Open Thread: YSU-Pitt

Time to hit the road, but I’ll put this out before leaving.

The convergence of the start of school for the kids and the start of football season has been brutal. Just trying to get everything cleared away so I can get to Pittsburgh and enjoy the game and a night out. That’s my excuse for the dearth of posting leading up to the start of a new season and a (hopefully) new era under Paul Chryst.

We’ll see if Ray Graham gets any playing time. How the offensive line looks in pass protection. What Tino Sunseri can do (and how long it takes for someone to start booing him). Are the receivers going to be better when they run actual routes? And try to get a feel for what kind of head coach Paul Chryst will be on gameday.

Gametime is at 6pm. It is on ESPN3 (online) only.

I want two things:

1) the team improves greatly over the course of the season
2) they don’t embarrass me again

Odds anyone?

Comment by panther94 09.02.12 @ 9:54 pm

For people saying Pitt students suck, who the heck wants to go to Heinz field on a school bus to watch YSU crush Pitt?

How can the Students care about a football team when players are partying the night before? The PLAYERS don’t give a shit about the team, and neither do the fans because the program sucks.

It’s sucked for years. Nordenberg and Pederson have destroyed any hope for Pitt to be a future strong football school. It’s over until they’re gone.

Comment by Rob 09.02.12 @ 10:02 pm

A team, as the prevailing thought goes, improves the most, between their 1st and 2nd games. Let’s hope that happens. They don’t have a lot of time in a short week to make too many adjustments. Cincinnati likes to run a face paced offence, so their work will be cut out for them this week. I certainly hope they’re up to the challange. I’m not optimistic.

Comment by Justinian 09.02.12 @ 10:07 pm

Can we not blame the student body for the game day atmosphere? That is an asinine argument. I have been to every Pitt home game, every bowl game–except the Sun Bowl–and quite a few road games over the past six years, and the students are the ONLY people who consistently make noise. Most people in the stands are quiet. I know, because I get told to sit down when I stand and yell during the game. Apparently most Pitt fans don’t feel like standing up to cheer, and I can’t blame them, but don’t blame the students.

I am a more recent grad, so I am defensive on this one, and I wasn’t there for the glory days, but I can definitely say the student sections were the only sections that were packed and making any semblance of noise Saturday night.

Comment by TartanPanther 09.02.12 @ 10:26 pm

There’s enough talent on this team…that’s bull to say they’re middling. Not 11-1 talent, but definitely 8-9 win talent. I say Tino gets yanked after missing more downfield passes in either the Cincy or VTech game — just watch the veins on Chrysts neck as your barometer. Credit where its due — Youngstown played a smart game and their QB is good…someone said he didn’t have an arm but he had plenty of zip when needed. The D has talent and will rebound…may not be stellar but they will learn. We need quick strike capability to offset cheating Ds and we all know what that entails.

Comment by Matt N. 09.02.12 @ 10:27 pm

I just put $100 on Cincy over Pitt +3.5.
I thought the spread would be 10.

Comment by Joe D 09.02.12 @ 10:30 pm

The student section should not be criticized. They showed up. But left early. Bad weather and a terrible product on the field. The Oakland Zoo proves that the students will back a PITT year. Just give them a little success to work with….

Comment by panther10 09.02.12 @ 10:30 pm

I will absolutely BLAME the students for the “non” game day atmosphere…it boils my blood that they are so lame…there is about 2000 of them that are all in…the rest just sit there and wait to go home early…if the students would scream on every defensive play like they do for bball it could spark the terrible alumni’s that sit on there hands also…it drives me nuts when i watch thousands of people leave at halftime..and thousands more after sweet caroline…

Comment by pitt-for-life 09.02.12 @ 10:44 pm

Keep blaming the Student section.

Fans don’t cheer for their team getting crushed. God, some people on here are simply misguided. Yea, keep cheering when you’re getting steamrolled by YSU. Keep cheering when your program is in shambles.

Come on, get real. Pitt Football sucks and doesn’t deserve to be cheered for.

Comment by anonymouspitt 09.02.12 @ 10:52 pm

The absolute worst quote in Pitt football history!

“I have resigned as head coach at Pitt, and accepted the head coaching position at Texas A&M university.” J. Sherrill circa late ’81

Comment by Dan 09.02.12 @ 11:20 pm

panther94, I’ll give you odds, how about 1000 to 1 against. They will not improve greatly, and they will get embarrassed, if not by Cinci by VT. VT is going to lay a mega ass whupping on Pitt. It will be nationally televised embarrassment.

