Thanksgiving in Philly

Okay, so maybe you are heading to Morgantown on Friday after Thanksgiving this year for the Backyard Brawl.

There is another option. Pitt basketball will be playing in Philly that same weekend. Pitt takes part in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.

On Friday night, Pitt will play Penn at the Palestra. Yep. A football-basketball doubleheader on the day after Thanksgiving.

No, this is not a marquee tournament. Pitt was kind of due, unfortunately, for a less than high-profile early season tournament after the past couple of years. This one fits that description with other participants (of which two will come to the Pete to play) include: James Madison, Rider, LaSalle and Robert Morris.

The only upside is that Philly area Pitt fans get to see Pitt play in the historic Palestra.

In other non-con basketball scheduling news, tomorrow ESPN will announce the pairings (and the four Big East teams excluded) in the all-new, revamped Big East/SEC Challenge — courtesy of ESPN PR guy and Pitt grad Mike Humes.

Not often that you see a highly ranked team agree to play a road game against a much lower ranked but potentially dangerous underdog. At least it is during Thanksgiving break so Penn’s students may not be around to pack their home court.

Looks like it is Pitt vs. Tennessee in the Big East/SEC challenge. This time the game is in Tennessee.

Saw a St Joe’s vs Temple game at the Palestra back in the streamer days of the early 80s …after the 1st basket, everyone threw a streamer on the court and the game stopped for about 5 minutes for cleanup.

The Palestra certainly has history but can’t say much more about it except Penn is a nice campus. Since it’s Thanksgiving weekend, Pitt fams in Philly area may have a good chance for getting tickets although the gym isn’t that big.

Penn used to be good under Fran Dunphy. They’re not nearly as good as they were a few years ago…still, Pitt playing in Philly? Hallelujah!! Not to mention at possibly the most historical gym in college basketball history…going to be fantastic.

I miss the streamer days at Fitzgerald.

Pitt will be in Knoxville at the Thompson-Boling Arena on Dec 3rd. TN best players Hopson & Harris left early and new coach Martin will have a young, motivated and I suspect disciplined team. He won’t recruit Pearl type thugs. I don’t think they can match us in front court.
