Rushel Shell Watch

Wwhhhhyyyyy???????!!!!!!!! Wwwhhhhhyyyyy??????????!!!!!!!!!! Why can’t we have nice things?

Okay, got the whining angst out of the system.

So, the spring practice reports noted that Rushel Shell was not at practice. He had hurt his leg last week, but…

Running back Rushel Shell, who injured his upper leg Friday in practice, was excused Tuesday, although coach Paul Chryst refused to confirm that his absence was injury-related. “Couple things here,” Chryst said. “We’ll kind of work through it and then we’ll see (about Shell returning Thursday). “Not positive on it.”

Okay. I’ve gotten used to vague statements from Coach Chryst. Could be classes. Could be personal. Could be related to the injury.

But then, this

I don’t know at this point. It seems surprising and out of the blue. He’s got his twin daughters that he would be leaving behind, which doesn’t seem to match with everything he has done to this point.

It would make his statements in this puff piece from 3 weeks ago look kind of silly.

“I’m just working my hardest so one day I could be in that category and when I’m gone, people can say I was a great running back at Pitt,” Shell said.

I’m not ready to panic on this right now. Right now this is just an unsourced twitter report. It could be a nothing. It could be that Shell is having some doubts. Working through some things, as it were.

I’m sure Pitt fans will deal with this in the calm, stoic manner to which they handle everything.

Put Boyd at running back.

Just read this in the comment section of the Cardiac Hill blog that is following the same Shell transfer issue. I have no idea whether this is an accurate fact or just somebody else blowing smoke up my skirt, but here it is.

“I know the family of a local kid who is on the team. Apparently, transfer discussions have been going on for a while discretely. Shell and PC aren’t quite on the same page. Shell is not a motivated practice player and likes to save it for the field. PC is very high on how you practice determines not only how you play but if you play. Reminds me a little of Iverson in Philly. I think in some respect Shell is looking for entitlement to the starting position regardless. PC is not that way which one must respect”

Comment by Dr. Tom 03.27.13 @ 12:52 pm

Either Shell has made his decision or he is playing Chicken with Chryst. Either way, how often do you see these things work out?

It really is too bad and as someone said above lose-lose. Even if things were worked out “it was all a big misunderstanding”, how much confidence would there be in Shell moving forward. Football is a team sport, how does the rest of the team react to this kind of nonsense.

Chyrst is a no-nonsense guy, setting the rules, good on him.

Comment by gc 03.27.13 @ 12:54 pm

Who knows, maybe Shell is just providing some needed interesting topic of conversation for us Pitt Football Faithful, since we no longer have our traditional whipping boy (whose name rhymes with vino) to rake over the coals anymore. Somebody has got to take the heat!

Comment by Dr. Tom 03.27.13 @ 12:58 pm

Anyone else following the WPIAL_Insider tweets? They just tweeted that Desean Rippy is transfering to WVU and maybe taking Shell with him….

Comment by JCE 03.27.13 @ 12:58 pm

Like I said, “The Young and the Restless”!

Comment by Dr. Tom 03.27.13 @ 1:04 pm

JCE, I don’t know where you’re seeing the Desean Rippy stuff. I’m on the WPIAL_Insider twitter page and I see nothing about it. The guy sure is patting himself on the back for breaking the Shell news, that’s for sure.

Comment by Panther Pride 03.27.13 @ 1:08 pm

Well, it would be a shame if Shell goes at this point, especially considering how he impressed me last year with his talk about wanting to get an engineering degree so he could provide for his family without depending on the NFL.

But, in terms of football, it’s not that huge of a drop-off. Shell was good at times last year but not consistently great, and never learned to block. Bennett is faster and shiftier, and looked better to me a lot of the time, at least when he got into the game, more like Graham. If I recall correctly, Shell was doing nothing in the bowl game, Bennett came in for a couple of series and ripped the defense apart, then they took him right back out never to be seen again – drove me nuts.

I hope the kid stays for his own sake, but if not, I don’t think it’s a disaster by any means. There are a few good guys behind Bennett as well.

