Okay, looks like we officially have 348 days until Pitt is a part of the ACC.

The Big East Conference and the University of Pittsburgh announced today that both organizations have reached an agreement on Pittsburgh’s departure from the Big East and move to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Under the terms of the agreement reached between the Big East and Pittsburgh, Big East members will vote, in accordance with the Big East’s bylaws, to terminate Pittsburgh’s membership in the Big East effective July 1, 2013, at which point Pittsburgh will join the ACC. In addition to other consideration, Pittsburgh will make a total cash payment to the Big East of $7.5 million, which includes the $5 million withdrawal fee under the Big East Bylaws applicable at the time Pittsburgh gave notice of withdrawal.

“This is another step for the Big East to take toward a very exciting future. With the addition of our eight new members, the Big East will be incredibly strong and vibrant,” said Joe Bailey, Interim Commissioner of the Big East.

Steve Pederson, Athletic Director for the University of Pittsburgh said: “We have appreciated and enjoyed our membership in the Big East and wish them much success in the future. We are anxious to compete in our final season in the Big East and look forward to an exciting future in the Atlantic Coast Conference.”

Mildly surprised Pitt didn’t work the number down a little considering the hit Pitt took to the football schedulue this year, but it’s not like the Big East would be (or should be) terribly sympathetic.

There was increasing pressure on both sides to settle. Not simply because Syracuse and the Big East reached their agreement earlier. Neither side wanted to head to Big East Media Day in less than 2 weeks with this still over their heads.

Oh, there will be questions. At least for the players on Media Day about final season playing in the Big East.

“We’ve got a lot to just focus with just ourselves,” Chryst said. “We’ve got a really good group of seniors. This is their last year and anything but focusing on this year … would be cheating everyone.”

Not really much to ask Coach Paul Chryst other than, “Coach, what’s it going to be like playing as a lame duck in the Big East this year?” He’s got no memories or history with the conference.

It is also good news for Pitt with recruiting as they can legitimately tell recruits that they will definitely be playing in the ACC next year.

In other Big East lawsuit news, the Big East abruptly dismissed, with prejudice, its lawsuit against TCU for the unpaid exit fee. Presumably this means the money has been paid, but that is unconfirmed.

Thanks for the good memories big east. Looking forward to bringing old school big east basketball to the ACC! Here’s to a brighter future.

time to move on. Pay the money and move on. WVU paid 21 Million so we go a real deal. SU paid 6 million and we will chalk it down as “good will” for a founding member. 7.5 Million is ok by me. Consider it “Sunk Cost” for moving to the ACC.

Came down to not being able to prove damages as previously suggested. You need a paper trail and it just wouldn’t be available until after the season, so this is fine. Glad that it is over. Would be interested to see what we paid counsel for this work as well as all the collateral hours used internally. This is total cost of risk at its finest. Everyone focuses on the final settlement, but it usually is not indicative of the final cost. I still don’t think smiley could negotiate his way out of a wet paperbag. Sorry, I just don’t care for his first or second tenure to date.

Glad to be starting the countdown to ACC. Now let’s not go all “WVU” and start talking crap on our new conference and our old one like we were King of the Hill. Let’s go get some players and get ready for some football!!

Dhuffdaddy, you look at the cost the way I do. Syracuse owes us one. I really don’t think the money we laid out was worth it. I think Pederson will be out a year after we join the ACC. For now we need to show some stability. It is time we had some people with business sense involved in our Athletic Dept. Pederson is out of his leauge.

I wonder what the statement: “In addition to other considerations, Pittsburgh….” means

Generally “other considerations” is boilerplate language. In this case, I imagine it includes some contract terms that says Pitt agrees not disparage the Big East.

Smell ya later Big East…

had hoped and expected a lower exit fee– but i guess it’s what it is. not complaining. will think how i can save a dollar or two or three for next year’s panther club.

Okay. Now it’s settled. Let’s bring home Big East championships in football and basketball and maybe the Pitt baseball team will finally reach the NCAA tournament.

Big East Championship or Bust!

The bball will be missed. Had lots of fun in NYC at the tournament, but the football has been horrible.
The home schedule will certainly be better and some of the road games will be attractive. Miami in October beats Rutgers or UConn. Also Maryland is an easy trip and nice place to see a game.

Considering the new TV deal that ESPN inked with the ACC, Pitt will benefit to the tune of $17,000,000 now in 2013. This is considerably more than the shared revenue Pitt would have received from the current BE TV ESPN contract (although that BE TV deal is up for renewal this year). Simply crunching the numbers makes it obvious that Pitt needed out of the BE after this season. The ante of an additional $2.5 million makes sense just to “get r done” and move on to greener pastures.

Now if we can just win the frickin BE championship out right this one time, it would be a fitting so long jesture to the BE brass and a great momentum builder to our first season in the ACC. Hail to Pitt

Chas – I would guess that “other consideration” might include a commitment to play some games against the likes of UConn, Rutgers, UCinn , Lou and USF

“This is another step for the Big East to take toward a very exciting future. With the addition of our eight new members, the Big East will be incredibly strong and vibrant,” said Joe Bailey, Interim Commissioner of the Big East.

LMAO…another step forward. This guy should be a politician. What a joke !!!

We need to win BE Championships in our lame duck season(s). Let’s clean house. It would be epic.

Hail to Pitt!
