It’s a cute story. And really the Con had nothing to lose by submitting a bid.
Consol Energy Center has put in a bid to play host to the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball tournament, a Penguins official confirmed tonight.
…
The ACC accepts bids for a six-year period and decides which cities will play host to the event in each of those years. The ACC rotates the tournament to different cities. Atlanta played host to the event last year. Washington, D.C., Tampa and Charlotte have played host to the event as well.
Consol Energy Center and Visit Pittsburgh worked together on the bid. Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said the university was not directly involved in the process, but the Panthers encouraged the Penguins to put in the bid.
To clarify, the Con submitted a bid to host at some point between 2016 and 2021. The bid was not just submitted yesterday, but last month.
The ACC Tournament has never been north of the Mason-Dixon Line. The ACC doesn’t actually release the names of the cities and venues that submit bids. Greensboro, naturally has submitted bids once more. The only other known bidders at this point include Charlotte and Atlanta.
Since the Big East has locked back in with MSG, they won’t be doing it. And for this stretch, the Brooklyn Nets new place is going to have the A-10, I believe. Really NYC is the only place I can envision the ACC Tournament taking place in the North. I don’t see the ACC offices and most of the schools wanting to take it to Pittsburgh or Boston for that matter. They want a location that more than one fan base can easily reach.
The Verizon Center in Washington D.C. still makes the most sense to me. The location. The population base and number of alums from all the schools in the area is significant. Hopefully they put in a bid.
shot at it?
forgot to go to outhe site
The only ones that wouldn’t make it ‘easily’ (and unfortunately are the ACC’s answer to Providence) and the ones that matter are Dook and UNC.
Vegas has it at 10.5 I believe.
If the final score is 24-14 or 24-17 and Pitt beats the spread is that a moral victory against such a highly ranked team?
I say it is if the game is close down to the wire. Then again, it means Tino remains the starter.
Challingsworth, a senior who committed to Pitt, is one of them. After Brumbaugh found Conner Beck for a 23-yard touchdown to open the scoring, Challingsworth broke free from a defender and reeled in an 11-yard score to put the Lions ahead, 14-0, late in the first quarter.
“We played with them early on, but with their speed and their quick-strike ability, them getting up on us by 14 so quickly was big,” said Steel Valley coach Rod Steele.
Brumbaugh connected with Challingsworth again late in the first half for a 30-yard touchdown.
“My first thought was I overthrew him,” Brumbaugh said. “But it’s hard to overthrow a guy with 4.3 speed.”
It’s also hard to fathom how good Brumbaugh may become.
“It’s amazing how good he is, and he’s only a sophomore,” Challingsworth said. “By the time he’s a senior, I think he’ll be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.”

2 thoughts: 1) while I’m not sure Pitt commit (2-star rating) Challingsworth has 4.3 speed, he apparently is very fast
2) Brumbaugh from South Fayette is 6’3, only a soph, and already has 11 TDs …. an area recruit that I’m sure will be on Chryst’s radar
If they agree, that they want to go north, then Pittsburgh would be one of their top choices.
Make no mistake, NYC is the capitol of the world, but if venues are taken up, and they want to go north, Pittsburgh’s reputation as a city, a business location, and destination for conventions etc. etc. is just getting bigger and bigger every year.
Nope, I’m not a homer. Can just see it in business, education, everything.
Also, Swofford, and another A.D. or assistant A.D. both made comments to the effect, that “the ACC is now, the Eastern U.S. collegiate athletic league”.
So, who knows? I would love to see it here, or in NYC, but, to show how much of a homer, I’m not, I’m actually looking forward to going to it in Greensboro.
Carolina, definitely one of the college hoops meccas, can’t way to go down to Tobacco Road!!!!
Why don’t Yinz guys throw in some Pghese n at next time.
Quitters are more often identified by not even trying than by stopping en route.
Good for CONSOL that they haven’t succumbed to identifying themselves as born losers.
