No MAC In 2013

The non-con football schedule is complete. Pitt was already scheduled to play Villanova, ND and at Navy. A MAC or some other 1-A from the lower tier was expected. Turns out it isn’t a totally horrible opponent.  The fourth non-con is another home game against the Lobos of New Mexico.

That means a seven-game home schedule in the first year of ACC play. There was already going to be excitement about that first year. With only one 1-AA team. No MAC (or Sun Belt) opponents. Notre Dame at home. Ticket sales for the 2013 season should be strong.

Not totally horrible opponent, but totally winnable game. Also you should check out their recruiting class. And then never complain about Paul Chryst’s recruiting again.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.20.12 @ 1:21 pm

When you factor in Pitt always being dicked over with 12 noon kickoffs, that should really help against UNM, who will have their body clocks set at 10 am . . . gotta love those cross-country trips for western teams!

And I am fully aware that did not work so well against Utah . . . but there were a whole host of other problems that game!

Comment by TartanPanther 12.20.12 @ 1:28 pm

what, dont we want to play BGSU or Y’Town on opening day?

Comment by HLandPitt 12.20.12 @ 1:33 pm

It would be sweet to pay Notre Dame back for that phantom interference call on 4th down. The Panthers got homered in South Bend, and it would be nice to return the favor at Heinz Field.

Comment by Justinian 12.20.12 @ 1:48 pm

What makes you think there would be home cooking for Pitt at Heinz.

Comment by JP 12.20.12 @ 2:11 pm

Is this team coached by former Pitt
assistant and Western Pa guy Bob Davies?

If so he probably wants to do some local
recruiting.

Comment by JR 12.20.12 @ 2:22 pm

great games 2013 i cant wait next year we are
9 and 3 bank on it.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.12 @ 2:25 pm

Wow Frankcan 9 and 3 in Pitt’s first year in the ACC. Not that i disagree with you, but I didn’t expect such optimism from you. Its refreshing to see the positivity that is coming from a large part of the fan base.

Comment by Floyd 12.20.12 @ 2:55 pm

FLOYD at the start of last year i thought we would be 10 and 2 that was why i was so down last year.
becuse i had high hopes and saw them dashed.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.12 @ 3:03 pm

Love it. Said this several times over the past years, if we have to play some of these teams, get some new teams, new names, new colors instead of Ohio and Kent etc. etc..

Am I that much of a simpleton?? Yes, yes I am.

I will look forward to game day much more with a New Mexico than Toledo or Bowling Green.

That’s just me. A pleasant suprise.

Comment by Dan 12.20.12 @ 3:05 pm

Dan me to love the new teams we play it will be great fun.

when anthony covington decommited from pitt
it must have been his grades becuse he just
commited to appalachian state no one
decommits from pitt and 10 outhet big time schools
for appalachian.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.12 @ 3:16 pm

FYI, Cincy doing a 70-100 million renovation and update to Nippert Stadium.

Makin’ pretty for an invite somewhere, someday.

Comment by Dan 12.20.12 @ 3:19 pm

Dan, do you see any conference other than the Big XII inviting Cincy? They seem to be in a similar situation to UConn in that UConn’s only viable suitor appears to be the ACC. I feel bad for both of these schools though, and hope they land in one of the big conferences someday.

Comment by Floyd 12.20.12 @ 3:24 pm

So what is the full schedule for next year? Would someone mind posting it?

Comment by Jeff 12.20.12 @ 3:29 pm

if memory serves, the last time we opened with Nova, it was at Pitt Stadium and they had an unkmown by the name of Brian Westbrook which led them scoring something like 32 or 35 pts. Believe Pitt scored 48 or 49.

I may not remember the score but I do remember Westbrook putting on a show.

Comment by wbb 12.20.12 @ 3:34 pm

FRANKCAN, probably, hoping if the Big 12 ever makes a move, they will be added as WVU’s sidekick.

@Jeff. I don’t think the conference schedule is out yet.

Allthough, someone on here posted a matrix he had of the ACC scheduling system, and posted to the best of his knowledge what our schedule would look like a couple of months ago. Can’t remember who or what post.

I think the ACC posts it after their winter meetings in Jan. sometime.

Comment by Dan 12.20.12 @ 3:42 pm

info for you tex panther has given us a new name
for pitt DC KERRY COOKS CO dc at ND
coached at wisconsin from 2006 till 2009
good job tex panther,

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.12 @ 3:50 pm

Cooks from nd? Would be a good one. I think he is a monster recruiter or is that Alford rb coach. Cooks would be nice but nd will pay to have him stay.

Comment by TX Panther 12.20.12 @ 4:20 pm

Okay, thanks Dan. That makes sense.

