One way or another Villanova was going to get paid. Ultimately it looks like they will go for the double-dip.

The way has been cleared for Pitt to play its first ACC football game Labor Day night Sept. 2 against Florida State at Heinz Field, and the conference will make an official announcement Monday, a high-ranking college football source said Saturday.

The game will be televised by ESPN.

Pitt was scheduled to play Villanova on Aug. 31, but that game has been canceled.

Villanova has scheduled another game against an FBS opponent to replace Pitt this season. Florida State and Pitt officials declined comment, and an ACC official did not respond to phone calls and an email for comment.

Army looks like the likely team for Villanova.

As for Pitt, it will almost certainly be another 1-AA patsy, given that Pitt would have had to buy their way out of the Nova game. Not to mention Pitt will need to find a team that has an opening in their schedule, and willing to go on the road somewhere midway in the season (apparently Stony Brook is available).

Still, for those who want Pitt to make every effort to enter the ACC with a splash, this is a no-brainer.

It’s always seems to be a compromise for Stevie P though I guess the perception of playing Stony Brook isn’t that much worse than Villanova

Comment by wbb 02.23.13 @ 4:03 pm

Just to be clear. You aren’t really trying to blame Pederson and/or Pitt for the likelihood of scheduling a 1-AA game to replace Villanova in Late February?

Given that schedules for most programs in 1-A are set 3 years out, finding an open partner — let alone one willing to go on the road — are slim pickings.

Comment by Chas 02.23.13 @ 4:44 pm

Very glad they got this deal done. Now I just have to hope that tickets and flights aren’t too expensive so I can get down there for the game.

Comment by MikePITT 02.23.13 @ 4:54 pm

Good move, this had to happen, ordered extra season tickets, can’t wait.

Comment by Moe Greene 02.23.13 @ 5:02 pm

do we know who takes villanova place and what the date of that game is.

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.23.13 @ 5:12 pm

I’m not blaing Pedersen for scheduling Stony Brook at this late date. What Pedersen seems to lack is the foresight, planning or charisma for getting Pitt ur of these situations. Just a year ago, Pedersen ‘was forced’ to schedule 2 D1-AA teams this past season. 3 years ago, he scheduled against his coaches wishes an opener in a tough environment that ended up on CBSSprots (cable) network.

Why does it always seem to be Pitt to be the one to sacrifice?

Comment by wbb 02.23.13 @ 5:15 pm

Pederson has, for some time now, reached his highest level of competency … let’s call it the Peder Principle.

If it was good enough for him to fire Wanny, it’s good enough to fire him

Comment by wbb 02.23.13 @ 5:20 pm

I was in favor of playing FSU on Labor Day until PC announced House. I am afraid that with this rookie as DC that Florida State will turn the game into a track meet.

Comment by Houston Panther 02.23.13 @ 5:29 pm

Everything to gain and nothing to lose playing FSU first. Pitt’s not going to be expected to hang so if we win, Pitt is on the map the first week of the season. If Pitt loses, it was expected and not the worst thing we’ve seen the last few years. The way he selected House is suspect but no one knows what kind of potential they guy has. Lets watch a few games before passing judgement. I’m much more upset with the selection process more than the who was hired. If he doesn’t work out, there are a ton of DC candidates on the market each year … very easily replaceable.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 02.23.13 @ 5:34 pm

It is not my nature to be pessimistic, But— I am apprehensive about my Panthers on national tv vs, a VERY gifted team in the Seminoles. Incidentally, Sal Sunseri is now the Defensive Ends coach for the lads from the sunshine state, Revenge is sweet, so if Sal has any animosity for the way Pitt fans treated his son,Tino. well. ‘neough said!!! Rev. george from Columbus

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 02.23.13 @ 5:35 pm

This is awesome…An opening game like this will make the spring and summer camps more focused and intense.

