I know the drill. It’s one we probably all know. We’ve seen it at Pitt. We’ve seen it at other schools. New coach comes in. He’s not just a promising coach. He’s a special guy. He gets “it.”

This AP story by Will Graves is decent enough. Doesn’t go over the top about Chryst. Plays up the humble, doesn’t like to talk about himself aspect.

When asked what a “Paul Chryst Team” is going to look like, the man tasked with providing a meandering program with stability just lets out a small sigh.

“Number one, it’s not my team,” he said. “I’m not the only coach, but our staff believes and I really respect and enjoy the game and playing it the right way. To me that’s the thing you’re shooting for, you know, all the clichés.”

It’s not that Chryst is intentionally trying to sound boring. It’s just that he’s not a big talker or self-promoter. Maybe that’s why the 46-year-old had to wait so long to get his first head coaching gig despite being considered one of the top offensive minds in college football for a decade.

Chryst hardly cares. He’s here now, trying to provide a sense of calmness to a program that’s spent two seasons in transition, from coach to coach to coach and conference to conference.

The whole anti-Graham theme is strong in any story about Chryst. To be fair it is hard not to draw a very huge distinction between the two.

At the same time we built up the same crap with Graham last year. The inspiring back story of being raised by a single mom. Playing at a small D-III school. Working his way up. He was positively portrayed as energetic and revitalizing. That arrogance was portrayed as a bravado and cockiness. Even drawing comparisons to Oklahoma native, Jackie Sherrill — before the season started. We all know how that turned out.

This is not saying that Chryst is the same as Graham once the the basics are stripped away. This is about making the coach into something more than he is. I mean, there was a statue just removed at another school for going so far down that path for too long.

So, I don’t want to be negative, but this comes so close to going over the top.

But the fact that Chryst is quiet, humble, genuine and extremely down to earth only masks the fact that a competitive fire burns in him and that he is committed to building a winning program, one loaded with players who will make fans proud on and off the field.

“Paul isn’t a guy like the last guy Pitt had who is going to sit there and blow smoke about what he is going to do and how great he is,” said Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, a former Badgers coach who had Chryst on his staff.

And that’s why Alvarez, from Burgettstown, Washington County, said Chryst is the perfect fit for Pitt because he is an old-school “faith, family and football” guy whose work ethic and values are similar to people in Western Pennsylvania.

“He is not one of those ‘on the phone’ guys, he isn’t always searching for the next best thing,” Alvarez said. “He is working hard, and he doesn’t waste time because he is a great family man, a great husband and father. There isn’t much time for much else beyond football and family when you are a coach but he has that balance. I know the people in Western Pennsylvania and what they value, I am a Western Pennsylvania guy, and Paul is a great fit there.”

Yes these are his friends and mentors talking Chryst up, but let’s actually keep the same perspective on Chryst that he says he has.

“At the end of the day the thing that matters most is your family,” Chryst said, “and I think that you do have to find that balance between work and family, but I don’t think football coaches are unique in that department — I’m not different than the guys punching a clock and working, we’re all looking for balance. I think you can do your job well and take care of your family.

“The key for me is, I try to keep things simple, I don’t think you need to make it more complicated than it is and I try not to worry about things I can’t control. It is just how I’ve always done things. I want to be the best at everything I do, but I do believe that a coach’s most important job is to help players become the best they can be, and that’s really where my focus is.”

And that on-the-field performance will ultimately define how we, as fans, define Chryst.

Just to remind everyone just how fortunate we are to have someone like Paul Chryst… here’s a quote from the weekend that needs no introduction.

“Our program is going to be about winning championships.”

Question… Did he ever win a championship?

listen, i think the program is in good hands, might take some time, but the end product will be good. we just need to sprinkle some of Chyrst’s laid back attitude on the bloggers here.

It doesn’t matter if its Awww Shucks or the over the top I’m better than everyone else approach is used then end result is wins and losses (while doing it the right way). Now I’m glad Fraud is gone, but I’m not prepared to give Coach Cryst Sainthood either. His recruiting needs to pick up, and yes I’m willing to give him time to get that in order. I’m giving my suport, but I’m also being very cautious at the same time.

At least it’s not Paul Hacket as head coach. Well atleast I hope and pray its not.

If you keep in mind that the last two recruiting classes have been affected by the coaching upheavals, our expectations should be somewhat lower. If they show enough improvement to start attracting some of the players they need, I will consider his first year a success. Considering everything that’s gone on here over the last two years, that’a a realistic expectation. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

this confirms what we all knew — T Graham is the anti-Chryst

PC brings scructure to an unstable program the players can just focus on doing their job on and off the field there is talent here, goin back to what they know should produce better results. I think PC is the guy for the job can’t wait to see how he does

Comment by steve h 08.06.12 @ 9:39 am

this NE pa guy and family are going to make 5 round-trips to support my alma mater, this team and this “adult” coach. PC is building the foundation of a Program which will take a little while. Our job is to get people in the seats and make some noise. HTP!

pittofdreams – yes, he was the offensive coordinator for the 2010 and 2011 Big Ten championship Wisconsin teams.

wbb, You’re being rough on poor TG. After all Penny has family in Arizona. Too bad she doesn’t have family in Timbuktu!

