Bostick wrote a short article on the fact that PITT has four state championship QBs on the roster. Does that make anyone more comfortable about the QBs and the new offense? It’s a neat fact though but all we need is to have one who is a true BE champion QB this season.
From a blog in the Trib-Review we have another new recruit from the 2011 class – Juan Price. He replaces Ejuan Price. Like another PITT player who wanted his name…Dorsett… pronounced differently Price has asked for the change. Apparently he’s quicker and bigger also:
“Let me tell you, if you’re a quarterback, that ball better get out quick. He is lightning.” Plus, Price weighs 250 pounds, according to Patterson, even though he is listed at 235 in the Pitt media guide. “People don’t realize that,” Patterson said. “He is packed together.
Graham met with the team for 15 minutes after practice and then addressed the media. Referencing his already high expectations he says this: “Today we were somewhere around that 80% mark, which will get you about eight wins. The most important thing is what you get done on a daily basis.”
For the Tino Sunseri crowd Graham notices a difference: “The one thing that I have been very impressed with is just how much stronger Coach Griswold has gotten Tino Sunseri. Tino has actually done work but he has been getting stronger and has put a lot more velocity on his ball. The walk-on, Trey Anderson, has also been sticking out with me and I have been very impressed with him. He can make some throws and does a really good job.” Remember Trey Anderson was being recruited by Tulsa, and Todd Graham, last year so the staff is very familiar with him.
In a flashback to some fan’s complaints about our last big time receiver Graham lights a fire under Devin Street. “I challenge Devin. I think Devin is very inconsistent for his abilities. He should be one of the most prolific guys in the country, but he needs to bring it every day. The thing with our system is that it’s a timing system, so if you don’t run full speed on every route it throws the timing off. Street will get it together, he has to.
The Training Camp Insider site has some nice videos and there’s a good slideshow of today’s practice. There is also an interview with Hubie Graham about his being in the “H” or “3”-Back position.
Paul Zeise has been covering the camp in pretty good detail in his Redshirt Diaries. This note was especially nice to read “One of the highlights of the day was Dan Mason tackling Corey Davis during an inside run drill. Mason, who is not supposed to be doing much of anything yet, only knows how to play at one speed made a really nice play, got to the ball and made a tackle.” Mason got many congrats and got yanked right after the play – but it does show what type of kid he is.
It may just be me but it seems like the Post-Gazette is providing much more coverage of camp than they have in the past, especially Zeise’s blog. That, combined with the info the PITT SID team is putting out via the web, gives us a lot of PITT football info to digest. This morning the P-G ran an article on our new RB Zach Brown who talks about how the transfer came about… one of PITT’s selling point was a Masters program he is interested in. The T-R ran a similar story also.
Some breaking news! Wannstedt has grown a beard because he got tired of being called “The Statch”
And finally, we’ve a variation on the phrase “He can sure spin it!” as Zeise says this about Myers…”He can throw it around the yard with the best of them, though.”
I seem to remember him doing plenty of almost daily posts in his blog last year.
But will the consistency and execution in a new system with some new and inexperienced faces be good enough?
One of the reasons he is absent for so long is that he is given other assignments in the off-season by his boss who is a PSU grad. I’ve yet to see Musselman, who is the P-G PSU beatwriter, to be given any other assignment … but in fairness, P-G has a Pitt FB beatwriter and a BB writer (Fittipaldi.)
The other interestng thing about the interview was at the beginning when Ron Cook mentioned that Cignetti always thought Bostick was definite coaching material, Pat replied “that at this time, he wanted to stay in Pgh area around Pitt and was very intrigued by becoming part of the media” (in quotes but I’m sure parapharsed)
The rest of the interview was the ususal .. how hard the team worked in the off-season and how they bought into the new staff .. and that he thinks the Backyard Brawl will have a significant impact on who wins the BE. Also, Zac Brown is a brick house who punishes people.
If Tino was more of a runner, I’d like to see us line up in that Diamond Pistol formation and run the option!
Hmmmm. I didn’t realize that Brown was bigger than Henry Hynoski.
He rushed for over 10,000 yards in his first 10 professional seasons, a feat previously accomplished only by Barry Sanders.
Kevn Barlow was in answer to wbb – I know he played for 49ers, not sure where he went to high school.
