Don’t feel that the likely top-3 candidates for Pitt aren’t local enough? Worried that Teryl Austin lacks that real head coaching experience? Want that head coach with a fine, fine stache? Then apparently Pitt may be interviewing that guy.

A source said that 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula either will interview or already has interviewed for the job as the University of Pittsburgh’s head coach.

Tomsula replaced the fired Mike Singletary last year for the season finale in St. Louis. Tomsula is also highly regarded by the 49ers and his players. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said players and coaches try to get on bus three while going to the airport. That’s the bus Tomsula always sits on, and players and coaches feed off his energy and humor.

Jim Tomsula is from West Homestead and even coached the D-line at Woodland Hills for a year. Local ties, check.

He has a perfect record as a (interim) NFL head coach. Successful head coaching experience, check.

His wikipedia page describes him as “particularly self-deprecating and humble.” Anti-Graham factor, check.

And finally, after a one year absence. A fine plumage on the upper-lip.

Added bonus. Ron Jeremy look-alike jokes.

I’m sold.

UPDATE: It seems we have reached a certain level of Pitt fan derangement. Honestly, I thought we had at least 3 or 4 more days before that point.

Okay, let me spell this out. We have one, very unconfirmed report from a San Francisco beat writer that a career defensive line coach on the 49ers staff (originally from Western PA) has or will interview for the Pitt job. He has one season of actual coaching at the college level. At his alma mater. A D-II school. So absolutely zero history recruiting.

No other report. No confirmation from Pitt beat writers or recruiting sites. Something that on its face seems absolutely absurd.

What I thought was a rather tongue-in-cheek little post has people both flipping out at the very idea; and talking themselves into it. I guess I was too subtle.

I know, I know. “You wouldn’t put anything past Steve Pederson.” Stop. Stop it now.

Come on, time to step back. Just a little.

I am going to go crazy. Too many choices to decide from. And they all sound so delicious…

Comment by Todd Gack 12.20.11 @ 10:23 am

Uh-oh. Nothing against Tomsula, but if this is true, this looks like a disaster waiting to happen. Pitt needs to hire a coach ASAP. It looks like nothing has happened for the past 3 days. Now they want to open up the interview field? Why didn’t they talk with this guy last week if he is such a good candidate (and frankly, he doesn’t appear to be)?

I hope I’m wrong, but I just got this sinking feeling that Pitt is going to blow it with the “top 3” (who all appear to be qualified, if not perfect) and end up with a Callahan-type compromise. I really hope I’m wrong.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.20.11 @ 10:26 am

Ya know, well this guy, uh, he seems like the real-deal an stuff. An’ he’s got the kind of mustache that we could really use around here. An’ ya know well i think that we want a pixsburgh guy n’at an’ I think he’ll do just fine.

Comment by Baltimore in '84 12.20.11 @ 10:33 am

Actually for real this guy seems like the best choice. Just fits. I mean he lived out of his car so he could follow his dream. Out of his car!

Comment by Baltimore in '84 12.20.11 @ 10:34 am

I thought he lived in a van down by the river…

Comment by Pitt89 12.20.11 @ 10:40 am

One question: can he recruit? And can he prove it, or are we supposed to take his word? He’s been in the NFL, where it’s N/A.

I guess that’s two questions.

Recruiting in CFB is EVERYTHING.

Comment by Imma Man! Im 40! 12.20.11 @ 10:48 am

I graduated high school with Tom…they have a special segment on ESPN on him…aired last week….he followed his drea job, coaching. He lived in his car while a GA at Cawtaba….he said “really, it was not that bad!”…thats the character of the guy! His players love hime…in the ESPN piece u can see the love! Also Harbah only kept one coach and it was Tomsula!

He was a GREAT player at Steel Valley and played for George Novack…We were always ranked by USA Today back in the 80’s.

Comment by Big Black 12.20.11 @ 10:52 am

… and his college football coaching and recruiting experience is? Pro experience doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll win in the pros. (See, Wannstedt, Dave). But the ‘stache is a positive factor sorely lacking in the other candidates.

Did Dan Rooney interview him? maybe during the blackout?

