Locking Down 2016

Maverick Rowan will be a sophomore in high school. Yes, he really was named after the Tom Cruise character in Top Gun. I’m sure there are no shortage of quotes and bad jokes to use. Though, given the age in the readership we could probably slip some Rowan & Atkinson stuff in as well.

He is already considered a top prospect for the future. Oh, and last night he did this:

So, yeah. That’s something.

The earliest he gets to Pitt is 2015 — if he reclassifies. As it stands, he is in the class of 2016. As a 17-year old he is already 6-5, 175 pounds.

Rowan is a terrific outside shooter, making seven 3-pointers in one game this season and averaging three 3-pointers a game. He averaged 22.3 points during the regular season, third-best in the WPIAL, and was one of only 26 players in the country named to the MaxPreps.com freshmen All-American team. I’ve seen him play a few times over the past few years, both in high school and on the AAU circuit. His parents named him after the character in the 1980s movie “Top Gun.” It’s appropriate because this Maverick is a gunslinger with a deadly shot. He is tall and slender with long arms  and can really stroke the 3-pointer.

Now he needs more muscle and some improvement on the defensive end, but he still has three more years of high school left for that. But he can most certainly shoot. He has put a lot of workout time and effort into being a top player.

He is the son of a St. John’s player — Ron Rowan — who made it to the NBA and had a nice Euroleague career.

A brief note, he plays his AAU ball in Ohio with the Ohio Basketball Club. Worth noting because another Beaver County product — Sheldon Jeter — played his AAU ball with the King James Shooting Stars. Also Ohio based.

In addition to Pitt, other programs have been nosing about Rowan despite his classification. UNC, Kentucky and other top-name programs. So, given the time between now and the earliest signing period — November 2015 — this is far from over. Especially if he continues to develop as most think.

I have to admit, I have a hard time taking this verbal too seriously. I’m sure he means it right now. I think his family is probably happy and supportive of the choice. That said, there is a long time to go and he is still a kid in high school. A lot can — and probably will — change both in his life, his outlook and goals. It strikes me as unrealistic to believe this will be a static situation from here to signing day.

Even more cynically, I am struggling to remember the last time a kid committed this early and stuck with it. Along with becoming the impact player people thought at the time. I’m not even just thinking Pitt — Herb Pope, Terrelle Pryor. I’m thinking guys like Taylor King. Lots of things change in 2+ years.

on the football side – Kincaide also

If I were a betting man, I would say Rowan reclassifies to 2015 class.
Hard to get excited about this commit.
I’m more concerned about 3 open scholarships to fill for this year to be able to run a practice. Injuries do happen.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 06.03.13 @ 7:46 am

I understand the hestitation about a commitment this far away, but his dad knows how this all works. I highly doubt that he would be ok with Maverick commiting now and switching his commitment at a later time. His dad is very by the book.

Interesting story, Ron Rowan used to be the head coach at my high school when I was in 6-9th grade. In 9th grade, Maverick would come to open gyms with his Dad and play with us. He would do more than hold his own (as a 2nd grader).

Comment by srb 06.03.13 @ 7:56 am

Ron Rowan may be “by the book” as a coach.
But, Ron knows how to play the system.
Ron transferred himself some 30 years ago when there were very few transfers (ND to St.Johns).
Also, why do you think Mav “repeated” 8th grade and homeschool?

If I were to place odds today of Rowan attending Pitt, I would say it is very low.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 06.03.13 @ 8:17 am

Big deal! If he cannot play at all, he will be a Panther. If he is a star, he will be at Duke or somewhere else.

Comment by Kid Robbie 06.03.13 @ 8:23 am

It is hard to get excited about a 17 year old freshman. There must be more to that story. Would think he will need to go to a prep school to keep playing, I believe PIAA has some age limit.
Perhaps he could do GED and come in early?

