The situation with Khaynin Mosley-Smith, Eric Williams and Drew Carswell, is not as bad as it could be. But it really isn’t good. I won’t be surprised if all three never play again for Pitt. I also won’t be shocked if two of the three get reinstated by the start of camp in August.
To say they made some bad choices is putting it mildly.
Police had been conducting an ongoing investigation in South Oakland and bought 20 stamp bags of heroin for $185 on Thursday night outside a house on Juliet Street from a man identified as Darnell Reed-Young, 22, according to a criminal complaint.
Police obtained a search warrant for the house, and as they prepared to enter, a man identified as Khaynin Mosley-Smith, 21, left the house.
Mosley-Smith, a member of the Pitt football team, told police that he lived there.
When police searched the home early Friday, they found drug packaging material and paraphernalia. Also inside were Pitt players Eric Williams, 20, and Andrew Carswell, 21. Police found a digital scale with white residue in Carswell’s bedroom.
Police charged the three football players by summons with prohibited acts.
Reed-Young admitted selling the heroin to a detective, police said, and all three Pitt players live in the home. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail and faces several drug-related charges, including possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
Do I think the three were shooting up or dealing? No. Do I think they were knowingly allowing someone who was dealing, do it from their place? Yes.
I think Carswell is done. With the scale in his room he is looking at being the most directly tied to the dealer and his activities. Not simply knowing what the dealer does, but facilitating. He may be looking at only misdemeanor criminal charges, but those direct connections will be the reason he is almost certainly finished as a player on the football team.
As for Williams and Smith it is less clear. How much did they know? Cynically, do they have plausible deniability?
Now it is possible that Carswell falls on his sword for the other two. He might tell Chryst and the administration that it was all his fault. His “friend.” He let the guy use his room. The other two had nothing to do with it. They, at worst, were guilty of not wanting to get Carswell in trouble.
The problem with that is this part from the P-G story.
Once it was confirmed that the drugs purchased tested positive for heroin, the officers obtained a search warrant for the house. They then called for the city SWAT team to help execute it.
Investigators went in about 1:30 Friday morning. A search of the house revealed drug packaging material and paraphernalia in the common areas of the house, the complaint said.
That’s a little harder to explain away assuming “common areas” means what most of us presume it to mean.
There may be more to the story — there usually is — but right now it does look good for the future of the three as being members of the Pitt football team.
Blaming this on DW is way too convenient.
In fact it’s laughable.
DW hasn’t been around since 2010 and didn’t let these 3 kids associate with a heroin drug dealer.
Reed that is way off base.
>Also posting that scout link on the 2010 recruiting class and using that as some sort of evidence because of the high attrition rate.
Let me see…the 2010 class had 4 different Head Coaches in 3 years (DW, Heyward, Graham & Chryst).
Do you think that might have had something to do with the high attrition rate. lol (just maybe)
Get serious dude.
Which is the NCAA record for most amount of Head Coaches in a 3 year period. Pitt finally has a record in the NCAA record books to be proud of.
There were so many in such a short time it even confuses me sometimes.
>And yet the AD is still here collecting his huge paycheck and his agts are out blaming DW.
When I enrolled my daughter in an all white urban HS, I was shocked when she told me that “dime bags” of herion were being sold in the bathroom daily. I thought she was exagerating until her best friend hung himself while high and my daughter developed addictions to H, alcohal etc.
I had to move her to a new HS and spend 3 years of her living with me to sober her up. She is lucky to be alive and if it wasn’t for her basketball skills, no doubt she would be dead today. Today, she is one of the youngest principals in Baltimore and I am proud of what she accomplished but we barely speak because of the 3 year period of tough love we spent together.
I coached BBall at 3 different HS’s. Heroin was the #1 or # 2 problem at all 3. These were high end suburban HSchools so this is NOT just an inner city problem.
I hope you will all take my story into accound when all the facts come out. Unless the 3 players were being held by a “gang’ at gunpoint and forced to live at that house….I think they should all be prosecuted to the max and toseed off the team immediately.

