Depth Chart

I wanted to throw a quick post together of what seems to be the depth chart at the moment. Obviously things are fluid and the coaches are claiming that there is no depth chart, but if the season started today, here’s how I think it would look. I’m going to underline freshmen (true and redshirt) and bold seniors so you have an idea as to what we added this year and what we’ll lose next year.

QB: Tom Savage, Chad Voytik

RB: Isaac Bennett, James Conner

FB: Mark Giubilato

WR: Devin Street, Tyler Boyd, Kevin Weatherspoon, Ed Tinker

TE: JP Holtz, Manasseh Garner, Scott Orndoff

LT: Adam Bisnowaty, Juantez Hollins

LG: Cory King, Ryan Schlieper

C: Gabe Roberts, Artie Rowell

RG: Matt Rotheram, Shane Johnson (Schlieper likely 1st OG off bench)

RT: TJ Clemmings, Dorian Johnson

DE: Bryan Murphy, Ejuan Price

DT: Aaron Donald, Darryl Render

NT: Tyrone Ezell, Tyrique Jarrett

DE: David Durham, Jack Lippert

OLB (strong side): Mike Caprara, Bam Bradley

MLB: Shane Gordon, Devon Porchia

OLB (weak side): Anthony Gonzalez, Nicholas Grigsby

FS: Jason Hendricks, Ryan Lewis

SS: Ray Vinopal, Cullen Christian

CB: K’Waun Williams, Lafayette Pitts, Brandon Felder, Trenton Coles

A few notes on this depth chart.

1) I did not include Todd Thomas since the basis of the depth chart is “if the season started today.” If it started today, Todd Thomas would not be on the 2 deep. Grigsby and Bradley are there because they’re only out due to a family funeral. In an ideal world, Thomas is at OLB and Caprara is the primary backup to OLB and MLB.

2) If there’s any part of the team I’m concerned about in 2013, it’s LB. Without Thomas, we have 2 new starters and an injury prone MLB. If there’s any part of the team I’m concerned about in 2014, it’s DT. We lose 2 very productive seniors. There are only 2 non-freshmen at DT other than Ezell and Donald…and one is suspended for the season (Mosley-Smith). Yikes.

3) Tyler Boyd is listed at WR opposite of Street. He’s the most impressive WR we have physically and he looks like he belongs out there. He isn’t over his head.

4) Total # of seniors on the 2 deep: 12. Total # of freshmen: 13. That means there are only 19 sophomores and juniors. We are going to be watching a very young team in 2014 because most holes will be filled by freshmen and sophomores next year. As of right now, there are only 8 sophomores on scholarship.

I’ll be attending the scrimmage on Friday. I’m quite excited. I’ll post a column that afternoon hopefully assuming my puppy Willie cooperates. This will probably be the only other practice I’ll be able to attend since I’m out of town the next 2 weekends for family reunions and I need to save my vacation days.

Emel:
Excellent points. The constant variables in all the mess are Pederson (and as he is a reflection of a chancellor without whom he wouldn’t be here)and Nordenberg. And let’s for those readers who are complaining about the hand-wringing and looking back. I fear as this season unfolds there will be a lot more of that by a lot more fans.

When do you remember this many negatives and bad press before the season even begins? 1968? 1969? Or any of Majors II years?

Even when Wannstedt stunk in the first game of 2008 (Bowling Green) and the last (Oregon State), there was real optimism going into 2009. Not so much in 2013.

Wannstedt could evaluate player talent. Chryst can’t even keep his best players on the team.

Comment by TonyinHouston 08.13.13 @ 9:22 pm

Its a testament of the mediocrity that has become Pitt football that people would actually think that because Dave Wannstedt won a bunch of games against mediocre Big Least competition and then proceeded to fall flat on his face in every meaningful game (save one; thank you Pat Bostick), he was a good coach. News flash, he stunk. A great Pitt man, but one hell of a lousy coach.