Comment by SteveS 03.27.13 @ 1:10 pm

You may need to resfresh. It is 3 tweets above the Kyle Daughtery retweet.

Comment by JCE 03.27.13 @ 1:10 pm

I’m going back to just reading newspapers! All this stress with Dixon and now this, can’t take it! When can we catch a break? I know if he leaves we will move on and like someone said this program is about more than one player but man it’s disheartening! Move doesn’t make sense all the way round, especially after the article about him a couple weeks ago. This twitter thing is great but 19 tear olds need to take a night to think it over before they tweet! Lose-lose situation is right. I hope this gets cleared up soon! Hail to Pitt everyone!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 03.27.13 @ 1:16 pm

All there is to say about this is you want to play or you don’t. If you want to play, you play by the rules and like everyone else who is part of the team and striving to be the best teammate and player they can be. If you don’t like that you have to work and practice and abide by the rules, then transfer. It’s simple. We don’t need or want bad apples. Hopefully this is all overblown garbage ….or these guys realize what is best for them. If they really think they should leave and go somewhere else cause it won’t be as hard, then that’s up to them and I say “good luck on your journey and btw don’t think about coming back here cause we ain’t takin you back”.

Comment by JJ 03.27.13 @ 1:38 pm

Oy Vey

And to think we lost the RB from New Jersey, Cory Clements and the one from Florida, Jojo Heath or something, basically cause they knew we had Shell as the feature back.

Just another week in Pitt sports history.

We Pitt fans got to be some of the strongest people aroud.

Comment by wbb 03.27.13 @ 1:45 pm

EMel, this is what pisses me off, the timing of this thing. I’m all for the kid wanting to do what he feels is right for him, but in the middle of Spring practice? That’s pretty selfish on his part. He’s letting the coaches and players down, if he leaves at this point. Sure would have been nice to have heard this prior to recruiting season. Timing is everything.

Comment by Panther Pride 03.27.13 @ 1:50 pm

The timing makes one consider that the gab about him being a lazy practice player might be more than just wind.Sometimes I think the money these coaches make is crazy but then I think how do you gain the trust of, control and motivate a bunch of pampered teenagers into working together to their full potential.I am glad I chose work that has a little more security even if the pay is less at least I won’t be missing lunch because some kid thought he could run things better than me.

Comment by spiritofsection22 03.27.13 @ 2:06 pm

Goodbye, Good luck.

Comment by PittStadiumShuffle 03.27.13 @ 2:07 pm

I read on twatter that Pitt’s five 2013 O-line recruits are transferring to FGCU. Apparently, they all want to be power forwards…….

Seriously, if the O-line develops (which is a strength of PC), then the running game should be fine regardless of who is running the ball.

Shell has issues. On the (practice) field as well as off. Does he think transferring will make things all better?

I do like that PC isn’t taking any crap from his players. That being said, based on this and other incidents/suspensions/absences, it might be 3-4 years before he has HIS team together. It doesn’t bode well for the inaugural ACC season.

Comment by pghFred 03.27.13 @ 2:09 pm

How about Khem Birch at tailback??

Comment by Dan 03.27.13 @ 2:10 pm

If Shell leaves its a reflection in Shell not PC. PC is going to build a good program for the reasons stated here today… no BS, no smoke and mirrors, just football baby… WPA style.

Interesting comments on the locker room the last few years… really can see how PC has been working hard to get control of the hearts and minds of this team.

Comment by Pittscript 03.27.13 @ 2:15 pm

@ Panther Pride, “thats pretty selfish on his part”. Yeah think??????

Featured recruit with the the opportunity of a lifetime sitting right there in front of him for the taking. All he has to do is work for it.

Says he wants to be held in the same regard as Tony Dorsett once his football career is history.

Name droppin a Pitt legend has consequences. As a well known politician once pontificated. Mr. Shell, I knew Mr. Anthony Dorsett, Anthony Dorsett was a friend of mine, you Sir are no Mr. Dorsett. At least not yet, and if you transfer, you never will be.

Comment by Dr. Tom 03.27.13 @ 2:17 pm

Didn’t Shell have an off the feild incident in Oakland last season? What brcame of that?

