Waiting for the M*A*S*H Report

Lots of things to like about that win. But a lot more that can really bring you down fast.

The obvious is that Ray Graham is injured. Still no official word, but seeing his knee buckle when he planted on it, and the way he went down does not make me optimistic. The pain he was in made me wince. The MRI is scheduled for today. I expect we will hear something around noon.

Unfortunately he was not the only loss. Cam Saddler was finally having a great game. There is no question the knee injuries in the past have completely sapped any burst or explosiveness, that he had coming out of high school. He still can be productive. Last night was the first time where he was catching passes in stride, allowing him to get yards after the catch. And then to suffer an apparent injury to his wrist. a fractured sternum.

Then there was redshirt freshman Matt Rotheram. Getting his first start, playing at Right Guard for this game. Rotheram had passed others on the depth chart in the previous weeks and was now starting. He went down with a leg injury, that would appear to be a season-ender. [UPDATE: fractured left ankle.]

If you are keeping track at home, that is 3 OL, 2 WR, 1 S, and 1 RB down for significant games.

Cory Jacobson — out for the season.

Lucas Nix — Has missed last 3 games plus all but 2 plays in the USF game — essentially half the season to this point.

Matt Rotheram –injured in UConn game, status TBA.

Salath Williams — out for the season, injured in Utah game.

Cam Saddler — left midway through UConn game, status TBA.

Jason Hendricks — out for the season, injured in Utah game.

Ray Graham — injured on 4th play of UConn game, status TBA (but grim).

That’s 5 starters from the beginning of the season depth chart and two more from the two-deep. But for Hendricks, all the losses are coming from the offense.

The Graham injury also pointed out how bad the offensive line is without a superlative back available. Zach Brown is a solid back-up and with his more punishing style, a great change of pace back. He also could only manage 30 yards on 12 carries — with 11 yards on 1 carry. He also had 5 carries for no gain or negative yards. I don’t put the blame on Brown, as much a very patchwork O-line that couldn’t open many holes. Many wondered during the liveblog why Pitt was passing on so many 3d and short plays. The inability to even get short yards with any consistency would seem to be a good reason.

Brown, though, was much more effective with any sort of space as evidenced by his 84 receiving yards on 9 catches. Expect to see a lot more quick screens and slants at this point. Not only will it force Sunseri getting rid of the ball faster, but with the state of the O-line it is a necessity.

This is pretty much a lost season for Pitt but I really feel for Ray. Let’s hope his draft stock is not too damaged by this.

Comment by Chuck Morris 10.27.11 @ 10:32 am

It seems a shame especially about Jacobsen, Nix and Graham, since i’m sure this will negatively affect their draft status

Comment by wbb 10.27.11 @ 10:37 am

What season is lost?

This race is wide open.

Comment by H.LandPitt 10.27.11 @ 10:58 am

If winning a horrible Big East is your goal, then sure, the game is on. But if good football is the goal, its rebuilding time at best.

I’m actually of two minds about this. On one hand, I’d love to finally win the conference outright before we leave, but on the other hand I don’t want to watch Oklahoma slaughter us on New Year’s Day by 45 points.

But we all can agree that beating the Hoopies one more time would be the bee’s knees.

Comment by Chuck Morris 10.27.11 @ 11:18 am

Good job by Todd Graham and Co. to get a win last night.

I’m not expecting to win the Big East, especially without Graham because we still don’t have any downfield passing attack, but at least Tino threw the short balls well last night.

I’m hoping for a few more wins- enough to convince some more recruits to come here and get a solid season going next year.

Two years from now needs to be our time to start shining.

Comment by Tony Dews and Don'ts 10.27.11 @ 11:21 am

The “Standard is the Standard” let the backups get the pt.

Comment by alcofan 10.27.11 @ 11:29 am

@ Tony, I agree, realistically two years is when we should START expecting the “high octane” offence to produce consistantly week in and week out. Weve seen glimpses of what this O can be. In 2 years voytik would be soph, or rs fresh, so even then we shouldnt expect to go 12-0. It sucks to hear but i think its going to take some time. I think we can
have a good team still, but TG and the rest of us want a championship team.

Comment by nc23cn 10.27.11 @ 11:45 am

And also i think TG is taking us in that irection, despite what many think.

Comment by nc23cn 10.27.11 @ 11:50 am

Comment by nc23cn 10.27.11 @ 11:51 am

nc23cn, no doubt that this offense should be more consistent in 2 years no matter who is QB. What last night and the game vs USF proves that there is definitely pretty good talent on this team, it is just the execution that’s a work in progress

Comment by wbb 10.27.11 @ 11:56 am

Obviously, we have a lot of injuries on offense and particularly the line. Could that be because High Octane puts linemen in more vulnerable positions with the pace, movement, pulling, etc.? Just a question for debate, unless one of you stat geeks has something on that from TG’s past teams or other programs that run similar systems.

Or maybe our current linemen are “built” differently because they were recruited for a pro set versus the read option that TG runs.

