Blue-Gold Scrimmage Open Thread

You don’t know how much I wish I was heading to Pittsburgh right now.

An interment coupled with the fact that my wife’s family don’t really drink. Wheeeeee.

So, for those at the tailgates and scrimmage, please leave your thoughts and opinions on what you see.

Extra note, this quote from Andrew Taglianetti is fantastic.

Chryst, like most coaches, gathers his players around him and addresses them after every practice. He occasionally becomes loud and animated but never overstays his welcome.

“(His speeches) are a fraction of the time compared to last year,” Taglianetti said. “He keeps it short and simple. He kind of gets right to the point, which is good for us. It’s not this overextended lecture about everything that goes on in your life. That’s kind of a knock on the previous regime.”

You mean every moment in football is not a metaphor for your life?

/worldview shatters

Now that’s funny.

I liked Fraud’s very 1st use of the “going in to halftime rah rah”. By the 2nd time, “Who is this guy kidding?”

i was hoping too hear some thoughts pos/neg. on the scrimmage

Comment by teezy 04.14.12 @ 4:33 pm

I liked most of what I saw. Let’s get this out of the way early…Tino was the 3rd best QB on the field. I caught (sort of) one of his pass that went thru Streets hands and out of the endzone. A few bounces later, but look for me on TV.

Anderson IS a field general, has presence and good foot speed. Myers played well especially his deep throws…just beauties! He is a classic drop back QB. Tino trys too hard and can’t read the defense and is too slow to rely on reactions. His pick (tags took it to the house) would have made Heinz field an outdoor insane asylum I watched from the opposite end zone and it was terrible at any level of play.

95 is friggen quick afoot! Donald is a man! Mason is an inspiration. Carswell is cut. Vinoli has nose for the football.

The best aspect was the discipline with which they played. This team is organized, calm and in control. I was on the field and there was no chatter, panic or confusion.

Tackling was very good. Dline shined. The D line coach was a hoot. Lots of mild vulgarities, never quiet but flat out funny.I want to play for him.

Harper looked very very good.

RBs were solid, not spectacular but that is also a function of the Oline.

Oline wasnt weak, but it wasn’t strong either. Apart from Street letting one go thru his hands, wide outs were good. Cam shined IMO and is acting like a senior!

Coaching staff is calm..none of this running around like the ship is sinking.

Discipline and depth..lots of depth in the secondary and d line.

I will watch tomorrow.

Thank you,SFPITT!!! I arrived back in Columbus from a month in Tucson, anxiously awaiting tghe “Spring Game”. There wasn’t a game, just a sctimmage. It was pouring in Ohio so I took a “rain check”/ Frustrating tghat there was no tv coverage and that there was no on going report from the PG. But, SFPITT came through. Hey, you can write!! But, who is HARPER? He looked good, eh, but, whar does he play and where is he from? Rev. George in Columbus.

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 04.14.12 @ 5:56 pm

Good crowd on hand today. Here’s my take on what I saw. I completely agree with SFPITT about the coaches. They were INVOLVED but ion a very positive way. I loved Booby Engram’s interactions with the receivers as they were leaving the field after a play. It was encouraging BUT also an opportunity to coach. Defense looks very good especially the D-Line. Donald will be huge for us next year. As for the Offense I REALLY think having the tight ends on the line helps the effectiveness of the O-Line. They did a pretty good job considering the strength of the D-Line and Linebackers. I’m thinking Youngstown State and Gardner-Webb will be overwhelmed but VTech…Not so much. Running backs looked good. Receivers missed a few but made a couple nice catches.

Quarterback was very interesting. Tino looked better than last season but Rev George would have been an improvement at QB after that debacle. (No offense Rev G). Tino threw a decent ball but many of the throws were not in the right spots. He had the sense to throw the ball away a couple times when pressured but I was disappointed in the quality of play. I thought Anderson was everything that SFPITT says he was. He took command and seems to have no fear or hesitation out there. His problem is that I’d be surprised if he’s 5’8″ and he seems to have a tough time getting the ball over the BIG Boys. He is fleet of foot and had a couple nice scrambles.

