Voytik Commits (Probably)

Trying to get full confirmation, but I’m seeing Tweets that Chad Voytik has given Pitt a verbal.

Loading…

Confirmed.

Pitt landed its most high-profile recruit from the Class of 2012 when four-star quarterback Chad Voytik of Cleveland (Tenn.) High School gave Panthers coaches his verbal commitment, Voytik’s father Dr. Gary Voytik said this morning.

Whoo-hoo!

Makes my day! Shell is next.

COOL!!!! Live in Chattanooga and Cleveland is about 25 miles east. Told the wife if he commits to Pitt we will be going to some Cleveland Blue Raiders. Go Pitt and Go Voytik!!!

Comment by Kenny 07.28.11 @ 12:26 pm

Let’s keep this rollin’ with some more high profile recruits!!!!!!!

Comment by Pittastic 07.28.11 @ 1:12 pm

Chris Peak interviewed him and he said

“I’m going to help get the recruiting class built up. We’re looking to have the best class in the Big East, and I’m ready to take that and run with it and help get the players to compete for a championship.”

My 1st call is to Bisnowaty, then Shell, then Noah Spence

I don’t know this kid’s rep. Any you tube videos or other recruiting stuff that highlight his talents that I can view? BTW, anybody know what type of doctor his Dad Dr. Gary Voytik is?

Comment by Dr. Tom 07.28.11 @ 2:57 pm

Elite 11 QB with 4.6 speed and a quick release! Huge!!!

Comment by Monte 07.28.11 @ 3:05 pm

I am glad we got voytik but he is five 11 or five 10 not six 1 is why he is here and not at ucla or ohio state or ND .

Comment by FRANKCAN 07.28.11 @ 3:15 pm

His height is the reason he isn’t a 5-star top 5 recruit nationally. The kid certainly doesn’t lack the skills

Comment by BCPITT 07.28.11 @ 3:20 pm

Those programs don’t have the system for height challenged QB’s. They need tall QB’s to run their pro-set systems receiving the snap under the center. With high octane, you don’t need to be tall. You need to be quick on your feet, fast release, strong enough arm to occasionally stretch the D, and high football IQ. Voytik has all those tangibles. If this kid was 6’4″, he might just be rated 5-star.

Comment by TX Panther 07.28.11 @ 3:21 pm

Is height the only reason that he has no offers from any good schools? I am very excited about him. I just don’t know why a guy with as much good press as him doesn’t have any offers from anywhere that is any better than Pitt.

Comment by kanyon40 07.28.11 @ 3:33 pm

Maybe some of the ‘good’ schools already have their QB and/or they aren’t good enough in the academics department. Voytik let it be known that academics mattered…he’s Pre-Med. Probably scared off every SEC school except Vandy.

Comment by TX Panther 07.28.11 @ 3:44 pm

I think Miss St is a good school. They at least have shown the ability to rise to challenge of a big game and on more than one occassion knock off some of the top teams in the country. That is something Pitt hasn’t been able to do for a long long time.

Do we wish he was 6’4″? Yeah we do, but you take what you can get, this guy has a quick release, can throw the bomb with accuracy and is one of the best QB prospects in the entire country. He’ll be fine.

Comment by BnG 07.28.11 @ 3:49 pm

I think Clemson and Virginia are at least reputable programs as well. It’s not as if he only had offers from schools like Temple, Marshall, and Akron. You have to realize that a mobile QB that is 5’9 185 lbs isn’t going to draw interest from the top flight schools that don’t utilize a system like the one Graham does.

Comment by BCPITT 07.28.11 @ 3:57 pm

6’4″ QBs are usually not that mobile either.

Comment by jk 07.28.11 @ 4:29 pm

How tall was Doug Flutie? Ty Detmer? Those guys seemed to work our pretty well…

Comment by Monte 07.28.11 @ 5:25 pm

What is the criteria for saying Vanderbilt, Clemson, Virginia,Louisville, Mississippe State etc are nor “good” schools. Boy, SOME people are just never satisfied. Personally, I am ELATED that Chad Voytik is a PANTHER!!!. Rev. George in Columbus, Ohio

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 07.28.11 @ 5:28 pm

The QBs at Missouri and Kansas a few years ago were under 6′ and both were extremely productive .. in the right offenses for them.

And who was productive this past decade than Pat White (mostly as runner of course.)

Comment by wbb 07.28.11 @ 7:26 pm

Here I come being a naysayer again, but remember, Anthony Gonzalez was just as hyped as Voytik is and Gonzalez probably be a permanent backup. It doesn’t mean this kid won’t be good, but give it time before we retire his jersey since he’s only played high school ball so far. By the way, I still predict Pitt goes 7-5 to 8-4 and that won’t cut it on or off the field. It’s the Big East. I was a teen when Pitt was going (11-1) 3 years in a row in the early 80’s. I don’t expect to see that happen again anytime soon. Sorry for the dire prediction, but I’ve really lost my faith in the program these days.

Comment by beanboy 07.28.11 @ 7:27 pm

Yeah, the height thing may have kept some of the big-time programs a little cool on him (or it might not have, who knows?), but I think it’s pretty clear height isn’t a huge limiting factor in college football, particularly in the type of scheme Graham runs.

Comment by Jeff 07.28.11 @ 9:04 pm

@beanboy, you ever consider an Rx for Prozac? Downer, do you complain about a sunny day because it’s too hot also?

Comment by Dr. Tom 07.28.11 @ 9:46 pm

yes the hight is what kept the big schools away but the kid is dam good glad to have him and as was pointed out he will be good in our new system

Comment by FRANKCAN 07.28.11 @ 11:01 pm

Good pickup with Voytik. I keep hearing about his release and how great it is. Hopefully hes good at everything else too.

