September 29, 2011

Here comes our third game in 12 days.  Not a great schedule when you are struggling and coming off close back to back losses.  In both games against Iowa and ND only three points and one or two missed opportunities kept us from a win.  The two games were almost polar opposites in how we played our opponents,  against Iowa our offense was clicking for three quarters until the bearings seized up in the fourth quarter and our defense forgot that the game really is 60 minutes long.  A 21 point deficit was not insurmountable for the Hawkeyes as they came back to swing the momentum and take the win.

In contrast, the ND game was a close, defensive game on both sides, full of penalties by both teams and missed chances to extend a small lead by PITT to secure the win.  We had a last quarter drive when down by three points but ended up going backwards at an alarming rate when close to FG range that would have tied the game.

In both cases it was apparent that this PITT team just doesn’t know how to close out games and can’t understand what it actually takes to win against a good opponent.  We’ll find out if we learned anything by midnight tonight when our game against the University of South Florida has finished.

USF has a fine offense, ranked high nationally in scoring at 46 ppg (10th), total offense (10th), rushing offense 228 ypg(20th) and passing offense at 295 ypg (23rd).  I saved the best for last there and hope that isn’t ruining your morning coffee break.  Throw in the fact that USF is also 15th against the run on defense and things look like they can’t get any worse.

On the national stage PITT comes in at …well, basically nowhere and in fact hits triple digit rankings in two categories; passing defense at 115th and net punting at 106th.  The best of the rest, if you want to call it that, is our 35th ranked rushing defense at 106 ypg.

So, what does this mean for this evening?  Well, on paper it means we are about to get our ass kicked.

But Todd Graham believes we are ‘this far” from making the magic happen on both offense, with Sunseri seeing the light all of a sudden, and on defense where our opponent’s QBs dreams of leading the nation in passing by are made.

The fact that we have heard the same refrain from Graham since the afternoon of September 3rd isn’t important; what is meaningful is the fact that this time he really, truly means it. He really, truly does! Finally the kids are getting the systems down and are ready to get out there and really execute as envisioned.  Except for the OL of course, that may be a sticking point.

   DiPaola of the T-R has some great quotes from Lucas Nix,  remember him, our star Offensive Lineman?,  detailing what ills the OL;  “I figured line play is line play,” Nix said, “but there is a lot of different stuff involved in this. I figured we’d have it down by now, but it’s obviously more complicated than I thought.”   Not too bad, it only took six months after he first saw the new line play schemes to realize how different it was.  He goes on to explain more fully;

“Last year, we would make a call and pick up a blitz,” he said. “This year, we are stepping back and reading it out and picking it up as we go.

“Last year, we were able to (make a pre-snap call) because we weren’t in this type of offense. We had time to get to the line and read a defense. This year, it’s a lot faster. It’s a matter of us just getting back and reading it on the fly. That’s what’s tough for us right now.”

All kidding aside, this transition has to be tough for the OL and it certainly isn’t just Nix having a hard time with it.  But as tough as the OL is having it, this is just as hard for every other player who was recruited, taught and played under the previous coaching staff and their way of doing things.  Fans can gripe all they want about the fact that college players should be smart enough to pick up the changes, but I think we bury our head in the sand if we don’t recognize this issue as a real factor in what we are seeing so far this season.

My heartburn is that I’m not nearly as optimistic as Graham and the players are that this problem, widespread problem at that, is going to magically be resolved over the course of this year.  I don’t think Graham can be more honest about what is happening out on the field.  He’s pretty much just told it like it is; the fact that there is a breakdown on both the coaching staff’s part in teaching the new systems and the players in being able to understand and apply those teachings in the games.

The scariest part is that Graham has mentioned problems across the board with not understanding roles and responsibilities.  No group of players has been immune it seems, which leads one to believe it is systemic in nature and can only be fixed by changing those systems in peril.  Ain’t going to happen folks, no matter how intelligent I try to be when explaining it.

Graham is locked in for 2011 and no matter how much he says he is simplifying the approach; it is still vastly different than anything these kids have worked before.  This is the horse he rode in on and the one he will ride into battle, no matter how hobbled it may be.

So – how does that impact our game against USF this evening?  Here’s how; they have a QB who has led that team for four years now and done a good job in doing so.  He’s having a career year this season and has all the confidence in the world, as do his teammates in him.

