Football Links: 12/21

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 8:07 am

Okay, just some link clearance.

Anyone know the status of Cam Saddler at this point? He was suspended for the final game (didn’t even travel with the team), and whatever it was, it pissed off Coach Chryst enough that he still hasn’t said anything about his status for the BBVA Bowl.

Speaking of the BBVA Bowl, they will never want anyone but Ole Miss coming back at this rate.

Ole Miss has sold 21,470 tickets for the BBVA Compass Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 5 in Birmingham. That’s believed to be the most in the SEC.

“It’s the first time that has ever happened with these type of ticket sales,” BBVA Compass Bowl executive director Mark Meadows said. “We’ve had some good ticket sales here, when South Carolina was here (in 2010). But this, it’s kinda unprecedented.”

What’s happening is a confluence of factors — an unexpected bowl trip after two dismal seasons, winning the Egg Bowl, and a bowl game that happens to sit in the middle of Ole Miss’ alumni network.

So, at least the stands won’t look deserted. One of the things about the SEC (at least before adding Mizzou and Texas A&M) is the geographic compactness that makes road trips a lot more viable. The trip to Birmingham from Oxford is only 3 hours. And so this is an easy drive from most places. It’s a Saturday game. Come in that morning. Go right back if you want.

Just be careful Ole Miss. Birmingham has a way of not letting go for a while.

T.J. Clemmings hasn’t quite lived up to expectations as a stud defensive end. Now he’s giving offensive tackle a try.

“Coach Chryst, he asked me if it was something I wanted to do. I didn’t have to, he said it was no big deal. But I went home, thought about it. I thought I’d be pretty good at it, so let’s give it a try,” Clemmings said. “The team needed some help on the offensive side anyways, so I’ll try and help the guys out.”

Clemmings said he played some offensive line in high school, but obviously none at this level. He was listed as a 4* defensive end coming into Pitt, so the raw talent is there. Clemmings has started out at right tackle, at least for now as he adjusts to the new position. So far, though, it sounds like the adjustment is going well. So well, in fact, that Clemmings says he’s likely to stick with the new position moving forward into next season.

“It feels a little more natural,” Clemmings said. “First time I went out there, it didn’t feel crazy to me, like ‘Oh, I can’t do this, this is too much.’ I actually felt like I had done it before, but I never have.”

Clemmings is 6-foot-6, and said he currently weighs 285 pounds. He’ll have to bulk up in the offseason, and would like to play the position at around 300 pounds. With his frame, though, he certainly has room to add on some more good weight.

It seems like a good move for Pitt and Clemmings. He appeared to lack a spark at DE. Never quite seemed to have the energy there. And adding depth on the O-line is a no-brainer at this point.

Great breakdown by FootballOutsiders on Ray Graham’s pro potential/where he gets drafted. Looks at the change in his running, and ability to cut after the injury. They see him as going somewhere between rounds 3 to 5.

It’s less than a two hour drive from Atlanta; I’ll be there though in the minority. HTP!

Ray Graham could be the sleeper type of back the Steelers need and could get in the early-mid rounds. He would compliment Dwyer or Redman and be a good check-down threat for Ben.

Plus I would just like to see the kid play a few more years in Pittsburgh!

(Last time, Chas, I promise)

I’m going to the game, the alumni (412) 872-5279 is having a tailgate in the fan zone area.

I’m sure Pitt will bring 1000 fans so we will be outnumbered 20 to 1

Last year Ray Graham was amazing. After ACL surgery, I’m amazed how well he’s been able to play this year. I always thought fully recovering from ACL surgery took two years. The fact that is back and playing as well as he has, in itself is a pretty good story. I hope that, for his sake, he continues to improve and that we see the explosive burst, off the cut, as good as it ever was. Go Ray …………and Hail to Pitt!

That Ole Miss bet is looking good right now. I figured that if Pitt was going to have to go to Birmingham again, I’d at least make some money with a disappointing loss.

I will be there along with 5 family members. Hope that we can muster up at least 10-15K spectators for PITT