Comment by LUV PITTBULLS 09.02.12 @ 11:20 pm

LMAO!!!!!! Look above, many comments ago, at what we’ve devolved into. Many of us, INCLUDING MYSELF, were arguing about which losses are the worst!!!!!! Ha ha LOL!!!!!

“this has to be, YSU is a div 1-aa team (ya, I’m tired of all the fbs crap, I’ll call it what I want to),

“no, Bowling Green was a momentum killer”

“Ohio, are you friggin kidding me, Ohio”

“Holy Toledo, I can’t believe this”

“oh, you have to throw in those 76-0 and 63-17 drubbings from JM II”

LMAO!!!!!!

What a sad state of affairs, discussing (again, INCLUDING MYSELF) which loss was worse!!!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 09.02.12 @ 11:31 pm

I’ve been pro Harris, pro Wanny, pro Graham and pro Chryst at the beginning. I guess I just always hope!!!!!!!!

Wow, I’ve not given up yet, bet if you looked up the word buzzkill, this would be it.

After waiting all summer. I have to ask, what have you been doing???

Don’t want to hear about talent, or changing this or changing that, this was pathetic, from the word “go”.

It’s football, not rocket science. Absolutely no push from either line, no fire from anyone, no one getting pissed off.

This just may be the year I end this love affair. I always say a coach gets a couple of years, but, wow, I am thoroughly disgusted.

Growing pains, ya, I understand that.

Getting embarrassed, literally beat up, AT HOME, against Youngstown State.

There is nothin’ you can sell me on this one.

Don’t try to sell it, cause I ain’t buyin’ it!!

I mean, if someone didn’t watch the game, and just saw the score come across the crawler, they’d think, “oh, what an upset”.

Any of us that were there, or those that watched on the computer know quite differently.

We got are effin’ asses kicked up and down the field.

I see more emotion from the gallon of milk in my fridge.

This killed all of the glee of the PSU problems and them losing to Ohio.

Killed the excitement of trying to win the BE championship going out the door.

And it killed any excitement of going to the ACC.

Sad, disgusted and I have no more answers on coaching, offenses, defenses, I got nothin’ left.

It’s almost just about time to say “UNCLE”.

Call me disloyal, I could give a rat’s ass.

Comment by Dan 09.02.12 @ 11:40 pm

One more thing, I know we are a university first, sports comes second as someone last night mentioned.

That’s friggin’ fine. If our goal is to be an Ivy League school, or Duke, Stanford or Vanderbilt, that’s teriffic.

If that’s the case, then let the fans know. Don’t come out about winning, “we’re here to win”, switch conferences to the ACC to go after championships.

Just call it what it is. Seriously, just come out and let the fans know, football is way down the list on our agenda.

The chancellor, the trustees, the athletic department, just come out and say it!!

We’re big boys, if we aren’t here to try to field a great football team, then just effin’ say so!!

That way, we can all make our decisions, should we get excited about Pitt, or, our we in with CMU, Case Western and the Univ. of Chicago.

That’s fine, then it’s up to us as to what to do with our money, time and heart!!

Comment by Dan 09.02.12 @ 11:46 pm

Cincy will hit 50 by the third quarter.

Comment by Chris 09.03.12 @ 12:30 am

I don’t even want the good old days back anymore. Just:

1. Beat the teams you’re supposed to beat, and

2. Give me an occaisional upset.

Oh, one more thing. Look like you’re trying to win.

Comment by pittstadiumshuffle 09.03.12 @ 12:48 am

We never should have fired Wanny. He was “bad” but he was the best we could possibly do. Graham and Chryst are complete jokes.

Comment by TonyC 09.03.12 @ 1:39 am

OFF TOPIC: Who is the beat writer for Pitt at the PG? Werner’s byline has been missing, Zeise is in limbo and Fittipaldo has been getting the calls this week. Does the PG care at all about Pitt?

Comment by isnore 09.03.12 @ 7:41 am

I wanted to point something out on a related matter which I do not recall seeing here before. We took some out of town friends (another couuple, first time at Heinz) to the game on Saturday and we had agreed going in that we would make a night of it and stay for the fireworks, which we did. Painful as that might have been.

