Training Camp – Day 3

Bostick wrote a short article on the fact that PITT has four state championship QBs on the roster.  Does that make anyone more comfortable about the QBs and the new offense?  It’s a neat fact though but all we need is to have one who is a true BE champion QB this season.

From a blog in the Trib-Review we have another new recruit from the 2011 class – Juan Price.  He replaces Ejuan Price.  Like another PITT player who wanted his name…Dorsett… pronounced differently Price has asked for the change.  Apparently he’s quicker and bigger also:

“Let me tell you, if you’re a quarterback, that ball better get out quick. He is lightning.”  Plus, Price weighs 250 pounds, according to Patterson, even though he is listed at 235 in the Pitt media guide.  “People don’t realize that,” Patterson said. “He is packed together.

Graham met with the team for 15 minutes after practice and then addressed the media.  Referencing his already high expectations he says this: “Today we were somewhere around that 80% mark, which will get you about eight wins. The most important thing is what you get done on a daily basis.”

For the Tino Sunseri crowd Graham notices a difference:  “The one thing that I have been very impressed with is just how much stronger Coach Griswold has gotten Tino Sunseri. Tino has actually done work but he has been getting stronger and has put a lot more velocity on his ball. The walk-on, Trey Anderson, has also been sticking out with me and I have been very impressed with him. He can make some throws and does a really good job.”  Remember Trey Anderson was being recruited by Tulsa, and Todd Graham, last year so the staff is very familiar with him.

In a flashback to some fan’s complaints about our last big time receiver Graham lights a fire under Devin Street.  “I challenge Devin. I think Devin is very inconsistent for his abilities. He should be one of the most prolific guys in the country, but he needs to bring it every day. The thing with our system is that it’s a timing system, so if you don’t run full speed on every route it throws the timing off.  Street will get it together, he has to.

The Training Camp Insider site has some nice videos and there’s a good slideshow of today’s practice.  There is also an interview with Hubie Graham  about his being in the “H” or “3”-Back position.

Paul Zeise has been covering the camp in pretty good detail in his Redshirt Diaries.  This note was especially nice to read “One of the highlights of the day was Dan Mason tackling Corey Davis during an inside run drill. Mason, who is not supposed to be doing much of anything yet, only knows how to play at one speed made a really nice play, got to the ball and made a tackle.”  Mason got many congrats and got yanked right after the play – but it does show what type of kid he is.

It may just be me but it seems like the Post-Gazette is providing much more coverage of camp than they have in the past, especially Zeise’s blog.  That, combined with the info the PITT SID team is putting out via the web, gives us a lot of PITT football info to digest.  This morning the P-G ran an article on our new RB Zach Brown who talks about how the transfer came about… one of PITT’s selling point was a Masters program he is interested in.  The T-R ran a similar story also.

Some breaking news!  Wannstedt has grown a beard because he got tired of being called “The Statch”

And finally, we’ve a variation on the phrase “He can sure spin it!” as Zeise says this about Myers…”He can throw it around the yard with the best of them, though.”

although we are all rooting for Mason’s successful return, Price definitely should help in his absence … we can all thank ‘The Vest’ for that one, although he certainly got his share from W PA over the last decade.

I somewhat disagree about Zeise, I feel that his fall camp coverage is typically outstanding while his coverage on the offseason and during the spring is usually almost nonexistant.

I seem to remember him doing plenty of almost daily posts in his blog last year.

Can’t wait to see these guys “impact the quarterback”

Comment by BnG 08.11.11 @ 9:16 am

I agree – a lot more info and exposure this training camp. The more I read and hear I believe the pieces are there for great success this year.

But will the consistency and execution in a new system with some new and inexperienced faces be good enough?

Chas, what beach is that in the picture?

AHH! nevermind it was an ad, but i guess i didnt scroll over the part that was clickable so i just thought you embedded a pic in the post…

when Zeise does write about Pitt FB, it is usually the most comprehensive articles you will find, and his blog (Redshirt Diaries) provides substantial insight from inside the lockerroom (so to speak.)

