A Couple Leftover B-Ball Thoughts

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 1:43 pm

A couple things I forgot to include in the basketball post from earlier.

Once again, the free throw shooting in the final minute played a role in making the game tighter than it should have been. With a minute left, Pitt had a 9 point lead, 70-61. Pitt shot 4-8 on free throws down the stretch. Dante Taylor was fouled and missed both FTs. Then Nasir Robinson went only 1-2 when he was fouled.

The good news, was that Pitt worked harder to make sure Ashton Gibbs got the ball in his hands in the next possession. Gibbs, in fact, took the last four free throws. As we saw in the Tennessee game, the struggle with FTs made the final score tighter than it needed to be. Just going to have to keep sweating that for a while longer.

Despite the struggle to fully close that game out, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander came away impressed with Pitt.

My mea culpa comes now, because even if the Panthers haven’t played a terrific schedule, with all the youth they have, they still haven’t deviated from how they play. I didn’t think the Panthers were set to have another big year in the paint, thought they had backcourt problems and would take a significant step back. But it’s not looking like the case. Even if Pitt winds up not being as good this year as it was last, a “significant step back” seems highly unlikely now.

Jamie Dixon’s team looks really good. It was gruff and won despite only forcing four turnovers against Oklahoma State Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

You don’t need a lot of turnovers if you’re grabbing so many rebounds. Rebounds are really disguised as turnovers that require more work and less luck. The Panthers covet them like Christmas cookies. Heading into the game, Pitt had a nation-leading 45.5 offensive-rebounding percentage. It took down 61 percent (14 offensive boards) of second-chance snares against Oklahoma State, 43 rebounds in all.

And to think the rebounding was a concern after the first few games.

I actually thought it was a really solid win and we seemed to control the entire game. The rebounding, passing, most of the decision making were solid. The combination of Gibbs, Patterson, and Robinson is not the most athletic group of players and there are a lot of teams out there that would kick their asses in a basketball combine, but they all have very high basketball IQ’s, pretty much play within themselves, and all have actual skills. However, besides just FTs, we simply need to do a better job of closing out.

BTW, if you haven’t seen him in person, Malcolm Gilbert is a BIG dude. Wow. Looking forward to seeing what he can do. No one is going to push that cat around.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 12.12.11 @ 2:05 pm

And Dante Taylor is 32nd in Offensive Rebounding Percentage nationally per Kenpom.

Comment by velvil 12.12.11 @ 3:13 pm

Well, the Panthers also had an 8 point lead in the Tennesee game which also almost got away from them because of missing free throws at the end of the game With a lead they may have to begin thinking of pulling our the poor foul shooters. I don’t care if you end up with 5 guards on the floor. If not, the opposition will double team Ashton Gibbs and leave Dante Taylor or Nesir Robinson open just so they can foul them. That’s what I would do if I was playing Pitt.

Comment by Justinian 12.12.11 @ 3:44 pm

Yea I noticed Gilbert right away, that guy is really big, he’s really 6’11”. Looks like he’s headed for a Red Shirt so we’re more than likely not going to see him until next year. So when Adams comes, he’s like 7’0″ 260 or so, Gilbert is 6’11” 240, next year he’ll be 250 or bigger. That is going to be a huge frontline. At that point you can play Taylor and Birch at PF or even one of them (whoever displays those skills) at SF. That would be the biggest PITT front line EVER. We could have a PITT version of Phi Slamma Jamma !!

HTP!

I agree with Ford, I thought Gibbs pace was a key. He was fantastic Saturday, made good decisions, hit a few big shots, chased Page all over the place, all in 39 mins. High marks.

We are definitely getting there. Easily beating a team with a lottery pick on a neutral floor without your starting PG is nothing to sneeze at.

Comment by Joe 12.12.11 @ 4:04 pm

BY the end if the season this TEAM WILL BE HELL

Comment by 63 Team 12.12.11 @ 4:07 pm

Emel, that rotation has the potential to be fun. This team is leading the country in offensive rebounding…Imagine what they’ll do with the above front line. Other teams will have to deal with wave after wave of subs who just pound the glass.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.12.11 @ 4:17 pm

I also thought Gibbs played well. He handled the ball deliberately (which is the only way he can, given his physical limitations) and effectively and he didn’t force up shots. I really wish Dixon would let John Johnson try to bring it up a bit, just to see what would happen, but he must already know that chaos would ensue. Patterson also played a nice all-around game and took a little pressure off Gibbs.