Stand by for heavy rolls as he rips us up tonight.  The problems we have in our back eight pass coverage, specifically our four, (or three, or five depending on how confused they are) linebackers is going to be like crack cocaine to USF’s passing game.  They will get a taste early (“The first one’s free!!”) and then they’ll keep coming back for more and more.  USF has given up five total sacks this season so the supposed strength of our pass defense, DL pressure, will be minimized.  We aren’t advanced enough in our progress to overcome these fundamental problems that has plagued us in each game so far this year and against lesser opponents than USF.

Offensively we could  come around a bit as the passing game may smooth out a little,  but I don’t expect it to be able to carry the day anytime soon so that won’t be enough for us to outscore USF, which will take a lot of points.  Our running game, the most overrated part of our offense, will fall short and it will be ugly out there.

Sorry, I’m not optimistic at all about this match.  I think USF deserves it #16 ranking this time and shows why against PITT tonight.

38-17 USF

What are your predictions?

From what we’ve seen so far, I’m not encouraged. Can Graham rally the troops? He needs a win to keep the wolves away. I can hear the naysayers already. Another National TV game oboy.

Let’s Go Pitt.

How will Tampa Bay;s miraculous comeback affect the Bulls? Will they br emotionally exhausted because of Longoria’s heroics or will they be inspired to never say die? Whayever!! Pitt has to play their Best game to win. Are you ready, offensive line? Rev. George in Columbus

best offense in BE vs. worst defense in BE. Rising improving QB in BJ Daniels vs. …Tino. If USF puts 8 in box or some defense to shut down Ray, then we will be in big trouble with depleted O-line and Tino at QB.

maybe Tino shocks us all and plays lights out. Maybe Pitt has USF’s number and shuts down Daniels. Maybe I should drink less

USF in a blowout 38-17, Sunseri’s slow decision making ability really shines in this game.

Comment by Dallas Panther 09.29.11 @ 8:39 am

Pitt wins tonight. Hook and Crook. 31-30. USF makes tons of errors, Tiny does enough to keep us in it, and our defense/ST makes a play to seal it. Maybe a late FG by Harper?

Setting us up nicely for a 52-12 blow out loss at Rutgers next week.

Also regarding options at QB…people need to realize that Tino is our only option at this point. Myers looks the part, but only started one year in HS and he barely threw the ball and his foot work was mediocre at best. Trey is a runt that ran the same system in HS, but can’t see over a D1 line to make a read and after a few real life D1 hits…will be injured beyond all belief. Gonzalez obviously got the speech that his QB days are numbered, so he hasn’t got it or prepared to learn it. Unfortunately, Tino is our only option at QB.

Moral of the story– if you’re a coach, find a QB priority #1. All great coaches find great QBs…losers like Wanny underestimate the importance of QB. Let’s hope TG regroups after a 5 win season and brings in a kid that starts immediately.

Comment by Pauly P 09.29.11 @ 8:44 am

This game could well define the season. While USF is a decent opponent, I doubt when the seasons shakes out they will be ranked. They should be one of the better teams in a very weak Big East, but one we should not be a home underdog to.
If “high octane” has not improved enough after four games to win this game, I think we have been delivered some bad gas. These players do not fit the system at all, and accommodations need to be made until TG can get his own style players here, especially at QB & CB. He will get it done, but not this year.
Hope I am wrong and a win here would certainly help.

Comment by Jimbo 09.29.11 @ 8:54 am

My buddy T-Square is driving up from Richmond to see this game. I think he’ll have better luck in the casino than the Panthers have against USF. It could be ugly. We could be at the craps tables by 10:30.

Comment by The Hagen 09.29.11 @ 9:20 am

I have no idea what our team will do in any game at this point. I really do think they are a few play away from being really good BUT those few play have cost us in the last two games.

USF if anything is unpredictable. They can shoot themselves in foot as well as the best of them.

The only thing I am sure of is that I will be at Tilted Kilts slamming $3 tall boy Millers at 4PM. I hope that helps the team pull out a win. 🙂

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 09.29.11 @ 9:23 am

USF is no different than Pitt. Once USF gets a lot of hype, they fall on their face. They got the hype now.

Daniels turns the ball over a couple of times. Jones returns a punt for TD. Defense scores a TD.

I say Pitt wins similar to USF win against ND.

23 -20 Pitt.

Comment by why me 09.29.11 @ 9:31 am

TG was totally sandbagging in the “preseason” non-conference games. Slows the offense to a crawl. Myers starts at QB. South Florida is confused on both sides of the ball. Their QB throws 3 picks and fumbles once. Pitt wins going away, 31 – 17. (Or maybe not).

