where obviously we need more work.”

Looks to have been a bad hire for the position.
Face it, this coach and staff are still a work-in-progress … my biggest fear though is that there is too much inbreeding
Obviously, there are reasons why Chapman is still technically a part of the team.
It’s asking a lot of Savage to expect him to jump right in and instantly be cured of his past foibles… namely interceptions and sacks.
Maybe Chryst can work miracles? He did last year with Tino.
As for Voytik, Reed has been specific in his critique of his tendency toward innacuracy.
I have been specific in Voytik’s tendency to throw ducks rather than darts.
When does Florida State come to town?
It is believed Peterson urged Dixon to bring back Slice for recruiting purposes.
I wonder if Peterson did the same with Chryst being upset with the player turnover (including some of Chryst recruits) and lackluster recruiting for the 2014 class.
The other issue, will it affect recruiting of RB’s, TE, CB? Rudolph has no experience with RB. What elite TE wants a GA as position coach. Albeit Poteat was a position coach as some tiny NAIA college prior to Pitt he does have NFL experience. Bringing Poteat in as a GA was a cheap hire.
I suspect there will be coaching changes as Robinson will relinquish his “coach” title to an administration role. I also hope for a coaching change up on the defensive side of the ball. Beckerfield or Haering need to go to make Poteat a fulltime coach.
It comes down to the person doing the teaching.
In any case… each of them, especially Poteat… would have a wealth of knowledge compared to anything held by 19 and 20 year olds.
Their success rides on their abililty to get and keep the attention and respect of the players and effecively communicate things that the kids can assimilate and put to action.
It’s not news that the college ranks is littered with coaches or aren’t worth a damn and wouldn’t have a job if it weren’t for their close ties to the head coaches who repeatedly hire them.
That leaves Porchia and Maclean along with Bradley and Grigsby as backups and fighting for the other OLB spot in ’15.
If that is the case, Chryst should have announced that last week.
Instead, he kept it all close to the vest and allowed the chatter on all the blogs, the FAN, and today’s article by Starkey in the Trib.
That is not good! smh.
These are not ringing endorsements.
Now if he does show in practice to be the best player at his position on the field, how soon does he move up?
PAUL H. CHRYST – HOW F*KIN HARD IS THAT TO COMPREHEND????????
TT probably realized that transferring and sitting out another year was not his best option. His best option is to SUCK IT UP, do it PC’s way, and play out the season.
If TT is as special a player as he appears to think he is, he’d be better off giving his all this year and if he stands out, he can enter the draft next year.
Pittofdreams made a good point about Dan Kabbala…
@chas, justin, Reed,
…can you guys provide any inside skinny on what is going on with him? Did he under perform? … any flame behind the smoke of the critique on recruiting organization, etc?
Thanks,
I doubt I could ever get an off the record quote about him. You will rarely hear about a coach or assitant doing a poor job unless they’re fired. If he’s still here, no one is going to talk because it’ll inevitably get back to them.
Your analysis might not sway those predisposed to the notion that HCPC is not up to the job, but I enjoyed reading it and thought you posed a plausible interpretation of the facts.
Glad that TT is back in camp and hope he has a great fall.