Anyway, my friend, who is an ex high school football coach found two things striking (1 – how can a senior qb be that bad?, 2 why is the student section empty after the 3rd quarter?).

I never had really paid much attention to anything other than the empty end zone before and attributed it to the fact that Pitt has been typically losing at that point in games and so they left.

So as were are leaving Heinz AFTER the fireworks, I mistakenly took the wrong escalator and left via the wrong gate and had to circle back around the stadium to get to Green 22. The line of students still waiting to get on buses to go back to Oakland was still almost up to the casino!

I know when I was at Pitt, it didn’t take me that long after a game to try and get the first seat at the Wooden Keg. These kids don’t want to wait in a 2 hour line to start partying of pitching woo and I, frankly, don’t blame them.

This AD is amazing. He can’t even design public transportation on a Saturday for crying out loud. I know we will never have Pitt Stadium back but after what I saw Saturday, it put a whole new perspective on why these kids leave early. And fireworks won’t keep a 19 year old in the stands, Steve.

Comment by wally 09.03.12 @ 7:48 am

Dan, I agree that the University didn’t do what they needed to do to keep Sherrill, but he was southerner and he wanted to go down south. Who knows if we could have kept him anyway. Sherrill idolized Bear Bryant and really wanted to coach at Alabama. We were unable to keep Johnny Majors when he got an offer from his alma mater, Tennessee. I wouldn’t jump ship on Chryst after one game. Yes, it’s an embarasing start and things may get worse in the next two weeks, but we need to support the new staff. It’s obvious that they have their work cut out for them. Deep down we all knew that Paul Chryst wasn’t walking into the same situation as Jackie Sherrill did in 1977, when he followed the national championship season.

Comment by Justinian 09.03.12 @ 7:51 am

Missed passes, dropped passes, fumbles, no pass rush, can’t stop a light weight running back, wide open receivers, poor schemes, no intensity, no physicality, six boneheads suspended.

Seems like a lot to fix in five days.

Comment by gc 09.03.12 @ 7:58 am

The reason I didn’t give Sunseri a bad grade…
he didn’t do anything that badly… no interceptions… no fumbles… no running out of bounds 10 yds back… etc Completion rate was ok.

The ground and pound game may work in Wisky… but not at Pitt when you don’t have an Oline… the short passing was working… why not more of it??

Shanny should lineup at Tight End on some plays.

Comment by Joe D 09.03.12 @ 8:32 am

They may have some talent, but they don’t have any toughness. And that is something that cannot be coached.

Comment by Joe Bull 09.03.12 @ 9:13 am

I have a friend I work who is a Cincy grad and has contacts at school. He says Cincy’s offense really looks good and they are intent to run up the score on a team that is exiting the big east. This game is really going to get ugly and than VaTech.
Don’t be surprised if this team completely loses its psych after three games……

Comment by DJS 09.03.12 @ 9:44 am

I was at the game and all I can say is, “I wish I had been a Youngstown State fan”! Yeah, Blah, blah, blah! Everybody should just see the glaring obvious fact that Pitt just got flat out beat by the better team on Saturday night. Better prepared, better coached, they wanted it more and they made less mistakes.

Nice thing about this game is that the Panthers now have hit bottom right off the bat. ANY win this season from this point forward has to be viewed as a step in the right direction.

And to think that most of us were worried about how Sunseri would play. LOL, he is the least of our problems. DEFENSE! Lets get some?

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.03.12 @ 9:51 am

One way to cure a losing attitude in a team is to infuse new blood be it coaching changes or new players. We’re stuck with our coaches for a while so it’s time to make changes in the starting lineup.

Forget about next year in the ACC, let’s start now to build momentum for next year with players who want to play football at Pitt.

It’s time for a change…

HTP!

Comment by MariettaMike 09.03.12 @ 10:01 am

@Justinian, oh ya, I realize that, but, just looking back, who would have known what the next 30 years was going to bring.

@Wally. Initially, I was on the students case the past few years, but, after talking to a few of them, just what you said. If they don’t leave early, they wait in line for several hours. Thought they may be making it out to be a bigger deal than it is, but you confirming it lets me believe what they said.

Remember that age too, sure some are sports fans, but a lot go to the game for the fun, and the booze and chicks afterwards. That was always part of the fun.

If you’re on campus, you can stumble out of the stadium at the end right into the bars of choice. Have to get in a line, for a ride, to get on a bus, to take you back to school???