Myers blew me away. He had a beautiful touchdown pass of 40+ yards and the throw was right on the money. Damn!!! It was great to see someone throw the ball down the field! As a matter of fact, I saw a lot of throws right on the money from this guy. Yeah, he missed a few against a decent defense but they all did. A friend I sat in the stands with thought the same thing. He impressed the tar out of me and if the coaches were looking, he might be REAL competition for Tino this summer. I missed the first 9 minutes and the last 3 due to traffic and commitments but that’s my humble opinion.

Comment by SFPitt 04.14.12 @ 6:29 pm

If myers had the work ethic to match his deep ball hed be a great college qb. Thats not the case, sadly. Obviously i disagree with sfpitt when he says pitts d line is deep. They only have 4 interior linemen on the roster, one of which is injured right now. I just hope the qb situation works out well. If it does and injuries dont desimate the team, pitt has a shot to be a very good team

Comment by Pk 04.14.12 @ 6:33 pm

I think going back to a pro-style offence will be a good move for all involved. The offensive linemen will be playing in the manner more in keeping with their talents and they won’t be hung out to dry. Also there will be tight ends to help on the edge and a fullback to chip on pass rushers when necessary. I thought the clips from practice showing the work on technique with the offensive linemen and emphasising staying on the balls of their feet will pay dividends. The staff is keeping it simple and making sure the players have good technique.

Comment by Justinian 04.14.12 @ 6:38 pm

How abought that in a some thing like a game tino looks so so becuse it is not pratice
and myers looked great and better than tino may be myers is not a pratice player thats ok i would rather have game player.
and anderson good qb if only he were 4 inchs taller
but if myers looked this good and tino starts you KNOW WHAT EMel is going to say i can hear him now and i may start thinking he is right maybe.

Comment by Frankcan 04.14.12 @ 6:43 pm

And, my gratitude as well to The Hagenm Pk and especially to Josh Stickles. I have enoogh now to excite my old Pitt cronies in Denver and Datona. Whay a difference to be informed. And, yes, U do remember Kevin Harper. I think Pitt will be pretty good, come Sept. Rev. George from Columbus

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 04.14.12 @ 6:50 pm

PKif you go back and read his post myers was hiting on his short and med passes as well what you do in a game is more impertent than pratice
what you are posting is what they said abought pratice but with there own eyes they are telling you what they saw today so forget abought a practice report and listen to the game report.

Rev George…Kevin Harper…kicked one from 45 or so down the pipe with 15 yards to spare.

With Red Zone QB play questionable, field goals will be critical!

I echo comments from The Hagen. Donald could start anywhere in the country including several pro teams.

Comment by SFPitt 04.14.12 @ 7:02 pm

pk — did you attend the scrimmage?

Read the Pantherlair link…thanks wbb. Good sounding news overall and happy to hear about the top performers. I love how when Tino does well he refers to himself in the first person, but when he f#cks up, its always “We” or “You”…as in, ‘We need to do better’, or ‘You need to score in the red zone’. He’s not a stand up guy in this regard, and that’s why his teammates don’t pick him up after he gets jackhammered into the ground by a d-lineman and why, along with his sub-standard talent, the ABT faction is so consistently annoyed by and tired of him. No mystery here fellas.

Comment by Matt N. 04.14.12 @ 7:53 pm

So Tino goes 13 of 27 for 147 against the ones and Myers goes 10 of 16 for 167 against the twos. I wonder what Myers would have done against the ones? Tino against the twos? Hope Myers gets has act together this offseason and decides to really come in and challenge Tino. HTP.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 04.14.12 @ 8:06 pm

Steven Adams OWNS the boards.

Comment by steve1 04.14.12 @ 8:29 pm

Sounds like the QB situation could still be up in the air. Will be an intersting summer to see who shows up in August.

FYI, Steve Adams on ESPN now. Got some decent minutes in the first half. My first time seeing him and I’m impressed with his skill set and athleticism. He knows how to play. Doing good things against elite talent.