Nas is going to have Le’Bryan Nash nightmares for a while (that’s one tough freshman), but at least he didn’t let it bother his offense.

I wasn’t sure what to take from the game, though, because I came away thinking that was one of the worst Cowboy hoop teams I’ve seen. I don’t remember them making any noise last year, so that must have started the slide and things are getting worse. Nash was the only bright spot and he won’t be there long.

Yup sence you brought up football pitt made a in home vist to a QB Jared Johnson from texas .

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.12.11 @ 5:24 pm

I saw Graham myself on the LBJ Expressway today.

Comment by TX Panther 12.12.11 @ 5:26 pm

dont keep up much on the recruiting scene, but anyone know what would have precipitated what appears to be a fall in jared johnsons status? To go from committed to baylor to a final 3 of texas state, memphis and pitt seems to be a bit of a dropoff… is he a 2-3 star recruit? Academic issues?

Comment by Big Bill 12.12.11 @ 6:02 pm

Also, does this perhaps suggest voytik is waivering on his decision?

Comment by Big Bill 12.12.11 @ 6:05 pm

Voytik is as solid as they come with his commitment

Comment by Tony Dews and Dont's 12.12.11 @ 6:46 pm

BIG BILL I read thst he de commited dont know how come and i think pitt does not want to put all there eggs in one basket so to speak look what happend this year with just one QB i think they know they need 3 or 4 QB ON THE TEAM.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.12.11 @ 6:59 pm

Voytik is 100% committed. We need more arms at QB- I’m sure you’ve read the newspaper articles. Trey Anderson has some tendinitis. Meyers may or may not return. Just to practice you need at least 4 arms at QB

Comment by Tony Dews and Dont's 12.12.11 @ 7:27 pm

Saturday was Gibbs best game of the season. If Nasir is having Nash nightmares, then I hope Nash is having nightmares about Nasir. Man I love that kids offense.

Johnson had a rough night, but he did hit a nice three off a great ball fake. Patterson is a great offensive player as well.

The problem is that Pitt’s defense still isn’t where it needs to be. Giving up 1.06 PPP to a mediocre or less Ok. State game is progress? That’s pretty sad. Hopefully Dixon can find some way to teach these kids to play okay defense. If not, then we are going to have to hope that Pitt shoots 50%+ every game. I guess it could happen, but I doubt that it will in March.

Comment by omar 12.12.11 @ 7:33 pm

I would love to see more zone, Omar. It pains me to see Sleepy, Birch and Zanna mucking around the perimeter.

Boeheim’s strategy makes sense to me. Aren’t they #1 this week?

Comment by steve 12.12.11 @ 7:45 pm

So far so good, won’t know how good we are until the competition improves. Schedule builds nicely.

Good to build confidence and teamwork.

Jamie build boys into men. Anyone here who saw Wanamaker and now Nas go from freshmen to seniors are liars if they say they thought they would be this good. I am hoping that Taylor has turned the corner. Gibbs looks like he may be reaching another level as well.

First time simce Blair we will count on the young guys as much, Patterson looks up to it. Who will be heard from next?

Comment by gc 12.12.11 @ 8:05 pm

for all there talk abought how WVU is better at going to there football games then we are
it is on line that WVU has notsold out there allotment of tickets to there bowl game in fact they are not even close.

@Atlanta, funny you posted that. Hadn’t gone on scout or rivals in ages, went on last night on my own, and was pretty amazed at the class they have put together.

Four, 4stars, many others. Guess I kept hearing the names, but, never put together, “hey, this guy has a pretty strong recruiting class”.

Yep, lookin’ good!

Comment by Dan 12.13.11 @ 8:51 am

@Atlanta, oh, my point being, I look on there out of the blue at 2am, come in to the office, you have something posted about it!!!! Good stuff.

Comment by Dan 12.13.11 @ 8:52 am

Steve–just wait until Dixon’s offense slices, dices and shreds Boeheim’s zone! Dixon knows exactly how to exploit that zone effectively.

Comment by pitt1972 12.13.11 @ 10:03 am

There will probably be another two 4star recruits added before all is said and done.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 12.13.11 @ 10:04 am

@ Dan and Ontario Rock on brothers! We just need a few more O-Lineman to round out the class and yea another couple of 4 stars never hurt! I’m pretty geeked about what the next few years could look like!

