Badger Watching

Seems that Zach Brown may not be the only thing Wisconsin sends Pitt’s way. How about the possibility of a home-and-home with the Badgers? (Hattip to Brad)

University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said this week that attempts are being made to add Pittsburgh and Kansas State to future non-conference schedules.

Alvarez declined to offer specifics, but confirmed that talks are taking place with those two Bowl Championship Series schools. Kansas State is out of the Big 12 Conference, while Pitt is a member of the Big East Conference.

Alvarez said no contracts have been signed with either school. The same goes for Brigham Young, an independent which has reportedly agreed to a non-conference series in 2014 and ’15.

Alvarez grew up in Pennsylvania and is known to have an affinity for Pitt, which has played the Badgers in football only three times, the last in 1967.

Needless to say, a really quality non-con opponent is always great to see on the schedule.

Not sure how far out this would be. Pitt appears to have openings in 2014-15, but if Wisconsin is slated to play BYU then, I doubt they would do both series. Expect this one to be a good 5 years or so away.

from what I hear from PSU acquaintances (yes, I admit to it), they tell me that Madison and Camp Randall is a great place to visit in the fall.

I live and work in Madison for the UW. It’s a real football town – hell it’s a really college sports town. I love my Panthers and will always cheer them on, but I can’t help but be awed on gameday. It’s absolutely nothing like Pitt in the 90’s.

* real college sports town

[…] Head over to Pitt Blather for all the buzz surrounding the possible series. […]

Doing a mass “white man bop” to a bad House of Pain song is not cool. Of course, “Sweet Caroline” isn’t hip either, but then again, it doesn’t pretend to be.

My best friend went and played at Wisconsin, was lucky enough to be there for the Wisc upset over OSU on Sat night football. Even though I went to Pitt, I will always love the time I had in Madtown, and must give big props to a city that loves college football!

It would be great to see Wisconsin on the schedule again. The Badgers hold a special place in my Pitt Football memories as our only victory of the ’67 season. Wins were scarce back then so every victory was cause for celebration. A road game, we traveled by train to Madison, then nursed a world class hangover on the train ride home on Sunday. Ah, the memories…Dave Hart, the “the three W’s”…

WVU two years probation for the football team. Don’t know what this will entail, but, from the NCAA.

Comment by Dan 07.08.11 @ 5:43 pm

Non-compliance by Dickrod and Stewart!. Nothing said of the implications.

No, not jumping for joy. Not good for the Big East. Hopefully they will get some scholarships taken away etc., and not be restricted from Bowl games or tv games.

Yes, I hate them, but, was really amped for Pitt, WVU, and TCU in a year making the Big East relavant in the other BCS conferences eyes.

Looks like West Virginia got a slap and a kiss. Not much there. Very weak enforcement on part of NCAA.

Wisconsin fans are a bunch of drunk, rude hooligans. Can’t wait till I get to watch them give up their flasks at the Heinz gates.

Hey, Randy, ever think the kids Mom might have cancer or something??

Comment by Dan 07.09.11 @ 5:55 pm

On top of it, I wouldn’t begrudge any kid for “just wanting out” if there was a coaching change. As a matter of fact, the kids should be able to transfer without missing a year if there is a coaching change.

Coaches move around at will, are much more stable financially, are wiser for the years, much easier for them to move on, hell, if anyone should have to sit out, it should be coaches for a year.

I’m no bleeding heart, don’t believe players should be paid or anything like that, but, the transferring rules are absolutely ridiculous for the kids, when the people that spent two, three sometimes four years calling them, stopping by their home, sending them mail, begging them to come to their school, can just up and leave in an instant, and somehow, an 18 year old is suppossed to stick by his “committment”????

Best of luck to ya son, hope your Mom isn’t seriously ill, and, if you decided you just wanted to go home, sorry you have to sit out a year, none of your recruiters are!

Comment by Dan 07.09.11 @ 6:04 pm

One caveat, if the coach does not quit, or is not fired, I could see the kids having to sit out one year, just as a guard against kids just deciding “they don’t like it there”. That makes it so the kids really have to think about it.

Shows lack of character?? BS! These kids are 18, 19 years old, the juniors and seniors rarely transer.

I’m 46, if a guy came to recruit me to his business, begged me, introuduced me to his staff of 14, told me how good I could do for the company, how much I could accomplish, then, I decide to go there, and in the first month or two the head guy, and the staff I was going to be working for quits or gets fired. Think I’m gonna have some sort of loyalty to the company itself, when my boss and all the people I was told I was going to be working for are suddenly gone in an instant, and it’s all new people, with new ideas, have no idea what the other people told me, and secondly, may not live up to anything the previous guys said???

No, the kid should have the right to walk without having to sit out a year, nor worry about making any excuses for his actions.

Comment by Dan 07.09.11 @ 6:14 pm

Dan, I agree .. we are talking about 18 year old kids, many of whom have never been away from home … plus the issue that many of the people who recruited them and they have developed trust in are no longer there. I have no issue with Bryson at all .. if he is unhappy, then he is rght for asking for the release.

Comment by wbb 07.09.11 @ 7:10 pm

Agreed wbb. Was hoping to get some more replies just to get some football talk going, but, middle of July, guess I’m jumping the gun.

Allthough, seems like it was just April, gettin’ closer. Enjoy your Sunday!!

My boss is a whisky alum. He said it was a very ‘liberated’ campus when he attended. Would make for a good road trip.

Too many tough BCS teams in their non-conference schedule? Badgers don’t care! Badgers don’t give a shit!