Comment by PittStadiumShuffle 08.13.13 @ 9:24 pm

AD’s do not tear down stadium’s [he has a boss] and I doubt that he even suggested it. Tom Ridge was the governor at that time and he built stadiums from Erie, Pittsburgh [2], Altoona, State College, Williamsport, and Philadelphia [2]. These are the ones I remember. Ridge, the Rooney’s, and Pittsburgh City and County Government’s wanted Pitt in the ketchup factory. You sheep actually believe the AD ordered the tearing down of that stadium. I would not even rate that a joke.

Comment by joel 08.13.13 @ 10:21 pm

At the time, I didn’t have a problem with the decision to dismiss/fire/whatever Wannstedt. I still don’t, to be honest.

Maybe the UConn and WVU losses and the way they both happened left too much of a bad taste in my mouth. At that point, I had seen enough of the same failures to recognize when stakes were raised and to seize on those moments. Kicking to Gilyard in 2009 right before the half and right after going up 21 points. Opening conference play with a convincing 3-0 record in 2010 and blowing a chance to grab the inside track on the conference lead by losing at UConn to a team that had no business staying with them. Then with a chance to still salvage a respectable bowl game and against WVU at home, coming out flat and unprepared and ultimately getting jeered out of their own stadium.

I was a huge fan of Wannstedt, but after that WVU game, all I could hear were the voices of the Wannstedt critics who I’d had to listen to from the time Pitt hired him. Three common criticisms I always heard from them – he could never develop quarterbacks, his teams faded late in the season, and he always managed to come up small in big moments. After that WVU game, it seemed to all be coming to fruition.

The off-field stuff has been mentioned. Sheard. Knox. Jason Douglas. Keith Coleman. I don’t know of any program that will ever completely eradicate off-field discipline issues, and maybe the fact that some of these incidents happened within a relatively condensed amount of time didn’t help. But it had to be a factor. I can recall the comments made by national outlets (let alone Pitt fans) when Penn State had their rash of player arrests some years back for fights and alcohol/drug-related incidents. You don’t want your program carrying that kind of reputation.

Maybe it would’ve gotten better on the field under Wanny. Maybe the yearly soul-crushing “game we never should’ve lost” would’ve stopped happening and they would’ve won a conference title. Who knows? He did have a decent recruiting class coming in for 2010, but let’s not forget that we may be hitching our QB wagon to the likes of Gary Nova right now, rather than Tom Savage or ultimately Chad Voytik.

Comment by Stoosh 08.13.13 @ 10:22 pm

Just for fun and because I’m bored and somewhat overtired, I checked on the progress of some of the 2010 de-commits that I could remember. Kind of interesting:

DT Marquise Wright – at Rutgers, transitioned to offensive line. Not sure how he’s done during camp, but was listed as a backup offensive tackle.

DB Kyshoen Jarret – at VT. Listed by a few preseason mags as their starter at “ROV”.

WR Bill Belton – at PSU. Currently a backup RB.

LB Ben Kline – at PSU. Backup LB.

RB Jameel Poteat – transferred out of Cincy to Stony Brook.

DB Terrell Chestnut – defensive back at WVU. Saw some limited action at corner last year, but doesn’t appear to be on their current 2-deep.

Desimon Green – originally went to Texas Tech. Currently at California (Pa) working at TE.

Interestingly, one of Wanny’s other de-commits who did end up sticking around was Lafayette Pitts.

Comment by Stoosh 08.13.13 @ 10:36 pm

Let me get this straight, the Rooneys and Ridge told PITT and UPMC to tear down PItt Stadium.

I don’t know who you are joel, but that made my night !!!

lmao

Well if Pitt listened to the Rooney’s, Ridge (Mr. Duct tape and plastic man) the idiotic Pgh. city govt. and the cronies that run the Allegheny County Govt.

WE DESERVE EVERYTHING WE GET & THEN SOME !

Me Buccos gave away another game tonite. Oy Vey !

Comment by EMel 08.14.13 @ 12:46 am

Wbb – I have never once had a conversation with Steve Pederson.

What I was told about that 2010 season came from someone outside of the football program but firmly inside the university itself and someone whom I have known for a very long time and trust explicitly. Regardless, people will believe what they want to believe and that is what makes conversation go – not every one should have the same ideas. Wannstedt is long gone and I’m truly more concerned about 2013 than I am about 2010.