Comment by Jeff 12.20.12 @ 5:20 pm

jeff we know who we play but we dont know dates
just look up what div we are in at the ACC then look at thegames that were posted on this post and you have the teams that we play.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.12 @ 5:30 pm

OK lets run thru are list for DC and with no
help from the people that should know these names come only from fellow blather posters.
1 the new one kerry cook DC at ND coached at
wisconsin.
2 tood orlando played at wisconsin was a DC
at u conn.
3 tom bradley was DC at penn state
4 jim tomsula DL coach at san fran
5 d austin DC at florida for one year

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.12 @ 5:44 pm

On the schedule for September 14th …

Comment by Hoopzebra 12.20.12 @ 6:16 pm

Actually, we almost know who we play.

Villanova
New Mexico
Notre Dame
Navy
North Carolina
Miami
Duke
Georgia Tech
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Syracuse

and one of Clem, FSU, WF, NC St., BC, Mary.

Actually Jeff, if I remember his matrix, I think NC ST may be next years other division game. I could very well be wrong.

That, is one hell of a schedule!!!!!!!

p.s. first 4 are OOC. Next 6 div games. Syracuse is our crossover div rival. Then one of the other 6 teams from the other division, rotating that annually.

Comment by Dan 12.20.12 @ 7:50 pm

actually Chas, I consider any team that finishes 1 and 7 in the MWC to be pretty bad, and certainly worse than the avearge MAC team

Comment by wbb 12.20.12 @ 8:11 pm

Dates that are set ..or at least weekend they’ll play..
8/31 Villanova ..9/14 New Mexico ..10/26 AT Navy…11/9 Notre Dame

Does anyone know what ACC we’ll start with at home..would be a heck of a home schedule if both VT and Miami came to Heinz Field next year.

Comment by milobloom 12.20.12 @ 8:24 pm

Interesting debate going on here about an on campus stadium for Pitt:

Comment by Jackagain 12.20.12 @ 8:47 pm

Why not Cincy to the ACC eventually? Lets face it, they’ve been the most consistently winning team in the BE the past 5-6 yrs. and their hoops is on the rise. Also another TV market (sure OSU splits Cincy the way Ped St. splits Pgh, so what?). I’d rather have them than UConn.

Even if New Mexico blows, agree its nice to see a new team rather than a MAC. No knock on the MAC, just nice to branch out. I had initially seen Fla St as the wildcard crossover next year, not sure if any validity to that. Pretty excited for next year’s schedule, especially after enduring this year’s.

Comment by Iron Duke 12.20.12 @ 8:49 pm

Frankly I don’t ever want to see Cincy or UConn again…

Comment by Jackagain 12.20.12 @ 9:04 pm

Here’s the ACC schedule as predicted last summer .. Home – Virginia [Div]; North Carolina [Div]; Miami [Div] .. Away – Georgia Tech [Div]; Duke [Div]; Virginia Tech[Div]; Syracuse [Rival] .. before the ACC went back to an 8-game conference schedule the crossover games were at Wake Forest and home to Florida State .. to balance the schedule, Pitt should keep FSU at home …

Comment by Hoopzebra 12.20.12 @ 9:30 pm

Found this on a dapper dan site a pedro favre
lists who he thinks the new pitt DC will be
there are 3 on his list.
1 kerry cooks i am starting to find that on a lot of outher places a ND blog for one .
2 teryl austin
3 tom bradley
i dont know who this pedro fave is but it was
something to do with dapper dan so i posted it.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.12 @ 9:30 pm

Jack again, I find that article depressing because I agree with it and don’t think it will happen any time soon.

Comment by panther94 12.20.12 @ 9:47 pm

There would be no reason to delay announcing either Orlando or Bradley but there would be for Cooks or Austin.

Comment by wbb 12.20.12 @ 9:58 pm

Thanks, Dan. Indeed, that is a much more attractive schedule than what we’re used to seeing in the watered down Big East. Hopefully, that’ll help put some fannies in the seats next fall.

Don’t forget that tomorrow (FRIDAY) Robert Foster makes his selection.

Let’s hope he takes his talents to Oakland/Southside/North Shore

I don’t like the crossover game with an 8-game conference schedule. Would rather just have two rotating games.

Comment by Chris 12.20.12 @ 11:38 pm

Agreed Chris, but that’s clearly to keep the nc schools happy and I don’t see it going away unless there’s a realignment of divisions.

Comment by panther94 12.20.12 @ 11:42 pm

Also agree Chris. Was hoping it would be Maryland instead of Syracuse. Doesn’t really matter now that Maryland will be going soon.

No football rivalry with Syracuse, so, ya, I would just rather play a rotating 2 of the 7.

Remember though, we will play another one of those 7 in the championship game!!!

I could go the rest of my Pitt football watching career with never seeing a MAC team again.