Comment by Justinian 08.06.12 @ 10:30 am

I don’t know what Juantez Hollins did to get on PC’s $hitlist but I do know that suspending him from game participation for the entire season took some major brass balls. This should of, could of, been a key OL cog in this team’s offense but no more. I’m thinking that Chyrst has already shown his hand regarding discipline and has made it loud and clear that there will be a price to pay if your actions are beyond the acceptable limits of team guidelines, no matter WHO you are or how important you would have been in helping the team win games. Sure sends a message to the rest of the team.

I just hope this doesn’t come back to bite us, since we are so thin at offensive tackle, regarding guys with experience. If the injury bug gets the OL like it did last year we could be playing true freshman by season’s end.

I’m ready for some football. HTP

Lets Play Real Pitt football that Chris Doleman and Curtis Martin would Be proud of Hail to Pitt

All we can do now is wait fellas.

We can’t outslime WVU.
Hell, we can’t outslime PSU.
We will never have Super Bowl trophies in our foyer.
We can’t appeal to the millions of Catholic fans who believe rooting for ND qualifies as a Sacrament (not me baby!).
BUT, we can be ourselves…and that is as follows: A University that, along with CMU, saved Pittsburgh from turning into a mixture of Detroit and Toledo; because while everything around it was crumbling, it managed to thrive.
A university that erred on the side of academia and not making a team the equivalent of a god.
A fan base that in fact, given the level of poor performance over the last 25 years is as loyal as any…no, we don’t have numbers, but we have a great core around which to build.
WE ARE NOT PENN STATE, WE DON’T HAVE OUR KIDS WEAR VULGAR SHIRTS WITH PRIDE, WE DONT CHEAT AND THEN PRETEND WE DIDN’T KNOW, and WE DON’T REALLY CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE THINKS.
Pitt has alot to be proud of..a great start by any criteria.

Reed,

I guess it flew over your head.

The quote was from this weekend by the new head coach for the Sun Devils.

The question still stands, did he ever win a championship since that’s what all his teams are apparently about?

Time to realize how great we truly are and then live up to it.

Wait a second! Todd Graham was all about family too.

He quit his job at Pitt and moved to Arizona all for his family because his wife didn’t like the cold and his kids got picked on!

What a family man!

Justinian the last 2 recruiting class were very good and the last class the ones who are freshmen this year was great.
There were 4 players who were 4 star players and a lot of high 3 stars
It is way better then this class at leat so far.

Comment by FRANKCAN 08.06.12 @ 4:40 pm

And let us not forget about Pitt’s legacy for great NFL tradition as well. This past weekend’s induction of two more Pitt guys says it all.

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.06.12 @ 5:24 pm

The 2011 class in average stars was pedestrian. The 2012 was decent. The 2013 probably won’t be any different than 2012 in that regard at the end of the day. Its problem in appearances at the moment is that Scout gives a default 2-star rating to all un-evaluated players once they sign. They don’t get that changed until they get the players evaluated–that might not happen until after the players play their senior season in the fall. Similarly, Rivals doesn’t assign any stars to kids they haven’t evaluated and, likewise probably won’t get around to it until at least sometime in the fall. Both methodologies make Pitt’s class (or anybody’s who isn’t loading up on kids who were highly rated as sophs and juniors–i.e., only the typical top 10 -15 power schools) look weak in August. ESPN, on the other hand, has bothered to evaluate all the kids Pitt has gotten commits from. They like both kickers (3-stars each) with Blewitt their #5 PK nationally. They also have rated all the other Pitt commits except OL Carson Baker (2-star), as at least a 3-star. Bottom line, they now have Pitt’s 2013 class averaging 3.00 stars/recruit. That’s consistent with every Pitt class except the 2011 class that slumped when it had all the defections when Wanny was fired.

Comment by pitt1972 08.06.12 @ 7:02 pm

Said “sign” above when I meant to say “commit.”

Comment by pitt1972 08.06.12 @ 7:08 pm

pitt 1972 the class from 2012 had 5 players that were 4 star between scout and rival and the 3 stars from that class like the daves twins had offers from good schools like iowa and wisconsin
the 3 stars we are geting this year have offers from kent state or bowling green,

I just dont see this class as that good i know there is time yet but it does not look good.

Comment by FRANKCAN 08.06.12 @ 8:49 pm

I should have said big schools becuse i dont remmber which schools they had offers from. the commits this year have offers from mac schools i was just makeing a point..
