Selection Sunday

You know, when you aren’t on the bubble and you aren’t on the top 4 seed lines, this seems like a whole lot of standing around for nothing. All the talking heads on CBS and ESPN. Along with the punditry online and in print are focused on the #1 seeds and the last 4 in (along with last 4 out and 4 more after that for good measure).

Pitt falls into neither of those places. Pitt will be seeded somewhere in the #5 to #7 range. The seeding will have to take into account the seeding of Big East teams placed ahead of Pitt.

Louisville is expected to be a #1 seed. Georgetown, a #2 or #3. Syracuse a #3 or #4. Marquette will be somewhere in the #4 or #5. Notre Dame is probably a #5 or #6. (Villanova and Cinci will likely be anywhere from #9 to #11)

Where they get seeded and what bracket they get placed will have a significant impact on Pitt’s seeding. Protected seeds — the first 4 lines — will keep conference foes from facing each other in the opening weekend.

So, for example, say the committee made a Pitt a #5 seed but Pitt got placed in the same region as #4 seed Marquette. If the committee could not make it work to switch them to another region, they could drop Pitt down to the #6 seed so that they avoid any potential 1st weekend meeting.

Needless to say, seeding after first few spots is more of a point of pride than true relevance. Match-ups become much more important. Who you face and potentially face in each round makes a bigger difference.

The selection show starts at 6pm on CBS. The babbling and endless analysis goes on through tomorrow.

Syracuse got a pretty easy ticket to the Sweet 16 as a 4 seed who was reeling before the BE tourney and blew a 16 point 2nd half lead.

No matter, looks like they’ll get to play IU in the Sweet 16.

Illinois 22-12 8-10 in the big ten

@Frankcan.

No doubt us ppl who have followed Pitt for decades knows if there’s a choice the Committee will ALWAYS screw PITT.

I just wrote the other day how they put us in far away places like Boise, Idaho, El Paso and where was it the one year we played Pacific. Somewhere way out west.

The UCLA sweet 16 game was way our west as well I think.

We’ll be lucky to win one game this year, imo.

Comment by EMel 03.17.13 @ 6:26 pm

@Tony C

That was only because we finished first in the bigeast though years, as I noted in my post.

They couldn’t screw with Pitt those years, but in fact they did with the matchups. lol

They will get Pitt one way or the other, no doubt.

Comment by EMel 03.17.13 @ 6:28 pm

Anyway haven’t had time to analyze the brackets but I need to go outside and get some exercise before it gets to dark.

Since I knew we were going to be screwed, I’m not that pissed.

Sometimes it’s a bitch to know what’s going to happen. 🙂

I got money to make and not burn. Elite 8 baby!

Comment by TX Panther 03.17.13 @ 6:33 pm

Pitt is a lot better team than they are getting credit for. Just look at who Pitt has beaten and who Gonzaga has beaten this season. The Panthers have to get ready to play and beat Witchita State. As long as they are ready to go on Thursday and play well, that’s all we can ask. I wouldn’t talk about where they are, or who they have to beat in the following round. They have to win this game.

Comment by Justinian 03.17.13 @ 6:34 pm

Once the first 3 regions were revealed, and I knew we were heading West, and that OSU would be the 2 seed in our region, I had that brief hope that we would be a 7 seed in Dayton. But no, Notre Dame gets the 4 hour drive. We get booted out to Salt Lake City, and poor Syracuse has to go to San Jose.

I haven’t watched Wichita State at all this year. The only time I watched Gonzaga is when they blew their game against Butler (we’re kindred spirits, I guess).

Honestly, I see us going out in the first round. We’re going to lose at the free throw line.

Comment by J 03.17.13 @ 6:39 pm

No gifts, got to earn it. I think they looked at 7 teams from the big east we were number 5 therefore we’re an 8 seed. If we get past Wichita it will be fun to play Gonzaga, always a crowd favorite.

Comment by gc 03.17.13 @ 6:40 pm

justinian that is true but it does not change
the fact that they look to screw us every year
with placement or matchup or seeding they allwys do
we never get the matchup or partof the country
we should be in some one hates us and untill he dies or quits we will be screwed.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.17.13 @ 6:44 pm

Then Pitt can screw those fuckers right back. We know how it feels. Time for those other bitches to take it. Sorry for the French but Pitt can’t have the attitude of woe is me…nobody respects us… Boo hoo. Go out and win and slap those teams around and prove to that stupid selection committee that you are better than an 8 seed. Just do it and prove it.

