Unknown Quantity, But Decent Offers

That’s the best way to describe the newest verbal to Pitt. There’s not a lot to say about James Julius, the cornerback out of Orlando, Florida who verbaled to Pitt this morning. Any real details about his commit are behind the recruiting site paywalls.

What details are known are that he is an unevaluated/nostar to 2-star recruit.

He is 5-10 to 5-11 at 165-175 pounds. He had offers from Iowa State, Cinci and Boise State. All programs that do well by finding (and developing) diamond-in-the-rough players.

Or there could be a more cynical view about his recruitment…

Julius is scheduled to take a visit for the January 11 weekend with his teammate Dominic Walker. A recruit who just happens to be a wide receiver. A WR with offers from Nebraska, WVU, Floida, FSU, Miami. Most sites list him as a 3-star recruit, except for ESPN.com which says 4-star.

The scouting report on Walker from ESPN.com (Insider subs):

Walker is an impressive outside wide receiver prospect who is capable of reaching top speed rapidly and threatening vertically on every snap. He is tall, rangy, has some natural bulk and a wide wingspan to create space and separation. He drives off the line with purpose and threatens a DB’s cushion right away. He is very smooth and athletic for a big wide receiver. He is quick and displays good change-of-direction skills. He is not afraid to go over the middle and is very effective on slants and underneath quick hitters…

And we all know Pitt is trying to make sure they bring in a couple more WRs to this class.

Looks like a good tactical move by Chryst. Hopefully we will reel in Walker also.

Comment by Floyd 12.23.12 @ 1:55 pm

Good move? What if the receiver does not
sign? The DB must have the potential
to help the team by the time he is a junior.

Comment by JR 12.23.12 @ 2:26 pm

Pitts first Florida recruit. Keep em comin. There’s some good talent down in that swamp.

Comment by TX Panther 12.23.12 @ 2:48 pm

Jeaster Weah a WR from wisconsin 6 foot 3
197 pounds will be in for a vist on 1/18/13.
and as far as julius we all ways need a CB
AND FROM ORLANDO FL. we are all ways bitiching
abought no players from FL well we got one i think it is a great start.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 2:50 pm

TX PANTHER i put a post on the dec 22 post four you abought a hour ago but am to lazy to re type it on here.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 2:56 pm

@JR
The DB has offers from Cincy, Iowa State and Boise State. He must not be chopped liver.

Comment by Floyd 12.23.12 @ 2:58 pm

Frankcan, you are absolutely right. Landing this CB is a great start in getting inroads into Florida. I hope this is only the beginning.

Comment by Floyd 12.23.12 @ 3:05 pm

As i said to tex panther on the dec 22 post
a hour ago.
i think the commits will start to come faster now
becuse we only have 6 more to give it will be take the commit or we move on to the nexy man.
of course we will save one for boyd.

i think we give 27 this year.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 3:17 pm

I think the next commit we get will be terris webb the WR from clairton.
becuse as you see they are bringing in 2 outher WR
And we only have 6 more to give if you snnoze
you lose.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 3:31 pm

Dion Lewis with a td!

Comment by panther94 12.23.12 @ 3:32 pm

Are we sure on the 27 recruits? I had seen 29 mentioned repeatedly on Rivals and Scout boards with with 4 coming of the 29 starting classes in January so as to be to be back-counted against last year’s class.

Comment by pitt1972 12.23.12 @ 3:52 pm

pitt1972 no but but the rules say 25
and it has been crazy cincin took 28 last year and we had 4 players droped from the team this year.
so maybe it is 29 the point is you are to have only 25 and i know there is some way around it
but i went with 27 wich is 2 more then the rule says you can have.

but even if it is 29 or 28 if they want to come they better get on board there are not that many more to give.

we are at 21 now and if boyd gets one that only leaves 6 or 7 so come on down or you dont get one

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 4:26 pm

Players that enroll in Jan count on last years class,If i am not mistaken that their will be 5.