Comment by 66Goat 09.29.11 @ 9:37 am

USF 31-24 as much as I want to pick Pitt I just havent seen anything so far this year to convince me they can pull out a close game.

Comment by toga toga toga 09.29.11 @ 10:12 am

I agree with toga and disagree with those thinking Pitt will win a close game– they don’t have a chance if it’s close.
Therefore…
Pitt 31 – USF 14!!

Comment by JW 09.29.11 @ 10:32 am

Up front: hope I am wrong. I will be in taking two aspirin and calling it a night by 9, USF big. Hope I am wrong because that will likely signal that Graham has lost the team, and the season. As I said in an earlier post, a loss will give Graham air cover to make the move at QB so many of you are lobbying for. A win, and Tino lives to fight another day.

Comment by wally 09.29.11 @ 10:47 am

I believe Pitt will squeak out a W, somehow. Things finally come together for the Defense and make the right plays…Tino throws two picks in the first half alone(and down 21pts), Trey comes in for the second half and scripts one of the best comeback wins in Pitt history…in OT.

Oakland goes crazy and beats up a pregnant woman in the process…oh no, that’s Morgantown.

Pitt wins with a Kevin Harper FG.

Comment by H.landPitt 09.29.11 @ 10:53 am

Im sorry guys but i am totally not sold on USF. Their only win of consequence is against ND the first game of the year.

A game in which the Irish outgained the Bulls 508 to 254 in total yardage.

ND:
Passing yds:391
Rushing Yds:117
Turnovers:5

USF:
Passing:128
Rushing:126
Turnovers:0

Final Score: 23-20

Their next three games were against Florida A&M, UTEP, and Ball State.

I do believe USF is a good team..but as you can tell many of those offensive and defensive rankings are ONLY because of the games against bad competition.

we’ll see. but i think Pitt squeaks it out 24-20.
lets go boys

Comment by George 09.29.11 @ 11:45 am

First time poster on this blog, but have been reading it for a while now. Based on Rhyno’s assessment of the Notre Dame Game, I think Pitt has a very good shot to win this game. Believe me I have watched and been disappointed as much as everyone else & at this point I am very pessimistic about our season this year. But USF has played one heavy weight all year, and I can’t help but look at their offensive progression that game. Under 300 yards of offense? After watching the ND game, Pitt definitely had the better defense against a somewhat established ND offense. It’s gonna be on Pitt’s offense to score points in quarters 1-2-3 to prep for the infamous 4th qtr collapse of the Pitt defense. Scoring early (if only God is the one who knows they can at this point) will be key for Pitt today. And I’m sure Pitt’s defense will continue to improve. If this happens, I am readily expecting a Pitt W, and if not, same old story.

Comment by Tim 09.29.11 @ 11:47 am

Wally, I hope you are wrong saying the Graham may loose the team, although Nix’s comments shows there a few cracks in the armour. If you are a scout for a fast paced pro-offense (Patriots, Colts, etc.) Nix just said he won’t be able to play for you! I share the frustration many of you have with 4th qtr collapses, but the team is competetive even with the inherited weak talent (LB’s, CB’s, QB)that DW left. Hopefully the recruits that decide to go with TG next year and beyond will improve Pitt’s FB teams.

Comment by markp 09.29.11 @ 11:53 am

I think the Pitt Panthers will come to play and win the game. Reasons why, because they are better than they’v shown so far and it’s a MUST WIN for them. After letting two games slip away in the 2nd half tonight’s game has extra meaning.
Coming into the Iowa game, I thought that the Panthers would get blown out and they dominated the first three quarters before they blew the game. Against Notre Dame, I thought they had no chance and played them tough all the way with a terrific defensive performance. We lost the Notre Dame on the 2 yard line on 3rd and inches when didn’t go up the middle. I still think this team has talent and is a much better team than their 2 and 2 record would indicate. I think they will cut down on the mental errors and finally close out a big win.

Comment by Justinian 09.29.11 @ 12:07 pm

Tino starts adequately, then kills two key drives with some combo. of interception/bad sack taken/fumble; Graham yells at him but puts him in to start second half — offense does little and Graham, finally light dawning on him, puts Anderson in for whole 4th quarter…alas, likely too late, unless USF sputters somewhat or Pitt D. comes up big. First scenario, 21-10 USF; second, 24-17 Pitt. Either way, I drink and vent.

Comment by Matt N. 09.29.11 @ 12:08 pm

News Flash for USF game!!