Comment by HbgFrank 02.23.13 @ 5:40 pm

Paterson WAS forced. The BE let TCU walk without so much as an apology. It takes time to schedule these games. This late in the off-season it would be hard to get a good I-AA team on the schedule – so Stony Brook it is.

Comment by Chuck Morris 02.23.13 @ 5:47 pm

I hear that Mt. Lebanon has an open date on the schedule. Maybe Coach Hearing can pull a few strings and get them to play?

Comment by Justinian 02.23.13 @ 5:53 pm

Rev.George, It is what it is. The game is now booked. It’s a big game on nationnal television. Regradless of the outcome, I am fairly confident that the sun will come up the following morning.

Comment by Justinian 02.23.13 @ 5:57 pm

Is anyone on this site still questioning Georgetown’s ranking? BTW, did anyone notice how biased Rafferty and Brando was towards the Hoyas?

Comment by wbb 02.23.13 @ 6:02 pm

lol, no I’m questioning Syracuse’s ranking now.

Comment by EMel 02.23.13 @ 6:09 pm

yep CUSE goes down by 11 and only scores 46 at home..

Comment by Julius Page's Headband 02.23.13 @ 6:11 pm

I don’t care at this point who we play, because it’s going to be difficult find a quality opponent, so late into the game. So if we have a game against The Little Sisters of the Poor, so be it. With the move to the ACC, the schedule will be much better than last year.

Comment by Justinian 02.23.13 @ 6:12 pm

They don’t seem to fall OUT of the Top 10 regardless of who they lose to.

Cuse has lost to 3 unranked BigEast teams yet nothing moves them down the rankings.

Must be all those Cuse alumni in broadcasting.

Comment by EMel 02.23.13 @ 6:13 pm

Why Cornhole Stevie even scheduled Villimanilli in the first place was beyond absurd.

It was a huge win/win for them…and a HUGE LOSE/LOSE FOR US.

Typical of the A-Hole.

Comment by EMel 02.23.13 @ 6:15 pm

I guess Gardner-Webb wasn’t available for a return engagement. lol

Comment by EMel 02.23.13 @ 6:17 pm

Oh and someone keep a mallot nearby if he attempts to even think about calling up any schools in Ohio.

And I mean ANY !!!

Comment by EMel 02.23.13 @ 6:19 pm

FSU is losing a ton from last season, I’d much rather catch them early. ACC is doing us a big favor here.

Comment by Pabs 02.23.13 @ 7:39 pm

Publicity is publicity is publicity!
Come to Pitt and play Villanova on channel 153…OR
Come to Pitt and play FSU on national TV.
This is a “no brainer”!
Wanna be the best? Beat the best.

Comment by SFPitt 02.23.13 @ 7:47 pm

Great opening game – now the Pitt script – dump Pittsburgh Panther picture.

Comment by Frank MD 02.23.13 @ 8:19 pm

At least we won’t lose to Youngstown St to start the season!

Comment by Dan 72 02.23.13 @ 8:32 pm

Ditto that Frank MD…

well now, this will get folks focused starting March 5th!

For this admitted optimist it is a good litmus test… this either goes down like Notre Dame back when Wannie made a big tadoo about his vaunted program building… in which case the skeptical point of view unfortunately starts to be validated about PC…

… or we play a close game and its a decent sign.
… or we shock the world, win, and drink more Kool-Aid. šŸ™‚

hey it will be good to see this football philosophy of big ugly/physical football of Chryst + WPA tradition vs the “speed” of “ACC” football.

No excuses… gotta show we can kick some ass and handle it.

Comment by Pittscript 02.23.13 @ 8:34 pm

For anyone intersted the spread on tomorrow’s Pitt/St John’s game is out…Pitt favored by 6.5.
Like it’s even been close to accurate!

Pitt in for a very rough game.

Comment by Dan 72 02.23.13 @ 8:36 pm

wasn’t pitt favored by 10.5 last Monday?

Comment by wbb 02.23.13 @ 9:08 pm

Though I know that Pitt is to be feared in New York City, with their lock down defense and incredibly efficient offense, in spite of all of that, Pitt by 6 is a lock for St. Johns.