Comment by FLPOLE 12.23.12 @ 6:26 pm

but we had 3 transfers they come off this years
or last it they come off last year that will be 2 insted of 5 does any one reall know how many we really have help.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 6:35 pm

ok lets see if we can work this out.
last year we signed 16 players
so that left 9 from lat year
so if 4 players come to school in jan count on last year that leaves 5 to put with this years total.

but we have 3 transfers so if you take them from the 5 you have 2 left
but we had 4 players leave so we are up to
31 so we have 31 for the year so far.

but he gave 3 to walk ons so we are left with 27 to give this year what have i missed?
so am i right or wrong i think we have 27.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 7:05 pm

no that should be 28 to give this year

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 7:07 pm

Frank, In any event, that’s a lot.

Comment by Justinian 12.23.12 @ 7:54 pm

This has to be a move to land the Dominic Walker kid. Which would be a really good get.

WE got 2 from Florida last year, same HS.
So we get two more this year !

Comment by Emel 12.23.12 @ 9:28 pm

Justinian but if we save one for boyd then we only have 6 more to give.

which is why i said the commits will come faster now.

if you have a offer from pitt every time you see
us get a commit you know that you have less
of a chance geting one as we go from 5 to 4
if you dont have a better offer.

you get worryed and so you committ so they will come quicker now most likely one or two a week
after x mas.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.12 @ 9:58 pm

I think if you believe in a kid and you think he can make an impact, then you have to after him. I wouldn’t hold more that 1 or 2 spots open. They need guys who can contribute. If you want to keep 1 spot open for Boyd, or some other un-named player, who might change his mind, that’s ok, but there is a certain amount of risk involved. I happen to think Boyd is worth the risk.

Comment by Justinian 12.23.12 @ 10:18 pm

Chryst is showing that he is systematic, methodical… a cool leader who is working a game plan. From coaches he is bringing in to players.

Oh, and he has proven to be a very good coach from very good programs…

And that is exactly what we need at Pitt if we want a transformational coach who can get this program out of its multiple decade funk of mediocrity and disappointment and make it a nationally relevant football team again.

Comment by PittScript 12.23.12 @ 10:54 pm

In case no one has noticed, Chryst is a silent communicator sometimes. During the hand wringing that followed the Wisconsin job opening, he issued one statement and spoke to zero reporters.
After Foster went with Alabama, he said nothing and signed a kid from THE football capital of the USA, the state of Florida.
“We’ll see” was his reponse to the question of whether Cam Saddler would play in the bowl game after a suspension that has remained conspicuous by the silence that surrunds it.
I’m not suggesting that this means a NC within 4 years, but he sure as hell doesn’t mope about things does he?
That alone sets him apart from most.
He is a pretty cool customer.

Comment by sfpitt 12.24.12 @ 8:57 am

Cool customer indeed! One thing to remember is that scholarships have to be renewed every yr. Simply because you have one now doesn’t mean you will next fall. Especially if you’re a walk on, those are awarded if available. Notice the wr from Scranton got his in SEP after the school yr had started!

Comment by ec2it 12.24.12 @ 9:17 am

In addtion to those named above, James Julius also had an official offer from Boston College.

He’s got decent speed and cover skills. Really shines in his aggression in coming up to make a play against the run.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.24.12 @ 9:30 am

The biggest pickup Chryst will make by signing day will the person he chooses as Defensive Coordinator.

That guy will have a bigger immmediate impact on the team than any one single recruit.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.24.12 @ 9:32 am

Frankcan and Emel, About the signing of James Julius and his upcoming Pitt visit with Dominic Walker. You have to go after Walker, particularily after losing Foster. I think you have to be aggressive about building your recruiting class. You can’t bank on being able to get Tyler Boyd. If you can, you hold open a spot or two, but to do any more than that, you risk losing other players who can help you. As more players commit, there will be fewer oppenings and the verbal commitments will begin to accelerate. So if you think you have a legitimate shot a signing a kid, and you believe he’s worth the risk, then you can keep a spot open. At this point, I hope they can get Walker.