Pitt needs to get on Robert Foster from Central Valley ASAP! 2013 recruit, probably a future at WR in college but this kid is going to be a national recruit when the time comes. Heres his highlights: link to youtube.com

As a pastor myself, I have to admit to being surprised at the most negative response to my honest question coming from Rev. George.

I didn’t downplay the kid’s skills and I didn’t say I wasn’t satisfied. I asked a serious question about why this kid is rated so high but doesn’t have offers from schools better (and by better, I meant better football programs) than Pitt. I wasn’t trying to say he isn’t a good get. I was wanting to know if anyone had any information on him or insight into why such a highly rated QB wasn’t on big name school’s lists. And on the list of scholarship offers, they are all schools right around where Pitt is.

There was no Ohio St, Florida, Alabama, Texas, etc., etc., etc..

So yes Rev. George, I am satisfied that we landed him. I was just looking for some legitimate (and charitable) insight into my question.

Comment by kanyon40 07.29.11 @ 1:40 pm

Really beanboy, calm down. A new offense, new coach, new excitement!!! Ya, we all know, we’ll see it when we see it on the field, but, really, give it a year or two anyhow????????

I suppose Pitt hoops sucks too, damn those kids and Dixon, never could get to the final four, screw em’!!!! LOL

Comment by Dan 07.30.11 @ 2:05 am

As for as the other schools, which means absolutely nothing, but, does give a little insight into who is looking at the kids.

The recruits up to this point, had other schools such as MAC schools, Sun Belt schools and Temple, Delaware etc. etc.!!!

So, actually, Vandy, Clemson, Virginia, Louisville etc. etc. looks pretty good to me.

I will say this again, the guy has only been coach for 7 months. I believe he put a half decent class together on the run, and this one still has time to turn out well.

Even with that, the guy deserves a few years to get to know the coaches around the area, and some time for the kids to see what kind of show he’s gonna run.

With the type of offense he runs, I’m not so sure we’re going to be going head to head in recruiting against Alabama, Ohio St. or Southern Cal. in the future.

Comment by Dan 07.30.11 @ 2:11 am

Ha ha, do we want to recruiting with the three schools I mentioned above, two of them have had serious scandals, and I believe Alabama has been looked into???

Comment by Dan 07.30.11 @ 2:12 am

I don’t know why my question has been so misunderstood or hard to follow. I am not complaining about the recruiting class nor am I complaining about Voytik. I was asking a question about rankings and how a kid is ranked and why a kid with such high rankings only has middle of the road schools from good conferences looking at him. It isn’t a slam on the kid or on Todd Graham. It isn’t some doom and gloom prediction for the future of this class or our program. I am thrilled that he committed. I was simply asking if someone had deeper insight into the reason for the two parts of my question: 1. high rating. 2. offers from programs no better off than we are. I don’t know why so many have to assume that this is anything other than an honest question about how these ratings work and what would cause this?

Comment by kanyon40 07.30.11 @ 2:39 pm

Kanyon40, because we’re used to a lot of downers on here. My apologies for not interpreting. Just saw a little of your thoughts and posted.

I don’t know. Well, with Voytik, apparently he is top 5 material, but, he is only 6’0″, so, not a Marino or Elway type. Michigan’s, Ohio St.’s, Texas, they all have guys on their scope, that have Voytik’s skills, plus, 4 or 5 inches.

So, as good as he could be, if you have 5 other guys with his skills that are 6’5″, you wouldn’t even look at him. Not a knock on him, he may win you a championship, but, just the way it is.

Maybe in a few years, we won’t look at him????

I don’t know, the star system is a big mess, but, you can get a general idea of how a kid may be.

Have seen many 5 stars bomb out, and many 2 stars be the teams best player.

You can’t schmooze it away though, if you had to have a team full of 4 or 5 star guys, or a team with 2 or 3 star guys, I’d error on the side of the 4’s and 5’s. Odds are with you.

Remember, Coach Graham has only been here 7 months, he needs to get to know the area high school coaches, let the kids see what kind of team he is going to run, etc. etc. I’d give him a couple years to make an impression.

As for the school choices, same thing I guess. The kids want to play, and be winners, why we’re in the middle of the pack.

Just suggesting here, only to make a point, if Coach Graham goes,
10-3
11-2
10-3
12-1
11-2 the next five years, with several big bowl games, we will have nothing but 4 and 5 star recruits, and a couple 3’s that we will look down on.

Ones that got away will say “other” schools, will be the Ohio St’s Alabama’s , LSU’s.

I think the biggest part, is the most simple. Kids want to play on a top 20 team, go to a big bowl game, on national tv, and be able to say, “I play ball for #######” with some strut and pride.

Maybe that makes up %75 of it, then maybe someon’es mom or dad went to school there, maybe they had an “in” with a coach, maybe liked the school and team since they were little, and last but not least, for a few, the right academic school, these make up the rest.

Deep insight? Have none, just a college football fan for 40 years. If we win a lot of games, go to big bowl games, our stock will move up.

Good evening to you. Also, I read your comment, you were asking a legitimate question. Excellent student, elite qb camp, one of top performers there, I would say the simple answer is, yes, height!!!???

Comment by Dan 07.31.11 @ 10:06 pm

The converse, of course, is Coach Graham lays an egg in the next few years, we will be at rock bottom!!! LOL

Second to rock bottom, nothing worse than Johnny Majors II !!!!!!!

I’m cautiously optimistic!!!