Comment by spiritofsection22 03.27.13 @ 2:20 pm

To take your mind off the current Pitt debacle.

This flys in the face of needing Top 50 or even Top 100 players.

Shell’s “magic” only will work in Western Pa.

Maybe someone should tell the kid before he ruins his life.

Never heard again about that hotshot kid RB from North Hills HS who thought he was better than Pitt and went down to Miami.

Comment by EMel 03.27.13 @ 2:29 pm

Guys – take a hard look at who produced what at RB last season. I wrote on here before and I’ll repeat it – Issac Bennett was actually more productive with less carries than Shell was in 2012.

Bennett had 4.9 ypc while shell had 4.5. As a matter of fact nine RBs (some more than once) had better YPC average than did Shell last year.

It wasn’t like he was a TD machine either with a rather poor four TDs to 141 carries which was a .028 rate.

Grahams’s was 11 to 222 for a .049 rate and Bennett’s beat both with three on 29 carries for a rate of .10.

This talk about Shell going to the NFL after two years of college cracks me up – where in the world did you see that in his play last season?

He had one (1!) game where he excelled – that VA Tech game. Contrast that with seven games where he had 3.9 ypc or less.

Chryst wasn’t enamored by Shell last season either. From mid-season on there wasn’t a game where Shell got more than 11 carries except for the bowl game when Graham didn’t play. Guys, Shell was #2 RB behind a gimpy TB who lost a lot of speed and gassed out early on in the games and still Shell couldn’t get more carries. 25 carries for 79 yards and zero TDs in that start – not real great either.

That tells you something about how the staff viewed Shell IMO.

Comment by Reed 03.27.13 @ 2:51 pm

Agree Reed,

I just didn’t want to mention all that, for fear of being labeled…..a Negative….very bad meanie.

And yes you are ! 🙂

Comment by EMel 03.27.13 @ 3:01 pm

If Shell’s practice habits are in fact an issue would someone
name a college coach who is going to let a running back
dog it in practice then start the kid on Saturday?

Comment by JR 03.27.13 @ 3:06 pm

Hard to rest on your laurels when your 19 years old. Last time I checked “the what have you done for me lately” concept tends to be the operative attitude regarding an individual’s worth to the bigger picture.

You gotta earn it every day! The concept applies across all occupations. Football player or brain surgeon, doesn’t matter.

Memo to Mr. Shell, practice like you play and practice every day, sorry but it doesn’t work any other way.

Comment by Dr. Tom 03.27.13 @ 3:12 pm

Issac Bennett will be the next Charles Gladman, in a long line of durable, come from nowhere Pitt backs that take an advantage of the opportunities they are presented with.

Comment by Panther Fan in Hoopieland 03.27.13 @ 3:20 pm

The fact that this obviously isn’t just a rumor has meaning. At best Shell is considering transfering so he obviously isn’t committed to Pitt. That being said unlees Shell does an about face immediately it is time to send a message to the rest of the troops. Pitt doesn’t owe Shell anything so since he is the one uncertain about his comitment pack up your big rep, poor example, not much character, self worshipping act and go.Some how, some way, we’ll manage to survive without you. Please take your selfish loser attitude with you.

Comment by spiritofsection22 03.27.13 @ 3:35 pm

I just cant believe Shell doesn’t have someone reaching out to him right now, imploring him to think about what he’s doing…

I mean how can you walk away from this opportunity. He’s in a position to be the feature back in the ACC, with a coach that will feed him. What more do you want??.. How do you walk away from that to go sit around for the next 18 months, getting out of shape somewhere “out west”, just to have to compete for a position that you had already earned? I mean its insane, makes no sense at all. Think about what you’re doing and the consequences your decisions will have…

All that said, props to HCPC for not putting up with his crap. If Shell wants to fake injuries, and not put the work in, then why the hell should HCPC put the effort and work in on him… What an ass.

Comment by BostonsCommon 03.27.13 @ 3:36 pm

Reed, your logic is flawed. To point out that Shell isn’t that good, you say look at the playing time for Shell it shows Chryst wasn’t enamored with him and that Bennett won’t be a drop off. But when you say that you are ignoring the fact that Bennett basically got no carries as soon as Shell showed he wasn’t grossly negligent with pass protection. So what does that say about the staff’s views of Bennett if he couldn’t get carries over someone that the staff didn’t like?

