Class Held Together

“[Graham] could recruit commitment even if [he] couldn’t understand it” — 85mf

While waiting for the Chryst presser yesterday, a Twitter discussion broke out about how the Pitt recruiting class was handling all of this.

One of the remarkable things about this insanity of the past week plus, is that the rather quality recruiting class Pitt put together — stayed together. The players may have been recruited by Graham and many of the “mercenaries,” but they have hung tight with Pitt. Even before the decision on the next head coach was made, they were stating strong support to still come to Pitt.

This, of course, is in stark contrast to last year. When as soon as Wannstedt was fired, many of the recruits started looking elsewhere and reopening recruitment. Many factors in last year’s issues. One, Wannstedt was fired, so Pitt was the bad guy to the recruits. In their view, Pitt broke the commitment to the coaches — and by extension to them. The other was that many of those assistants who were cleared out of Pitt quickly landed elsewhere — especially in New Jersey. That made it easy for several to just switch commitments — especially since they had already been recruited by Rutgers and others in the East.

By contrast, all the departing coaches this year, headed for points in Arizona. Very, very different.

Chris Peak of PantherLair, also noted that the top recruits in Pitt’s class — Shell, Voytik, and other key recruits —  after the initial shock, decided that they were sticking with Pitt. But more importantly, they stayed in touch with the other recruits in the class to keep it together (Insider subs).

[Chris] Davis and his twin brother Demitrious (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown-Fitch) committed to Pitt during the summer and, like many of Pitt’s 19 commitments, the two remain committed. Included in that group are ESPNU 150 running back Rushel Shell and four-star quarterback Chad Voytik and four-star offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty.

“We sat down with Rushel Shell and Chad Voytik and Adam Bisnowaty from the class,” Chris Davis Sr., the twins’ father, said, “and we’re gonna stay 100 percent committed. We’re gonna keep this class together and see who comes in.”

At the very least, they prevailed upon them to mostly wait and see who was hired. There were some exceptions, but even then they hedged.

The Chryst hiring, has been met with strongly positive reviews. Guys reaffirming their commitment.

“I’ve been with Pitt all year,” Geter said via text message. “Not changing now.”

Last week, Geter spoke with a handful of Pitt commitments, including ESPNU 150 running back Rushel Shell, and all committed to sticking with the Panthers.

Geter does not know much about Chryst but is “dying to meet him.”

“Maybe he’s going to bring some excitement to the team,” Geter said. “[I have a] good feeling about him!”

Geter, a Western Pennsylvania product, committed to nearby Pitt in June. His teammate Deaysean Rippy, a four-star linebacker, is undecided but considering Pitt.

The recruits are happy, which is big.

So, from that respect the Paul Chryst is off to a strong start

Apparently this group of 17 and 18 year old kids could teach Fraud Graham a thing or two about loyalty, class and the meaning of the word committment. Good for them and great for Pitt!

another local recruit considering Pitt is JP Holtz,a TE from Shaler who decomitted from PSU. Wisconsin’s ofense is known to be very TE friendly … which probably was major factor for Brock DeCicco transferring there. Thus, I can’t see where the Chrust’s hiring will hurt in this situation

I’m excited by the leadership on display before these recruits even get on campus. Could be one of those special classes that takes a program to the next level just on will alone. The best part is that the leadership is on display by several, if not all, of these recruits. Before even stepping on campus, they have shown leadership, committment and respect…all of which are important to winning.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.23.11 @ 9:41 am

This is outstanding! Class young men.

Hopefully Chryst and Co. will finish strong with a few more linemen and linebackers.

What’s the word on Mason, are his nerves healing?

Also has Murphy been doing his homework and will he stay next year? He could really help the pass rush.

Any word on the transfers and how they look in practice.

Optimism Rules! Let’s go Pitt!

The football gods are finally looking favorably upon the Pitt football program.

I’ll be at the BBVA bowl game and hope Pitt starts the new year on the winning track. HTP!

Comment by MariettaMike 12.23.11 @ 9:49 am

There are still some good players to be had on this class. Rippy was mentioned. JP Holtz looks like a shoe in for this class. Ryan Watson DE could be locked down if the new staff can hit him up ASAP. Demetrious Cox was also looking at Wisc.

