Here comes our third game in 12 days. Not a great schedule when you are struggling and coming off close back to back losses. In both games against Iowa and ND only three points and one or two missed opportunities kept us from a win. The two games were almost polar opposites in how we played our opponents, against Iowa our offense was clicking for three quarters until the bearings seized up in the fourth quarter and our defense forgot that the game really is 60 minutes long. A 21 point deficit was not insurmountable for the Hawkeyes as they came back to swing the momentum and take the win.
In contrast, the ND game was a close, defensive game on both sides, full of penalties by both teams and missed chances to extend a small lead by PITT to secure the win. We had a last quarter drive when down by three points but ended up going backwards at an alarming rate when close to FG range that would have tied the game.
In both cases it was apparent that this PITT team just doesn’t know how to close out games and can’t understand what it actually takes to win against a good opponent. We’ll find out if we learned anything by midnight tonight when our game against the University of South Florida has finished.
USF has a fine offense, ranked high nationally in scoring at 46 ppg (10th), total offense (10th), rushing offense 228 ypg(20th) and passing offense at 295 ypg (23rd). I saved the best for last there and hope that isn’t ruining your morning coffee break. Throw in the fact that USF is also 15th against the run on defense and things look like they can’t get any worse.
On the national stage PITT comes in at …well, basically nowhere and in fact hits triple digit rankings in two categories; passing defense at 115th and net punting at 106th. The best of the rest, if you want to call it that, is our 35th ranked rushing defense at 106 ypg.
So, what does this mean for this evening? Well, on paper it means we are about to get our ass kicked.
But Todd Graham believes we are ‘this far” from making the magic happen on both offense, with Sunseri seeing the light all of a sudden, and on defense where our opponent’s QBs dreams of leading the nation in passing by are made.
The fact that we have heard the same refrain from Graham since the afternoon of September 3rd isn’t important; what is meaningful is the fact that this time he really, truly means it. He really, truly does! Finally the kids are getting the systems down and are ready to get out there and really execute as envisioned. Except for the OL of course, that may be a sticking point.
DiPaola of the T-R has some great quotes from Lucas Nix, remember him, our star Offensive Lineman?, detailing what ills the OL; “I figured line play is line play,” Nix said, “but there is a lot of different stuff involved in this. I figured we’d have it down by now, but it’s obviously more complicated than I thought.” Not too bad, it only took six months after he first saw the new line play schemes to realize how different it was. He goes on to explain more fully;
“Last year, we would make a call and pick up a blitz,” he said. “This year, we are stepping back and reading it out and picking it up as we go.
“Last year, we were able to (make a pre-snap call) because we weren’t in this type of offense. We had time to get to the line and read a defense. This year, it’s a lot faster. It’s a matter of us just getting back and reading it on the fly. That’s what’s tough for us right now.”
All kidding aside, this transition has to be tough for the OL and it certainly isn’t just Nix having a hard time with it. But as tough as the OL is having it, this is just as hard for every other player who was recruited, taught and played under the previous coaching staff and their way of doing things. Fans can gripe all they want about the fact that college players should be smart enough to pick up the changes, but I think we bury our head in the sand if we don’t recognize this issue as a real factor in what we are seeing so far this season.
My heartburn is that I’m not nearly as optimistic as Graham and the players are that this problem, widespread problem at that, is going to magically be resolved over the course of this year. I don’t think Graham can be more honest about what is happening out on the field. He’s pretty much just told it like it is; the fact that there is a breakdown on both the coaching staff’s part in teaching the new systems and the players in being able to understand and apply those teachings in the games.
The scariest part is that Graham has mentioned problems across the board with not understanding roles and responsibilities. No group of players has been immune it seems, which leads one to believe it is systemic in nature and can only be fixed by changing those systems in peril. Ain’t going to happen folks, no matter how intelligent I try to be when explaining it.
Graham is locked in for 2011 and no matter how much he says he is simplifying the approach; it is still vastly different than anything these kids have worked before. This is the horse he rode in on and the one he will ride into battle, no matter how hobbled it may be.
So – how does that impact our game against USF this evening? Here’s how; they have a QB who has led that team for four years now and done a good job in doing so. He’s having a career year this season and has all the confidence in the world, as do his teammates in him.