Comment by Justinian 12.24.12 @ 9:38 am

By the way, who’s working Florida for Chryst?

They got Julius and look like they could very well land Kemp.

Not exactly five stars, but a good start to establishing a recruiting inroad through Florida.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.24.12 @ 9:39 am

In earlier post I thought that Chryst knows what he wants and needs and if something changes he moves on.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Comment by frank MD 12.24.12 @ 9:54 am

Good pickup. Two star florida speed and it builds the pipeline.

Comment by AtlantaPanther 12.24.12 @ 10:20 am

Frank MD, That’s exactly what you have to do. You can’t worry about who you didn’t get. You move on to the next play, or in this case, the next player.

Hey guys, I’ve enjoyed talking to all of you on the blog. Best wishes and have a Merry Christmas, or a nice holiday season, as the case may be, and a happy New Year.

Comment by Justinian 12.24.12 @ 10:20 am

Merry Christmas guys!

Comment by sfpitt 12.24.12 @ 11:22 am

Just to clear up what may be some confusion between the 25 and 85 rules: As i understand it transfers from other 4 year schools don’t count against the 25 per year rule. They do count against the maximum 85 ships on the team rule.

So, as far as recruits go as long as you don’t go over the 25 in a single class rule (with January enrollees available to be counted against the previous class year’s 25 limit to the extent there is room in that class) you can bring in as many recruits as you want. That is, so long as three conditions are met–

1. The previous year’s class + January enrollees is 25 or under.

2. The current class of summer/fall enrollees does not exceed 25

3. The total number of players on ship on the overall roster does not exceed 85 as of the start of next fall’s school semester.

Comment by pitt1972 12.24.12 @ 11:54 am

dominic walker had pitt in his top 3 with nebraska and tennessee before huxtable left. since then pitt has not talked to him really but they are clearly picking it back up since he is officially visiting with james julius.

james julius is a very good pickup not only because he is a good prospect or the overall florida connection, but also with the connection to his very own school. obviously they have walker, but apparently julius has a sophomore brother who is an absolute stud and evans high school is a powerhouse with recruits.

also, rumors that corey davis is transferring are surfacing. that allows pitt to take 26 kids now.

Comment by pk 12.24.12 @ 11:59 am

Merry Christmas to all.

Comment by pitt1972 12.24.12 @ 12:07 pm

pitt 1972 do one thing tell us how many we can give out this year.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.24.12 @ 12:15 pm

pk that is bad news we are short on RB.
if he goes we only have 3 that is bad.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.24.12 @ 12:17 pm

Frank, i think with shell, bennett, and crockett we are ok but it does make kemp more important

Comment by Pk 12.24.12 @ 12:36 pm

Bennett will be a junior and Shell a sophomore so barring injury, an upper classman wouldn’t figure to get much playing time. With freshmen coming in, they could redshirt and have their eligibility preserved while they learn the sytem and get adjusted to college, along with the opportunity to play later.

Comment by Justinian 12.24.12 @ 12:46 pm

I read somewhere that Dominic Walker had verbally committed to Vanderbilt during the summer. Does anybody know, has he uncommitted from that verbal?

BTW, I viewed the actual video, for the first time of Robert Foster’s recruit decision video. Is it just me or does this kid look like he is less than enthusiastic about his committment to Alabama? In the video, after Foster utters that he will play for Alabama it looks like his Father is consoling him more than congratulating him. This kid looks very distraught in his decision in that video. Very strange.

Merry Christmas to all of my Panther friends on the Blather. Lets all hope for the start of a Happy New Year with a sound victory over Old Miss.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.24.12 @ 1:26 pm

Dr. Tom, that too was my initial reaction that I posted. He is clearly conflicted. What doesn’t make sense is that he and his mother say that they owe everything to Central, yet they are leaving the ones they claim to love and be responsible for Robert’s success. Why separate the give back to those that love you? They can’t commute to Alabama to support him, but they can drive to Oakland! Just not consistent. LEt’s support him and let him understand how we treat our own.