Actually, Pitt by 6 is a lock for anyone playing them. I think Pitt was a 6 point favorite over Butler, many, many years ago. We only lost by a couple then.

I understand Jamie Dixon, based on his astonishing NCAA tournament performance, and his CBA championship, deserves the right to f up royally for several years to come. He has earned it. And after all, it took Coach K baybee 10 years to win a championship. Oh, but wait – hasn’t Jamie been our head coach for 10 years? How time flies.

Malcolm Gilbert, where are you?

Comment by PO'd Panther 02.23.13 @ 10:39 pm

So sick of crap like this coming from PO’d Panther and some others. I mean, why even bother continuing with life when that is your handle?

Comment by panther94 02.23.13 @ 11:06 pm

Bring on the noles! The acc rolled out the red carpet for us this year and we will seize that opportunity! What a great chance to show off your skills and compete against the best of the acc! I say we should relish the challenge! We usually play better against great opponents anyway. Speaking of Labor Day check out the script pitt guys Facebook, bad ass poster of the Labor Day battle with Pitt and Fsu! That would sell thousands of more tix!

Comment by Sweet Caroline 02.23.13 @ 11:24 pm

If we don’t fill the stadium that night, the national exposure won’t be worth what some hope.

Comment by Joe Lawrence 02.24.13 @ 12:22 am

FSU is losing a ton from last season, Iā€™d much rather catch them early. ACC is doing us a big favor here.

Comment by Pabs 02.23.13 @ 7:39 pm

Timeout…I gotta take a break. Girls with long legs are quite the workout, lol.

Agree Pabs, House or no House, maybe we catch them before they have a QB with some game time.

A repeat of the Va Tech game perhaps.
Maybe we have small advantage if Savage is ready to play !!!

Comment by EMel 02.24.13 @ 12:28 am

How come Villimanilli can beat Marquette but we can’t. Is that twice now for V this year.

Believe it or not, now Cuse & MU both have 4 losses.

Still have a chance if we start winning. I know if.
And if ..goes with …..hope.

Hoopies got another beatdown today, this time in Morganhole, gotta love that.

Did I say I hate Noon games. After late nights.

Comment by EMel 02.24.13 @ 12:35 am

No Tino + Great Schedule = higher attendance

Comment by Coach Ditka 02.24.13 @ 7:39 am

Emel, guess it’s a matter of match-ups and style of play. I wasn’t that concerned about the loss to Marquette, they haven’t lost a home yet and came off an embarrassing loss.

Of course, the common element in both losses to Marquette were getting bdly outrebounded

Comment by wbb 02.24.13 @ 9:08 am

So glad the Labor Day game is on. It is a great opportunity and great exposure for the program, and creates hype that has been absent from any home games since the Cincy de facto championship game. And though many of us tend to see Pitt’s glass as perpetually half-empty (or more likely that Pitt will find a way to knock the glass over and spill the drink), as Tossing Thabeets said, nothing to lose in this situation.

And…though it has zero on-field performance impact, it means the world to fans, could really send excitement for this game and the beginning of the ACC era over the top, and could be a marketing windfall: bring the Script back for this game. There will never be a better time.

As for hoops, after the last two performances, don’t feel good about today’s game. Hoping they can find a way to grind one out and build some stretch momentum. H2P

Comment by Iron Duke 02.24.13 @ 9:29 am

At least we get the ‘Noles at home for our inaugural year in the ACC — and on national television. What’s to complain about? Oh, I forgot, this is a Pitt Blog where whining is an art form. Pittites should visit a GA Tech board to get the real lowdown on the ACC

This is a done deal???? I thought that the schedule for the ACC doesn’t come out until tomorrow? I understand the assumption, but you know what they say about assuming?

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.24.13 @ 9:57 am

It is a small world. A Pitt alum defends GA Tech’s not going to the B1G rumor.