I know there is no room on campus, not bringing that argument up. I hate this phrase “it is what it is”, but that’s it. You’re miles from campus and have to bus there, ya, I’m probably leaving early, if I even go at all. If the games on tv, definitely would have found me at the Keg, Zelda’s or Calicos watching the game, getting primed for the evening.

Comment by Dan 09.03.12 @ 10:45 am

I can’t comment on Chryst after one game. Hell, I usually say a coach always gets two or three years.

Just very disappointed. I didn’t expect him to “coach up” this group to beat Va Tech or ND or even Louisville (who looked pretty good yesterday when they had their starting qb in), but……..

getting hammered by YSU, and the lack of any inspiration at all, has me pretty deflated on the whole season.

Especially the lack of inspiration for the opening game. These guys should have been coming out like they were shot out of cannons.

As for talent, I wasn’t at camp, and frankly I don’t care. These are Div 1 players, even if the cupboard is somewhat bare, to come out with that steaming pile of crap of a game was inexcusable, no matter the talent level.

Maybe you start out 2-5, 3-6, then I could listen to someone tell me “hey, I told you we didn’t have much”.

Opening day against that team, to soil the field like they did. NO EXCUSES!! Absolutely horrible!

Comment by Dan 09.03.12 @ 10:53 am

For those of you crying about Wanny being gone, well that was his team in all it’s glory Saturday night. Those were mostly his recruits. And running Wanny style D, and Wanny’s QB, we got Wanny results. For those of you who think Tino wasn’t so bad, you must have been watching on your computer. He not only can’t throw diownfield, he throws behind receivers on the short passes or occasionally just at their feet. With a better QB, Pitt could have won this game.

Comment by Velvil 09.03.12 @ 11:15 am

Just read that Pitt returned tickets to UC. Apparently no interest in the team. Pederson has got to go. Is there any pitt alum interested in the position, ala Pat Hayden, Oliver Luck, Tom Osbourne, Barry Alvarez..help!!!

Pederson is cheap and always has been. We could have kept the OL coach if Pederson would have paid. Return on Investment occurs when you invest. Pederson doesn’t do that. He is cheap. When will people see that he hurt pitt his first time here, nearly killed Nebraska and is now killing pitt again. It starts at the top people and he is unfortunately, the top. He got to go, we got to stay!

Russ Grimm as AD? Mark May? TD? Tom Clement? Is there anyone out there that Steve P hasn’t alienated that we could bring back with open arms and let them run a program? Anyone? …..Damn crickets!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 09.03.12 @ 11:16 am

I’m not sure how we can say the defense is talented. Aside for Donald and perhaps Holley, who that was out on the field Saturday has actually shown in game situations that they are ‘talented’?

KK Smith was OK at best last season; Clemmings has shown nothing; Manny Williams and Eric Williams have shown nothing; Grigsby hasn’t every played before so we know nothing about him; Tags hasn’t played that well as a starter, Lippert is a journeyman, Ezell hasn’t shown anything during play, Hendricks has been up and down, Vinopal (who I really like) hadn’t played at PITT yet, etc…

Sorry but IMO we aren’t that talented and certainly not talented enough to overcome the real lack of experience going into 2012. That said, I think this group will be better in the future than we saw against YSU. Get some experience actually playing and we’ll see how talented they actually are but it may take half a season.

Comment by Reed 09.03.12 @ 11:30 am

Velvil – to blame this loss on Sunseri is scapegoating at it’s worse. Our defense couldn’t stop YSU at all and couldn’t keep them from converting 3rd and 4th down conversions when it mattered.

Comment by Reed 09.03.12 @ 11:33 am

Pitt-for-life, how can you blame the students for a lack of enthusiasm when this team has consistently sucked since 1982. I was a student during our Fiesta Bowl season and when the team won and was ranked, Heniz was filled. The next year when they lost to Ohio U., Nebraska, and ND to start the season, the place was empty.

I am a football nut and will go no matter what. The typical college kid wants to get loaded and laid and the team will have to win to get them interested and in the stadium for the whole game.

Comment by AJ 09.03.12 @ 11:47 am

MariettaMike, we may be stuck with Chryst for a while but we aren’t necessarily stuck with all the coaches. Tony Levine,The University of Houston’s new coach, after an embarrassing loss to Texas State (not to be confused with The University of Texas but at least a FBS school) replaced his offensive coordinator one game into the season. It may not work but at least he has some balls. If Chryst had any he would shake up the staff and the players.