Comment by Jimbo 06.03.13 @ 8:25 am

nice but to far away now if it were a player for this year or next i would be all ears

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 8:27 am

Jimbo, cant do ged. NCAA clearinghouse rules about number of courses and sat.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 06.03.13 @ 8:30 am

Big white guy with a nice shooting touch? Coach K will snare him sooner or later.

Comment by Jeff 06.03.13 @ 8:42 am

@@@@@@@@@

Seventeen year old freshman? Durand
Johnson can shoot 3’s better than any
of the guys who played before him
supposedly because he is weak defensively
Maverick needs at least 35 lbs of muscle
no matter how well he shoots 3’s.

Comment by JR 06.03.13 @ 8:57 am

Im going to go out on a limb here and take the good news for what it is….good news…
Welcome young man and pleae pay no attention to the host of former D1 stars and NBA alums who populate this board!
Pitt wants you. And Im darn glad you chose to join us now!

Comment by sfpitt 06.03.13 @ 9:23 am

for you who say dixon style of play does not
make a difference on a player comeing here or not.
read one of the reasons JJ left pitt .
i want to run i aam a running type of player rutgers
will play more my style .
i will still use the D that was taught here but i want to run and gun.
that is very close to what he said.

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 9:28 am

Agree sfpitt.

Great news!

Comment by notrocketscience 06.03.13 @ 9:31 am

Ho Hum, Terrel Pryor commited about the same age.

Comment by alcofan 06.03.13 @ 10:25 am

sfpitt, there isn’t one poster here (well maybe Upittbaseball) who wouldn’t be overjoyed if Rowan attends Pitt. It is just as Chas has indicated, that an early commitment has never come to fruition …. probably the same at most other places also … except maybe at Bama, Ohio St, Duke, etc where some kids may have had lifelong dreams playing for these schools.

Comment by wbb 06.03.13 @ 10:49 am

wbb, Cardiac Hill reported that Maverick dream school was UCLA.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 06.03.13 @ 10:56 am

Can someone help me with his age verse grade? Even being held back one year. How can you be a 17 year old high school freshman? I started college at 17.

Comment by Winedogs 06.03.13 @ 10:56 am

OK, Chas, you asked for it: Did his mother not like him?

Comment by steve1 06.03.13 @ 10:58 am

winedog, 17 is typical for someone entering senior year in high school. He turns 17 in July per white of PG.
In addition to repeating 8th grade, he either started school late or was held back in elementary school.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 06.03.13 @ 11:01 am

It looks like he did 8th grade twice per an earlier post. If he’s turning 17 in July that would be someone entering his junior year normally (as one of the oldest kids in his class). Most kids turn 17 sometime during junior year and 18 in their senior year.

Comment by FG 06.03.13 @ 11:44 am

This is from Joe D on the Panther Prey blog. While Joe D can often be very negative and abrasive, he does seem to be very much in-tune with sports in the Beaver Valley, and it certainly seems crazy enough to be plausible:

“Actually, there is more to the story than that.
Ron Rowan screwed up. While he was Hopewell coach, he has his son play on the 9th grade team when he was an 8th grader. So, Maverick’s eligility clock started.
Ron was fired from Hopewell so he was looking to have his son enroll at LP. Wpial was going to have a hearing as it was considered a “transfer” perse. Ron then found out about the eligibility clock.
Therefore, by repeating 8th grade and not playing for any HS team, Maverick’s eligibility clock restarted. That is why Rowan repeated 8th grade as homeschooling.”

Comment by wbb 06.03.13 @ 12:07 pm

Frank – I hear what you are saying, but I suspect JJ’s tune would be different if he were actually starting at Pitt. To be clear, the reason he isn’t starting is primarily because he is not better on the whole than the guys in front of him, regardless of style of play. He’s a role player that thinks he’s a star.