Kyle Dodson, big 4 star OT from Ohio, gave Wisc. a verbal this summer. If Bostad moves here there could be a chance Pitt could snake a top recruit. Really make up for losing out on Tavon Rooks.

Note to Beano (“the analyst”) Cook. This is one guy(of many) who did move FROM Florida to Ohio . Facts attest that actually 1/2 of people who move to Florida from the mid-Atlantic-midwest move back. Why? Certainly not the weather, but because of a multitude of reasons such as: family, stability, roots, colture, multigeneratinal interrelationships, educational exposures, and on and on. My last churcg was in central Florida. I CHOSE to move north. Mr. Cook is incorrect, the myth that moving south is a given is JUST THAT–a MYTH. May I suggest that we northerners relinquish our paranoia and our apologies and look around. It really is beginning to look a lot like “Chrystmad” (to quote Mr. Zeise) Rev. George from Columbus, only 3 hours from the paradise of “DA BURG”.

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 12.23.11 @ 10:45 am

Tossing Thabeets, I’m right with you on your comments about leadership among the recruits. It’s something that not too common anymore. Rather than “every man for himself” they managed to keep the class together. That should pay dividends down the road.

Comment by Justinian 12.23.11 @ 10:46 am

Rev George Mehaffe you are right i moved back to PA after 16 years in the south and south west. you can take the boy out of pa but you cant take pa out of the boy.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.11 @ 11:16 am

info news i posted this last night our coach chryst
is looking at montana OC jonathan smith to coach the QBs at pitt.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.11 @ 11:24 am

Rev George, SPOT ON!! I moved 13 times in 30 years with my company and always told them I wanted to be sent back to Pittsburgh. They moved me to Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, Michigan, and all places in between. They finally moved me back to Pittsburgh three years ago. My boss called me after a month and asked me if I had purchased any real estate yet. I told him, yes – I bought a cemetery plot! Like Dorothy in Oz, there’s no place like home.

Comment by wally 12.23.11 @ 11:29 am

Rev George .. I just hope Sarah Palin or others of her ilk does not see your reference to ‘Chryst’mas .. or else, you may be heading for excommunication.

Nontheless, I like many others here really enjoy your posts (wish I could say that for mine) .. and want to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas.

Comment by wbb 12.23.11 @ 11:42 am

So no one has anymore recruiting news?

Comment by Nabil 12.23.11 @ 11:51 am

It is great to hear that the recruits are sticking together and with Pitt. They are a class group and we should be proud they are coming to Pitt. It looks as if there is a lot of leadership and character in this group.

I second the notion of wanting to move back to PA. My wife and I are both from western PA and plan to move back in the next couple of years due to family and weather. It is darn hot here in the summer and late spring and early fall. At least I will not have to worry about getting season tickets when I move back.

Comment by John In South Carolina 12.23.11 @ 11:56 am

I’ll take my ‘Chrystmas’ without snow thank you. I’ve grown soft living in the Lone Star. However, I enjoy making the trip back to see family and old friends (in the Summer or Fall). Pittsburgh’s got that character and charm that’s hard to come by. I only moved South for the job opportunities and for some needed change. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a Blessed New Year to All my Pitt brothers and sisters. H2P!

Comment by TX Panther 12.23.11 @ 11:59 am

Yesterday was a very good day for Pitt football! It is my hope that this is beginning of many more good days for the Pitt Panthers. We look for good things in the coming years. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you.

Comment by Justinian 12.23.11 @ 12:07 pm

I think it’s very funny that a fraudulent coach like Graham who preached integrity and commitment to recruits ACTUALLY landed recruits with integrity. I have a ton of respect for all if the kids in this class. now let’s look to the future.

great article on the future of Pitt recruiting on panthersprey

Wbb just to be stright i think tino sucks untill he shows me outher wise.
but i was not a graham apologist i know you did not say i was.
but i want to go on record that i said if graham
did not win 9 games that he sucked and if any one looks up old posts i would offten say that he should get no slack no slack
i will admit i backed off near end of season becuse people were beating me down becuse of my stance. but i all ways said no slack for TG
Wbb HAVE A GOOD X MAS AND MY GOD KEEP YOU SAFE.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.11 @ 12:25 pm

Anyone notice Fraud Graham stuffing his face and talking at some old dude at the bowl game. Graham left because his act won’t work where there are more steers than cars. InTexas, being a braggart is expected in certain professions. In most other places, it is news for a short period of time and then becomes a noose. Professor Harold Hill got out just in time.
Feel bad for Brock DiCicco though.
Laugh if you will but I already bought my tickets to the Bowl Game. Looks like more fun now.