Comment by Houston Panther 09.03.12 @ 11:52 am

I just watched the first half of Wisconsin vs. 1AA Northern Iowa. Northern Iowa would have kicked the shit out of Pitt. They were really sticking it to the big O-Line of Wisky and although they weren’t winning, they made an impression.

Comment by AJ 09.03.12 @ 11:55 am

Well all that really needs to be said that the OC kept the plays pretty simple, except for the occasitional long pass. They let him throw it deep 3 times straight. They wouldnt do that last year. Graham looked surprisingly good for just coming back from his injury. Two many dropped passes. The Defense was terrible and whats worse is they couldnt get YSU off the field so that our offense could do better. Whats worse is that the offense didnt take any chances. or tried to keep running up the middle. There was no originality in the play calling. The same exact play. We got 4 days till Cincy. If we can beat Cincy i believe we will be alright. Put the names back on the damn jerseys.

Comment by Kohan 09.03.12 @ 12:06 pm

I attended Apollo-Ridge HS. You want to talk about a bad HS football program. They had a few good seasons but for the most part pitiful. I have never railed against them because such is life.

I agree with Reed and others. What did the veteran players prove the previous two years, not much. What top shelf talent was in the Pitt Football cupboard for PC, not much. What did the veteran players prove last evening, not much.

It is childish to say the least to crucify PC after one game in light of the above. It is shortsighted and is only magnified through the looking glass of the last two years of Pitt Football.

Will PC change the defeated culture of this program, only time will tell. But I want him to weed out any vestiges of accepted mediocrity, piss-poor/self-entitled/non-hard working players and any visions of grandeur for a team with as many holes as this one.

On a side note Reed, while TS was not terrible his limitations were there for all to see…

Comment by Kenny 09.03.12 @ 12:11 pm

Reed, now do you realize the battle i’ve been fighting over this past year in trying to convince many here that it is not always about the QB? I was much more alarmed about Pitt getting stuffed 3 times by a DII team than i was about the QB.

And BTW, Arizona St ran the ball an incredible 51 times the other night (for > 300 yds) vs 20 passes. Do you think that OL matters??

Comment by wbb 09.03.12 @ 12:19 pm

Let me add one small bit of perspective: I was at the Pitt-Iowa game last year. At the start of the 4th quarter, the student section was virtually deserted, and only the first 5-10 rows or so were filled. People just don’t stick around for blowouts. Now Iowa turned around to win that game, and if you ask most students, they’ll swear they were at that game, but I can tell you for a fact that AT LEAST 75%–and that is a conservative estimate–had left. Now, if students are leaving at Iowa, which is right on the campus, with nothing else to do, against a BCS team, on a nice day, as part of a program that has had a lot of recent success, how much can you fault any Pitt fan for leaving yet another disaster, in the rain, against an FCS team, mired in one of the worst stretches in program history, where we have had ONE ten-win season in the past 30+ years. Yeah its a disgraces, blah, blah, blah, but Pittsburgh sports fans aren’t stupid. They’re loyal, and they will come back (see: Pirates) but you have to put a winning product on the field first.

Comment by TartanPanther 09.03.12 @ 12:35 pm

I don’t know why people are complaining about student attendance right now. I thought turnout was quite strong for a rain soaked game against a D1 FCS opponent. But with performances like that, I’d have trouble blaming Pitt fans if attendance averaged 20,000 per game for the rest of the season. Simply put: we need to win. And getting manhandled by programs that are supposedly inferior is, undoubtedly, a huge setback.

Comment by PatMac 09.03.12 @ 12:49 pm

Teams take on the character of their coach. Our coach is a laid back, always tired-sounding, a nice guy.

Is it any wonder that Pitt on Saturday night played laid-back, tired, and nice?

And those of you who (still) say Chryst must stay, is THAT what you want? Really?? And if so, why?

Contrast that with lowly Colorado State out here, on nobody’s map, not even in Colorado. But they hired Jim McIlwain, the OC at Alabama, as their first-time head coach.

And CSU was amazingly inspired on Saturday, feeding off their amped-up coach to beat a much more talented Colorado Buffs team.

Looks like we hired the wrong OC…

Comment by Imma Man! Im 40! 09.03.12 @ 12:50 pm

Thoughts:

– Well 475 comments in and I think all agree that wasn’t a good game by Pitt.