Bama just played LSU the year before for the NC.
NOBODY but SEC ppl wanted to see them play another SEC for the NC.
Both Oregon & Kansas State would have given Bama a better game than ND. Who knows one of them might have beaten them. Texas A & M did.
ND was annoited to go the NC game last year, if Pitt’s game (29-26 OT) wasn’t proof enough, then might I suggest you watch the key plays on Youtube of the ND/BYU game (17-14) and the ND/Stanford game (20-13).
ND should have had 3 losses last year and played exactly like a 3 loss team in the blowout loss to Alabama.
Hey but it deliver the intended result. Biggest TV ratings for a NC game !
Thanks for sharing that with us and I feel for you friend. Hopefully you and your daughter will have a reconciliation.
I like to think of myself of being somewhat informed but I had no idea Heroin has made such a comeback in our school. Probably because I have no children and the main stream news media is keeping this hidden as possible. Because of various factors no doubt, dealing with the Billion’s being spend on Public Education in this country, the Teacher’s Unions and the Dept of Uneduction.
And as I posted previously, at the least, the 3 are living in a Heroin Distribution Center and need to be off the team, as early as Yesterday.
And quite frankly they should be expelled from
Pitt promptly as well.
Our University should stand for something and let’s take the lead in this kind of matter and turn a disgusting Negative into a Positive.
Something other univerities can model themselves after in how we handle this situation.
That is called Leadership and that is what is sorely lacking in America today.
Pitt has the opportunity here to become a Leader.
I hope someone in the University has the courage to do what is necessary.
If he leaves no big deal, just more playing time for Mike Young.
And yes another open scholie !!!
so i would wait and see.
Alex Schwartz RT @tsnmike: RT @JonRothstein: Pitt’s J.J. Moore will transfer, per a source. 6-6 wing has one year of eligibility remaining.
Some other guy named Alex Klein is reporting it too !
You seem to forget Texas A &M beat Bama on Bama’s home field. So obviously they were beatable.
No ?
How did Louisville (from the worst BCS conference) rout the 2nd best SEC team, that being the great Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl.
Surely a lowly BigEast team could not beat the 2nd best SEC team with all those NFL prospects and draftees.
You SEC ppl kill me.
What’s that leave us with? 5 guys who played last year?
Robinson, Zanna, Wright, Johnson and Patterson?
Sheesh
if they sign him some one at pitt should hang
there head in shame.
to be beat out bye minnesota is worse then severe
to fordum.
As the parent of a 10 year old, the threat of drugs is number one on my list. I can only imagine the anxiety and heartbreak you endured Dan.
Society climbs all over itself for cowards with bombs but “justifies” cowards with drugs. Boston closed itself to the world but the drug trade went on unimpeded.
Simply stated these things kill people, they destroy families and they incubate other crimes and other criminals.
There are higher punishments in PA for doing these things near schools…what a croc! As if simple geography matters to these peddlers of torture.
Get them out of Pitt right now!!!
Just when you thought he was “getting it” he would go into a funk and disappear for 10 games.
JJ was in love with his 3 point shot, problem was most of them never went in (33 % overall, far lower in conf. games)
2012-2013 8 ppg & 3 rpg
transfer has been out there i would wait and see it has never happened before might be all smoke.
but if true we are fucked next year we were all ready down to many players and dixon has signed
all most none,
dont count on freeman or chad frazier till they sign a loi it is all talk and chad has decommited from 2 schools all ready.
Minnesota was in the Round of 32 I believe so they did better than Pitt in the NCAA’s.
Certainly Fordham who has won like 6 A-10 conf. games in 6 years isn’t on par with the Gophers.
Ironically the Gophers beat our old buddy’s team, UCLA in the 1rst round, in a game they said Howland had to win to have ANY chance of keeping his job.
I believe Minnesota fired Tubby Smith after the Gophers got crushed by Florida in the 2nd round.
Why anyone would want to play in that sh*thole compared to play at the magnificent Peterson Events Center is beyond me.