Comment by CnorwoodAZ 04.14.12 @ 8:44 pm

Adams had some downs, but mostly ups tonight. He actually won the game for the West by his last tip.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by steve1 04.14.12 @ 9:09 pm

Then again, Tino got to work with the first team offense and Myers with the second team, so kinda balances out…as these things are planned I imagine.

Comment by Matt N. 04.14.12 @ 9:41 pm

I liked what I saw from Adams. Although not flashy, he will fill a massive void. Good court awareness decent hands, not getting pushed around. No hops. Would benefit from staying a second year.

Some real high flyers in the game. Shabazz Muhammed was awesome, really goes to the hoop hard. Looks like Howland back on top soon.

Comment by gc 04.14.12 @ 9:49 pm

Adams skills are ridiculous. He runs the floor. His hands are excellent. He can pass and he can shoot. He is also a tough, physical, smart player. However, I do agree that two years at Pitt would help his overall game because his offensive game is well ahead of his defensive game from what I saw tonight.

Comment by HbgFrank 04.14.12 @ 10:30 pm

Today was my first venture to a spring game. Took my step daughter and had a complete blast. The on-field activities were great. Got pictures with many players and shook hands with coach Chryst. The interaction between players and kids were great to see. Chryst was personable and seemed like the guy you’d want to drink a beer with, not buy a car from.
As for the game, Tino was in mid season form. Myers throws a great deep ball. Anderson has game, but is a little too small.
D-line was great. First team secondary great. Solid hits on D. Bennett looked great running the ball. Ifell looks good at wideout.
Great seeing alumni there. Fitz, Polite, Lewis, Baldwin.
Pumped up for Fall. HTP!

Comment by Hacky3 04.14.12 @ 10:57 pm

Harper hit 2 (yes 2) field goals from 48 yards out and there was room to spare. This guy can flat out kick the ball,

FranCan, Myers was hitting the short and intermediate patterns as well. Very impressive. I play a lot of tennis and he reminds me of the guy who warms up rough but gets everything in when it counts.

Comment by The Hagen 04.14.12 @ 10:59 pm

Anderson is the same height as Sunseri from what I saw, and I did not see him have a problem with anything that was caused by his size. The kid moves around better than either Sunseri or Meyers and can throw the ball. IMO he’s a nice QB who will only get better. Could he get hurt … sure, but that’s always the case. I am old enough to remember Dave Havern …. one of PITT’s better QB at 5′-8 or 9, and this kid is the same type … a winner. Anyway, Bennett really runs strong and was hard to bring down. Some of the other runners were also quick on cuts and gained extra yards. Overall, it was an encouraging showing. I have to admit that I was excited last year at this time too … so who knows; but it will be fun to see this team grow. I think they have a lot of the pieces in place to be a surprise … a good one this time.

Comment by fuzzy69 04.14.12 @ 11:55 pm

Adams looked good. Right when he entered the game he got a defensive rebound, made the outlet, sprinted to the front rim, posted up, caught the pass, drop step dunk.

SFPitt really summed up the improvement on the field well from what I saw. But I liked the format and the venue too. Very fun, informal and even kid friendly. I wound up wishing I had brought my kids to the morning workshop. And even if the crowd wasn’t huge, it was nice being around the most diehard Panther fans. It’s surprsing how many familiar faces I saw from Heinz Field.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 04.15.12 @ 8:12 am

Before you guys jump all over new pitt commit aaron reese for being unranked right now, let me say this. At wisconsin chryst and rudolph hade a ton of all american linemen, almost none of which were rated highly. These guys know what they want in their linemen so i trust them on this one.

Comment by Pk 04.15.12 @ 8:25 am

Boy was the host on the blog radio lethargic. Duds for Q, and no personality.

Comment by Justin 04.15.12 @ 8:55 am

Wow, both PGH papers left no doubt that Sunseri is still the biggest question mark on the team.

13 for 27 and an interception for a touchdown on an errant pass. More overthrown balls. Sounds familiar.

Boy, I hope the other guys take their off season opportunity seriously. It is painfully obvious that there is not much upside with Sunseri.

