There was a report — quickly debunked — over the weekend of a possible tri-merger of the Big East, Mountain West and Conference USA. Turned out the report was based on a possible plan that Mountain West and C-USA that never really had any juice.

Well, it looks like they are still trying to pitch it.

Commissioners from the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA are scheduled to meet with the head of the Big East Conference on Wednesday to discuss the formation of one 28- to 32-football team super conference to try to gain automatic Bowl Championship Series status.

The Mountain West and Conference USA already have agreed to merge by either next year or in 2013. The Big East has automatic BCS status, but is in danger of losing it after 2013 and has been exploring adding teams from the Mountain West and Conference USA in an attempt to salvage it. But the two Mountain West members face hefty exit fees should they leave — Boise State up to $21 million and Air Force up to $9.6 million — that could dissuade them from jumping to the Big East.

Seeing an opportunity, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson and Conference USA’s Britton Banowsky will make the proposal to the Big East’s John Marinatto in New York to create a mega conference.

And this was scheduled before the West Virginia news broke.

Now I give this thing a better chance than a snowball in hell.

“We would figure out some way — four divisions of seven teams each, a playoff and then a conference championship game — to come up with the (automatic qualifier),” UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood said. “Craig and Britton are going into this meeting in New York with one thing in mind, to make this happen with the Big East.”

Go for it, Big East. Not only would you be able to let Pitt, Syracuse and WVU out early, but ND would assuredly run screaming from this thing.

But where?

Their choices would be convincing the Big 12 to let them do the partial membership thing, joining the A-10, WCC or Missouri Valley, or swallowing that last vestige of arrogance and joining the Big 10 or ACC for realsies.

Chas, thanks for being on top of this stuff. A lot of fun especially since safely jumping ship.

I think that Mountain USA East megaconference is a great idea. It probably should get a BCS bid. Giving 32 teams access to the BCS for only one of the six automatic slots would really quiet the peasantry of D-IA college football.

I would assume nothing would change for the other sports and this is purely a football only conference. They might as well do it; look to be running out of options at this point. You’d still have a 13 member Big East basketball league, if my math is correct.

Leave it to the Hoopies to vote in a $10 mil fee for exiting the conference 2 weeks before they depart.

Comment by San Diego Panther 69 10.25.11 @ 5:21 pm

Chas, I think this may have a better chance of becoming a reality than you think. It may happen by default as the remaining Big East football teams have run out of options. Why would Boise State, Air Force, and Navy want to join the Big East and its Providence based leadership? If the Conference USA teams get behind this proposal, then they can have their cake and eat it too. They get a shot at an automatic BCS spot without having to change their conference affiliation or pay an exit fee. Down the road they will still get to play the Big East teams not only in the playoffs but also during the regular season as some sort of cross conference schedule is set up.

Another thing to consider is who is representing the Big East in the negotiations. The other commissioners will have to talk real slow to John Marinatto so he can understand he has lost game, set, and match.

Comment by John In South Carolina 10.25.11 @ 5:32 pm

Tackle, the $10 mill kicks in when the first new school joins the BE. Hasn’t happened, so WVU is only saddled with $5 mill.

Comment by steve 10.25.11 @ 6:15 pm

With Pitt, Syracuse & now the Hoopies leaving the BigEast, the conference is now officially on life support. Why would anyone, from like 2000 miles away(BSU,AF,UH & SMU) want to join it?

To play Rutgers?
To play Uconn?
To play USF?
Let’s see who’s left.
Oh yea,
To play Cincy at Nippert?
Or to L-ville at Pizza Stadium?

There’s no way they can sell the BCS on keeping the AQ for this collection of C-USA teams.

Comment by EMel 10.25.11 @ 6:20 pm

just read on ESPN. WVU would still only pay $5 million to exit. The fee doesn’t ratchet up to $10 million until another member joins.

So they are escaping before the price of leaving jail goes up.

ESPN reports that West Virginia’s invitation to the Big 12 is not conditional on Missouri. The only questions are whether Missouri stays or if they stay at 10 or expand to 12. The only chance that they stay at 10 is if Missouri goes, because with WVU they would be at 11. My guess is that they will expand to 12 and that they will add Louisville and BYU. It does not appear that there is a chance in hell that Missouri stays. That brings me to the other issue, The Big East doesn’t look very viable without West Virginia and with Louisville waiting in the wings it’s probably gone in a season or two. Also Notre Dame will have to find somewhere else for their Olympic sports to play and there does not appear to be any takers, without football.

Comment by Justinian 10.25.11 @ 7:21 pm

Swofford at the ACC looks like a genius, not to mention the home run that Nordy and Steve hit.

Grab Pitt and ‘Cuse, get to a safe #14, with teams that fit geographically, academically, and bring football traditions (hopefully soon with this team), and two basketball powerhouses.

Both have played a lot of these teams over the years, fit right in!!!

We can argue ad nauseum about this, but, they also beat the Big 10 to Pitt and Cuse. Not as the 13th or 14th maybe, but, I said it back then, and I say it now, Rutgers and UCONN do not fit the Big 10.