Some points: TV money not unlimited, TV eyes not increasing, travel budgets increase and game attendance down.

Grass not always greener.

Comment by Frank MD 02.24.13 @ 10:17 am

Hey, lets go big time here. Baylor was supposed to play at SMU. SMU cancelled, leaving an opening for Baylor. Lets get Baylor at home this year, and give them a road game some time in the future.

Comment by hacky3 02.24.13 @ 2:28 pm

FWIW, Stony Brook beat Villanova in the FCS playoffs last year.

Comment by srb 02.24.13 @ 2:36 pm

Did anybody see that TV graphic during WVU’s basketball game with Ok St ? WVU’s basketball ,team has logged over 32,000 miles this season and they still have road games to play. They have circled the globe !

Comment by spindler's spirit 02.24.13 @ 3:22 pm

FSU vs Pitt great get for us. Outstanding way to start the season.

Who cares who they find to replace Nova. The schedule is in
a state of flux. Thank the BE.

We are moving to higher ground!

Comment by JR 02.24.13 @ 6:13 pm

@spindler’s spirit
That 32,000 miles traveled by WVUlgars mens hoops team sounds like the punchline to a joke about their guard play!
Now throw in womens hoops, swimming, volleyball etc. and you got yourself a trip to the moon.
I think Huggins has eaten a snickers bar for every mile!
Does Ollie Luck travel with the team? Hope so. He wanted the Dust Bowl conference, he got it. Well really he wanted the ACC, but the ACC doesn’t admit Junior Colleges.

Comment by SFPitt 02.24.13 @ 9:18 pm

Had a chance to take in a WVU radio show this evening. The announcers for the various teams were admitting that the travel killed the team this year and they expect the ncaa to change travel rules to help them out next year. Gotta blame something for their respective poor performances right!

The fact is that WVU remains on an island as far as league competitors and recruiting. You have to re-think WVU as a choice because of the travel, the team and the propensity of their players for getting arrested. Two more this past weekend! The big12 will struggle in bball tourney except for kansas.

I agree with the comments about Steve P being terrible and I am not going to jump on that bandwagon this evening. I have led that charge for years!I do like the game against fsu early. That gives us the best chance of victory!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 02.24.13 @ 9:33 pm

In the past, prior to last year, Pitt has played patsies for the first 3-4 games, played horribly, then plyed a good team, got punched in the mouth and started playing better after that. Next year they can get punchd in the mouth the first game, see what it’s like to play big-time football, and play good the rest of the year.

Comment by Caw Miller 02.24.13 @ 10:01 pm

Both Duquesne and Bobby Mo are 1-AA (or FCS, or whatever that level is called). Set up a game with one of them, you might even get some away fans.

Comment by Patrick 02.25.13 @ 12:46 am

Is the NCAA going to place Manhattan Kansas in southeast Ohio? Really, it can’t change the geography. WVUlgar is toast. It’s brand will continue to erode. Watch attendance in football this year. Overrated for years as a great fan-base, they’ve been treated with splendid teams, and have traveled well IN THE EAST. But two years ago Holgersen called out the fans for not showing up and he would have done the same last year except he was pre-occupied with a free falling team. WVU should have stayed in the Big East. They are great fit for how the league will look. Ha! Too bad for them. After all, they give away MBA’s for the right price.
Now we in the mens hoops world have 4 games left to accomplish the following: get zanna out of his funk or out of the starting 5: test Adams & Taylor together: decide on what combinations to play; and secure our identity as rebounding mfers!

Comment by SFPitt 02.25.13 @ 4:36 am

@PO’D PANTHER. Hope you didn’t put your house on St. Johns’s +6!!!!

I agree with Rev. George. Opening with FSU scares the crap out of me. We have had enough exposure getting shellacked on natinonal television from Wanny’s debut vs. ND to Thursay whoopings against UCONN.

Opening vs. Nova would have been great experience for Savage or Chapman and instead, they will be bapitzed by fire. I hope we can be competitive.