Stand by for heavy rolls as he rips us up tonight. The problems we have in our back eight pass coverage, specifically our four, (or three, or five depending on how confused they are) linebackers is going to be like crack cocaine to USF’s passing game. They will get a taste early (“The first one’s free!!”) and then they’ll keep coming back for more and more. USF has given up five total sacks this season so the supposed strength of our pass defense, DL pressure, will be minimized. We aren’t advanced enough in our progress to overcome these fundamental problems that has plagued us in each game so far this year and against lesser opponents than USF.
Offensively we could come around a bit as the passing game may smooth out a little, but I don’t expect it to be able to carry the day anytime soon so that won’t be enough for us to outscore USF, which will take a lot of points. Our running game, the most overrated part of our offense, will fall short and it will be ugly out there.
Sorry, I’m not optimistic at all about this match. I think USF deserves it #16 ranking this time and shows why against PITT tonight.
38-17 USF
What are your predictions?
Just remember:
Pitt is a basketball school.
maybe Tino shocks us all and plays lights out. Maybe Pitt has USF’s number and shuts down Daniels. Maybe I should drink less
USF 28 Pitt 17
Setting us up nicely for a 52-12 blow out loss at Rutgers next week.
Also regarding options at QB…people need to realize that Tino is our only option at this point. Myers looks the part, but only started one year in HS and he barely threw the ball and his foot work was mediocre at best. Trey is a runt that ran the same system in HS, but can’t see over a D1 line to make a read and after a few real life D1 hits…will be injured beyond all belief. Gonzalez obviously got the speech that his QB days are numbered, so he hasn’t got it or prepared to learn it. Unfortunately, Tino is our only option at QB.
Moral of the story– if you’re a coach, find a QB priority #1. All great coaches find great QBs…losers like Wanny underestimate the importance of QB. Let’s hope TG regroups after a 5 win season and brings in a kid that starts immediately.
If “high octane” has not improved enough after four games to win this game, I think we have been delivered some bad gas. These players do not fit the system at all, and accommodations need to be made until TG can get his own style players here, especially at QB & CB. He will get it done, but not this year.
Hope I am wrong and a win here would certainly help.
USF if anything is unpredictable. They can shoot themselves in foot as well as the best of them.
The only thing I am sure of is that I will be at Tilted Kilts slamming $3 tall boy Millers at 4PM. I hope that helps the team pull out a win. 🙂
Daniels turns the ball over a couple of times. Jones returns a punt for TD. Defense scores a TD.
I say Pitt wins similar to USF win against ND.
23 -20 Pitt.
Therefore…
Pitt 31 – USF 14!!
I find his WIkipedia entry from 2009 comical at this point…
Oakland goes crazy and beats up a pregnant woman in the process…oh no, that’s Morgantown.
Pitt wins with a Kevin Harper FG.
A game in which the Irish outgained the Bulls 508 to 254 in total yardage.
ND:
Passing yds:391
Rushing Yds:117
Turnovers:5
USF:
Passing:128
Rushing:126
Turnovers:0
Final Score: 23-20
Their next three games were against Florida A&M, UTEP, and Ball State.
I do believe USF is a good team..but as you can tell many of those offensive and defensive rankings are ONLY because of the games against bad competition.
we’ll see. but i think Pitt squeaks it out 24-20.
lets go boys
Pitt 30
USF 17
Coming into the Iowa game, I thought that the Panthers would get blown out and they dominated the first three quarters before they blew the game. Against Notre Dame, I thought they had no chance and played them tough all the way with a terrific defensive performance. We lost the Notre Dame on the 2 yard line on 3rd and inches when didn’t go up the middle. I still think this team has talent and is a much better team than their 2 and 2 record would indicate. I think they will cut down on the mental errors and finally close out a big win.
Graham comes up with a revolutionary motivational tool for Sunseri in order for him to finally get the ball consistantly out quickly. Graham sneaks mini Taser into Tino’s jock strap for tonight’s game and applies a reminder, via a sideline remote control button, for him to get rid of the ball on time when needed.
The result, Tino’s tempo continues to speed up throughout the game and he suddenly, for unexplained reasons, develops a 40 inch vertical leap when he does hold the ball too long. He throws for over 300 yards and has no sacks, scrambles like a leaping Gazelle for another 75 yards and Pitt wins going away!!
Only significant injury by game’s end is Graham’s button finger develops severe cramping! And oddly, post game interview has Tino using his Mickey Mouse voice imitation to answer all questions????
We can hope, can’t we?
Hail to Pitt!
The other comment about his footwork was very strange since none of us has seen him play. Being the first team selection at QB from Ohio where QB’s throw the ball would seem to contradict that statement. Nonetheless I woould not play for TG if I could throw the ball downfield. Would Marino have come tto Pitt to play in an offense that called for him most of his passes to be 10 yards or less or to run the triple option. Blasphemy but he would have went to Penn State as will the better QB’s in Ohio and Western Pa.
Have youth soccer games every Saturday so can almost never make it to games. Will be there tonight with my 9 yr old, though, so Tino and the boys better show up to play!
just saying pro type look it up .
PS: A kid who can throw 50 yards with a flick of his wrist but can’t hit the broad side of a barn isn’t going to help much either. Rod Rutherford comes to mind – we used to joke that he made Larry Fitzgerald because Larry HAD to lay out for a lot of those throws 🙂