Graham comes up with a revolutionary motivational tool for Sunseri in order for him to finally get the ball consistantly out quickly. Graham sneaks mini Taser into Tino’s jock strap for tonight’s game and applies a reminder, via a sideline remote control button, for him to get rid of the ball on time when needed.

The result, Tino’s tempo continues to speed up throughout the game and he suddenly, for unexplained reasons, develops a 40 inch vertical leap when he does hold the ball too long. He throws for over 300 yards and has no sacks, scrambles like a leaping Gazelle for another 75 yards and Pitt wins going away!!

Only significant injury by game’s end is Graham’s button finger develops severe cramping! And oddly, post game interview has Tino using his Mickey Mouse voice imitation to answer all questions????

We can hope, can’t we?

Comment by Pitts a Hit 09.29.11 @ 12:25 pm

ND is IMHO, by far the most talented (big, fast, deep) team we will face all season. They did not blow us out. Iowa, which is physical team, did not blow us out. Agree with Tony, I can’t say we win for sure, but I don’t see a blowout either.

Comment by TX Panther 09.29.11 @ 12:48 pm

I am an optimist I guess, but I think Pitt keeps the game close. As it is difficult me to bring myself to pick a Pitt loss, Pitt wins a close game: 31-28. The defense contains Daniels rushing and forces to win the game passing. Sunseri starts slow and has a big second half.

Hail to Pitt!

omment in response to Myers looks the part but can’t throw the ballHigh School: Lauded by Rivals as the top quarterback prospect in the state of Ohio following an exceptional senior year at St. Ignatius…arm strength earned national recognition by the scouting services…was rated No. 4 on Rivals’ “country’s strongest arm” list…named the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in the country by Rivals…threw for 2,127 yards and 20 touchdowns with only eight interceptions during his final season at St. Ignatius… completed 54% of his passes (140 of 261)…selected first team All-Ohio Division I (largest classification)… Northeast Lakes District Co-Offensive Player of the Year…led St. Ignatius to an 11-1 record and the regional semifinals of the Ohio Division I playoffs…played under Coach Chuck Kyle…selected to play in USA Football’s “Team USA vs. The World” game, which matched USA Football’s 2010 Junior National team (45 of the country’s top high school seniors) against a world team comprised of 45 of the best players aged 19 and under from eight other countries…also selected to play in the prestigious Big 33 Football Classic…also was a letterman in basketball and track and field. He did not start until his senior year because an upperclasman playing D1 football won the state and he had to wait his turn. There is no question that coming out of H.S. he was rated much higher than Tino, Gonzalea, and Trey(who was not rated by any scouting sources and offered no scholarships). I just read something that might shed light on Myers in the Post Gazette – he is in the TG doghouse because TG believes he is not putting out. I am ambivalent about Myer’s behavior if this is true. As a assumed competitor it would be very difficult to shallow someone of Trey Anderson’s size and minimial skill coming in awarded a scholarship at a D1 level through proxy and not having to compete for the position. Seriously stop the Trey mania – one pass in ND came when being rushed he heaved it as far as he could 20 yards in the area his reciever was supposee to be. The reciever had single coverage but the ball hung up there so long the saftey was able to come over and at the end of the play it appeared to be almost an incredible throw.
The other comment about his footwork was very strange since none of us has seen him play. Being the first team selection at QB from Ohio where QB’s throw the ball would seem to contradict that statement. Nonetheless I woould not play for TG if I could throw the ball downfield. Would Marino have come tto Pitt to play in an offense that called for him most of his passes to be 10 yards or less or to run the triple option. Blasphemy but he would have went to Penn State as will the better QB’s in Ohio and Western Pa.

I do hope that Anderson gets more than one series, and if he does only get one, maybe not deep in his own territory.

Have youth soccer games every Saturday so can almost never make it to games. Will be there tonight with my 9 yr old, though, so Tino and the boys better show up to play!

Comment by Carmen 09.29.11 @ 2:31 pm

Agree with DRW — Myers is a big time player who is wasting away on bench. Check out his youtube highlight reel and tell me he can’t move around…looks more athletic than Tino, and not just a little. Regarding arm and accuracy, he was slinging darts and looked like a man among boys. Again, Tino had about 8-9 snaps total under his belt before he became starter last year, so how come your experience arguments apply to others but not him?