A lot of people said, “oh, the Big 10 wants Rutgers to get the NYC market and the money”.
It is about money, but there is also a certain “do they fit” that has to be addressed.
They just don’t, whereas Pitt and Cuse’ do.

So, Swofford grabs the two of us, gets to a comfortable *14, and now sits and waits. If it does ever go to 16, he can try for the ND/UCONN thing, if not, then UCONN and whoever could slide right into the east coast league.

He doesn’t take a chance on getting “stuck” with 4 stinkers, maybe only two, maybe only one, and maybe none if ND/UCONN.

The Big 10 and SEC of all people, if they wanted to go to 16, could end up having to take a clunker.

First order of business for Swofford in the next couple of years, yank that 30 million dollar exit fee up to 50 and cement it. Just in case Va Tech or Clemson would ever have wandering eyes.

Oh, back to one point about Buttgers. If Buttgers and the New York City market were the be all, end all, and a financial bonanza…………….. how come the Big 10 or anyone else hasn’t taken them allready????

Comment by Dan 10.25.11 @ 9:47 pm

One more. Some of you had said you heard ND could end up in Big12 for all sports except football.

Not questioning, I’m sure you read it somewhere, but, after thinking about it, you think Texas will let ND in for everything but football???

Just doesn’t seem like Texas’ style……allthough if it means more money for them from their other sports, maybe they would.

Seems like they would not have another member in the conference anywhere, with the same status, or actually, a little above.

We’ll see, I guess.

Comment by Dan 10.25.11 @ 9:50 pm

ND screwed the BIG EAST and JM let it happen. Nordy and Pederson look all the better today for keeping PITT from dangling like Rutger, UCONN, CINCY, UofL, and USF.

All of them should jump at the trifecta (BE, MW, CUSA) merger and then tell ND to get lost.

They better do something because if the B12 were smart they would expand their “footprints” into the N.E. and swallow up Rutgers and UCONN before SWAFFORD gets them.

Sorry to see the BE go but with WVU now leaving the priest from providence has been called to say the last rights.

Comment by PittFanInAtlanta 10.25.11 @ 9:58 pm

Curious to see where Graham’s resolve takes him when, not if, Tino wilts under major heat from UConn Wed. night. How easy is it to game plan Pitt now…basically, have five guys follow Ray Graham from the moment he steps off the bus until he gets back on it, take away Tino’s 3 yard swing/dump passes, then bring your d-linemen after him like he was a steak dinner.

I bet UConn’s linemen get hard ons watching game film of our offense. If he completes more than one 15-20 yard pass in the first half, I’ll be beside myself with joy. If we see the standard M.O. play out and he has 2-3 picks and little O movement by the second half, can Graham swallow his pride and put Meyers in? As Colonel Klink’s colleague might have said, ‘vely interestink’.

Sadly, my money is he leaves him in for the 4th pick or they cart him off the field in a wheelbarrow before we see Meyers…but hope I’m wrong!

Comment by Matt N. 10.25.11 @ 10:11 pm

Yeah, I’ll miss the Big East as well. But as one writer said earlier, before the 1st ACC expansion, it was the Big East with the big eastern footprint from Florida to Boston. Things were just not managed well. Last one to leave, please turn off the lights.

Comment by Justinian 10.25.11 @ 10:13 pm

I just read a report that WVU will not have to pay the 10 million dollar exit fee, because it does not go into affect until the Big East expands. So the penalty will remain at 5 million until Navy, Air Force, or another team agrees to join the conference.

You are correct sir, Buttgers would have been gobbled up by the Little 12 if they would have added substantial value to them. (they do not)
All the variables and income possibilities were worked out ad nauseum by the L1G, rest assured.
I’m sure the ACC ran the numbers as well.

Apparently the NYC market is ever elusive. Syracuse in all likelihood delivers more of it than anyone else other than the Domers.

Comment by EMel 10.25.11 @ 10:53 pm

It would be great if the L1G ends up with Kansas State, Kansas, Cincy & L-ville.

If Mizzou goes as expected to the SEC, where else does the L1G turn to to get to 16. They’ve already said ‘NO’ to Mizzou already anyway.

They probably think they can still get Texas & Oklahoma, but that also entails taking TT & Okie State. Two tier 3 schools.

And of course the L1G’s eternal hope is to land ND. Sorry, but I don’t believe ND wants to be in a league with such lame division names. Leaders & legends. Or is it Lenders and Laggards? lol

Comment by EMel 10.25.11 @ 11:01 pm

When the Hoopies go to the Big 12, the Post-Gazette can quit covering them, as well as the Pgh. TV stations. I mean why not?

Goodbye Hoopies, I will miss your toothless grin.
🙁

Comment by EMel 10.25.11 @ 11:03 pm

EMel, I think to really get a sizable portion of the New York City market you would need to have Syracuse, Rutgers, and UConn. There is no single college team that New Yorkers identify with like Ohio State in Ohio. I think the Big Ten leadership was asleep at the wheel and the ACC moved and jumped on the best options available, Pitt and Syracuse. Apparently, according to the article in the Boaton Globe, the Big 12’s interest percipitated the quick action they took.