– I haven’t seen PC full interview but wonder if anyone asked why they didn’t seem to adjust the D to what YSU was doing. Was it due to them as coaches just missing it or do they feel the players can only do what’s been asked. Either way, the lack of making ingame adjustments has been Pitt’s biggest trouble and that didn’t seem to be fixed with the new guys.

– I see some already want to fire PC. Well, you might want to start watching a different team then since that’s not going to, nor should it, happen. He’s going to at least get 3 and more likely 5 years to build the team the way he wants it.

– And let’s be honest, the players they’re working with are mainly leftovers by the past coaches. Any of the really good ones are already in the NFL. If DW was still the coach today, I’d say 3/4 of these guys wouldn’t even be starting. That doesn’t mean I think DW was the greatest coach in the world, but to me, this highlights the damage from inconsisent recruiting for the past couple years.

– For this year, it is what it is…unless either Graham or Shell become top 5 RB’s in the country or the D somehow figures out how to play football. Guess we’ll all find out on Thursday.

Comment by burgh1972 09.03.12 @ 12:58 pm

Kenny – as a coumterpoint. Yes, we know he has limitations. But he’s two points – watch the ESPN3 reply of the pass down the sidelines to Street that Sunseri “missed”. You’ll see Street practically jogging the route then turning up the speed when he realizes the ball is in that air. Ralph Fridgen the commantatory made note of Street’s poor effort twice on that play.

Second – for those who complain about Sunseri’s arm strength – watch that TD pass again. Sunseri throws a frozen rope 35 yards IN THE AIR between two defenders and perfectly into Brinson’s hands.

That was one of the best passes we’ve seen in years.

So yes, we say some poor plays but we also saw him complete 66% of his passes, no TOs and he took no sacks.

We had one three & out during that game. Our other three play drive ended only because of Street’s fumble.

Was it a great game? No, but he played well and to point to him for that loss is insane. Especially when our defense gives up drives of 10, 15, 15, and 12 plays. YSU scored on five of the six actual drives (not including running out the clock at each half). Five of six!

That is where the finger should point.

Comment by Reed 09.03.12 @ 1:05 pm

I would say Tino is not viewed in good light by the rest of the team and they don’t believe they can win with him at qb, they’ve seen this for 3 years and that kind of psychological block is hard to overcome.

Comment by Pittastic 09.03.12 @ 1:18 pm

Reed,

Are you’re talking about the overthrow to Street in the first half?

Watching the replay, I believe Sunseri threw the ball to the outside and not right on top of the angle in which Street is running.

Chryst (and Rudolph) did design a safe conservative gameplan tailored to give Sunseri the best chance of success, a lot of short outside throws and sitdown routes for the TEs.

But give Tino credit. He executed it pretty well.

The problem with his performance is that he did not make any plays with his feet, not just running but also buying time in order to find a secondary receiver breaking free.

Sunseri simply doesn’t have the ability to make a big play out of an extended play. That really limits the big play ability of an offense.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.03.12 @ 1:43 pm

Has anyone heard anything more on the six clowns that got suspended?

Comment by Coach Ditka 09.03.12 @ 1:54 pm

Pittastic and PittofDreams both have valid/credible views in respect to TS. He is what he is that being a limited QB. He is not a play maker when needed to be one. When a player does not engender confidence/respect from his fellow players what is the end result…

Comment by Kenny 09.03.12 @ 1:58 pm

If you also recall.. regarding Chryst…

He has no goals for the coaches, players, etc.
Just get better…
That is not CEO/HC material…

Then regarding play calling… lol… 4th and 1 got the play in with 8 secs… snapped on 1 sec.. cluster fuck.
He wouldn’t commit to who was calling the plays… on offense or defense.
He is your typical control freak who can’t delegate… I noticed Chryst was running the practices with very little delegation to the DC or OC.

Reed, yes; the defense is a serious problem. And from what I hear you can blame the DC for, at best, wanting to be anywhere else but Pitt; at worst, not giving a shit.

Coach Ditka:

(Chryst)…said the six suspended players will get to practice this week. He said he won’t decide until later in the week if they get to play at Cincinnati.

Here’s my suggestion for the problem surrounding Sweet Caroline.

Move the song to either halftime or better yet save it for after the game for a “Fifth Quarter” performance by the Pitt Band.

