Or… something.

Last week, Wisconsin linebackers coach Dave Huxtable publicly declined the offer to go with Paul Chryst and be the defensive coordinator at Pitt. This on the heels of TE Coach Joe Rudolph apparently going to be promoted (and get a bump in pay) to stay at Wisconsin.

Close the book on those guys and move on to other speculation and crazy rumors.

Weeelllllll….

Maybe there is a change of heart or something else. FootballScoop.com is once more reporting that Dave Huxtable is coming to Pitt as the DC.

That’s a rumor-mill site. Fun stuff, but you have to take it with a grain of salt. You never know when it is agent-driven bull or something else.

A Badger beat reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal, however

Yes, the same Joe Rudolph caught on camera doing some digging and snacking.

So things remain in flux. Enjoy.

UPDATE (2:47 pm): Here’s a full article.

But a UW source said Huxtable is leaving, presumably to join Chryst at Pitt.

The source said Huxtable may have wanted to keep the “party line” and keep things settled until after the Rose Bowl, which is why he may have given those contradictory statements.

Meanwhile, wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander could be headed to Arizona State, although that is not yet official, another UW source said.

That would fit in with the potential arrival of [Jay] Norvell, who also coaches the wide receivers at Oklahoma. He has been at Oklahoma since 2008 under coach Bob Stoops.

But if Bielema bypasses tight ends coach Joe Rudolph for the UW coordinator job, there is concern Rudolph might also leave for Pitt, according to multiple sources. Rudolph is close to Chryst and Bostad.

So, as always, stay tuned.

I’m really pretty ok with being Wisconsin east for a while

Comment by usd121 01.04.12 @ 2:10 pm

Well, if the report about Huxtable is true, that will put all the Bradley talk to end. Hey all I want is to see Paul Chryst get the people he’s comfortable with, in place, as soon as possible.
They need to solidify the recruiting class and bring any additional recruits that they while there is still time.

Comment by Justinian 01.04.12 @ 2:42 pm

If Huxtable is indeed the guy it would make sense that it hasn’t been announced. Out of respect to Keith Patterson they would obviously want to wait until after Saturday to make any kind of announcement. If Patterson were to be retained I think they would have announced that already.

Has anyone heard if there will be an OC? I know Chryst will be doing the playcalling but just wondering if someone would perhaps be an assistant OC??

Comment by Coach Ditka 01.04.12 @ 2:53 pm

Any recruiting being done by Coach Chryst?? I’d love to know who he’d try to get…………

Comment by mtoolmn 01.04.12 @ 3:06 pm

I would assume Bostad would be the “OC.” he was Running Game Coordinator and OL coach at Wisconsin

Comment by Tony C 01.04.12 @ 3:09 pm

my understaning is that Bostad is going to be the OC .. although I expect Chryst to call the plays.

I believe the DC hire will be pretty important

Comment by wbb 01.04.12 @ 3:13 pm

Really the great huxtable dc did you see a great defence at wisc?

Comment by 63Team 01.04.12 @ 4:16 pm

FWIW, he was only at Wisconsin for 1 year and he was the LB coach. He did a pretty good job as DC at UCF before that .. in fact, 2 years ago UCF won CUSA (not Tulsa) and held Georgia to 7 pts in a bowl game.

He has over 25 years coaching experience but only a few as DC .. so yes, the jury is probably ou (but we still don’t know for sure if he is coming)

Comment by wbb 01.04.12 @ 4:32 pm

Huxtable is among the coaches removed from the UW website listing current coaches.

SJ, great reporting

Comment by steve 01.04.12 @ 5:21 pm

he won linebacker coach of the year last year I think. Also, I don’t think you can blame huxtable for the rose bowl for 2 reasons. 1) he’s the lb coach, not dc and. 2) Oregon has done that to everyone except lsu. I will say this, Pitts going to need someone who can recruit some speed on defense and idk if an ALL big 10 staff is ideal for that. trust me, I love the hires of Chryst and bostad, but big 10 defenses aren’t ideal for play in the acc unless you’re Michigan State.

Comment by pk 01.04.12 @ 5:23 pm

Two of Huxtables LB’s were All Big 10 performers this season as reported by Brian Bennett and ESPN. The guy can coach but I agree with pk that he’ll need to recruit faster players for the ACC.

Comment by TX Panther 01.04.12 @ 5:26 pm

one thing that I hope doesn’t change in the future for Pitt is an elite defensive line. Pitts d line should be great next year if certain players cough cough shayne hale live up to potential. here’s Pitts probable d line: DE Brian Murphy 6’3″ 255 4 stars, DT Kaynin Moseley-Smith 6’3″ 295 4 stars, DT Aaron Donald 6’1″ 280 4 stars, DE TJ Clemmings 6’6″ 295 5 stars. clemmings has the physical tools to be an all American the question is, will he step up next year as a junior? I’ve just noticed that in the past few years, Pitt hasn’t landed any elite d linemen like they did continually under wanny. hopefully with a probable move back to a 4-3 they’ll land a few more top flight guys.