Comment by Wardapalooza 03.27.13 @ 3:37 pm

coach should say if you think my practice are rough wait till you get to the pros if you ever do
becuse they wont want you there if you cant cut it here.
man up or get out.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.27.13 @ 4:10 pm

Ward – Shell was the #2 RB last season. That wasn’t in dispute and I wouldn’t have changed things. I think that PITT fans are extremely over-hyping Shell and have done so since he was considering coming to PITT.

Let’s do away with the “He was only a true FR last year” stance that I’ve read elsewhere also – PITT has had at least three true FR RBs way surpass what Shell did last year as far as production to carries goes.

My referencing Bennett wasn’t so much that I thought he should have played over Shell last season – although I would have liked to have seen more of him – but that Bennett will have a good chance to take this opportunity and be as, or more, productive as Shell was.

Comment by Reed 03.27.13 @ 4:40 pm

I want to make something clear here also – I want Shell to decide to stay at PITT, bust his ass and become a star RB if possible. I think he has talent and would be the starting RB next season.

Personally, I believe this would benefit him and his young family in many ways, one of which is the fact that PITT has put some decent RBs into NFL rosters over the last decade.

I also hope he realizes that PITT can afford him an excellent education.

But should he opt to leave I won’t break down in tears.

Comment by Reed 03.27.13 @ 4:52 pm

Reed – great comments… fully agree on all points.

Comment by JLawrence 03.27.13 @ 5:04 pm

Young kids often do stupid things for all the wrong reasons. Sometimes they wise up and right their own ships before it is too late. Sometimes they end up just reliving their high school glory days while they punch the timeclock for a living to get by for the rest of their lives. This situation is just too bad really, for everyone concerned.

Shell has the potential, but then again, potential don’t pay the electric bill, does it?

Comment by Dr. Tom 03.27.13 @ 5:42 pm

Reed, Dr. Tom others… good points. Just listened to audio on 97.3 The Fan and the guy was saying how PC was meeting with Shell this morning to ‘convince him to stay’… I don’t think so!

As folks said here PC is not about kissing ass with spoiled players to sell them to stay here.

addition by subtraction… doesn’t matter how talented Shell is… if he is not 110% effort and leader of this offense then he is a cancer and continues part of this sour locker room folks above mentioned and that PC is cleaning up.

I was always puzzled that he was compared to the great Tony D…. yet for all of his power dragging people on him… I did not see a great burst to the hole, and never saw anything like break away speed to the next level, let along to the house.

A Focused and Intense O’ ready to play will be better and someone will step up.

Oh and I am sure Saban is just burning up the phone line now with this kid… NOT.

Hey… Don’t let the Door hit you in the ass on the way out…. good luck kid, you’ll need it.

Comment by Pittscript 03.27.13 @ 6:23 pm

Pittscript,well put.

Comment by spiritofsection22 03.27.13 @ 6:32 pm

I just saw an interview with Shell where he said the biggest difference between HS and college was that in HS his team threw the ball about once per game and he literally never had to pass block. Which means young Mr. Shell was the beginning and end of that offense and on passing plays was probably our on a wheel route or something.

He racked up huge yards yet was totally unable to read defenses well enough to be able to pass block on the college level.

It was probably the first time in his football career that he wasn’t the best at something. It was also the first time in his career that he had to subjugate his play to allow someone else to execute on the field by making his QB have time to complete passes.

I understand that the staff went into a total teaching mode with him last year because he had a greatly enhanced playbook and new pass blocking responsibilities.

Now – fast forward to this spring when Shell, after a full year of college ball under his belt, makes those same mistakes. It isn’t a teaching moment any longer but a “get your ass in gear or else” moment. Second year starters can’t be making rookie mistakes and have to grow skin tough enough to absorb the heavy handed approach the staff takes with them.

Some HS stars can deal with all of that easily and take those ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’ in stride… some can’t.
