Here’s something to note. Jerry McCullough, who came to Pitt during the downside of the Paul Evans era, is now coaching high school prep basketball in Massachusetts. He seems to be making an impact.
MacDuffie may not have that same pedigree, but second-year coach Jerry McCullough believes the Mustangs can compete now for Class AA hardware.
“I do — that’s why we play,” McCullough said with a chuckle. “Realistically, it’s going to be very challenging for us to do that. We want to improve and grow with the school.”
McCullough, who played under Paul Evans at the University of Pittsburgh before a professional career in the U.S. and Europe, brought the Granby school to the Class D championship game in his first season.
MacDuffie entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed and was unbeaten against Class D opponents before falling to Hoosac in the final.
Now the Mustangs are making the jump from NEPSAC’s lowest division to its second highest. Only Class AAA is higher, with schools like Brewster Academy, New Hampton Prep, Northfield Mt. Hermon and St. Thomas More, programs that churn out Division I recruits on a yearly basis.
McCullough was playing in Italy, as recently as 2009 (he’s even got a small entry on the Italian Wikipedia). He seems to have made a quick adjustment from the end of his playing career.
McCullough has had an influx of potential Division I level players who want to play for him, which necessitated the jump in divisions. We may be reading more about his program and his players in the coming months or years.
I used to play pick up games at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse and he was there rehabbing and working out by himself one time and we shot threes together for a long time. Nice guy and #5 was always my number too.
Glad to hear he is having success.
Anyway, support to a former Panther and good luck!
McCullough and Mobley ran at least two alley oops per game. Pretty much the highlight of that era.
But I agree, I was hoping to see something else this morning.
Maybe even something about basketball… you know… since we are playing the #5 team in the country tonight.
Very entertaining game. Hey didn’t PITT beat Butler in the CIB thing last year at Butler.
Nice to see Ice doing well. He was very entertaining as well.
Got my kids out of school early today so we could be at Grandma’s house in time for tipoff.
Moore and Zanna will combine for 30 points and 10 rbs. Expect Adams to bounce back too, with 10 and 12.
Pitt 78, Michigan 74 and Boubabcar 7 Sierra Nevada’s.
but today i have been on some penn state sites one as recent as nov 10 and i will say this there fans are down on the big 10 dont think that means any thing but it does not seam as far fetched to day as it did yesterday.
I like all parts of that score.
I started drinking again with all the conf. realignment talk again, lol Deciding between Bakers Bourbon (107) or 100 proof Vodka.
The one you can drink over the rocks, the other is better with a mixer. And would require me leaving the domain to fetch it. We shall see.
Delany appeared to characterize the conference’s football woes as a short-term concern, as something that could be attributed to an influx of new coaches and the consequences of immoral behavior at Penn State and Ohio State. He made no real acknowledgement of the long-term statistics, of the Big Ten’s 34-52 bowl record since 2000, of the fact that the Big Ten has won 37 percent of its nonconference games against nationally ranked teams since Ohio State won the national championship in 2002. The top of the conference is largely shaky, and the bottom has never been worse: I imagine Purdue and Minnesota and Illinois would struggle to finish .500 in the MAC.
The point with trying to solidify a conference is you don’t add 2nd rate schools. imo That is what the BigLeast has been doing, how’s that working out for them.
Swofford just landed a whale (even if it’s not been totally reeled in yet) in Notre Dame. Obviously this really worked on Swoffords old classmate at North Carolina psyche, that being Delaney as he is one of these Master of the World types. If you read the above article, you’ll get the idea as Delaney at Age 64 just climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. He was not going to let Swofford outdo him. So he went after one of Swofford’s chess pieces, even though it was a pawn, lol.
It’s still a piece on the board.
So I would suggest, why replace a pawn with another pawn, go after a Queen, Bishop or Rook.
That’s how you win in chess.
but i would be glad to be wrong
vodka go get it it is a good time of year to drink orange juice vitiam c and all to fight colds
was on the two big Texas sites, Orangebloods and burntOrange. This from Orangebloods:
Keep your ears open for rumblings out of the SEC about a push that could include Alabama with support from Texas A&M and Missouri to get Florida and Georgia to relent on their opposition to adding Florida State and Georgia Tech.
Louisville has been ringing the Big 12’s doorbell since realignment started, but now could be a candidate to replace Maryland in the ACC. The Big 12 has done studies that show schools such as Louisville and Cincinnati don’t move the meter enough in terms of television, so there is no interest in those additions at this time.
The ACC outfoxed the Big 12 to get Notre Dame. Could the SEC outfox the Big 12 to get Florida State and Georgia Tech?
Would the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets be open to such moves?
The fact that we are even asking these questions tells you that realignment is back and everyone better be on their toes.
Q: You often mention it, but as a Clevelander I have a question that I can’t figure out: WHY does God hate Cleveland? What did we do to deserve SIX DECADES of nightmarish failure across all major sports? Are we simply unlucky, or is God just a dick?
—Daniel, Cleveland
SG: I guess the silver lining is that we’ve narrowed it down to those two choices, right?
If Dixon uses 9-10 player rotation and no player gets over 30minutes…
Pitt wins…
If Woodall shoots more than 10shots.. Pitt loses.
You’re in for a long season Joe D if you don’t jump on the Woodall bandwagon – He’s Dixon go to guy this year and the one who he is running the offense through … and it’s not going to change anytime soon.
Pauly P new handle of Makers Mark cracked and drinking starts at 7PM/
in that era
us before they took wvu.
the sec has us in there top 6 schools if they expand. and the acc took us.
but the big ten never cared abought us did not want us.
Brandin Knight shot 30% from three his senior year and his jersey is retired. There’s more to being a great point guard than shooting percentage.
That is a classic! Hey, alcohol stays in the system a long time. My memory is playing tricks on me so thanks for the prelude tale. I had never seen that before in a game and I’ve not seen it happen since.
Yea I saw that. The main SEC blog had PITT listed as a possible target which would make sense for the SEC, since it would get them into a brand new area and Pittsburgh is in the Top 25 for TV markets.
If we truly are serious about football and still consider ourselves a football school (which I doubt considering the moves that have and haven’t be made by Pitt’s admin), PITT should put a feeler out to the SEC, as besides offering a brand new market for them, they get a good academic school, which is sorely needed with only Vanderbilt & Florida and possibly Georgia considered good academic schools. Don’t know maybe Texas A&M is too. Mizzou isn’t bad.
But put a feeler out, who knows, if it is going to 4 16 team conferences, as long as Texas stays in the Big 12, that is going to be more viable as one of the 4 than the ACC.
It could work for PITT and the SEC is launching their own network and like I said if it’s going to Four 16 school conf’s, we need to get a spot now. Not later !
And good luck to Jerry. Maybe he can guide a recruit or two our way…