Comment by SFPitt 12.23.11 @ 12:28 pm

I was born in the Burgh and have two degrees from Pitt. I moved to Texas a number of years ago for job opportunities. There are a lot of great people here.
Fraud Graham is NOT typical of Texas. He is hated in the Houston area for the way he treated Rice-big talk, lies then snuck out of town after one year to Tulsa.

Comment by Houston Panther 12.23.11 @ 12:39 pm

Note that until the 1st of January, there is moratorium on recruiting where no caoches can make personal visits. Recruits are allowed to call or tweet coaches but there is a limit on what coaches can send to recruits. Note sure what theexact rule .. but it is extremely limited for last 2 weeks of Dec.

I think the most important forthcoming news over the next week or so, is not the recruiting, but the staff that Chryst is putting together. Maybe next week we will be hearing about who will be joining him here.

Comment by wbb 12.23.11 @ 12:42 pm

My pride doesn’t usually swell inside me that often, but in the case of these recruits staying committed it did. I am so proud of these young men for sticking together and staying committed to our beloved University of Pittsburgh. The leadership and class these guys have make me feel as though Graham was good for something. Unbelievable how well these guys handled everything and I am looking forward to seeing these young men take the next big step on the football field. I think the new coaching hire compliments these guys and rewarded their patience. I am very proud to say I attend the University of Pittsburgh even more so now than ever.

Comment by Timmeh 12.23.11 @ 12:48 pm

Wbb I have posted one name our next QB coach but
have had no one say if they like him or not.
or i should say he is being looked at bye our coach.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.11 @ 12:51 pm

Likewise, I had posted a bio of Todd Orlando who I read was a possible DC hire by Chryst. He is a Pgh native who played at Wisconsin, was a DC at UConn under Edsall and this past year was DC (ironically) under Crystobal at FIU. Just speculation of course.

FWIW, Leftwich is still OL coach here thru the bowl, and Graham already hired another OL coach, thus, he is available. Obviously, Chryst would like to bring the UW line coach who has a great reputation … but there is no guarantee that he will come … same for TE/recruting coordinator Rudolph (Belle Vernon native) and Partridge (former Pitt coach) .. all would be welcome additions.

Comment by wbb 12.23.11 @ 1:11 pm

Nabil you wanted recruiting news i have some but not the kind you want to hear.
Adam Pankey one of our 3 OT recruits is going to visit WVU in jan.

WBB – I have a sense of humor and think it’s terrific that the loyal fans and alumni of Pitt can celebrate Chrystmas!

Comment by Sarah Palin 12.23.11 @ 2:25 pm

There is good news and bad news. The bad news is that yes, we’ll probably still lose some recruits before LOI Day on Feb 2. But with the nucleus and more highly rated players seeming to stick together it will soften the blow.

The good news is that Paul Chryst will have open slots to fill with kids he wants to have on the roster. He already has eight scholarships open, more or less, and that may grow a bit. My hope is that if a kid is dead serious about taking off he do it as soon as he can so that gives PC more time to maneuver.

I have a feeling though the fence sitters may be sway to stay once they & thier parents have a sit-down with Chryst.

I do know that PITT has already stated that they will honor every scholarship offered and accepted by a committed recruit. That is the right and proper thing to do regardless if he doesn’t necessarily fit Chryst’s plans. To not do so would not only be unethical but would burn bridges we don’t have to burn.

I’ve a feeling that when the dust settles and Chryst can get up to speed with recruiting targets we’ll be more than satisfied with his first class.

FRANKCAN – the transfers we have coming in are already on the roster and have either been playing or have been practicing while sitting out the required one year period. Some of those transfers may take off I think. EJ Banks and Cullen Christen both had PITT in thier final top three so I think they will be happy to stay, plus they are very good players and can compete for playing time right off the bat.