See my post above. ND would deliver the NYC & NJ & Boston & all other areas with a certain religious group that dominates the area.

If the ACC would be so fortunate, the TV money would go out of sight. And the ACC hoops tourny would be in MSG at least once every 3 years.

Comment by EMel 10.25.11 @ 11:09 pm

Word from a reliable source in ND administration, if ND joins any conference it will be to the B1G. ND already plays four B1G teams every year and the geography works for them as well as the other B1G schools.

Pitt is set with the ACC, let’s be grateful that Nordy and Peterson were proactive and got Pitt into a conference they can be competitive in for football and basketball as well as the “Olympic” sports. HTP! Beat UCONN! 🙂

Comment by MariettaMike 10.26.11 @ 7:23 am

CORRECTION to above post: ND plays three B1G teams annually. Counting Pitt in the ACC, ND plays five ACC teams this year and four next year. Maybe my reliable source is putting me on… :-{

Comment by MariettaMike 10.26.11 @ 7:31 am

ND plays USC, Mich, Mich St and Purdue every year. They play BC and Pitt more often than not, and has played Navy every year since the 80s. They have played more ACC teams lately so maybe there is some connection there, but as usual, don’t believe anything until it is formally announced

Comment by wbb 10.26.11 @ 7:55 am

@Originalether, good link. Battle Royale between WVU and Louisville. Ya, I’ll bet it’s nasty, no one wants to be left out.

More kudos to Nordy and Steve every time you see something like this, and know, could have been us.

Simple thing, would be for Big12 to take both and BYU and get to 12.

Problem with that, Big12 going to 12 really adds no more security to that conference, that conference could break up at any time. So, in their minds, if 12 doesn’t cement us together, why split the pie up even more??

ACC sitting beautifully at 14. Open for a couple new teams someday if needed. In the meantime, 14 is a great number to sit at, and be done if thats what it ends up being.

Steve Pederson schedules 2 weeknight home games this year for football. Only Mac and Sun Belt teams play on Wednesdays ususally. I can’t go becausae I have to wake up at 5 am for work. Thanks Steve for wasting my season ticket money, embarrasing the university for lots of empty seats on national tv, (10,000 is my prediction for tonight) and for being a cheapskate.

Comment by AJ 10.26.11 @ 12:30 pm

@AJ, thank Steve for making sure we’re not in this conference limbo. The Big East is partially to blame for this b/c they want to be on primetime TV.

Comment by The Incline 10.26.11 @ 12:36 pm

I’ve always had issues with the number of weeknight games Pitt has had over the past few years. I would have to believe that this has much to do with pleasing ESPN since Pitt usually is the highest watched or the 2nd highest watched team in the BE.

Comment by wbb 10.26.11 @ 12:38 pm

The Hoopies give WVU a black eye, but some may be in for a shock when Pitt visits College Park, MD. College Park is essentially a DC suburb and not the hillbilly country, yet PG County debated legislation to ban couch burning in response to Terps celebrations. They regularly need riot cops after big games too.

I don’t really care what they do outside the stadium– it bugs me more that they regularly rush the court after wins, which is just tacky. Broadcasts are careful to mute obscene crowd chants.

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 10.26.11 @ 12:46 pm

The act of rushing the court should be a spontaneous response to an exciting ending .. like Ramon hitting a 3 pointer at the buzzer vs WVU or Gibbs doing the same vs Providence .. (note that the Zoo has never rished the court.)

Syracuse set the standard for court rushes when they beat us in a close one back in their national title year. They hit the go-ahead shot with about 4 second left to go up by 2, and Pitt inbounded right away and threw a shot up at the buzzer (court rush No. 1), only to have a couple seconds put back on the clock for Pitt’s final timeout.

Then Pitt inbounded the ball and Brandon Kight threw up a desperation shot from about half court (court rush no. 2) … only to see that shot go in alhough it may have been shot after the buzzer. So, everyone just stood around for a few minutes while the refs checked out the replay .. and when the shot was nullified, they rushed the court for the 3rd and final time .. losing all of the spontaneous celebration effect.

Comment by wbb 10.26.11 @ 12:57 pm

I think you can be unhappy with Pederson for many things (btw, Dokish has an interesting review of Pederson at link to panthersprey.blogspot.com), but scheduling weeknight games is probably not one of them. The weeknight schedule is dictated by ESPN as part of the contract with the Big East Conference. Since Pederson is at least partially responsible for getting Pitt out of the Big East, maybe we should be thanking him…

BTW, I hate the weeknight games also!

Win the game, scream, cheer, cut the press clippings, but for the sake of the players/coaches safety and the general douchiness of it…stay off the court!

The Katrina shirts in question had an outline of the state of West Virginia on the front, with the words “Kicking ass since 1863”. On the back was an outline of Louisiana, with the words “Relying on FEMA since 2005”.

I’m guessing they were going for offensive, funny and creative. As usual, they only succeeded with offensive.