Unless you have experienced being a northener, trying to fit in with a bunch of southerner’s, you just don’t understand. They are still fighting the war down there on several fronts. It will become obvious soon enough to the Foster’s. The southern folks should be ecstatic. The north wins the war and is dumb enough to stay …..in the north! LOL!!

Merry Christmas everybody. May all of your expectations for the coming year, be exceeded. My wish is great happiness and health to you all and to your families.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 12.24.12 @ 1:48 pm

Dr. Tom, i noticed his hesitation as well. His mom also looked shocked by the decision. Apparently he has also told reporters that pitt was the best fit for him even though he chose alabama. Tell me how that makes sense… i really dont have inside info but the way he went about his presser and how he flip flopped just hours beforehand makes me think that his recruitment is not over.

also, yes he decommitted from vanderbilt. It seems as though nebraska is his leader and his announcement is before his scheduled pitt visit but if julius can get him on pitts campus, there is a chance because he has said as recently as the past few days that he has interest in pitt

Comment by pk 12.24.12 @ 1:50 pm

If true that Davis is transferring, it’s probably a win-win.

Davis not a good fit for a power running game. Needs space to showcase the decent speed he has.

On the other side, being the man with a plan that he is, no doubt Chryst has done the math and knows how many available scholarships he needs for the kids he expects to commit.

Likely, Davis will not be the last to leave.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.24.12 @ 1:51 pm

Good observations this morning from everyone. Thank you for the insights.

The Foster video really struck me as well when you actually watch it… good points that this story is not over.

Hey, just found this article out of Florida on Julius. Good insights on him… seems like a good player.

Also some insight on Walker as “heavily” leaning towards Nebraska… but he is visiting Pitt with his teammate so….

Comment by PittScript 12.24.12 @ 2:17 pm

Oh… and Julius has a brother who is a sophomore… a 6’0″ WR… up and comer! Perhaps 1 recruit will bring in 3 total…?

Comment by PittScript 12.24.12 @ 2:19 pm

I found the whole Foster thing, rather bizare. He had been spoken of ,as being extremely close to his family and wanting to stay close to them. He also stated that he loved the people at Central Valley and wanted his college experience to similar. I guess he looking for approval from his father. He just sounds rather immature to me. I just think the Panthers need to go after other good wide recievers like Walker or Boyd and get someone who is not conflicted about coming to Pitt.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL

E2C – PITT has had a policy for as long as I can remember that once a HS player has been given a scholarship PITT then honors and renews that scholarship for a full four years unless the player does something to warrant dismissal (disciplinary or academic).

That said, PITT HCs will talk to 5th year SRs and tell them their scholarship is up if they feel that player won’t contribute much. Thus “moving on with life’s work” and we’ll see that with a few players over the offseason.

Also, our HCs will help a player who isn’t getting or going to get playing time a transfer to another school where he’d be a better fit. DW was very good with that.

But PITT does not yank scholarships just to open up roster spots / scholarships as other schools do.

If Chryst does specifically that it would be a big departure from the past and personally disappointing to me.

Comment by Reed 12.26.12 @ 8:36 am

Reed,

Chryst does not impress me as someone who would do anything but what he truly thought was best for the kid and the team.

His moniker is leaving the final decision to the player whether he be a high school recruit or a current member of the team.

That’s going to go a long way to establishing Pitt as a place where kids want to play.

Comment by PittofDreams 12.26.12 @ 9:00 am

E2C–Reed is spot on based on everything I have ever heard about Pitt policy over the years. As far as 5th year seniors being let go–they have ample time to graduate and get a degree–including their last Pitt summer, if need be, to get those last class or two or three in if they haven’t already graduated. No one making reasonable academic progress gets run off without a degree.
