I’ll try to post over the weekend — here’s hoping that there won’t be any bad news necessitating it.
But heading into the weekend, let’s check in with West Virginia football scheduling plans.
The move to the Big 12 costs West Virginia its rivalry game with Pittsburgh, and the Mountaineers only have Maryland remaining as a natural non-league rival, and that could end when the Terrapins may the questionable move to the Big 10.
βI would love to get Pitt back on the schedule, I would love to get (Virginia) Tech back on the schedule, I would to get UVa back on the schedule, another school that we used to play a lot, and even Penn State,β [WVU AD Oliver] Luck said. βIs that possible? Well, it takes two to tango, but I think the good news is we will see some stronger non-conference schedules as we go forward.β
The wonderful thing about the article is how it is completely couched in trying to build a schedule for the future college football playoff. Getting the right strength of schedule and all that. Oliver Luck — and of course the writer of the piece — doesn’t even mention the travel costs for WVU as an issue. No not that. That isn’t at all the point.
I mean, I’m sure it was just a coincidence that all of the teams that Luck rattles off happen to be within a driving distance for the Hoopies. So, you know, travel costs for a home-and-home road game would be reasonable.
And good luck with that. Or as our VT counterparts at The Key Play noted.
It isn’t even malice that results in VT, Pitt and others having no interest in playing WVU. It’s that there is little to be gained. No help for recruiting. Fanbases seem at best lukewarm to the idea.
I’m not against playing the Hoopies. I think good hated rivals are part of what makes college sports special. But they are still a weak second in my hate list behind Penn State. And with the Nitters looking more and more like they want to resume the series full time, WVU will at best be the occasional nostalgia act.
We shouldn’t be playing community colleges with student/athletes? who have a 6th grade education.
L-ville is enough on that front !!
……with student?/athletes who have…
The kids went wild after the walk off shot to deep center. Good for them!
Likely a ticket to the College World Series.
I can’t tell you how much fun that was to watch.
And I hate baseball.
Hail to Pitt and have a great weekend!
I don’t care if I have to fly half way around the world, I will be at that game in 2016.
There is not a more ‘natural rival’, and for us to have the opportunity to play ours while more and more traditional rivalries are broken… we should consider ourselves lucky. It’s that type of game that makes college sports so entertaining.
Glad to hear about the baseball team though! hopefully my cable will be up by the time the College world series starts so I can watch them. (given that they are in it…)
The top 2 teams, Louisville and Seton Hall, are knocked out.
Go Pitt
WVU….. hahhahhhahha… hahahha…hahahahhaaaaa
hell no, no one should play them… nor will they play them. In this way they are locked up into the state of WVU with no recruiting outlets into the midatlantic… because good luck trying to convince top kids to come to WVU and do the ‘dust bowl’ tour every year over thousands, and thooooousands of miles….
If any of the above mentioned teams plays them all they do is given them an out to playing games in the midatlantic area…. noooooo life rafts please…
I was also thinking about something else… if Pitt ups it’s ability a little bit, all of a sudden we could have an annual meeting of two teams which were intense rivals. To the point where that in itself, that we even have a rival to play in. Some of the recruits in PA may want to stay and be a part of something they have grown up with, the PSU Pitt game. (this would take some time however, and it sucks that we’re 20 years behind those days…)
Brawl would be fine and dandy, I wish we could play ND, PSU, WVU every year… but, out of them all PSU I would want more.
Here is a great pic that someone posted online a while ago that I thought a lot of you would enjoy. The glory days of Pitt Stadium (1930ish)
he proclaims to be a pitt person, yet a no show after the big Pitt baseball win.
Rest assured he’d be on here if they lost.
This guy is a fraud. And should be shunned !
Great pic, thanks
Almost looks like the Cathedral is taller than any building in Downtown Pittsburgh !
Veritas et Virtus !
I haven’t heard one thing this guy likes about Pitt, Pittsburgh or anything associated with either.
In my mind that isn’t a Pitt person.
I call em the way I see em !
In hoops, there really is not excuse for not playing WVU or any other former Big East rivals.
Further, he along with you, me and Emel are still anonymous as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve not always agreed with Emel but I must admit that a couple of weeks ago, I was convinced that Upittbb was a Hoopie fan posing as a Pitt fan. I’m very serious!
Little to be gained in playing WVU, that says it all. Especially since going there can be life threatening, car damage etc.
A little sportsmanship would go a long way. Something all fans should embrace. Make the ACC teams feel welcomed when they come to the Burgh. Then kick their asses on the field of play.
Same goes for WVU basketball, they injured one of coaches for crying out loud.
New rivalries will develop over time. They can’t be contrived or dreamt up. They have to develop on the field with real competition. It also has to happen when you are really good and championships are on the line. We have a long way to go until that happens.
I don’t think it will take long to develop a good healthy hatred for Duke and NC in BBall.
It won’t matter in football until we are competitive.
It is still a lot of wins!! Hopefully they can build on it as competition will get more difficult next year.
