If it is a matter of a kid not being sure whether or not they have an offer, that is one thing, but I sometimes wonder just how much selling a coach can do to a recruit. Sure there are the prima-donna’s who want to be courted and offer their services to the “highest bidder”, but these kids are individuals too, with their own thoughts and ideas about what they like and what makes them feel comfortable. Chryst could have given any one of the “missed recruits” the hard sell, and they STILL may have gone to Penn State (or wherever). Just because that is what they liked better. Pitt isn’t going to win all of the recruiting battles.

But it hurts when a kid choses Pedo State over Pitt. I could have better accepted a loss to tOSU or Michigan. But, State Penn? I think I just pooped my pants.

Johnson visited PSU four times, and he quoted that he wanted to play big-time football. As someone else has said, once people see how PC can coach, the recruits will come. Patience people.

IMO a college coach must have the following priorities in order to succeed:

1. recruiting
2. recruiting better
3. coaching
4. education

Looks like we are off to a bad start and only have a realistic chance at a few top players. New coaches that get off to great recruiting are the ones that turn around programs quickly, win, and keep their jobs for years.

Agreed, it’s concerning Pitt has failed in recruiting to this point. But, as it’s already been said, we’re still only 6 months into a coaching staff, and they have yet to play a game. Most on here didn’t expect PC to light up the recruiting trail right away, but did expect him to coach up the team with whatever talent he has to work with on game day. If he fails at that, then maybe we start to find the panic button. But it’s way, way too early at this point to think that Pitt made another bad coaching decision. PC just needs to win.

I’d like to think that some adjustments will be made after the season to improve the recruiting efforts. At this point, you’d have to think that the staff and Pederson are eyeing this as an area of improvement as it is borderline pathetic to let players like Johnson fall to Pedo St. Pitt needs to bring in and be willing to pay some assistant coaches who can actually recruit.

Know your niche. I believe we can become a big fish in a medium pond (ACC) but have serious doubts about being a perennial Top 10/15 threat.

Wisconsin with Chryst as OC has done some pretty good things with 2-3 star recruits so, as previously suggested, we all need to take a big breath

I think Nordy and Pederson should consider firing him.

Losing Johnson an obvious big disappointment.

However, I am in the belief that once both coaches show what they can do and the wins and losses begin to matter… it’ll be Chryst and not O’Brien recruiting the next big-name lineman out of the WPIAL.

What will it take for Pitt to play ‘big time football?’ Pitt is moving to a better football conference shortly. But, Pitt needs to consistently win. State Penn’s record hasn’t been all that impressive over the past decade and they are no longer a nationally relevant program so what makes them a bigger and better program? Is it the fact that their fans travel and show up on Saturdays? Is the Big 10 really the conference that WPA kids want to play? What gives?

100k at every game, bigger TV exposure (more national games than PSU including prime time Sat night on ABC, better bowl tie-ins with the B10

Considering the coaching corral, and how irrelevant pitt has been in the last few years (football), how can you start complaining ? Lets see what PC can do first hand..then complain. I mean he held on to some big names that TG had picked up.

If your a recruit, what reason would you have coming to Pitt ? No draft picks last year, coaching has been a mess, plays in the big east (at least one more year)

For whatever reasons, its a tough sell right now for any head coach. Even then we still have some talent coming in.

Why do some of you think Chryst must prove his coaching mettle on the field first, in order to attract recruits?

Bill O’Brien’s record as a head coach is identical (0-0).

As Pitt fans, in my opinion, we have to accept that will be difficult for Pitt to compete with PSU and OSU. First the Big-Ten exposure compared to the Big-Esat or ACC is overwheling. The only game in town, no Steelers, 100,000 seat stadiums. Football programs that run the university and the towns they reside in (therefore football studs are real BMOC’s not only on campus but in the small fish bowl they live in).

Exposure, money from alumni,all the trappings of big-time college football that Pitt can not offer.

In the 70’s and early 80s when Pitt was the dominat team in the nation factors existed then that will never exist again. Two southern coaches with connects at a time when black atheletes in the south were still being shunned by the major schools.

They came to Pitt and Pitt was able to recruit the top OL and DL from PA., Ohio, and N.Y. who wanted to play with these players.

No ESPN, superconferences, just ABC. Be at the top and you played 3 national games. Pitt at this time would be the first national and last national game of the season. We did not need to sell out Pitt statdium in effect for from 76′ through 81′ we were America’s team.

The desegration of southern athletics and the boom of cable TV as well as population demographic shits have changed the enviornment.

In my opinion all is not lost because Chryst on the sidelines is worth 7 points a game for Pitt in contrast the Pitt coaches since Sherrill were worth 7 points a game (Graham +14) to our opponent.