Comment by TampaT 10.27.11 @ 12:25 pm

Kudos to Tino, he played well…more decisive and accurate, but UConn got undressed by WVU, and WVU ain’t all that.

You just cannot beat anyone good without completing a pass (in the air) over 12 yards…I like they took some downfield shots and Tino actually threw them pretty well, yet no completions. Its pretty simple, good teams will stack the line and pressure Tino, daring him to beat them downfield — hope he can do it but he’s never beat anyone that way.

As someone posted, UConn played a stupid game and let us off the hook on our short passes. HTP and hope for the best.

Comment by Matt N. 10.27.11 @ 12:31 pm

I was glad Pitt won but hated to see all the injuries that will sting the rest of the season. On the down side, UCONN does not have a good team this year.

On the bright side, T.Graham is fixing the holes in this team. With the transfers and recuites things looking bright. The big fish is the OT Travon [not sure of his last name], he could step right in next year and solve some of the OL problems. T. Graham is going to turn this program around sooner that most think. Go Pitt!!!!

Comment by joel 10.27.11 @ 12:32 pm

I’d honestly like to see us go 7-5 and have a shot at winning a 2nd or 3rd tier bowl. It’s something the team can feel good about after such a poor start and gives the team something to build on for next year. Chuck Morris is right, getting slaughtered by Oklahoma (or even worse…Boise State) on New Year’s day is nobody’s idea of a good time.

And yea, Matt N you are right. UConn didn’t have a great defensive game plan for us. IMHO we’ve yet to show we can beat press coverage combined with an aggressive blitz package.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 10.27.11 @ 12:57 pm

Atlanta Panther, your O is not H, it is pretty much spot on.

Comment by wbb 10.27.11 @ 1:05 pm

Atlanta Panther and Chuck Morris,

I am sorry, but you are both ridiculous…2nd or 3rd tier bowl??? That is straight loser talk.

Big L on your forehead.

End of Story. Done Deal.

Win the effing Conference, shut up already.

Comment by H.LandPitt 10.27.11 @ 1:10 pm

Yeah, I’m not getting all of this “let’s be mediocre in a mediocre conference” talk. You never want your kids shooting for second place or worse. What’s that old saying? “They don’t give out trophies for losing” or something like that.

I get that some of you guys are being realistic given that we may have half an offensive line and no Ray G. for the rest of the season. Selfishly, if they’re in the St. Petersburg bowl, it’s a short trip for me. But I’d rather go to Miami for the Orange Bowl any day.

You ALWAYS play to win, even if winning may get you embarrassed at the end of the year. Top recruits will pay more attention and guys with mindsets like Ray G. will think they can make the difference for you the next time around.

Comment by TampaT 10.27.11 @ 1:30 pm

Don’t accept mediocrity. Just win baby. The standard is the standard. Commitment to excellence. Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. You gotta believe.

And, you know even if we do get slaughtered (ye of little faith), that means Pitt either won the Big East outright (for the first time ever) or won the tie breaker again. That means a BCS bowl game in a very good location on national TV. That can only help with recruits and a finicky fan base.

Bring it on!

Comment by TX Panther 10.27.11 @ 1:30 pm

The injuries to the O-Line are incredible. The Steelers are suffering from the same problem for the past 2 seasons.

Alan Faneca (all world OL for the Steelers) commented on all of these OL injuries last week (speaking about the Steelers)and said that O linemen must keep their legs moving at all times even when the play is over. He says that is one of the biggest mistakes he sees from the big men up front. It makes a lot of sense, it seems that most injuries take place when the feet are planted or legs are rolled up on when the play is over.

Seems like something that could easily be taught to maybe prevent some of these injuries.

Comment by Coach Ditka 10.27.11 @ 1:30 pm

No need to be a tedious troll…everyone wants to go 12-0 and win the national title — I think they’re just making a fair assessment of what our team is heading towards with Tino at the helm.

If you think Pitt can beat a top five/ten team with Tino chucking 3 yard swing passes and taking stupid sacks all day, you got my vote for optimist of the year.

Comment by Matt N. 10.27.11 @ 1:31 pm

Sunseri had a good game, but 60% of the time he still looks uncomfortable to me. Nothing is smooth. Even his “accurate” passes are mostly behind the receivers. I really hope Voytik comes in next year and just lights it up in the early practices and beats him out for the starting job. Watching him run the offense is just not enjoyable.

Comment by Carmen 10.27.11 @ 1:42 pm

The sad part is that Ray Graham was a having an sensational season dispite the team’s offensive problems. He had the ability to jump-cut horizontally and be off to races in the blink of an eye. I haven’t seen anyone do that since Barry Sanders retired. I sincerely hope that Ray Graham fully recovers from the injury. I realize that there are no garantees that he gets back to 100%, but for his sake, I hope he does.

Ray, I hope to see you back in form and as good as ever next season. Good Luck.

Comment by Justinian 10.27.11 @ 1:52 pm

From these posts, I believe everyone is correct.