Comment by Matt N. 09.29.11 @ 2:52 pm

Comment by FRANKCAN 09.29.11 @ 3:36 pm

Thanks Matt N. Myers was under the radar because no H.S. coach is going to pull his upperclass QB who is winning for an underclassman no matter how good, that is the reason he did not strat until his senior year. Pitt came in early and he appreciated the staff/later when it became evident he was a bigtime QB(Wisconsin, Ohio State, et,al.,) he held to his commitment. In hindsight what a mistake. Even if Weinstat did not survive no one envisioned hiring a coach for 2 million a year who no BCS experience, only been a head coach for six years with a 57% winning record, amd most importantly a philosophy so contrary to the city he was going to coach in and the atheletes in the area. Pittsburgh still prefers physcial football/take no prisoners. We honor our defensive players (Green,Jackson,Holloway,Reeves) as much as our offensive players. The same goes for our basketball team. When Holland came from N. Arizona with a reputation for high scoring and 3 poin shooting he realized that his talent and his recruits played a different style of ball. He adapted emphasized tough defense and won big and individually turned Pittsburgh from who cares to an enthusiatic college basketball town.

Comment by DRW 09.29.11 @ 3:51 pm

Despite TG on the sidelines and what has happened to this team in my opinion Pitt has more talent than USF that was obvious in the Iowa game. Further despite the ravings of the ND announcers on TV Pitt has as much talent as ND (15-12/even statistics). The problem is can any major college team win completeing 22 passes for 128 yards. This lack of verical passing will keep Graham from any 100 yard games unless he runs 40 times. Becuase of the talent Pitt does have (except at the 1 and 2 QB’s)they can win this game despite the offensive style and the coaching phoba’s of TG.

Comment by DRW 09.29.11 @ 4:01 pm

Disagree completely with the assumption that gun slinging quarterbacks will pass on TG’s offense. If you can throw the ball a ton and put up huge numbers and win games, NFL scouts will take notice. I don’t care if it’s all 10-20 yards a pop; you either have the arm strength or you don’t. Combines sort that kind of thing out pretty quickly. Factor that in with the possibility of playing sooner rather than later, and I think TG should be able to lure in some talent.

PS: A kid who can throw 50 yards with a flick of his wrist but can’t hit the broad side of a barn isn’t going to help much either. Rod Rutherford comes to mind – we used to joke that he made Larry Fitzgerald because Larry HAD to lay out for a lot of those throws 🙂

Trey better not be a runt, because the kid coming in next year, the Chad Voytik is roughly the same size and the same type of QB, Pauly P.

“Best of Week 5

Senior Chad Voytik, Cleveland: Voytik had his best game of the year against rival Red Bank Friday night. The University of Pittsburgh commit ran for 156 yards on 12 carries and was efficient in the passing game, completing 10 of 19 attempts for 117 yards. A 44-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave Cleveland (3-3) an early lead, and was one of four scores Voytik delivered with his feet. The Blue Raiders pillaged the Lions (4-1) at Red Bank, 41-6.”

“There is no question that coming out of H.S. he(Myers) was rated much higher than Tino, Gonzalea, and Trey(who was not rated by any scouting sources and offered no scholarships). I just read something that might shed light on Myers in the Post Gazette – he is in the TG doghouse because TG believes he is not putting out.”

Perhaps they don’t want people to see how well Myers passes. For that would really show how bad a passer Tinny truly is.

HTP!

EMel what i am saying is i think myers can run as good as tino and pass a hell of alot better i think he is in coachs dog house but every one says well he was a pro style QB so he cant fit ‘

well he may not run like voytik but he cant be mutch worse than tino and what he lacks in runing he more than makes up in passing.

and my point was dont say he cant play because he was rated a pro style because so is voytik.

PITT had better athletes in all but one game this year. Obviously against Buffalo & Maine.
For the first 3 quarters the Espn announcers mentioned more than once, the Pitt had more athletic players than Iowa and they were quicker.

Now last week, friend of ND, Suburban Urban repeated several times that PITT was inferior to ND. Now granted ND gets better recruiting classes. But that means diddly, as we’ve seen more than one team in the last 10 years when with a lot less than Top 25 recruiting classes.
Boise State, TCU & Utah come to mind immediately.
None of those teams won with Top 25 recruiting classes.

That being said, there is ONE COMMON DENOMINATOR in Pitt’s 4 games.

Our QB has been OUTPLAYED in EVERY one of the 4 games. Funny, but none of these sportswriters,
radio hosts or whoever who cover Pitt football, seem to be able to grasp that. Or if they do, they don’t report on it.

Now that is strange.

Spot on with this write-up, I actually think this web site wants rather more consideration. I’ll in all probability be once more to read far more, thanks for that info.