Comment by pk 01.04.12 @ 5:47 pm

As long as we get a good staff, can win a few games and get to a bowl game, then I’m happy

Chris Dokish on Panther’s Prey is reporting that in addition to Dave Huxtable, that Joe Rudolph may also be on the way. Wisconson’s head coach is trying to get an offensive coordinator from Oklahoma which means that, Rudolph,if he came to Pitt, would probably handle the offensive line. He is said to be the best recruiter on the current Wisconson staff.

Comment by Justinian 01.04.12 @ 6:09 pm

ok, I was listening to the fan and they were talking about Tim tebow. I need to get this off my chest. have u ever seen his commercial where he says “they all said I couldn’t be a college quarterback” ? I just want YOU all to not be fooled. I did some research on the 3 major recruiting websites to see how he was rated as a recruit. espn 5 star #1 qb, rivals 5 star #1 qb, scout 5 star #3 qb. he’s a liar. couldn’t be a qb my —

frankcan, I said nothing if politics or religion. I’ve made my point.

I think huxtable is a really solid dc hire if it’s true. dokish said on his blog that Joe Rudolph might also be coming to Pitt and he said that if it’s true, Rudolph and Haering would be a formidable recruiting tandem in PA

Zeise is reporting in the PG, that Huxtable has been hired by PC.

link to post-gazette.com

Comment by Emel 01.04.12 @ 7:19 pm

This is great, Hux has coached in the ACC before as a DC and very importantly has recruited down here.

It says a lot about PC that he’s able to bring these coaches from Wisky with him. I mean that is a program that has won the Big 10 the last two years and is a Top 10 type program. And has been a very good program since Alvarez went there in 1990.

Article also mentions that Joe Rudolph is still in play as well. Their recruiting coordinator.

Comment by Emel 01.04.12 @ 7:24 pm

Comment by wbb 01.04.12 @ 7:37 pm

man…does this mean Reed really has to kill someone???!! I mean DC was just speculation but it isn’t looking good for his “source”.

I am glad to see that FRANK has calmed down now that PC has started to name more quality assistants.

Comment by BCPITT 01.04.12 @ 7:37 pm

Looking over Wisky’s roster, they have 13 current players from Florida. With one being named…..

Aaron Henry.

This guy has to be on the UW baseball team as well

Comment by Emel 01.04.12 @ 7:38 pm

btw that wasn’t a shot @ FRANK. I was just joking because of how concerned he was about the fact that the staff wasnt all announced yesterday…I think PC had these guys lined up, but they made sure 1) they got through the Rose Bowl as Wisky guys and 2) they got a chance to talk to Wisky about potential promotions/salary bumps there.

Comment by BCPITT 01.04.12 @ 7:41 pm

I can’t claim to know as much about coaching or recruiting talent as most posters on this blog. I’m just a casual fan who wants my dear alma mater to be restored to respectability in football.

But the hiring of Paul Chryst and what seem to be quality assistants is getting me more excited by the day. I just have an overall feel that we are getting some real professionals at the helm and that the path is up from here.

I live in the DC suburbs but I’m getting ready to order my 2012 season tickets. One less yellow seat this fall!

Comment by BATR 01.04.12 @ 7:45 pm

TX PANTHER the one thing TG did in these last 2 classes was recrit speed not a lot of size at certain postions but a lot of speed.
which should help when we get to the ACC.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.04.12 @ 7:46 pm

Dodge also talked at length about Tino Sunseri and said that he expects to see Sunseri have one of his best games and mostly because, he’s spent the past month scrapping all the plays that Sunseri struggled with and has focused on putting Sunseri in good situations.

So I’m assuming here, ALL the pass plays have been scrapped. And PITT is going to run the Wishbone !….haha 🙂

Comment by Emel 01.04.12 @ 7:46 pm

BCPITT yes i am more mellow now likeing the look of things HAIL TO PITT

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.04.12 @ 7:52 pm

Agreed, BCPITT.

I really think a lot of the wait on coaches was both the Rose Bowl and letting the assistants sort things out. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy decision to leave home at a stable, successful program like Wisconsin without thoroughy examining your choices.

For Paul Chryst, I bet it was agonizing to want to start right away and even hire quickly while at the same time wanting to wait and see if you could land the guys you really wanted.

I think Rudolph will be a key hire. He recuited like a beast at Wisconsin.

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 01.04.12 @ 7:53 pm

I’m sharpening the knives as we speak but I still believe that Tomsula is going to be on staff.

I love the DC hire as much that it puts the silly Bradley to PITT rumors to rest then as it means we’re getting a good coach.

63Team – Wisky had this as their defensive standings in 2011:

Scoring defense – 6th nationally
Total defense – 8th
Passing defense – 22nd
rushing defense – 46th

I’ll take that at PITT any day.

Comment by Reed 01.04.12 @ 7:56 pm

OK SJ .. more investigative reporting required:

Rudolph is Pgh native but played at Wisc and coached there for 4 or 5 years. Is his wife a Pgh or Wisc native?