Comment by Pantherman13 06.03.13 @ 12:59 pm

The Rowan commitment may not pan out, but it is a good thing for Pitt. Rowan will almost certainly end up in prep school next year, and given the commitment Pitt will likely have some influence in where he chooses to go. Does that guarantee anything? No, but it could work in Pitt’s favor.

Also, if he reclassifies, he’ll be 19 as a freshman, which is basically only a year behind expected age.

Comment by Pantherman13 06.03.13 @ 1:06 pm

So you’re saying he’ll end up in Durham?

Comment by yup 06.03.13 @ 1:18 pm

pantherman13 yes you nailed it but it still shows what is in his head abought the style of play.
and if he is thinking it outhers are also.
my point was the ones that bitch of the system
pitt runs are more right then wrong if players are
thinking abought it also.
jj i want to run i am a running kind of player
that is the point.

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 1:18 pm

Chas, you left out Rowan and Martin. Now sock it to me!

Comment by Chuck Morris 06.03.13 @ 2:00 pm

Wbb, I said last night I was pumped abut us having a white kid who can hit 3’s. didn’t you read my posts.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.03.13 @ 2:21 pm

I was just having a little fun with you

Comment by wbb 06.03.13 @ 2:35 pm

Wbb – LOL… Go pens!

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.03.13 @ 3:19 pm

here is a sad thing and it could have been us
i am not pokeing fun it is a sad thing.
i keep up on the old big east now the AAC
and there only sure bowl tie in for 2014 is
the beef o brady bowl in st petersburgh
outher less then major bowls may come
as things shake out.
but as of now that is there only bowl so it
is there nummber 1 bowl that is sad for them
and it could have been us.

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 4:37 pm

I remember Ron Rowan, I think he played at Beaver Falls. I played against him several times and he was a very good player. Looks like Ron is doing what Sal did with you know who.

Who was like 20 when he was a freshman. lol

It would be real nice to get a player his size who can shoot and has some moxie.

Welcome to Pitt Maverick !

Comment by EMel 06.03.13 @ 5:04 pm

@FRankie,

Had the ACC taken Uconn instead of us, we would have ended up in the Big 12 like the Hoopies.

More than likely instead of the Hoopies, as the Big 12 approached Pitt before the ACC invite. Which was well before WVcc getting it’s invite.

Comment by EMel 06.03.13 @ 5:14 pm

EMel it is sad for the AAC is it not.

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 5:14 pm

One also has to wonder if the Big 12 had offered PITT, what the Big 10 would have done. Would the Big 10 have wanted Texas, Oklahoma, OKie State, etc. recruiting access to Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc.

Pitt maybe could have parlayed a Big 12 offer into a Big 10 invite. Who knows what the Big 10 would have done to keep Texas & Oklahoma OUT of PA & Ohio.

Comment by EMel 06.03.13 @ 5:19 pm

You mean the our favorite bowl game (The Compass Bowl) isn’t re-hitching back up with the AAC ?

Or is that bowl going defunk ?

Comment by EMel 06.03.13 @ 5:21 pm

Had we had a more adept AD…..oh well !

Comment by EMel 06.03.13 @ 5:23 pm

Hey Frankcan. Absolutely. I have no wit or sarcasm in my comments.

I feel bad for the kids, I don’t know, 8 to 16 or so, who are UCONN fans. Has a relative went there, played there or just like them, live and die with them.

I remember being young and hanging on to everything Pitt like it was life and death.

You know there are some sad kids, feeling like they aren’t part of the show.

Hopefully the hoops can continue, and maybe UCONN can get in the ACC or Big Ten down the road.

No joy in that situation.

Comment by Dan 06.03.13 @ 5:38 pm

Hell, I would have really been upset, as an adult if we weren’t in a main conference.

A lot of us would be. Hence all the talk we all had a couple years ago about trying to get in the ACC or Big Ten.

I can still remember, a few, and none by name, telling all of us, “quit with the sky is falling” talk about not getting in a top conference.