I think we will see a lot of 8-10 in the box.

Comment by gc 04.15.12 @ 9:51 am

About the comments about Trey Anderson’s size, remember, in the college game there have been a lot of successful shorter quarterbacks. I was at the Pitt-Boston College game when Pitt was blowing out BC and Doug Flutie came in the 2nd half. Former Pitt quarterbacks, Chris Jelic and Dave Havern wern’t big guys either. They both had mobility and could really throw the ball. I’m encouraged by what I’ve heard about Meyers as well. It’s a new start for everyone with a new coach, so let them play and see who emerges as the best man.

Comment by Justinian 04.15.12 @ 10:18 am

My 2 cents on steven adams: different sites list him as different heights – 6’10″/6’11”- the kid is every bit as 7 foot. He is much bigger now than he was in his youtube videos. When he was at ambridge he said he weighed 245, hes easily 255 now, maybe 260. He displayed great athleticism, strength, touch, and did a great job on the boards. He made some nice passes but i wouldnt look to much into the mistakes/lack of points. These all star games arent exactly center-friendly.

Comment by Pk 04.15.12 @ 10:28 am

I was out of town yesterday and I didn’t have the opportunity to attend the Blue Gold game at North Hills. It sounds like the more intimate setting was a good idea for all involved. I like the idea of having the game at different high schools in the area. It will create a buzz in the local communities and it’s convientient to attend. I would like to see next year’s scrimage at high school in the South Hills at Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, or Bethel, or east at Gateway, Penn Hills or Woodland Hills. I think it will pay dividends in the years to come.

Comment by Justinian 04.15.12 @ 10:30 am

Right on PK. And Steven was the only playing D. Right up Jamie’s alley.

Comment by steve1 04.15.12 @ 10:30 am

I agree PK – this new commit fits the Chryst mold. Tall, not overly bulky, and of course unheralded. I’m just excited that he head the letters OT next to his name.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 04.15.12 @ 10:41 am

Starting at right (offensive) tackle yesterday — #63, Justin Virbitsky. Didn’t see anything of Ricketts, but there were a lot of players shuttling in and out, so might have missed him. After Myers’ TD toss, he came to the sideline with a huge smile; pro-style QB for a pro-style offense. Didn’t see one option play, but I left a little early and might have missed that too. Loved seeing the coaches interact with the players, you can see how much the players like playing for them.

Comment by PetePitt73 04.15.12 @ 12:18 pm

Agree Justinian. There were a ton of North Hills sweatshirts there, maybe just people from the community who came out to see the commotion and not pure Pitt fans. It can’t hurt. And it got me to a stadium I’ve never seen before.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 04.15.12 @ 1:06 pm

I went thru Chambersburg last week and while I didn’t see our recruit, I like him already.
That is PSU turf for sure and to grab a recruit from there early on is damn good.
Especially since his name will be preceded by the words “Pitt recruit” all summer and Fall.

Comment by SFPitt 04.15.12 @ 1:21 pm

with all this uncertainty @ qb.. any chances chad V comes in and backs up.. or even starts (at some point).. granted he has never set foot on a college field… but is he that kind of talent ?

Comment by snala the panther 04.15.12 @ 2:30 pm

Guys – it was a blast there yesterday and I thought it was much better than having it at Heinz.

I posted a long article just now regarding some Spring Camp questions we wanted answered in the scrimmage…

I told you Myers’ deep ball was amazing, didn’t I. I’m glad everyone had a chance to see those two throws in person as that is what people have been seeing at the practices from Myers.

Comment by Reed 04.15.12 @ 2:50 pm

pk. Austin was listed as 7′ and Adams looked to be at least 1″ taller … more likley Austin isn’t 7′ than Adams is 7’2

Adams looked a little flat-footed at times but you can definitely see a lot of promise

Comment by wbb 04.15.12 @ 8:16 pm

all the talk abought tino looking good in pratice who cares if you read the pgh papers the trib said myers was the best looking QBon the field
so i dont care who looks good in practice but who is good in games