Comment by TX Panther 03.17.13 @ 6:50 pm

No one had lower than 7th as seeding scenario for Pitt. Sending them to Salt Lake City to boot is beyond BS. At least this team has played pretty well on the road even if it’s never been this far

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 03.17.13 @ 6:52 pm

we bitch about our seed just about every year and then we get beat by a lower seed (except 06) … when we start beating higher seeds, then we can bitch

Comment by wbb 03.17.13 @ 7:03 pm

Regret that Pitt is playing in the west. However
Would really enjoy seeing our guys play
the Zags.

Comment by JR 03.17.13 @ 7:03 pm

i just thought of something if these teams beat
us and they are both in bumfuck some were in the sticks and we are in the big east why do they have better players then us.
how do these no were schools in no were conference get better players then we do.
did you ever wonder abought that.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.17.13 @ 7:04 pm

I’m having flashbacks of the year we lost to pacific! Unknown team who probably plays a totally different style of hoops! They have 3 guys who average double figures. I hope I am wrong but I just don’t have a good feeling this year but let’s all remember where we were last year! Cba! So at least we are back in the big dance! Go Pitt! Play without fear of anything play the way we know you can. Play like the team that crushed g town and the cuse!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 03.17.13 @ 7:07 pm

Get over it, the BIGGEST reason for the 8 seed is the very weak out of conference schedule, and it probaby has been a reason for us getting “screwed” in some of past year’s seeds and placements.
Now lets go and win 2 out west!!!!! HTP!!!

Comment by TVax 03.17.13 @ 7:19 pm

No sir, it’s more likely a critical call here or there will be adverse, but with some aspect of stellar play Pitt can neutralize the calls. The memory of bullshit offense foul on Brown’s bucket from right of key that would have put us up by 5 in our last NCAA game with 7 minutes left. Butler’s Howard, who hit Brown on that critical call had 1 personal late in 2nd half but was banging into Pitt players all game. No sir, I’ve seen in person enough strange bullshit calls, some I can attribute to homerism, like that bullshit call in NY when St Johns guard was on the inline before his winning shot. Pitt’s kids have to handle the bad calls, cause they’re coming.

Comment by Old School Panther 03.17.13 @ 7:23 pm

Frankcan….I’ve been wondering that for years….especially since Pitt got trashed by Pacific.

Comment by Jackagain 03.17.13 @ 7:34 pm

And BTW, where is Kentucky seeded and placed this year?

Comment by TVax 03.17.13 @ 7:36 pm

I’ve seen WS play twice. Once against Creighton. They at up tempo. Push the ball; shoot and consider every shot a miss. Meaning they look to rebound. Not great shooters but they get off shots.
Pitt can wear their asses down or we can slug it out. If Dixon lets them play, we can win. If we slug it out, this board will be a study in restrained postal behavior.

Comment by SFPitt 03.17.13 @ 7:40 pm

Pitt was officially seeded 31 overall.

Look I totally agree that regardless of seed Pitt has to play whos in front of them, but 8 in SLC is – with all due objectivity – ridiculous for a team ranked #17 this week. I sincerely doubt that had we come back and beat Syracuse on Thursday that we would be a 4 and Syracuse an 8, even though we would have beaten them twice and finished ahead of them in the regular season.

I take solace in the fact that Pitt not the only power conference team screwed. Mid majors MWC and A10 got way too much respect. UNC is better than an 8. Oregon should be higher than 12. Craziness. This is actually the worst overall seeding job that I can remember. They didnt even get the top 4 right. But one thing you can always count on: Ohio St. not leaving the state of Ohio on the first weekend.

Mississippi will win the bracket easily. Best team in the bracket. Dominated a solid Gator team today.

@iron duke
Ohio State won their conference tourney. Beat number one seed IU at Bloomington 2 weeks ago. Beat MSU. Beat everyone that matters in their conference.. Has serious Final four history that we don’t and has fans by the millions. Plus, has beaten PSU 18 straight in hoops.
Now, exactly what do we have to match that?
I’m not holding my breath.

Comment by SFPitt 03.17.13 @ 9:24 pm

Fellow Panther fans, take heart! Yes, we have been HIGHLY disrespected with the 8 seed and the west region (Pitt playing in Salt Lake – really?). However, every time we have a high seed and/ or a “doable” path to succeed we play tight and play “not to lose”. With this much disrespect, if JD can’t light a fire under the teams butt and his OWN butt we are in serious trouble. I believe we will play with a real chip on our shoulder to prove to the world that we can beat anyone in front of us on any court on any day. Panthers: KICK SOME BUTT. Let’s go Pitt!!!

Comment by pittman4ever 03.17.13 @ 9:51 pm

SF, wasn’t comparing Pitt to Ohio St. And I stand corrected, they did have to travel to Pittsburgh last year.