HTP!

Comment by Atlanta Panther 12.13.11 @ 11:10 am

our guards are too small to play Boeheim’s zone. teams would shoot right over them.

Comment by hugh green 12.13.11 @ 12:09 pm

Steve – *with all due respect* – going to a zone is a horrible idea.

Jamie tried it against LBSU and it was god awful.

Gibbs and Woodall are far too short and slow to effectively disrupt the passes, drives and shots on the perimeter. And without a man and a defined block out responsibility, rebounding will be a big issue for our physically challenged big guys. Nas is too short and Taylor, Birch, Zanna are too weak.

The man to man team defense has been better lately and should continue to improve. Jamie knows how to teach/coach man to man. Zone for him is a change of pace thing or a desperation thing. We aren’t there yet.

Jimmy Boeheim knows how to coach the zone and he has the players for it.

Dixon does know how to beat it. BUT this year’s Syracuse zone is going to be harder for Jamie to slice and dice. They are really long. It is going to be harder for Nas to get off his shots in the cracks. And we don’t really have any guys who can get into the middle of the zone off the bounce like Brad and Gil did previously. ‘Cuse’s length on the perimeter will make it harder for Gibbs, Johnson and Woodall to get shots.

Comment by boubacar aw 12.13.11 @ 12:12 pm

Damn hugh – first Omar starts agreeing with you, now me, what has this site come to?

Comment by boubacar aw 12.13.11 @ 12:15 pm

Ithink the rivals team ranking for football are better more real to the truth of how it is.
rivals has us with the 29th best class that put us at second in big east only cinninati is better.
and if we were in the ACC this year we would have the 6 best class in the ACC.
This is still a very good job bye TG.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.13.11 @ 2:36 pm

Agree to all on the zone for Pitt. Good solid man defense with help is what this team needs.

I think Pitt will do a fine job of carving out the Cuse zone. I believe it was two years ago? when Pitt didn’t look like they were heading for a very good season and went to the Dome and handled the Orange. I think Nas is terrific at finding holes in the zone (probably his best skill) and is a tremendous asset against a team like Syracuse. Yes, they are long, but they always are and we have some shooters who can really stretch it this year (more so than years past). I think Pitt will do fine. If Woodall is back they will have the guy that can get into the zone off the dribble.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 12.13.11 @ 3:38 pm

OK, OK, I’m zoning out now.

Comment by steve 12.13.11 @ 5:08 pm

On the defense thing. While we need to concentrate and learn how to play the man to man better, there are some tweaks worth mentioning

It certainly helps when you’re playing a better team, if you CAN change to a different defense(s), if even just to give them a …….different look. Cause a little confusion with them, take them ‘out of their comfort zone’, in coach speak.

Let’s say, like in a game against Butler and we’ve had a lot of these close games in March and April, the one to 4 point games.

If you can steal a possession here and there, by confusing the other team with a different defense and getting a turnover or two that leads to points, that can be the difference between moving on, or going home. Whether it’s the BE tourney or the Big Dance.

It also gives the other team something else to prepare for, rather than a predictable same old defense for 40 minutes. Again not saying, we should abandon the man to man, just add some wrinkles to it. It could be what gets us over the proverbial ‘hump’.

Comment by Emel 12.13.11 @ 7:09 pm

Aside from the last couple games, I thought our team FT% was much better than years past.

A team that shoots less than 60% from the FT scares me more than one that gives us more than 60 points.

Rebound, Score, Contest shots, Make FTs….

Simple, but so few teams do it consistently and effectively.

Re: Gilbert. Saw him live at the Pete…he is big!

Comment by Pauly P 12.14.11 @ 7:22 am

Throwing in a zone — or, to be completely crazy, a light half-court press — for a few possessions, just to throw a team out of rhythm would be great to see on occasion. It’s not a sure-fire solution when a team gets on a run, but it can be effective.

Comment by Carmen 12.14.11 @ 8:25 am

Last year in the second half of the season, they switched to zone, once for an extended period of time, about once a game. Opposing teams would call a timeout and make adjustments. Switching defenses is tactic that does not work against well-coached teams. We are not a zone or pressing team and switching can just as easily offer a shift in momentum to the other team….Zone, press, Dante Taylor playing power forward. These are reoccurring moles that keep popping up and need to be whacked.