Comment by wbb 01.04.12 @ 8:02 pm

wow. step back and look at the coaches pitt has hired and other apparent hires. paul chryst-wisconsin, bob bostad-wisconsin, dave huxtable-wisconsin, johnathan smith-montana, jim tomsula-SF 49ers, ___ Haering-mt lebanon. if you just look at where, theyre from, the key positions theyve coached at, and the success theyve had or what they bring to the table, its not hard to see why so many people are getting excited about the future of the pitt program. i, for one, have bought into chrsyt about 90%. i will make my final decision for where i think pitt will be headED once i see the final recruiting class this february. yes i know none of the commits are his recruits but i think it will be a testament to how great of a recruiter he is if hes able to keep a class together after becoming coach just 4 weeks before the signing period AND adding quality names to the list

Comment by pk 01.04.12 @ 8:08 pm

listen….i don’t know to much about these guys.. but we’re gettn coaches from wisconsin….and that is fine with me!!…these guys win..and do it the right way…im excited!!…..lets go pitt

ESPN is reporting on the Big East Blog that Patterson is taking the DC job at Arkansas State, with former Auburn OC Gus Malzahn.

Interesting, good for him, getting away from Graham, maybe he was blindsided by him taking the Arizona State job.

Huxtable coming to Pitt:

Comment by Matt D 01.04.12 @ 9:27 pm

PITT is trending in the right direction and I for one am excited about the coaching situation. Winning makes local recruiting a lot easier so I am not too concerned on that front.

I am so glad that a few of the boosters talked some sense into the Chancellor and didn’t go with the Smiley recommendation again. Gents, it is going to work out well for Pitt.

Reed and Cahs, I dogged Todd Graham from day one because I did have some information on him and never waivered from that position. I will now support Coach Chryst because he will get the job done. Local recruits need to sign up because the new sheriff is in town. Will get the hogs from the north and the speed from the south! Buckle up fellas!

Comment by dhuffdaddy 01.04.12 @ 9:37 pm

Often new coaches like to keep at least 1 guy from the previous staff-although I don’t think the previous coach who I refuse to acknowledge did-any word on chryst keeping someone from current staff?

Comment by John 01.04.12 @ 9:37 pm

John, it’s not looking that they will keep anybody. Patterson will be off to Arkansas state and Chryst already has most of the positions filled that interim coaches used to be at.

Comment by pk 01.04.12 @ 9:43 pm

Wish Chryst was coaching on Saturday. I have to say, that in the many years I have read and participated in this blog, the coming of Chryst and Hux has created the most positive atmosphere and comments I can remember. I am a great believer that all things happen for a reason…Pitt is due for some good fortune…I agree …they got it!

Now, if we could only fix the basketball team….

Comment by Dan 72 01.04.12 @ 9:45 pm

I just read on Pitt Script, that with Huxtable coming to Pitt, Patterson signed to coach with Arkansas State, a Sunbelt Conference team, which will probably pay half of what he could have gotten at Arizona State.

Comment by Justinian 01.04.12 @ 9:47 pm

All I got to say is that Chryst had better keep one open spot for Tomsula or I’ll be ‘dogging’ him all year.

I too like the hires so far and think that when all the positions are filled we’ll be very happy with the results of thier work come LOI Day.

Speaking of which you know who the most valuable staff member is right now… Bob Junko as he’s been keeping it all together and has the info ready for the other coaches when they need to hit the recruiting trail.

Comment by Reed 01.04.12 @ 10:03 pm

INFO for you Patterson declined an offer from TG he has burnt his bridge for sure i wish him luck.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.04.12 @ 10:31 pm

I think Patterson’s decision to go to Arkansas St. is a strong referendum on the rest of the previous staff’s decision to follow Graham.

Apparently Graham’s dog and pony show not only fools universities, players and fans but his own staff coaches also.

Interesting that the man who knows him best doesn’t want anything to do with him any longer.

Comment by Reed 01.05.12 @ 7:14 am

Coach Chryst is building his coaching staff with experienced and proven talent. This maybe one of Pitt’s best coaching staff’s in years.

HTP!

Comment by MariettaMike 01.05.12 @ 7:33 am

Sometimes in life, you are friends or co-workers with some people, and you think, “they’re ok, a little odd, but, I guess they’re ok, I think”, then one day, they do something, and you say, “holy cow, I knew something wasn’t right, what a jerk”.

Good luck Coach Patterson.

Comment by Dan 01.05.12 @ 9:06 am

@PK, actually, regardless of stars or recruiting web sites, a lot of people did say, “he’ll never be a good quarterback”, because of his throwing motion. I remember lots of people on tv always saying that, and always talking about how bad his throwing motion was, and he’ll never make it.

A bathroom should never go out of style, that’s why it is best to furnish it with timeless pieces that perfectly match together. You do not need to mix and match separate items for your bathroom. A white bathroom suite would be the best decision for you.