We should be shooting to try to grab that championship, and BCS berth, even if we get slaughtered. Goal is to get there.

On the flip side, with the learning, rebuilding, and now, no one could call this an excuse, just a fact, the inordinate amount of injuries this team has suffered……….

people are being realistic, and hoping we can just get to a bowl game, get those 3 or 4 extra practice weeks, that I’ve seen every coach talk about, (like an extra spring ball), and not go in the tank and up 5-12 or 4-8.

This team is really on the edge, I believe, to become a half decent team, hopefully they are learning, or with the injuries and running the new offense, just treading water or losing a couple more games.

I believe, they are capable of either.

Losing Ray Graham really puts us in a pickle though. Not an excuse, just the way it is.

He has developed into a back, that you can’t just say, “just put someone else in”.

Nothing would suprise me, but, I believe we’re moving in the right direction.

Comment by Dan 10.27.11 @ 2:01 pm

And you probably thought Pitt had no chance of beating the Hoopies that year. Miracles do happen and teams do choke. All I read are excuses on why Pitt cannot win and should just give up. It’s time for players to step up and to begin burning some redshirts. You need to aim high and believe.

Sincerely,
Santa Claus

Comment by TX Panther 10.27.11 @ 2:05 pm

Also, I don’t buy into the UCONN sucks. Allthough they do.

You could through S.Fla, UCONN, Rutgers and Utah into a hat and pull one out. Are Rutgers and Utah better than UCONN and USF, ya, probably, but, it’s not some David and Goliath disparity.

I believe Pitt lost to Rutgers and Utah, because of Pitt!!

Also, this is not Johnny Majors II. They had Iowa and Notre Dame beat. Yes, we lost, and it’s on the coaching staff and players.

My point is, we’re not getting beat 70-0. It’s gonna take time, but, I’m starting to like what we are doing.

4-4, lets win the championship, I’m all for it!!!

If we get to a bowl game, I would be thrilled.

Comment by Dan 10.27.11 @ 2:06 pm

Wow, Tex, what forums are you reading? Who said anything about the team giving up? Especially against the Hoopies. We all will be rooting heavily in that game. I just don’t do the false hope thing. And in the future, please stop using hackneyed cliches like “time for players to step up”. You make it sound like they have some hidden talent and if only they tried harder it would come out.
Burning redshirts is irresponsible when you are trying to build a program. Trust the coaches on this.

My Halloween costume this year is a Pitt fan but I’m finding it difficult to acquire the essential attire for the outfit down here in Texas. Some of you yinzers may have what I need.

* acceptance of mediocrity
* self loathing

* belief in being snake bitten
* one excuse after another

I’ll pay for the shipping costs. Appreciate the help.

I hope the players don’t give up but rise to the challenge and adapt to circumstance. It appears that some fans have given up and some fans are fearful of being embarrassed if Pitt should go to a BCS game. That’s thinking I can’t understand.

Comment by TX Panther 10.27.11 @ 2:41 pm

It’s offical:

Ray Graham, Matt Rotheram (broken left ankle) and Cam Saddler (fractured sternum) are out for the season

The last (only) time we went to a BCS game Urban Meyer humiliated us, our coach was run out of town on a rail, the national press called for the loss of our AQ, and hilariously, Utah’s Alex Smith was the 1st overall pick in the NFL draft. I think he may of thanked Walt Harris at the draft, but that was a while ago …:)

Comment by Chuck Morris 10.27.11 @ 4:00 pm

TX Panther – Wanna go trick or treating as a Panther fan? Dress as an empty yellow chair.

Too bad so many missed a nice (but costly) win by the Panthers. The rain held off until the ride home and the temperature was pleasant enough.

Comment by dinosaur 71 10.27.11 @ 4:14 pm

Am I the only fan even semi-optimistic about Zach Brown as our starter going forward? He’ll not make up for Ray Graham 100% of course but I think with a solid starting role, and starter’s snaps in practice he’ll give us a running game and match Graham’s production receiving out of the backfield. No one is going to replace Graham’s production out there but let’s not fold up the tent and walk away either.

I’m also looking for to see what some of the younger kids can do out there. Cory Davis has some time in, Malcolm Crockett and Isaac Bennett haven’t touched the ball yet and we could be looking at one of those who can contribute.

Of course, since everything is sequential to other things, if our OL sucks I take back all my comment.

Tino had an excellent game and was on the money in this type of offense. Coach Graham is right about this type of football 5 and 7 yard passes and hoping for broken tackles about keeping you from sitting down in your seat. I was so bored by this style of football even when it worked against UConn – who gratfully played zone defense and gave all underneath passes as a gift – that I did not set down in the second half I turned off the game. Just my opinion that the short passing game (5 yard slants, screens, and quick outs) are an important part of any offenseive game plan and lend to the excitement of the game but if that’s all you do in the passing game it is boring. Plus I feel for Graham and his devistating injury. It is hard to run out of this formation with no lead blocking to take out the linebackers and safties. Good luck to Schell.