Trey better not be a runt, because the kid coming in next year, the Chad Voytik is roughly the same size and the same type of QB, Pauly P.
And Tinny is only an inch or so taller with no scrambling ability or any ability to throw off the run with any accuracy.
You want to lose, play Tino.
You want a chance to win now and certainly in the future, play Trey.

You are correct sir.
They lose this game tonight, I see them losing at Rutgers and then Utah comes to town and will destroy a totally demoralized team.
We have to win this game tonight gents.
“Best of Week 5
Senior Chad Voytik, Cleveland: Voytik had his best game of the year against rival Red Bank Friday night. The University of Pittsburgh commit ran for 156 yards on 12 carries and was efficient in the passing game, completing 10 of 19 attempts for 117 yards. A 44-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave Cleveland (3-3) an early lead, and was one of four scores Voytik delivered with his feet. The Blue Raiders pillaged the Lions (4-1) at Red Bank, 41-6.”

Excellent point, USF other than ND, has played 3 scrubs and since statistically ND was all over them in that game, USF’s other stats and national rankings are all just an illusion.
No reason at all after shutting down ND, we shouldn’t be able to shut down USF.
Yea,,,,I’d say he is a Dual Threat. haha
WELL GESS WHAT SO IS VOYTIK iread how he ran all over the place i am sure he will fit . but stop with myers wasa a pro style qb when he came out so is voytik and EMel you are melvinbennett right
I morphed into EMel. After asking if EJuan played against ND. Btw does anyone remember EJuan playing against ND??
He seemed to make somewhat of an impact against Iowa.

Sounds like a plan Matt
Comment by Pitts a Hit 09.29.11 @ 12:25 pm
LMAO, that’s about what it’s going to take bro.

Perhaps they don’t want people to see how well Myers passes. For that would really show how bad a passer Tinny truly is.
HTP!
well he may not run like voytik but he cant be mutch worse than tino and what he lacks in runing he more than makes up in passing.
and my point was dont say he cant play because he was rated a pro style because so is voytik.
For the first 3 quarters the Espn announcers mentioned more than once, the Pitt had more athletic players than Iowa and they were quicker.
Now last week, friend of ND, Suburban Urban repeated several times that PITT was inferior to ND. Now granted ND gets better recruiting classes. But that means diddly, as we’ve seen more than one team in the last 10 years when with a lot less than Top 25 recruiting classes.
Boise State, TCU & Utah come to mind immediately.
None of those teams won with Top 25 recruiting classes.
That being said, there is ONE COMMON DENOMINATOR in Pitt’s 4 games.
Our QB has been OUTPLAYED in EVERY one of the 4 games. Funny, but none of these sportswriters,
radio hosts or whoever who cover Pitt football, seem to be able to grasp that. Or if they do, they don’t report on it.
Now that is strange.
Yep I’m still here, and yes it’s much less to type than my old one.
Let’s Go Pitt.