Beacuse Pitt is not Penn State in terms of football power. Not yet. Tough as that may be for us to admit.

I think there’s a tendency to read too much into a recruit’s decision. If only the coach recruited harder, if only he had more wins, if only more fan attendance, etc. Some kids want out of the city, some want to play close to home, some like the facilities, some don’t. Who knows what a 17 year old and his parents are thinking? This is why they make different colored paint.

Chryst does need to step up the recruiting. If he doesn’t like to recruit, then get coaches from those recruiting areas that LOVE to recruit and have proven themselves as effective recruiters. Ideally, they are also good position coaches. Pitt then needs to find the money to give these ace recruiters and stop being so cheap. A 2 or 3-star recruit only has so much upside unless you come across a kid that is a diamond in the rough…that seldom happens. Give me 4-stars any day and coaches that won’t regress that level of talent. No way we should be losing recruits in our own backyard to Pedo State and a former New England Patsy coach.

what my be wrong with chryst staff is that they all have ties to wisconsin the hireing of breckterfield as dockish points out made no sence he should have got a coach who could recruit ohio pa or nj not one from the west coast.

I want Pitt to win sooo bad, it just gets hard sometimes w/ all the recent transgressions and the never ending chorus of people saying they will never be good again. Yet hope springs eternal. Lets get Chis Dokish’s blog right….It is about recruiting. Doke’s post are from a recruiting viewpoint. He lays leaves the cupboard bare in respect to Pitt recruiting. Yes, he is right from a recruiting perspective BUT does not include recent/current turmoil at Pitt. This is understandable because he is a recruiting analyst.

Many of you are just like Doke, if Pitt does not get the biggins you lash out at the HC irrespective of his circumstances. That is your right but as for me, my wife, the cat and dog are pulling for HCPC and Co. to be a success at building Pitt’s/our football program up and if he does ma, me and the animals are going to let you star gazers no about it…

It was very realistic to think that a kid in your own backyard, who grew up a Pitt fan, whose Pitt coach Randolph had ties to your HS school, whose head coach is an OL guru, where playing time as a frosh was given, whose school is clean and not subject to any sanctions would win out over Pedo State. Losing this recruit to Nitter Nation should have NEVER happened. I would have told my child that ‘established programs’ are fine but those that protect and enable Pedophile tickle monsters are off limits.

The guy just started though. I know about Penn St and the kid they got.

Still, Chryst just started brother. Just started at a place that has played mediocre ball for years, had a coach who didn’t befriend the local h.s. coaches, a place that has so-so attendance, and a place that has gone through many coaches the last few years. A pure mess!!!

And after all of the turmoil, many will hate this, but the PSU scandal will be going away.

The recruits know, the monster is gone to jail for life, the liars will be going to jail, and come September, there is going to be 100,000 blue and white fans in the stands.

Sure, terrible, gut wrenching about the children. If the perps are taken care of, then for the common fan, they’ll be saying time to move on. They’ll have some charities for the kids I’m sure, stuff like that, but PSU football will move forward.

You know other coaches are using the Heinz Field half empty with yellow seats on these kids.

PSU is still a revered football destination for recruits irrespective of the JS scandal.

Pitt has not been a revered football destination since Sherrill left. This is an irrefutable fact and to expect Pitt’s football program to be a prime destination for prime recruits is incorrect because there is a correlation between a school’s football program’s overall success and the recruits it gets (cue in PSU). It did not scare away Breneman (your beloved 5 star recruit/#1 TE nor Johnson (your beloved 4 Star) went with winning tradition with the attendant 100,000 plus crowd and meaningful games against BIG opponents irrespective of the fact PSU struggles to win the conference title. Did they do this because of the way HCPC and Co. recruits or is it because they saw PSU as better option as a football program? For me the answer is the latter and for you it is the former. What is the rational answer in light of Pitt not being in a good conference, losing to MAC and Div 1A schools and not have any real impact nationally…….Pitt itself and not HCPC alone. Pitt inherited him via the Pitt admin, HCPC inherited a program which has not seen glory since the days of Marino and Green.

It’s the epitome of a “building process”.

Start recruiting, instill your knowledge, your teaching abilities.

Try to win a few games. Get people excited.

Then, build up your recruiting a little more, go to the ACC, get some better teams in here, get some wins against them.

Get the recruiting up the next notch. Can’t do it overnight. Not even the recruiting.

The real barometer is the team’s play on the field. You can have higher, lower any stars on the squad but if they do not produce the star rating is meaningless. It does not matter what kind of stars the team has……I am not the coach and you are not either. I just want Pitt to be a national player once again. How long has HCPC been here, going on 6 months. The fact of that alone should temper the hopes of high stars right off from a novice HC but not in PC’s case.

