One Less Pitts

A little tidbit at the end of new ESPN Big East blogger, Andrea Adelson’s bit on Zach Brown coming to Pitt.

Behind Graham, there is total inexperience and uncertainty. You have walk-on Desmond Brown and then the four incoming true freshmen: Isaac Bennett, Jeremiah Bryson, Malcolm Crockett and Corey Davis.

At least Brown has some game experience against some excellent competition in the Big Ten. Even with Brown, there is no question the true freshmen are going to have every opportunity to see the field, too, simply because depth is such a problem. Every team needs to go at least three-deep in its backfield to feel comfortable, and to be sure not to totally wear out the starter. Two-back systems have been the answer in many places.

All four freshmen running backs have reported and are on campus. In fact, every freshman is there minus defensive back Jevonte Pitts, who is most likely headed the prep school route.

[Emphasis added.]

Good to know that the freshmen are already getting ready for the upcoming season. Lots of opportunities, I expect.

Jevonte Pitts is the cousion of Lafayette Pitts and was the teammate at Woodland Hills of EJuan Price. Between his academic issues and not exactly a standout on the team, Jevonte’s recruitment was seen mainly through the prism of luring Lafayette and Price to Pitt.

Whether that remains true or not, it looks like Jevonte will have another year to try and get himself in a position to disprove the conventional wisdom.

Did anyone else see this coming back in February???

Dave W. is a hard act to follow in recruiting. Pitt fans, never known for their patience will be tough on Graham if he does not win 8-9 games this year. He has a tough non-conf start which will make it difficult. It is hard to get excited about a fourth string running back from Wisconsin.
I am hoping Graham’s team performance matches his PR skills, and not his recruiting prowess to date. I paraphrase, but when I read that they are more concerned with the players character than football skills, I start to gag.

As many have said, the number of stars does not always predict the future, But Marino, Dorsett, and Fralic wouldn’t have been 2 star players.

It’s too bad we didn’t get any of the recruits that were verbally committed from last summer/ fall(inluding 4 star RB Poteat) but that, of course, cannot be blamed on Graham.

There appears to be sufficient talent to be competitive, and I believe we should be … but won’t be disappointed if we do not win the BE … but heck, I was one of the few who didn’t think Pitt should have been the league favorites last year.

Anyway, with the schedule and the new offense (and defense) it should be pretty darn interesting.

Comment by wbb 06.28.11 @ 7:23 am

If you consider the players Graham has added since signing day(Price, transfers) it makes for a pretty good class. Add the fact that he has actually recruited two nice linebackers for this class and one for next year as well as a shot gun center. He is doing quite well so far. His first few classes have to be about adding positions of need because of the switch in philosophy.

Comment by notrocketscience 06.28.11 @ 7:36 am

In addition to being competitve, the only other expectation I have is that the team improves throughout the season (kind of sounds like our basketball coach.)

Comment by wbb 06.28.11 @ 8:17 am

gc,
What would you rather have going into this year backing up Graham, a 4th string RB with Big 10 experience or a combination of a walk-on/true freshmen?

Comment by Pete 06.28.11 @ 8:59 am

I would not panic regarding Graham and recruiting, the transfer from Wisconsin will be a nice addition, the kid just got caught up in a numbers game.

Let’s see how the season unfolds and how signing day transpires in 2012 prior to passing judgement. Alot of high profile high school players are still available and some kids that have comitted will change their mind.

Graham is a proven coach who has won at Rice and Tulsa.

Wanny was a very good recruiter but he had a hard time developing game plan strategy and game day management. Bowling Green and Ohio U were not loaded with 3 or 4 star recruits and we found a way to lose.

Comment by BBW 06.28.11 @ 9:18 am

Its not yet a given that recruiting is going to be weaker than Wannstadt’s and that 2012 will yield a weak class. We just don’t know yet. There are mixed messages concerning the 6 commits to date. ESPN (4,3-stars + 2, not yet rated) seems to like the start better than either Rivals or Scout (several 2-star ratings). We will have to wait to see whether these some or all of these players senior seasons give them a ratings boost across the board by LOI day. In addition, there could be as many as 19 more recruits (if Pitt signs 25 in February) so there is plenty of room to add a bunch of highly rated recruits (several 4-stars and, perhaps, a 5-star or two?) if Pitt has a strong 2011 season on the field that impresses recruits.

Comment by pitt1972 06.28.11 @ 9:20 am

Yeah, Brown maybe a 4th string RB, but he sat behind 3 complete STUD RBs. He would have been a starter or at least 2nd string on a lot of BCS teams, I’m very happy to have him.

The situation is great, he’s going to be hungry. He’s got one year to show everyone what he can do,

Off Topic from the P-G:

[J.J.] Moore said. “Me and Lamar are always going at it in practice…”
Moore said. “That was a big factor in me not playing last year…”

Ah, I remember the good old days when a sports reporter would correct an athlete’s grammar before publishing the same. Well, at least it is not as bad as some quotes that I have read.