Pghfred: Regarding Pat Bostick – your thought that he never gave 100% to the team and PITT is just plain wrong. There wasn’t a more dedicated player to the team and his teammates, the university and the game itself. The two points mentioned above are the story of Bostick’s time at PITT. 1) DW was always going to play Tino Sunseri as the starter after Stull graduated. He publicly said as much two months before spring practice in 2010 when he said this on Feb 26th 2010:

“He’s (Sunseri) ready to play now,” Wannstedt said. “It’s his time. He understands the offense, and we’ve got a good feel for his abilities and what he can do.”

This spring, Wannstedt said, Bostick and Sunseri will split the reps evenly early on in practice, with Andrew Janocko serving as the third-stringer. But unlike last year, Wannstedt doesn’t expect the competition to linger into fall camp.

“I think it will be cleared up pretty good this spring,” he said. “You never know, but I’m anticipating that it will.” Clearly the fix was in no matter what Bostick did out on the practice field.

And …2) Bostick was overrated as a HS QB and his overall skills didn’t measure up to BCS football. That is way more accurate than your stating that “Bostic had all the physical skills”.

I’m not saying Bostick was a better QB than Sunseri back in 2010, although I think he might have been at least a cerebral way – I’m saying it was blatantly obvious that no matter what Bostick did there was never a fair competition for him to win that starting spot.

According to article in this mornings Post-Gazette, Chryst commented that Thomas won’t return until something changes. But Chryst did not mention what the something was. Hmm.

Justin – I’m going to try to shift my schedule around to make it up to the scrimmage on Friday also. I’ll also drive up for the last practice and then stay over for the Kick Off luncheon.

I’ll be the tall guy with long brown hair and a DW mustache… you can take me to lunch and beers afterward so we can talk about the other commenters behind their backs.

Comment by Reed 08.14.13 @ 5:28 am

Wow, we are really back to beating a dead horse again. Hind sight truly is 20/20.

I’m with Stoosh regarding Wanny. It is easy to reminisce about the good times after all the crap since he was dismissed. Face it, he was not a great coach, an excellant recruiter, although he came up short in QB’s, O-line, and linebackers.

He only had one major win, WVU, the fluke of the century. He lost games he should have won in a very mediocre conference. The SI issue was the last straw. By the way without the WVU win, he probably would have been fired that year.

Regarding the stadium, it was a business decision, pure and simple. They had drawn up plans to renovate Pitt Stadium, they were way too costly and didn’t solve all of the problems and we still would have needed a venue for our up and coming basketball program. Politically, there was a huge fight going on over PNC Park and Heinz Field. There is no way the state would have supported a third stadium. So we got a reasonable politically acceptable compromise and were lucky to get it.

Isn’t it time to move on, look forward etc?

Comment by gc 08.14.13 @ 6:30 am

Agree with whoever posted above that Vinopal will be the weak link in the secondary. He is just like Taglianetti. He can play and he is probably great against the run but he just does not have the speed. Someone needs to step up.

Justin
Do they interchange the safeties? Could we see Lewis take his spot?

Comment by notrocketscience 08.14.13 @ 6:33 am

I agree that Bostick should have been given a fair shot in 2010. I can remember being shocked of an interview Cignetti gave in late January on the old ESPN1250 channel to Stan and Guy, stating that Sunseri will be the starting QB … this was 2 months before spring practice.

I also agree the focus is on 2013, not 2010 … but as long as Stevie (and prospering)is here and the program is mediocre, it will be pretty hard to forget.

Comment by wbb 08.14.13 @ 6:35 am

I was also a big fan of Bostick and thought he was a winner, never given a real shot. He certainly has the brain as evidenced by his current job. Oh well again, ancient history, although not the last time we will relive it.

Just wait till Labor Day, let the hand wringing begin.

