Meeting Up With Butler

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 9:37 am

There is no way to claim there will be any measure of revenge that can be extracted from this game. There just isn’t. So, no matter what any hack writer tries to concoct for a storyline — forget it. Just as beating Vandy in some regular season or preseason tournament after Barry Goheen could never have made up for 1988. This is as much a notice for any sports writer who comes here looking to gauge Pitt fan feelings for some storyline, as it is for everyone else. There is no revenge here, because there is no equivalency.

Not that we can ignore last year. No. That isn’t going to happen.

Butler’s Andrew Smith and Ronald Nored spent part of Tuesday viewing footage from last year’s NCAA tournament game against Pittsburgh.

They still can’t believe what they saw. The foul at midcourt, the missed free throw, the inexplicable foul on Matt Howard and finally Howard’s free throw to win it.

The final 1.4 seconds of that game will go down as one of the craziest finishes in tourney history. Now, 367 days later, Butler and Pittsburgh have a chance to do it all over again Wednesday night in the College Basketball Invitational tournament semifinals.

“I guess it took about 20 minutes to figure out what was going on because I really didn’t know,” Bulldogs center Andrew Smith said after looking again at the tape.

Sorting it all out is confusing, even now…

Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking. Too early to start drinking.

Onto other aspects.

Butler has apparently expanded its hoirzons and looks to be heading to the A-10 (no, I’m not proud of making that joke). Not sure if that will make it into the telecast banter, but worth noting.

I know I was confused after the blowout of Princeton, that Malcolm Gilbert only played a couple minutes with the scrubs — especially when Coach Dixon admitted after the Wofford game that he should have played him along with others some more. We do get an explanation. Albeit one, that is once more a bit Wannstedtian Coachspeak.

“J.J. Moore (18 minutes), I should have gotten more minutes for him. Both times we subbed him in, he was waiting on the sidelines for awhile. Travon is probably as healthy as he’s been getting back.”

Injuries and matchups limited the minutes of three freshmen — guard John Johnson, center Malcolm Gilbert and redshirt Cameron Wright.

Johnson missed practice with back spasms, and Wright was bothered by a wrist injury. The 6-11 Gilbert would have been matched up on Princeton center Mack Darrow, who went 3 for 3 from 3-point range in the first half.

Apparently dragging Zanna or Taylor out the perimeter was a better idea? To be fair, Zanna did have a really good game.

Now the article does note that Gibbs and Robinson have played less than their season averages. More rest seems to have helped Woodall.

Coach Dixon also felt the need to continue defending Pitt playing in the CBI.

Dixon reiterated that “we are getting as much out of it as we can,” following a game that cost Pitt a $50,000 minimum ticket guarantee to the CBI. He said the practices have been as good as all season. With 3:20 left in the game and Pitt ahead by 15, a much-healthier Woodall was diving on the floor after a steal. There was no doubt the Pitt players are glad to keep playing.

“They’ve shown it in everything they’ve done, from practice, being there early to how we’ve come out and played from the start in both games,” Dixon said. “These guys wanted to play. They didn’t do what they wanted to do during the year. They felt like they disappointed themselves and each other.”

I had no problem with Pitt taking the CBI rather than just end the season after not getting an NIT bid. Maybe I’m just rationalizing it. Maybe I’m just hoping this is the case. But I am of the opinion that the CBI is actually better for the guys coming back than the NIT would have.

The season was humbling enough for them. But then to find out that they weren’t considered one of the best 32 leftovers. That stings. That whatever this team has accomplished. Whatever it’s reputation has been over the past 10 years — it meant nothing — because of the way they have played and lost this year.

They have seen extremely few fans show up for the first couple of games. They may have seen what happens. If they use it to drive them for next year. If they realize how thin the line can be between the winning and losing. Then hopefully it pushes them a little harder in the offseason. Hopefully it is a reminder.

The game is 8pm on HDNet,

Hope they win but must admit that in the 2 previous CBI games, I had no idea what they did until I logged into the PG the following day .. and probably won’t know about tonight’s game until tomorrow.

Chas, never too early to start drinking when you mention Barry Goheen. A moment I’ll never be able to forget – up there with Sid Bream scoring on Barry Bonds. Or Andrew Janocko fumbling the snap against Cincy and Pike/Gilyard cinching the deal. Suddenly the CBI invite is not a disappointment!

if you think Pitt has it bad, TJ McConnell is transferring out of Duquesne

Comment by wbb 03.21.12 @ 10:06 am

TJ McConnell is leaving Duquesne to play at a “higher” level. He has been given his release, but Mike White (an idiot of the highest order) does not write whether there are restrictions placed on the release.

I suspect he wants to play for PSU, but that is just a guess.

Comment by SFPitt 03.21.12 @ 10:08 am

PSU has 3 players transferring out so it would be wide open for him

Comment by wbb 03.21.12 @ 10:20 am

For me, being in the TDBanknorth Garden, watching Scottie Reynolds go coast to coast was the worst sports moment.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 03.21.12 @ 10:20 am

I always raise my glass when the numbers 13 and 9 or 12 and zero appear.

Comment by TX Panther 03.21.12 @ 10:37 am

Yeah, this can’t bode well for Everhart. According to the PG, Duquesne is also losing guard Mike Talley to transfer.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.21.12 @ 10:44 am

Barry Goheen, Butler, Scottie Reynolds, Sid Bream, Andrew Janocko…where is the David Volek reference in this thread to make my torture complete? Screw drinking this early…this thread is going to send me in search of a heroin dealer. Pronto.