Have the Pitt Band play Sweet Caroline in collaboration with the Pitt student section.

A Fifth Quarter featuring Sweet Caroline should help solve the problem of students leaving early for the gates.

For those who have not seen it, Fifth Quarters involving the school band are pretty popular at some schools.

One that comes to mind is Wisconsin were the tradition is for the band to play the Budweiser Thems song among others.

Win or lose it keeps the majority of fans and students in the stadium until the band has finished playing.

Solve the students leaving early in two steps:

1. No bus leaves until game is over.

2. Pass out a card after the game to anyone leaving. Card holders have priority on the bus over anyone in line.

As to control freaks. President Carter was a control freak. He personally spent time deciding the White House tennis court schedule.

And he was a pretty good President. Oh, wait a minute, never mind.

Seriously I’m thinking of opening a halfway house Counseling Center for PITT alumni since 1963.

We will offer counseling and other things(massive quantities of booze) to deal with the fortunes of following PITT football !!

@Pitt of Dreams

Great idea I love it, a 5th Quarter.
Only problem is somebody like Wisconsin usually wins 95% of their home games. So people are in a celebatory spirit for some 5th quarter fun.

Somebody like us (pITT) we lose 50% of our home games and usually always against anyone of note.

So while i love the idea, I can’t imagine staying after, say the latest home loss to YSU, to sing Sweet Caroline or anything else, how about We are the Champions (not).

Maybe the theme to Charlie Brown would me more appropriate, we could all hum along since it’s instrumental. 🙂

No bus leaves till the game is over?

GREAT! Then NO ONE WILL GO. No one wants to see these pathetic losers get drunk the night before a game, get suspended, and get their asses handed to them.

You CANT force fans to like their team. You have to EARN fans. Fans want to cheer-they’ve wanted to for years-but we fail year after year. Fans are sick of it. Students don’t care-why should they? The team sucks

Reed — how much does Sal pay you? That’s such a bogus argument about Street jogging…are you serious. Tino had plenty of time to see the play develop and make the throw on what he saw — Street wide open behind the db — and he still blew it. As I said previously, he made a nice throw on the td to Brinson but missed badly on any throw that required touch. Anderson better strap it on this week ’cause he’s likely going in at Cincy.

No – that 1st half pass was on the wrong shoulder & a bad pass. I meant the 2nd half deep sideline route at the 12:20 mark of the 4th quarter.

Comment by Reed 09.03.12 @ 7:08 pm

It would be nice to have another passing stat which tracks completions that are of 2 yards or less. It looks like the Pitt QB would have a lot of completions in this column.

Can’t blame the students. The stadium requires a bus ride to get to, the parking situation is horrific even if they have cars and the team has waffled between horrid and mediocre from a decade before they were born.

There is no emotional attachment. How are you supposed to build positive emotions when the whole thing is just a terrible experience? Get up early as hell so you can take a bus to Heinz Field for a noon kickoff to watch Pitt struggle to beat terrible teams or to get blown out buy the good ones. Even the kids from Western PA would have absolutely no positive memories of this team growing up.

I’m from Jersey and only went to Pitt because a scholarship made it cheaper than Rutgers (a school with a very similar fan base, just missing the decade of success and the old timers holding on to a dead in state rivalry). The only reason I even care is because I love football, I saw some great wins (VT leaving BE, ND so proud of this fucking football team, and WVU dagger) and I enjoy stuffing my face and binge drinking in parking lots.

I’m also a Jets fan. I’m used to the sheer hopelessness of it all. I’ve been watching Sunseri on Saturday and then Sanchez on Sunday. I hate football.

Matt – It wasn’t just me that noticed Street pulling up on his sideline route. Everyone around me at the stadium commented on it as it happened right below us. Also, Ralph Friedgen, the ESPN3 color man, noticed it and commented it during the live action and on the replay. I’d say Friedgen knows what he’s talking about.

This is the 4th quarter pass I’m talking about – not the poor throw on the 1st half pass where Street was wide open and Sunseri blew it. That was a typical Sunseri muff.

Hoopies reach a new low. It is reported that some WVU students were chanting, “Hope your plane crashes” to the Marshall football team after the game. And they wonder why they have such a bad national reputation. I will take our classy Pitt students any day over a bunch of drunk, rude and classless Hoopie Hillbillies in Morgantown.