Comment by gc 08.14.13 @ 6:46 am

notrocketscience, since we are looking ahead, Vinopal may well not be a starter next year .. as Pitt will have 2 locals transferring back home who will be eligible next year. Dontez Ford from Syracuse and Reggie Mitchell from Wisconsin, both of whom saw playing time as freshmen

Comment by wbb 08.14.13 @ 6:53 am

wbb,
Ford never played at Syracuse his freshman year. He took a RS.
Chryst never offered Ford. Currently, he is a walkon meaning no scholarship. I highly doubt he will be on the 2deep next year.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 08.14.13 @ 7:00 am

doesn’t he have to be a walk-on or he would be ineligible due to the inner-conference transfer being 2 years?

Comment by wbb 08.14.13 @ 7:10 am

intra-conference

Comment by wbb 08.14.13 @ 7:11 am

whatever … seems like he would be a credit to PItt

Comment by wbb 08.14.13 @ 7:14 am

wbb, Don’t know because Big East rules versus now ACC rules.
Although he walkon in January, don’t know if Big East rules apply now that Pitt is in the ACC.
But, Ford is not that talented. Chryst never offered him when he was in HS.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 08.14.13 @ 7:22 am

reed – First, I always and still do like Bostick and never questioned his dedication to the team or Pitt. What I questioned was his dedication to make himself better. He had the size and talent, but seemed to never progress during his years at Pitt.

While it may be true, I find it hard to believe that DW or anyone would have just given the job to Tino because of his family legacy. Could it be the fact that Tino was just a better ‘practice’ player? I can’t see it because of being better in actual games since Bostick had better wins on his resume than Tino, while only starting a fraction of what Sunseri did.

Comment by pghFred 08.14.13 @ 8:30 am

Speaking of putting things to rest: Three different coaching staffs determined Tino to be the best of the bunch and named him as our starting QB. In fairness to Tino, he had to work with three different coaching staffs. I’m not sure any college QB would thrive under those circumstances.

Comment by HbgFrank 08.14.13 @ 11:31 am

HbgFrank, don’t even try, there is no such thing as fairness to Tino on this site

Comment by wbb 08.14.13 @ 12:30 pm

Tino was a tuff guy.

He knew how to take a lick.

He came off kinda cocky,

made him look like a prick.

His starting QB status looked easy nuff to rob,

but but none of the competition was able to fill the job.

Tino played for three full seasons,

which produced oh so many reasons,

to dispair over his game day antics,

since often his efforts seemed so frantic.

But after it was all said and done,

and it was determined what he had won,

his only really unforgivable sin,

was his inability to bring home the big win.

NEXT!

people made way too much of a fuss
of a QB who was thrown under a bus
by an egotist who in the end really ddin’t care
and left the program in so much despair
yet, people still needed someone to blame
tear down the kid, put him to shame
despite no blocking, rushers coming free
just another vicious hit on the poor QB
yet he picked himself up again and again
but the mob blindly still berated him
now they must find another one to shame
to justify to themselves, their claim to fame

Comment by wbb 08.14.13 @ 2:20 pm

After reading Reed’s quotes from 2010 from Cignetti 2 months BEFORE Spring Practice and then DW afterwards, it should be as clear as the nose on your face, that you know who was going to be the starter regardless. Bostic was just passed over like so many in crony capitalism by nepotism, favoritism, fraternalism, whatever you want to call it. The kid didn’t complain, not that the media ever asked him a single question, about how he felt (cough cough) being passed over.

A kid who led Pitt, when he was a true freshmen, to PITT’s biggest win since the 1981 Sugar Bowl.

I did watch the Spring Blue/Gold that year on the NFL Network and I was anticipating seeing a good QB from all the hype. What I saw shocked me, he stunk then and didn’t get much better. What they did was let him mostly only make throws he had a chance of completing. Mostly dinks & dunks and then YAC. And then once Baldwin was gone making his one handed, acrobatic catches, the chickens really came home to roost.

Baldwin got his reward for making Santino look good and Bostick got his reward for keeping silent and not complaining openly.

The corporate world and the sporting world act pretty much the same. Which is why the corporate world sponsors all the major sports. Nepotism, fraternalism & cronyism rule.