One of the reasons he is absent for so long is that he is given other assignments in the off-season by his boss who is a PSU grad. I’ve yet to see Musselman, who is the P-G PSU beatwriter, to be given any other assignment … but in fairness, P-G has a Pitt FB beatwriter and a BB writer (Fittipaldi.)

BnG – I did mean the Summer Training Camp. But you are correct, Zeise and the P-G will almost forget about PITT football over the offseason.

Pat Bostick on 93.7 The Fan in a couple of minutes 1:05

Comment by wbb 08.11.11 @ 1:01 pm

How unreal is Pat B!! Concerning the 13-9 game, he said “kinf of a defining moment of my life. I didn’t play well but Shady and our defense played lights out! …. One of the coolest moments of my life” He totally deflected any credit.

The other interestng thing about the interview was at the beginning when Ron Cook mentioned that Cignetti always thought Bostick was definite coaching material, Pat replied “that at this time, he wanted to stay in Pgh area around Pitt and was very intrigued by becoming part of the media” (in quotes but I’m sure parapharsed)

The rest of the interview was the ususal .. how hard the team worked in the off-season and how they bought into the new staff .. and that he thinks the Backyard Brawl will have a significant impact on who wins the BE. Also, Zac Brown is a brick house who punishes people.

Comment by wbb 08.11.11 @ 1:24 pm

After reading Zeise’s article on Zac Brown, I’m really excited to see him in action. If they do end up putting him and Graham on the field at the same time, things could get interesting.

If Tino was more of a runner, I’d like to see us line up in that Diamond Pistol formation and run the option!

Comment by BnG 08.11.11 @ 1:33 pm

who knows, with Gonzalez or Anderson, maybe they can run the triple option

Comment by wbb 08.11.11 @ 2:00 pm

Anyway you cut it, Zack Brown’s transfer in was a Godsend. Heaven forbid, but if Ray Graham goes down with an injury early we would have been left holding our pud regarding ANY running back with game experience. Now all of a sudden we’ve got ourselves a man who has been around college football for a longtime and apparently is built like a fire hydrant. Its been a long time since Pitt has had a running back with his size. I sure hope he can bring it. Him and Graham pounding it out together could be impressive.

What qb threw the 4 interceptions.

Comment by FRANKCAN 08.11.11 @ 3:08 pm

“Its been a long time since Pitt has had a running back with his [Brown’s] size”

Hmmmm. I didn’t realize that Brown was bigger than Henry Hynoski.

Comment by BigGuy 08.11.11 @ 4:36 pm

I said “running” back as in halfback rather than our “blocking” back Henry the rhino Hynoski. Yea,I know he carried the ball, any time we needed a sure 3 yards. I was speaking more of the backs that could take it to the house with an opening, not Rhino who was 3 yards and a cloud of dust kind of fullback.

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.11.11 @ 4:49 pm

Ah, c’mon, Dr. Tom. Admit it. You completely forgot about Henry who was both a runner and a receiver. Incidently the NJ paper had a nice article about him.

the RB from Peabody who played at Pitt in late 90s and had a decent 4-5 years for the 49ers had a good combination of speed and power …. forgot his name

Comment by wbb 08.11.11 @ 7:50 pm

How could I ever forget about Hynoski and his facial blackout warpaint that was right up there with “The Joker” makeup??

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.11.11 @ 8:50 pm

Was that Barlow?

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 08.11.11 @ 9:08 pm

Curtis Martin, Alderdice, heads above Barlow.

He rushed for over 10,000 yards in his first 10 professional seasons, a feat previously accomplished only by Barry Sanders.

Comment by steve 08.11.11 @ 9:50 pm

Curtis Martin wasn’t a big power back (I think he weighed about 190 his freshman year). Also, didn’t Jim Brown rushed for 12,000 yards and only play 9?

Kevn Barlow was in answer to wbb – I know he played for 49ers, not sure where he went to high school.

After reading your blog post I browsed your website a bit and noticed you aren’t ranking nearly as well in Google as you could be. I possess a handful of blogs myself and I think you should take a look here: http://dominateseowithwordpress.com You’ll find it’s a very nice tool that can bring you a lot more visitors. Keep up the quality posts