In the realm of Pitt athletics, it certainly was a “sky is falling” situation, and thank goodness we got an invite.

Comment by Dan 06.03.13 @ 5:42 pm

Dan bud how are you i just did some more diging
they might have the bbva compass bowl also
. DAN if it werent for boston it would be us insted
of u conn it freaks me out it could have been us
it is very sad.

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 5:45 pm

Dan, I was never worried about Pitt winding up in a major conference. We may not often land in the top 25 in football, but we always finish in the top 25 in TV markets!

Comment by HbgFrank 06.03.13 @ 5:51 pm

EMel and Dan it is the lack of respect
that would have killed me u conn and cinci will still get 5 million for the next 4 years wich is the same as they got in the big east.
but no good bowk games even if you are a good team no automatic in like the outher confereces .
the lack of respect for us if we were there it would have killed me

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 5:57 pm

@Frankie, of course, no matter what thing in life it is, if you’re not part of the party, it’s not as much fun.

Would we still play football, of course. No fun being non-relevant though.

We still have to win to be relevant certainly, but if you’re not in one of the Big 5, you pretty much have no chance.

Unless you pull a miracle Boise State or TCU which is a very rare thing to do, and extremely doubtful that we could ever do that.

Sure, it has to do with respect. Again, we still have to win, but you have to be in one of the Big 5 to even get the conversation started.

Comment by Dan 06.03.13 @ 6:22 pm

The big conferences are for the big conferences. It will be interesting to see if any non-big undefeated teams get voted to play in the new playoffs.

Decks stacked against smaller school conferences just like in old BCS.

Comment by Frank MD 06.03.13 @ 6:34 pm

Just read where the AAC is having a tough time locating a place to play their basketball tournament. So add that to their bowl tie-in woes.

Seems they don’t want to have it somewhere, where the host team, might not be in the conference the following season.

Apparently the XL Center in Hartford isn’t interested.

And things won’t get better as when L-Ville, Rutgers leave they will be replaced by East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa. Yikes !

Comment by EMel 06.03.13 @ 6:49 pm

The AAC is thinking of of mohegan sun casino in
connecticut for there BB play off.
can they do that would the NCAA let that happen
i mean a casino and all that goes with that is it legal .
has any one been there how many does it seat .

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.03.13 @ 8:16 pm

They need to find another high school freshman by the name of Goose.

Comment by Panther Pride 06.03.13 @ 9:28 pm

Pitt football Prospect Camp this weekend!!
Next weekend also.
If we don’t have at least 5 commits by mid-June then we are in trouble.
I don’t know how many players with offers are attending. Typically those without offers attend these camps.

Comment by Pitt.Dan83 06.04.13 @ 7:39 am

@wbb
I understand your point, but here is mine: Why not welcome the young man? let him know we are happy about his decision and use positive information?
If I had to bet, i’d say that a full 20% of the posts on Blather discuss how poor/late/mediocre/underserved/etc…in recruitng in one form or another.
Here, we get an early and stud committment and for Chryst’s sake (to mix metaphors) all we get is people getting their undies all tied up in a knot.
I understand that you can’t please all of the people all of the time, but the average Blather poster is never pleased.
I would hate to go thru life that way…it’s far too short to see the black lining all the time. Thta’s what Joe D is for isn’t it?

Comment by sfpitt 06.04.13 @ 9:25 am

@Emel, you threw me for a second. I thought, oh no, now the ACC is having bowl tie in problems.

Hell, I thought we had 9 or 10, grant of rights and were on our way.

The AAC, ah!!!! The former BE, ok, blood pressure back down.

Comment by Dan 06.04.13 @ 9:53 am

From the files of yesteryear…St John’s Ron Rowan hits the go-ahead basket in the Big East Tournament Finals as St John’s leads by one over Stracuse. Walter Berry comes out of nowhere to block an “uncontested” layup by Pearl Washington to clinch the deal.