Comment by velvil 12.20.11 @ 10:56 am

Oh……we called Jim, Tom ot Toms…if that makes sense????

Comment by Big Black 12.20.11 @ 10:56 am

Great story. Sounds like the guy really is a good coach. Doesn’t care about he money.

How that translates to the college level who knows.

[…] PittBlather says that the Pitt head coaching job has a possible frontrunner. It doesn’t actually say he’s a frontrunner, but it only names one guy so I’m speculating. He’s not a TV commentator, so the fans will be disappointed, but seems qualified. […]

I can no longer support the outher 3 we must have

Comment by Ronald 12.20.11 @ 11:25 am

I have no problem with any of the candidates, so we should check out their wives for possible interest in Pittsburgh. Mario’s wife was Miss Florida, a plus, but if Mrs. Tomsula has a nice ‘Burgh style babushka, they’re in!!

Comment by Chuck Morris 12.20.11 @ 11:27 am

Wow! I’m amazed after reading those articles. I wish nothing but good things for Tomsula.

Comment by JAM 05 Pitt 12.20.11 @ 11:40 am

You have got to be kidding. Might be a good coach but pro coach with no recruiting experience!! No one ever heard of him. If they hire him they can save money on stadium rental by vacating Heinz and renting from Carnegie-Mellon.

Comment by Houston Panther 12.20.11 @ 11:54 am

There is no way they hire him! Oh wait, this is Pitt they can hire who ever “they ” want!! This guy may be great and may have some credentials but it will hard to tell that to a high school kid. Especially one that just made the 2nd team All-American team(Shell).

Hire him to be the Athletic Director, now we are on to something!!!

Or possibly on the staff somewhere so that when Cristobal decides to leave he can possibly get the HC job then. Just not now!

Comment by QuipScript 12.20.11 @ 12:19 pm

My opinion: Teryl Austin is our man! He’s young, intelligent, humble and charismatic — based on 49er reports anyway. I still think Pitt should take their time and hire someone that wants Pitt to be successful and not hire someone who uses Pitt as a pit stop.

I guess I’m just a yunzer at heart. Any half decent coach that comes to Pitt will be successful. Pennsylvania is fertile ground with lots of talent for Pitt football.

Comment by MariettaMike 12.20.11 @ 12:46 pm

WTF? A Yinzer out of left field!

Whatever, it’s only Pitt, just put a dozen or some names on a dart board and have at it.

Comment by BATR 12.20.11 @ 12:46 pm

Compelling story

1)!guys from pgh – check
2) personality – check
3) passion – check
4) experience + / –
5) recruiting – + / –

I like him. Seems like angood guy who is in it for all the right reasons. As good a candidate as anyone else that has been mentioned but not a slam dunk. He seems like he will work his butt off though. Concern- another “Peter Principle” pick?

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 12.20.11 @ 1:00 pm

This is a joke….right?

Comment by notrocketscience 12.20.11 @ 1:02 pm

Penn State can have him.

Comment by TX Panther 12.20.11 @ 1:03 pm

Of course! It all makes sense! All dude would need do is pull out his NFL Europe card and he could land any kid he wanted. Especially since NFL Europe has been out of business since current HS juniors & seniors were in diapers.

Why are we talking to guys were never even coordinators in college? Teryl Austin I get, a proven CFB recruiter and a Pitt guy. But his lack of HC experience gives me pause.

But this guy Tomsula makes zero sense, at least not today. Maybe to replace Christobal in 3 years.

Comment by Imma Man! Im 40! 12.20.11 @ 1:05 pm

This is hilarious. I officially give up caring about this hire. Just hire someone (anyone?) please.

Comment by Nabil 12.20.11 @ 1:10 pm

I second that emotion. I am overwhelmed with all this Panther passion and speculation. Hire somebody this week.

I guess the advantage of hiring a coordinator is that he would be more likely than an established HC to bring in your “Pitt Guy” as a DC (Austin) or OC (Cignetti, et al), if thats what you seek.