Bring on Cal St. San Luis Obispo!!!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 12.21.12 @ 2:51 am

I read the Bleacher Report article re:on campus facility. For the most part, it merely cites reasons why having an on campus stadium is attractive. Ok, dog bites man.
But it does make some good points. 1. Steelers won’t play at Heinz 4-ever.2. Other places suffer from parking and shuttle fans.
Here is my take.
If done it must be part of a larger project to include housing, commercial etc. Pitt’s small campus size means you have to master plan and expand the campus size. The hill district is the nearest option to existing facilities so prepare for political challenges by giving that residential area (only real grid of streets in Pgh) what it needs in terms of shopping and infrastructure…not the Penguins sitting around waiting.
The site must include a hotel.
The site must replace decay.
Students will have to walk to games.
It should be away from medical facilities to ensure safety for patients, family etc
South Oakland would work, but it will obviously require purchases.
In case no one has noticed, tailgating is being discouraged in lieu of property development.
At Ohio State (hold groans), alcohol is banned in parking lots. But their temperance extends only so far, as it is sold at an indoor tailgate at the Blackwell, an OSU property next to the stadium and at the Alumni facility.
If this is going to happen, then it must be part if a real master plan, not the promises (us yet totally unfulfilled in the Lower Hill by the penguins) of what might some day be. None of this if you build it they will come.
How about dorm rooms in the stadium as sort of a scholarship? Been done at other places!

Doubleheader coming up on 1/5/13:

The NJ Pitt Alumni Club is offering tickets for the basketball game against Rutgers in Piscataway which starts at 11:00 a.m. We purchased tickets at a group discount rate and are selling them at their face value of $25 per ticket. First come, first-served. All event proceeds benefit the Club’s endowed scholarship fund.

PLus, we have reserved the RU Zone, a spacious lounge area on the first floor of the Rutgers Livingston Student Center for the 1 pm bowl game watch and party. This venue is a 5 minute walk from the basketball arena. Big screen TVs, a buffet and beer/wine will be on hand.

Tickets are going fast. Here’s the order form:

Well the world didn’t end. That means Foster will be saying H2P! Happy birthday Tino.

Comment by TX Panther 12.21.12 @ 6:37 am

I always liked the idea of a stadium in Panther Hollow. Students could enter from the top. Plenty of cheap space for Parking in Hazelwood, with easy shuttle access. A new ramp from the parkway would be easy. Multi use facilities would be right on campus.

Facilities could be shared with CMU, great concert venue, tailgaiting in lower lots or Schenley Park. Easy access to Oakland or Southside establishments.

Architectural design in a natural bowl could be spectacular and add to campus and community life.

Does that mean I’m still married to my wife or can I expect a super model to be making me dinner this evening?

Comment by TX Panther 12.21.12 @ 11:37 am

Here’s where the stadium should be. Some won’t like but…

Overtop of Mazeroski Field (preserving the Outfield Wall. Frick Fine Arts may need some adjusting or moved. U-shaped stadium with the opening pointing directly at the Cathedral.

Schenley Fountain incorporated into the open field side. Playing field dropped about 25′ below Schenley Drive.

Boundary Road Parking lot removed and Boundary run along R/R. S. Bouquet extended down to Boundary St. Joncaire, Isis and Yarrow property purchased by Pitt and demolished for back end of stadium leaving Post Office, but taking everything south of it. Big Script Pitt on southeast wall facing Schenley Park and Schenley Drive (Panther Hollow Bridge).

Dropping the field 25′ provides fill for the southwest portion of the stadium area and allows for the creation of a tunnel entrance on the north side of the stadium for the band to enter for pre-game (and rock the underside of the seats) similar to Pitt Stadium.

If you look at the footprint (Google map) of the area, and slide over and look at the footprint of Heinz Field, you’ll see it will fit.

(I’m just an old Pitt engineer so I know nuttin” 🙂 )

Was this ‘Nova game set anticipating that they would be I-A next season, thus saving the Big East? Hahaha

Comment by Chuck Morris 12.21.12 @ 1:47 pm

@TX Panther..

You’re just a little off, actually the super model is expecting YOU to be cooking her dinner. (hope she is also your wife!)

Comment by CompLit 12.21.12 @ 1:50 pm

@complit
Hey, I like it. Now, if you aren’t too possessive, give us a schematic design, distribute it here first, get ground support and we can get it done just like Sophie did.
BUT, one bit of advice. Aim high on the LEED chart: that will soothe political wounds and focus in the water flow.

Comment by SFPitt 12.22.12 @ 4:14 am

@SFPitt… You’re making me think. It hurts ! Be looking for something posted here in a few days or weeks.. One thing I did investigate was that the footprint of Pitt Stadium (617′ x 791′) easily fits on the land, and that doesn’t account for shaving the end as a horseshoe with the Mary Schenley Fountain at the gate !