The funny thing about it is that you cannot do anything about except come down on the coaches’ star ratings. Rivetted indeed…

Frankin what did wanny do with those better classes. Did he win the outright BE championship…No. Did Pitt gain any extra prestige with those better classes in respect to big time recruits…No. He** the team quit on him his last year. Great as the so-called recritinator but sucked at game day coaching and player development.

It is moot to say his classes were better than PSUs because he had the best classes in the BE and flopped every time when it counted. Better classes mean didley when you lose to MAC/Div 1A schools and cannot even win an outright coference conference championship in the weakest BCS conference. It is moot just as it is moot to judge a first year HC on a team that has been through so many coaches the last 3 years.

and chryst is a game day coach so is dave could recruit for chryst we would win every thing.
but that does not change the fact that at this point it looks as if chryst needs help with recruting why should you be mad over that it is not looking like that is his strong point that does not mean i dont like him or that i want him to fail it just means he might need help with recruting .

The only thing that bothers me more than losing a prized recruit is poor grammar, especially if you are a Pitt alum. Moreover, we lost a recruit in the summer, not a game in the fall.

Frankcan you miss the obvious points that PC is not DW just as Pitt is not PSU. Your point is premature to say the least. Dave was the son who came home to Pitt, talked of its glory days, winning championships and sending players to the pros. Poor PC only said the program will strive to be the best we can be both players and coaches. He made no proclamations about future glory or championships. He understood it is all about results on the field.

The knock on Chryst was always his recruiting. He’s a great guy, execellent mind, but could never land a HC job despite plenty of interviews because of this fact. It’s not new. Dokish is a great read and I have to agree with him. Pitt will never get over “the hump” or “return to glory” until they can recurit in their own backyard. We will, in all likelyhood, be an average football team for the next several years. The only thing that will change that is the talent level. Great football minds will only win you so many games. To compete at a high level constantly requires very good to execellent athletes. A huge scandal at PSU to go along with a new coach…yet their fans don’t have to be patient because they are getting good recruits. When will things change for the better at Pitt…when??? Sigh. Some days I tell myself I should just stop paying attention to this program because it is so frustrating. I want to buy season tix, I REALLY do, but not until something changes…and there are no signs that it will in the short term.

Well…even if this does turn out to be a down year for recruiting…and I think the jury is still out on that, though it hasn’t exactly been going great…one down year isn’t going to break the program. Two or three bad years on the other hand…

I once worked for a healthcare organization that paid a bit less than our peers. The organization had and continues to have a terrific reputation for service to its clients, well deserved. This wasn’t always the case. Due to the salary constraints and a less than stellar reputation in the early years it was rarely possible to bring in new staff who were stars. However it was led by a truly exceptional leader who understood that we could hire people with unremarkable credentials who who were highly motivated, committed to doing a good job, able and eager to learn and to put the team effort way ahead of self. It worked and when the first leader left his deputy took over, accelerated the progress and the organization became nationally respected and recognized, still with lower paid staff than many peer organizations. It continues in this vein today. Ok as with most analogies, this isn’t perfect. It is close however. HCPC deserves a chance and we the fans are likely to be rewarded as are the players. May I suggest that those of you ready to lead the charge with the torches and pitchforks put them away for a couple of years at least. Let’s enjoy the ride for a while and see where it takes us. Talk to you guys and gals after I get back from the beach. (Oops, are any of this group female? Are there any women who would want to be involved with the likes of us in this forum!? No need to admit it.)

I think there are those out there with un-realistic expectations. Don’t be too quick to pull the trigger on HCPC until you see what he produces on the field. Pitt has been bad mouthed here and in the news due to DW, the Miami Mistake, and TG. You had two down years in recruiting and two bad years on the field.

If you were a stud football player – why would you want to play for Pitt versus any B10 team? Your answer may change in a few years, but right now a B10 team is a better option. Like it or not – this has nothing to do with recruiting.

I have become convinced that either a lot of immature adults or teenagers post on Pitt sites. How else do explain the irrational, vitriol laced words against the current HC whom never has coached one game for Pitt or any other university. Forgive me for saying this but some of you come across like spoiled ranting children. It makes no sense. Why, what the hay are you spoiled about!!! Pitt football has not won anything of significance for 30+ years, yeah that’s right 30+ years.

agreed Kenny. Pitt has not been significant since the mid to late 70’s and early 80’s. additionally, the last national championship Pitt won before 1976 was in 1937. Pitt loses recruits to penn state because of their more recent success (barely) and the various other reasons people have pointed out, even as screwed up as they are from the top on down.

With that being said, i believe we as fans need to give this coaching staff a chance and our support!

PSU hasn’t won a national championship since the mid-80s. The B1G looks like it is back to The Big 2 OSU & Mich and The Little 8 or so.