Hire MC. $$$ cures many ills (wife, cultural concerns).I am not worried about a 3-4 yr stint as Pitt’s HC. As stated somewhere, the 2 best in my memory—Majors I & Jackie S. –were 3-4 yr guys who put Pitt back on the CFB map. HTP

Comment by Bossdaws 12.20.11 @ 1:17 pm

Perhaps the strategy is to overwhelm the public with too many choices and they eventually take anyone.

Hire the next guy and let’s move on and put this hiring thing on the back burner for 48 months 😉

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 12.20.11 @ 1:18 pm

i just want them to hire someone fast so that this recruiting class will stay together.

Comment by Ronald 12.20.11 @ 1:19 pm

Pitt needs a coaching staff right now, not really a coach. Having SF go on a play off run and everytime the show Tomsula face, “the next coach at Pitt” As long as one of the coaches are there to say, see kid that’s your coach. Everythign will be fine. The only down side, people might confuse Tomsula with Tomlin…since their names sound so alike, and they both have some nice facial hair.

Comment by dcpinpgh 12.20.11 @ 1:23 pm

Hiring MC or Chryst makes the most sense- probably keeps the recruiting class together and picks up a few others who were looking. Hiring an NFLer hasn’t worked.

Comment by markp 12.20.11 @ 1:24 pm

Hey, for all of you that say this guy isn’t a viable candidate. He’s got personality. And personality goes a long way.

Comment by Baltimore in '84 12.20.11 @ 1:28 pm

Okay, everyone. I have updated this post. Please read. Then follow the suggestion.

Comment by Chas 12.20.11 @ 1:37 pm

Seriously, hire this man. We can’t compete with Ohio state in recruiting and once Ped State gets back we can’t compete with them either. With this guy’s personality we can. Kids will follow him. Because they will have fun AND excel.

Comment by Emel 12.20.11 @ 3:52 pm

No, no, no – please let this be a rumor and nothing else. The last thing we need is an NFL coach – let alone a second level NFL assistant. Nothing personal against the guy, but we need a college coach who knows how to play a modern college game and understands how to deal with student-athletes. More than that we need someone with enough instant credibility at this level to save what could be an excellent recruiting class. Any of the previous top 3 candidates would be a better choice IMO.

Comment by Steve 12.20.11 @ 3:53 pm

whoops. happy hour started early today gents.

Here’s a national post that will not resonate well with anyone Pitt related, although I happen to agree with it. Regardless of who wrote it and any motivations behind it. It is now out there so enjoy smiley, enjoy! Your name is out there bro!

Rivals.com football recruiting analysts weigh in on topics in a roundtable format.

Which school has hurt itself in recruiting the most by its coaching change this offseason?

Mike Farrell: Not that it was by choice, but Pittsburgh appears to be in trouble. The Panthers fired a good fit and recruiter in Dave Wannstedt, hired Mike Haywood, who was fired pretty much immediately after domestic violence charges were brought against him, and then hired Todd Graham as the man for the future – only to see him bolt for Arizona State after a year. While I don’t think it will hurt them this year because most of their top recruits are either out of other options or never wanted to leave the area in the first place, Pitt is now looked upon by many recruits and families as a stop-gap job and not a final destination. The Panthers had a guy who lived and breathed Pitt football, showed him the door and now they are looking for their fourth coach in a little over a year. Not good for the future. Athletic director Steve Pederson has made the head coaching job a mockery.

The last sentence says it all. Please quit Mr. Pederson.

At this point, I would take the 49er or Austin. I don’t want to keep posting the same thing each year as we search for a coach that wants to be here. It’s all about me fellers.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 12.20.11 @ 4:51 pm

How’d it work out for Colorado-U to hire a young guy — Jon Embree — with NFL-only experience and who, like Tomsula, had never been higher than a position coach?

Answer: Not very well.

And that guy was even a CU alum!

Comment by Imma Man! Im 40! 12.20.11 @ 5:20 pm

There’s a strategy playing out here.

Steve leaks some names, even interviews some guys, then waits. If the fan feedback is positive, leak a few more names more obscure than the first ones. Positive feedback? Repeat.

When the feedback is mostly negative and the fanbase is nearing apoplexy, that’s the guy.

As you can see we’re not even close to naming our next coach.