Comment by ECH 03.21.12 @ 11:00 am

Janocko is now the Offensive QC Coach for Tampa Bay Bucs .. following Schiano as he was a grad asst at Rutgers last year.

Comment by wbb 03.21.12 @ 11:08 am

I take no joy from Duquesne’s woes. Everhart has a lot of players leave his teams.

If I were Duquesne, I would hire Lombardi (the coach at IUP) and put an end to this nonsense. But Duquesne is even more strange than Pitt…having had decades of success, they are more arrogant than ever. Of course, those decades occured before Woodstock, but that is a blink of an eye to them.

Comment by SFPitt 03.21.12 @ 11:42 am

I heard on the fan the stipulations on the release are that T.J. McConnell can’t play for Pitt or Robert Morris. I have no idea if that is really the case or not.

Comment by Justinian 03.21.12 @ 12:08 pm

Talking about Duquesne, I remember during Paul Evans time at Pitt, when John Calpari was an assistant at Pitt, a friend told me that if Duquesne didn’t hire Calpari they were nuts. Well they didn’t and Calpari later took a job at UMass and the rest is history. Duquesne hasn’t been in the NCAA tournament since 1970, when they had the Nelson twins, Mickey Davis, Jarret Durram and Mike Barr, and that was 42 years ago.

Comment by Justinian 03.21.12 @ 12:19 pm

Duquesne actually made it (NCAA) in I beleive 1977 when Norm Nixom led them to a victory in their conference tourney…were only a .500 team that year…I beleive they lost to VMI??? in first round of NCAAs.

Comment by steve 03.21.12 @ 12:23 pm

The loss to Nova was the worst, if only because it was the most recent. But also because an NCAA final four is a more rare accomplishment than any professional championship (just do the numbers considering the number of teams in the leagues). And because Pitt b-ball is my #1 team above even any of the pro teams.

and now i’m feeling chest pains and I need a drink and something to punch. Damn it. DAMN IT!!!!

Comment by PantherP 03.21.12 @ 12:27 pm

Yes. Duquesne coulda hired Coach Calpieri. The rest is history. A history full of vacated final four appearances and the knowledge that your coach is the kinda fella who if sh*t hits the fan will leave you holding the bag.

What I’m trying to say is Calipieri is a scumbag.

Comment by PantherP 03.21.12 @ 12:33 pm

Justinian – the Post-Gazette is also reporting that the release stipulates that McConnell cannot transfer to Pitt or Robert Morris. It didn’t sound like McConnell objected to this (not that he had much leverage), so I don’t think those schools were really on his radar.

Comment by Pantherman13 03.21.12 @ 12:42 pm

PantherP, yes he left a mess at UMass and Memphis. That’s why Calpari wasn’t considered at Pitt when Howland left. But when he was an assistant here, he brought in Brian Shorter, Shawn Miller, and a lot of other good players. He could recruit where ever he went. That’s something Duquesne despertely needs. I’m a Pitt guy and I haven’t really followed Duquesne basketball since I was in high school.

Comment by Justinian 03.21.12 @ 1:26 pm

Nasir will have a career game tonight to make up for last year.

Pitt 76

Butler 69

Comment by WLAT and the Big Beat 03.21.12 @ 1:55 pm

What’s going on down on the bluff? It seemed to me that Everhardt was bringing in some decent players but they don’t seem to stick for some reason. That’s too bad as my Duquesne friends have suffered much longer than we have.

Comment by The Hagen 03.21.12 @ 2:02 pm

Justinian — he does recruit well everywhere. Its his one (and maybe only) superior talent. Hiring him is, at almost any school, a high-reward/high-risk business. Except maybe at UK or somewhere else where the prestige of the school means he doesn’t need to use under-handed tactics.

Still, would be nice for Duquesne to be relevant for at least a few years — even if it means hiring a guy like that.

Comment by PantherP 03.21.12 @ 3:06 pm

Tempted to watch the game tonight, afraid to jinx them. Seems like they are better with nobody watching.

Comment by gc 03.21.12 @ 3:30 pm

The Key to a safe and sustained recovery is not living in the past. Mentally I have moved on…. Until you brought the ending to the game back up again ! Off the wagon I go.

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 03.21.12 @ 3:36 pm

The Scottie Reynolds loss was a dagger to the heart but the 1988 squad was loaded, and the road to the final four was cleared after #1 seed Arizona lost. The pain was also compounded by the level of the opponet (they were pounded the next round) and the fact that it took another 20 years for the talent level to get back to that level.

Comment by Chuck Morris 03.21.12 @ 3:38 pm

If I were a betting kind of guy I’d bet on Pitt tonight. Why? Like these last 2 games Jamie will let them play, have and even smile.

Which may actually be a great learning experience for Jamie.

Comment by steve1 03.21.12 @ 4:21 pm

oops, left out after “have,” “fun.”

Comment by steve1 03.21.12 @ 4:22 pm

I have heard repeatedly a rumor that Pitt has a 4th recruit for next year basically locked up, but can’t announce him until the season ends and they are able to excuse one of the current scholarship players. Anyone else anything along this line?

Comment by marcus of schaumburg 03.21.12 @ 5:17 pm

Macus, it’s Khem Birch.

Comment by Reed 03.21.12 @ 5:35 pm

sooo HDnet isn’t on comcast??

Comment by ClarkLotTgate 03.21.12 @ 5:59 pm

I haven’t been able to enjoy Norfolk State, Lehigh, or Ohio’s upsets this year as much as in other years, post Butler.
#BCSproblems
I hope Pitt embarrasses Butler tonight.

Comment by Rieur1114 03.21.12 @ 7:10 pm

I think HDNet is only on satellite