Plus as someone mentioned about weather, Minnesota is lovely in the winter isn’t it. lol
Little Ricky’s kid is the new coach at Minnesota.
And Louisville was on Uchebo’s list. So Little Ricky must have turned Uchebo on to his kid’s new job as HC of the Golden Gophers. (Richard Pitino)
This is too funny !!
and joe was here and they let him leave with out signing plus playing time here at pitt he would have been the only center. and no madder how good
did lat year it is not the bb be all of be all
and with us moveing to ACC we should be racking up the recruits what is up with this.
i dont count walk ons.
are first year in the ACC IS GONE TO SUCK.
DIXON should bring you in to close on the 3 or 4 recruits he wants. becuse he cant sign them we are so very fucked.
However signing period just started this past Weds so I guess until it gets to be really late in this process, we can’t push the “panic button” yet.
In this current crazy world of college sports who know’s what some of these schools are offering players to sign on the dotted line.
These kids today seem to be dictating the whole process instead of the other way around.
As I posted that ESPN insider article on ‘The Entitlement attitude in AAU basketball’ the other day suggests it does.
And oh yea……we need Slice back ! 🙂
slice were are you.
dixon earn your money sign some players
before more of them say lets get out of dodge.
if he signs no one we are so fucked.
as some one said all ready to night what the fuck
is gone on.
No shot clock !
We can do the 4 corners again like UNC with Phil Ford.
We’ll be alright, JD is ready to bring in a flotilla of new players.
You cannot overprotect your kid but I have to tell you, I am not naive, but the things I have seen in HS over the years I coached and the years my daughter was in HS and College would scare any parent to death. I swear that I thought my daughter was making most of it up!
if not we will be pulling people out of the zoo to make a team.
Read Gormans article in the Trib if you feel sympathy for pushers.
That is the one I found first.
Believe me, you can find them on every team.
That was my point. I actually found USC because I googled Clemson and stumbled upon a feud!!!
LOL
No offense intended. Google a team with the words “players arrested”.
You will find every one of them, with a few, if not many articles.
And, like I said, not condoning nor defending Pitt, I’m saying there is garbage and crap everywhere, just like society.
My apologies.
Many schools have courses on “how to dress, manners and how to treat women”.
How sad. Really, really sad.
As far as the recruits being wannies, graham’s or PC’s, we should take a lesson from Dan. At some point, the kids were not taught the difference between right and wrong. If parents don’t do it,society will. Parents need to know that they give their kids a better chance at success versus what socety will give them. There are no free passes. Again, well done Dan. This isn’t a head coach problem, but often the head coach needs to provide the solution. Marijuana, not addictive and not a gateway drug. Any other drug, they need to go away from football. Give each an opportunity of rehab, without football. Require drug testing monthly until graduation. Fail another drug test and you are out of school completely under the “student conduct code”.Sorry and welcome to adulthood,
As far as Pederson is concerned, he needs to go. He leads the programs. All of them. Does he put on monthly mandatory seminars about drugs, gambling, compliance and academics? NO. He sits back and collects a check. Big time programs educate their kids about pitfalls. There are no big time sports alumni that want anything to do with Pederson. That tells you everything you need to know about him. Player behavior falls under the ad.
Moore was the 4th leading scorer last season so his loss will be felt.
Leave us with 6 players from last season.
What is going on with the program?
Word is, Moore is transferring to ….of all
places…….Fordham.
If that’s true, what a loser !
Robinson, on the other hand, seems like a perfect fit …. and can only hope that Young and Newkirk fit in also.
@jackagain. I’ve thought about him being radioactive also. After hearing some of the color guys and talk radio people the past year or two, they confirmed what I assumed.
These players pretty much all know each other from all star games, summer camps etc. etc., and all exchange email’s, become Facebook friends and exchange cell phone numbers.
I hope we aren’t starting to become a “don’t go there” place.
We got Newkirk and Young, we’ll see how the next couple years go I guess.
I wish him luck, but he is neither a Big East nor an ACC player at any position.
Were he transferring to a big time school I think it would be more of a red flag.
H2P!