Comment by BigGuy 06.28.11 @ 10:31 am

Big Guy: Perhaps the sports reporter was not aware of the incorrect grammar. Ha! Rev. George from Columbus where, to read the papers EVERY BUCKEYE ATHLETE IS A RHODES SCHOLAR, (Except, of course, those who sell their shirts and rings for tatoos)

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 06.28.11 @ 12:19 pm

Rev. George, unfortunately what you suggest may be true and falls under the heading of “Dumbing Down of America”. (I find the P-G’s reporters, however, to be educated, literate, and knowledgeable. For the record, except for Bob Smizik, I don’t know them personally.)

I am finding it difficult adjusting to the new mores of the country, especially when I go into a store and find that a bubbly, seemingly intelligent, young female sales clerk is all tattooed and has body piercing. (“Hey, Mom. I want you to meet the girl that I want to marry and be the mother of my children.”) That’s why we older folk are expected to exit from life’s stage.

Well, if you thought that my last post was off topic…

Comment by BigGuy 06.28.11 @ 1:10 pm

BigGuy, FWIW, I suspect that there will be a slight smile on my face when I pass on, probably due to the fact that I no longer have to do any more business on the phone.

Remember when ‘the check’s in the mail’ was considered the biggest lie? .. that has been replaced by ‘Your call is very important to us so please hold the line until our next available rep ….”

As far tattoos … I guess it is personal choice but guarantee you it would never be my choice.

Comment by wbb 06.28.11 @ 1:37 pm

Gonzalez is back and working out with the team.

Comment by steve 06.28.11 @ 2:43 pm

I find the last few blogs morally uplifting. By the way, excuse my ignorance, but WHO is Gonzalez?Rev. George. Oops! I just remembered, he is Pitt’s 2nd team Q.B. If so, I’m glad. The kid can flat out run.

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 06.28.11 @ 3:41 pm

Pete, it depends on the freshmen, Shady, Lewis and Graham were pretty good. I am happy to have Brown, all I am saying is don’t lose your head. Anyway, glad to stir up some debate. I am hopeful Coach Graham finishes strong in recruiting and on the field and silences the naysayers. But right now I am not drinking the Kool-aid. I agree with those from Missouri… Show Me.

I too am an old fart. While a small tattoo on a shoulder or in a discreet location is sexy, I find the full body art repulsive.

Comment by gc 06.28.11 @ 4:22 pm

You guys can leave the tattoo ladies to me, much appreciated.

How is this going work?

“Hey Joe, you have crew cut!”
“Yep. It’s the style.”

“Hey, Joe. I see that you have a greasy duck’s tail”
“Yep. It’s the style.”

“Hey Joe. I see that your hair is hanging down to your shoulders.”
“Yep. It’s the style.”

“Hey Joe. I see that your hair is trim. A real dry look.”
“Yep. It’s the style.”

“Hey Joe. I see that you are all tattooed-up.”
“Yep. It’s the style.”

“Hey Joe. Tatoos are no longer in style. What are you going to do?”

Hey Joe – Just set the tanning booth to…

This may be my favorite line of posts yet… Hendrix, tattoos, grammar, relevant points about today’s youth… Doesn’t get much better than that. As a teacher it is quite frustrating to attempt to explain to a teen that it will be people my age or older who will hire them. And appearances do count.

Everyone has a right to their own choices, sure. But make sure you understand the that with freedom comes consequences.

Lawyers hate, hate to go to court. Fifty percent chance of losing. A settlement can be portrayed as win-win. Expect Haywood to settle for some amount less than contract buyout of $300k. His lawyer will get at least half of that. One thing future employers will hate more than the domestic dispute is suing his former “employer”. You really have to question Haywood’s judgement here.

Comment by 66Goat 06.29.11 @ 8:47 am

RichRod sued his former employer (and lost.) But as in the case of sports, when one is successful, employers tend to look the other way on many things. (Note that Calipari now has a $36M contract for the next 8 years)

Comment by wbb 06.29.11 @ 9:58 am

Thank God Haywood is a jackass and was dumb enough to screw his opportunity with Pitt. He may have saved us from years of bad football and a down turn in the program.

Lets see, Morris Watts as OC or Todd Graham running the show…..hmmmm I’ll take Graham!

Comment by Coach Ditka 06.29.11 @ 10:43 am

I’ve spent 32+ years in the military and avoided getting a tattoo and it cracks me up to see young people getting them at the drop of a hat.

However, two of the best and brightest young people I’ve ever had work for me are tattooed and pierced galore.

Something to remember – PITT’s ‘crack legal team’ that reviewed Haywood’s contract did so in less than 36 hours from the incident happening… over New Year’s eve and New Year’s day. It wouldn’t be the first time an organization knee jerked to something to avoid embarrassment. It was a good decision to cut him loose but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if PITT ponies up money to make this go away rather than drag it out publicly.
