Well, I’m sure the comments will be measured and calm in response to the news.
University of Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson has been signed to a new five-year contract that will keep him at Pitt through at least 2018, Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg has announced.
“With the University of Pittsburgh set to officially join the Atlantic Coast Conference on July 1, our athletic programs never have been better positioned for future success,” Nordenberg said. “That is a real tribute to the hard work and effective leadership provided by>Steve Pederson as Pitt’s athletic director.
“Just two years ago, during a period of significant conference instability, Steve was a driving force in helping us to find the best possible conference home. When we received an invitation to join the ACC, Pitt not only had the chance to move to an outstanding athletic conference but also became aligned with some of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions. The ACC is a perfect fit for the University of Pittsburgh, and our receipt of their invitation reflects well on both our overall institutional strength and on the tremendous progress made in Pitt athletics under Steve’s guidance.
“As we begin this exciting new era of ACC competition, we all have high aspirations for each of our programs. The creativity, strength and stability of Steve’s continued leadership will be an important asset as we pursue those lofty goals.”
In addition to the coming ACC money, the fundraising has been fine.
Pederson also has been instrumental in raising funds for the Panthers Club that subsidizes scholarships for student-athletes. The university reported a record total of $14 million in donations from 2010-2012.
Nordenberg likes Pederson. He has a good relationship with him. As long as Nordenberg remains the Chancellor — and there is little reason to think he is leaving anytime soon — Pederson’s job is safe.
Just leave the condescending attitude for somewhere or someone else.
The more posters the better, makes it much more fun, interesting and informative.
Post more often.
I suspect the volume of boo’s would drown out all other sound. Just this hater’s opinion of course.
1. Pederson is not responsible for matriculating Pitt to the ACC. Pitt was not the first, or second or third option for the ACC. The first to matriculate were Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College. Syracuse and Connecticut were next. BC and ND nixed UConn and Pitt had a home. The location provided an expanded footprint. The academics was a match. Athletic prowess was not a key consideration in the decision to invite Pitt to the ACC. If you believe that, you must also believe that the big10 went after Rutgers and Maryland for athletic improvement. NOT.
2. Some say Pitt baseball has improved. Their record has improved, but their strength of schedule was nearly the worst, 200 out of 228. That is a smokescreen, not success. Pitt FB finished 5th out of 7 teams, Womens BB + 0 conference wins. Where does Pitt rank in the Capital Cup? When Louisville outperforms Pitt in every revenue producing sport, you have a problem and it is your AD.
3. Pederson did not raise the money for the Peterson events center. He was in the right place when a very large donor wanted to do something special for his university.
4. I do have the luxury of working with and interacting with AD’s in a different conference and our guy does not enjoy a good, let alone a great reputation in their industry.
5. AD support to head coaches and their assistants is a key part of the success of a department and program. Pitt does not have that. As far as the ACC Commissioner’s statement, this is how it works in board rooms. Can you give us a quote about Steve Pederson’s contract extension? Commissioner makes up some bs to get his name in the news. Ask other AD’s and they couldn’t be happier for Pederson, because they want him to remain incompetent. It limits competition in their field and keeps a program down.A funny happening would be if Pitt attendance dropped to 1 fan a game and Steve Pederson still says, we are staying at Heinz!! His hair remains its color because it has been buried in sand for too long.
That said, I still think Paul Chryst is the right move if he gets another 4 years. He is establishing the framework, building the foundation. He will be successful. Srry for long post!
Stevie doesn’t want to bring back the Script……Bottom of the page. Free content.
While he has done some good things in his 2nd stint, the few negatives have been devastating and unforgiving …. unless you have a boss that likes you and really doesn’t care what most Pitt fans and lalumds do care about.
The reality is Pitt has defined mediocrity+, nothing more, with the exception of Dixon’s 2008-09 squad and a few of his early teams, and Wannstedt’s 2009 team which finished in the Top 15.
So congratulate Pitt’s AD for maintaining mediocrity in two sports and really not much more. Have to agree with the baseball comments. And, for that matter, our wrestling team is good but competes a level below Penn State. So maybe there’s a data cruncher out there who will add up the win/loss records of all sports under Pederson’s watch. I’m guessing we would be somewhere between 50 – 60% on the win side, maybe worse.
Nordenberg and the one trustee who was quoted (The General) love Pederson and love mediocrity. And during The General’s time on the Pitt hoops team, success was defined the same way as it is now. If you make the post-season, and there was no CBI then, you are golden.
My point really, was that out of 17 athletic teams, only one has been successful for awhile, hoops, and of late, baseball and wrestling had a good year.
3 out of 17, at best.
Baseball did have a good year didn’t they? I’m pretty sure you and upone kept us up to date. Almost made the tourney, right??
The baseball program in general, hell I don’t know. Was just talking about this past year.
I was digging for anything, pretty hard digging, and 3 out of 17 was what I came up with.
Agreed about ACC baseball. In the south, baseball is on a different level.
Also, in fairness, football has had some good times, games. We haven’t been 1-11 or 0-12. Lots of bad, and mostly mediocre.
LOL
Walt Harris was run out of town because of his personal actions and because of what his agent said about the PITT program. We then hired the Dave Wannstedt, solely on the strength of his being an alumni. He was a ‘hometown boy’ and people liked him and tended to overlook his poor decision making and level of success in his other jobs..
But Hey! Eric Gill didn’t miss a snap even though he had a DUI when he played for DW. With the Sheard incident DW was directed to take a formal disciplinary action with his player and didn’t do so, thus DW sealed his fate months before he was fired.
This also came on the heels of the SI article that dragged PITT’s name through the mud in a grand way. There was nothing positive happening between the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
The PITT administration wasn’t going to put up with it any longer, and they didn’t. I find it rather strange that some PITT fans hold onto the “Next Level” bullshit even though the PITT administration hasn’t exerted any energy or money to make that actually happen. Not after Harris and nor after Wannstedt.
Each time they have fired someone for cause they have hired a head coach that is mediocre at best. Wannstedt had a very average reputation in the NFL yet he was to be the “savior” for PITT. He got fired and the we went cheap again and ended up with Todd Graham.
Where exactly is the upgrade in that? PITT fans hold onto this idea that the PITT administration actually gets that involve in the won – loss record of the football team. I very much doubt that.
Let me state emphatically that no one has to post at all. I understand that there are people who just read and never post. No problem with that at all. Understood.
There are also people who post once in a blue moon, no problem with that at all, none at all, completely understand that.
What ticks me off, is someone who posts once in a blue moon, and the only thing they have to say is something derogatory or critical of other posters.
And they are certainly even able to do that also.
I, however, am also allowed to have an opinion, and for lack of a better term, I call it a cheapshot!.
