News of this started showing up on Monday. Yet another DB transferring to Pitt.

This time it is Brendon Felder from UNC.

Felder came out of Gateway High. He plays both WR and cornerback. He redshirted last year, but was a highly sought after recruit as Bryan runs down the recruiting rankings when he came out of high school.

The reason for his transfer is not the lack of playing time or some coaching turnover. It’s personal.

Former Gateway wide receiver Brendon Felder said he has left the University of North Carolina and will return home to help care for his ailing grandparents and enroll at Pitt.

“They are very important to me in my life,” Felder said Tuesday night while waiting to board an airplane for Pittsburgh. “My grandmother would take care of me when I was little and being close to home will enable me to focus (on college).”

Felder, 6-foot-0, 180 pounds, was redshirted last year during his freshman season at North Carolina. He said it was difficult to leave.

“I teared up a lot today,” he said of saying goodbye to his friends. “It was an emotional day. North Carolina was a place I grew to love.”

That is honorable of him, and I know everyone is hoping that he is able to help them.

On the selfish fanboy side, Felder is petitioning the NCAA for a hardship exemption so he can play right away at Pitt. That would provide some vital depth and competition this year in the secondary right away.

For those counting at home, that is the third transfer to Pitt. All of which look like they will be in the secondary. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but how about a linebacker or maybe an offensive lineman?

Final thought, is that despite the change of coaches, Pitt has had only one player leave the team (and one suspended player completely kicked out). There’s yet to be a transfer out of Pitt to another school at this point. Something I sort of have been expecting.

He only spent one season at Gateway, but was pretty explosive, seems Gateway players get a lot of hype, but last impact one at BCS type school was Justin King, hope this kid is next. If grandparents are real reason for transfer it shows class.

Definitely seems like a good kid. I wish him all the best.

The ESPN bio on him, suggested he could be very dynamic on the offensive side of the ball in the spread. There words were to create mismatches in open space. Just the kind of player Graham is looking for in the High Octane/Nitro Spread attack.
Any high octane/nitro type QB’s looking to transfer?

That we really need instead of anything else.

about the fact that nobody is transferring (yet), just remember when you hear rumors about anything to do with Pitt atletics, you should take it with a grain of salt … from Marino being on drugs in his senior year (1982) to Pitt being the 12th member of the Big 10 (last year), you should only believe it when it happens.

BTW, I heard Gibbs is headed to Europe if he doesn’t get drafted by NBA

Yeah, I also read that he would play WR and not DB. Although I must admit I thought it would be better if he were a DB. So we’ll see.

Russell Wilson from NC State may be looking for a team this fall…

wbb,

Not taking a shot at you, but I found it humorous that you ended your post about not believing rumors with….. a rumor!

Knowing wbb, I think that was the point…

I think Graham is looking at Felder to be on the offensive side of the ball – he still doesn’t have the number of WRs he wants to carry going into the season.

The more days that pass and the closer we get to summer training camp is good news regarding kids transferring out of PITT. Like Chas, I am also surprised we haven’t had any yet.

Rob Bolden or Kevin Newsome anyone?

Pitt is perceived as an exciting and fun program again and thus the interest of these kids. Wanny sold his program based on preparing you for the NFL, but that only works with the elite kids (4-stars) who have a chance to go Pro. Most recruits don’t get into the NFL but that doesn’t mean that can’t have very successful college careers. So, with the odds against you going Pro, why not have some fun playing the game and all that comes with it (hero worship, money on the side (tOSU), and girls, girls, girls)…and get a good education to boot. I’m envious of these kids.

Pantherman13, I guess you know me pretty well; fact is that I haven’t heard anything recently about Gibbs except that he wi supposed to make his decision at the last moment after his NBA workout this weekend.

Texas Panther, I think you made some good points about Wanny’s recruiting. While he was able to recuit really good DL propects, he didn’t do so well on the OL (although Otah, Nix and Jacobsen were, but just not enough.) Same thing about DBs a couple of years ago and LBs recently. His last two classes (counting this past one that didn’t happen) were more balanced (2 good QBs and 3 good OLs last year and good WRs and LBs in the alleged 011 class), but his downfall was that the team just didn’t have good overall balance.

(Shady at RB, inexperienced frosh Bostick at QB);(Pinkston and Nix at tackles with walk-on Karabin at C), and (Romeus and Sheard at DE with the LBs and DBs they had last year).. all examples of the imbalance of talent.

i just read that sean miller is the front runner for the maryland job. why would he leave arizona for maryland? dixon mentioned as a candidate. When did Maryland become a b-ball powerhouse? it’s a joke.