Ray Vinopal who has no ties and came here only for Graham may not feel the same way. Anderson, who came in late in may look around and see his meal ticket gone and want to get playing time elsewhere.

Zach Brown is in his last season. He’s in PITT’s Grad School already so perhaps he stays at PITT in a Grad Ass’t role under PC and finishes his Masters. That would be great as he’s a top shelf young man.

Comment by Reed 12.23.11 @ 3:43 pm

WWB I had seen that about Trenton Coles. He was hit in the leg while kicking an extra point in the state championship game. It’s really unfortunate for him. At this point he has to take the time off and hopefully be able to play next year.

Comment by Justinian 12.23.11 @ 4:16 pm

Any news on Chris Jacobson being granted a 6th year of eligibility by the NCAA. We sure could use him back on the OL next year?

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.23.11 @ 4:19 pm

The type of player Chryst pursues will be a bit telling as well.

Anyone have any news on Coach Patterson? The fact that he is still here means he might consider staying or …..He’s packing up Toddy’s stuff and have it shipped to Tempe.

I’m hoping he gets a look from Chryst and stays as I think our D this year was way better than any of us thought it would be.

Who knows maybe he’s ready to part ways with Graham and make a GOOD name for himself.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 12.23.11 @ 4:43 pm

@Tony in Harrisburg. Chryst stated that he will interview any current coach if they want.

Comment by Digdug(Formerly Dugdog) 12.23.11 @ 5:58 pm

To follow on Reed’s post, I believe all of the transfers coming in are local. The 2 DBs from Michigan are from Eastern Ohio; Banks, Christian, Ricketts and Fenton are all from Pgh area and considered pItt so all is not lost .. at least they are closer to home.

Comment by wbb 12.23.11 @ 7:27 pm

FRANKCAN, I can vouch for you, you did state that many times!!

i lived in southwest down there were TG just went it was 122 degrees i still hve the tea shirt that said i lived thru 122.
i also went thru 2 hercanes one in alabama andone in florida.

it is brown and dusty in az no rivers no green trees no hills and no one in az talks to there man or lady next door walls between each house 7 foot high and the trafic 4 time as bad as pittsburgh in summer you go from air cond house to air con car you dont go out in summer unless your nuts you know what they say you can allways put more clothes on but once you are bare you are bare, and pittsburg was votrd the best place to live 8 out of 10 years icould go on and on but i wont.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.11 @ 8:30 pm

Yeti, LOL!!! Ya, if you don’t like low crime rate, great schools, hospitals, great place to raise a family. Tons of stuff to do.

NYC an easy drive away for a long weekend anytime you want.

Tons of beaches up and down the coast for vacations anytime you want.

Mountains close if you want.

Nations capital and Inner Harbor easy drives for long weekends anytime you want.

Yep, Pittsburgh is very provincial, I’ll give you that, and one of the main reasons I love Pittsburgh.

Not to mention 3 major sports teams, Pitt, artsy-fartsy if thats your thing, and a major tech region.

Yeti, it’s your opinion, and I respect that, I really do.

I’ll tell ya though, you couldn’t pay me enough money to raise my children in Florida, California or New York City. Great places to visit.

Psssst, don’t tell anyone, I like it that our traffic isn’t that heavy compared to other metro cities!!!!

Comment by Dan 12.23.11 @ 10:21 pm

Hey,if you’re a weather and heat guy, thats understandable. Personnally, I like the seasons, except Jan and Feb, they are a pain.

Comment by Dan 12.23.11 @ 10:24 pm

Well put Dan you got it 100 percect right

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.23.11 @ 10:45 pm

A third factor in the breakup of last year’s recruiting class could have been that those eighteen year old kids were perceptive and rational enough to see through Fraud Sham.

I am definitely on board with the Chryst hire. It appears like a move in the right direction. It’s good to see that the recruits see it that way too.

Comment by Barvo 12.24.11 @ 11:10 am

A little info on Pankey. I dont think he is going anywhere either because he has been in constant contact with the other recruits. Think he is just being cautious. He also had visited Wisconsin a couple of times so this could be a plus. BTW, he is 6’6″ and 315lbs.
