The good news. Pitt basketball continues to do well off the court with the student part.

For the second consecutive year, the University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball program received Public Recognition from the National Collegiate Athletic Association for ranking among the nation’s top-10 percent of all 336 men’s basketball squads based on its Academic Progress Rate. Announced by the NCAA on Thursday, the honor takes into account academic progress, graduation and retention rates over a four-year period between the 2007-08 and 2010-11 academic years.

Pitt and Notre Dame are the only two Big East men’s basketball programs ranked among the nation’s top-10 percent in APR score in each of the last two years. Over the last 11 seasons, Pitt has led the league in overall wins (295), league wins (129), NCAA Tournament appearances (10) and conference titles (six).

The Academic Progress Rate is a measure of classroom performance related to all participating NCAA Division I athletic programs. It is considered to be the NCAA’s “real-time” snapshot of academic progress, graduation and retention. Schools who fail to reach the NCAA’s minimum score can receive penalties that include loss of scholarships, public admonishment, restrictions on practice and competition and even expulsion from the NCAA.

Under the direction of four-time National Coach of the Year Jamie Dixon and Director of Academic Support Services Mike Farabaugh, the Pitt Basketball program has consistently ranked among the best Big East Conference performers in the APR. During Dixon’s nine-year tenure, over 80 percent of his men’s basketball players have graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. The Panthers have also earned a Team Academic Achievement Award for Most Improved Academic Team in 2004, 2006 and 2008.

“Graduating student-athletes will always be the No. 1 priority for our program,” Dixon said. “Once again, this is a tremendous honor for our university and a great reward for all of the hard work and dedication that our players have put into their studies.”

No worries about facing a post-season ban like UConn is having to face this year.

Now the bad. There’s a big hole in the non-con.

Pitt is still searching for a nonconference home game to replace the spot it held for the SEC-Big East Challenge before the Panthers found out last week that they were not going to be invited to the event. Pitt has to make the right choice with this game because their home schedule lacks sizzle, let alone top 25 teams. The Panthers must play a team that will be a conference champ contender rather than a team that has a name, but won’t be an NCAA tournament team and comes from a power conference.

It also lacks a good RPI position. I said it when it happened, and I repeat. Coach Jamie Dixon screwed up by believing Pitt was going to take part in the SEC-Big East Challenge. Especially when you consider how limited the number of “good” teams there were in the SEC that would be useful for Pitt. I would still love to see Dixon pull a rabbit out of the hat — and land a fine “screw you” blow to the Big East — by setting something up with Missouri.

Pitt may have to swallow hard to get a quality opponent at Pitt. It may even have to do a home-and-home with a non-power conference team to get them to the Pete at this point. Perhaps with Gonzaga? St. Mary’s? VCU? Memphis? Dare I say, UNLV?

Good story, one more reason to take pride in the ‘Ol Alma Mater. But I can do without the throw-away line about academics being their #1 priority.

Dixon should find out if Gardner-Webb has an opening in their schedule. I hear they like to help Pitt out when they have a scheduling problem!

Comment by HbgFrank 06.15.12 @ 12:42 pm

how about WVU? If they want to renew the BB series, here’s their chance

Comment by wbb 06.15.12 @ 12:49 pm

Too bad Syracuse relented and are going to play Arkansas.

Could have done a home and home with Syracuse for two years. Out of conference games, just to stick back to the BE.

How about a favor from one of our new brothers in the ACC???

Comment by Dan 06.15.12 @ 1:00 pm

P.S. The commisioners of the conferences and ND’s commish started the “new BCS” meeting this week, with their final report to go to the presidents on the 26th or so.

First word out this am, is, no four team playoff, back to the “and one”.

Big 12-SEC, can’t agree with the Big 10-Pac 12.

Big12-SEC wants conference champs involved, Big10-

SEC wants top 4 teams.

So, fans are gonna get screwed out of a playoff again. If it stands. They have meetings again next week I think.

What a bunch of whores.

Didn’t Pitt suspect Mizzou of tampering with Birch, therefore restricting any possible transfer there? I can’t remember how that actually unfolded in the end. If so, I wouldn’t foresee a non-con game set up with them.

Lets play Penn St 2 for 1 or WVU home and home

Great pieceon Capra, wbb. Thank you for giving us fans something to think about OTHER THAN the intrigues of the BCS, NCAA and the SEC-Big 12-ACC melodramas. Would YOU like a job on the PG sports desk? Rev. George from Columbus P.S. I meant, of course, CAPRARA!!!

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 06.15.12 @ 2:59 pm

Rev George, FWIW, any comedy piece FROM Capra (Frank) would be an even greater relief than the NCAA melodramas

Comment by wbb 06.15.12 @ 3:45 pm

I don’t care where they rank academically. Just get us a championship! I don’t expect college basketball players to design a space shuttle.

Dish…then follow kentucky.

Here’s an idea, Pitt still looking for non-con game cause The Big East Sucks? Then schedule Butler or VCU, I mean didn’t they make final four? I know their not a “power conference” team but they are decent enough.

PLUS, you continue series against butler from NCAA and CBI tourney. See? Win-win! Butler gets a marquee game, ESPIN gets it’s storyline, and Pitt gets a decent game.

Hey! Maybe I should put in my resume for Big East Commish?

Comment by Lou Gagliardi 06.15.12 @ 6:37 pm

It might be ‘a bridge too far’ but what about a PAC 12 team or Gonzaga? I wouldn’t mind seeing us play UCLA again. But any western team would provide us with some nice exposure recruiting-wise.

Comment by Shawn 06.15.12 @ 6:49 pm

I think we should play Washington State again…and again…and again.

Comment by steve1 06.15.12 @ 7:51 pm

Zach challingsworth commits to pitt. Travon chapman has pitt in his top 3 and is announcing july 1st.

As for the bb schedule, i desperately want pitt to work out a big time game. I want pitt to play somebody elit. Make it happen!!!

Comment by Pk 06.15.12 @ 8:26 pm

what abought a away game with some one tough just for the rpi i know we want a home game but some times it wont work out the way we want

Comment by FRANKCAN 06.15.12 @ 8:56 pm

Frankcan, that would make too much sense! Could have done the same for FB but instead we get Gardner Webb.

Comment by HbgFrank 06.15.12 @ 11:54 pm

I hear HACC is looking for some action.

Comment by Shawn 06.16.12 @ 1:10 am

How ’bout a home and home with Arizona?? It is a natural and Coach Miller will be happy to show off his rising Wildcats to his home folks. Also, an aside to wbb: good one on Frank Capra. You’ve got a sense of humor among your other senses. Rev. George from Columbus

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 06.16.12 @ 8:02 am

They won’t do an away game. They had the slot open for a home game and will replace it that way. In the administration’s minds they will rank $$ over RPI standing for the end of the season. In recent years I would have opposed this but I can’t say I blame them for next year. They’ll be paying a $5 million exit fee or more and need all the revenue generation they can get. At the end of the day it’s a business decision. Pitt has historically played a rather soft preseason schedule to offset the Big East. SEC, ACC Pac 12 and Big 10 teams have a much softer conference schedule and get away with more difficult out of conference schedules. Even with Pitt’s lousy out of conference schedules, they generally crack the top 25 strength’s of schedule rankings…Can’t say I’m real concerned. This team won’t be playing for 1 seed in the tourney anyways…more likely 3,4,5.
