Sorry about no WVU recap or preview of this game. Snow days with the kids, and doing extra parenting duties to cover for going to Senior day and the regular season finale next Saturday.

From what I understand, Louisville is a 1 point favorite at home. I’m only shocked it isn’t more. Louisville is unbeaten in Big East play at ther new joint. Even before Pitt beat the Hoopies on Thursday night, Luke Winn at SI.com had Pitt #1 in his power rankings and had a tremendous chart showing efficiency margins in home/road splits. There’s a reason Pitt is on top of the Big East. Of course, Louisville has one of the biggest boosts at home, so yeah. This is going to be Pitt’s toughest road game of the year.

As usual it’s a moderated chat. Redundancy, over-the-top hyperbole/reactions  and idiocy are good ways to not get comments through.

If you need to break it out from the site, Click Here. As usual, though, it is also right below.

1st half analysis: too many defensive breakdowns but mainly ice cold shooting until the last 2 1/2 minutes

What the hell is Tru TV?

Comment by wbb 02.27.11 @ 2:54 pm

Pitt is playing like they are afraid of Louisville. Scared, sloppy and slow.
We can still win this game, however, the real Pitt Panthers have to show up.
Texas and Duke have both left the door wide open for Pitt to move up in the rankings. Jamie has to be pissed at the performance of the Panthers.
This is NOT the time of year to go in to a funk!

Comment by isnore 02.27.11 @ 2:59 pm

Here at the game-the tone has changed, early in the second half…Pitt needs to go after Louisville on the fouls-we didn’t capitalize on those in the first half.

Comment by Lou 02.27.11 @ 3:18 pm

This kind of game by Pitt, slow start, bad free throws, unable to score and turnovers, scares the hell out of us fans as it reminds us of so many NCAA losses. I will give Pitt credit for being tough and hanging in there today against more awful officiating but we lost our heads and our composure in OT.

Comment by Dan 72 02.27.11 @ 4:28 pm

Gilbert Brown, flashes of absolute brilliance, combined with missing wide open, playground type, jump shots. Sums up his resume.

Comment by Dan 02.27.11 @ 4:31 pm

Sucky game – really should have won but missed so many opportunities. 1 point in the first 4:59 seconds of overtime isn’t quite going to do the job most nights.

IMO, Louisville was very unimpressive. Anyone that calls Pitt a “dirty” team has obviously not watched Louisville play. I have never seen more uncalled handchecking, grabbing, etc.

Not too worried about the tourney right now – more worried about the offensive efficiency. If you take out the second half against WVU, it hasn’t been there for a while.

Overall, I think Pitt has two really good players (Gibbs and Brad), one good player (Gilbert) and a bunch of average guys (everyone else). What has been consistent with their losses in my opinion is that extra guy from the “average” group hasn’t stepped up to help the big three. Nasir played a horrible game today. Lamar came off of a great WVU game and did nothing. Gary was Gary – nothing really bad, nothing really that great.

For this team to go far in the tourney, I think it’s going to come down to those role players like Nas, Travon, and Lamar to play better and make contributions. If our bench doesn’t play well, I am worried about Pitt’s chances, especially considering the big three are rarely on all “on” at the same time. Bench scoring today was 21-6 in favor of Louisville.

Comment by Mac 02.27.11 @ 4:37 pm

Pitt is not going to win tight games in the BE or NCAA tourney’s unless they improve their free throw shooting. Now it’s a one game lead in the BE with two games to go. Shades of Deja vu.

🙁

Comment by MariettaMike 02.27.11 @ 4:41 pm

Here’s hoping the end of regulation give Brad the confidence boost he needs for our stretch run.

I usually harp on FTs, bad officiating, and bench play….but I keep coming back to 10 minutes with no FG. That is unacceptable.

Comment by Pauly P 02.27.11 @ 4:41 pm

A winnable game against a team that plays well at home. Getting the game to OT was an accomplishment in itself. Wannamker proved that he’s the best go-to player late in a game. To me, their success in March will be hinge on Gibbs. 3-11 today, including at least 4 wide open looks. Also, if someone besides the big 3 (Gibbs, Wanny and Brown) can contribute, they will be tough to beat.

Comment by nycpanther 02.27.11 @ 4:51 pm

another one just like St John’s — ould have / shauld have won but close loss to a very tough team to beat. What I like the most is (in both games) the could have been broken, but they kept hanging in there and coming back

as Pauly indicated, they went into a scoring drought .. but they have been doing tat for mush of the year but still have survived most of the time.

Comment by wbb 02.27.11 @ 4:55 pm

Weird game:

1) Gary McGhee = 1 FGA
2) Gilbert Brown = the only player to miss more than 1 FT
3) Nasir = 1-7, 5 TOs, 20 min (did he even play in the 2nd half?)
4) Wanamaker = 13, 12, 6, 3 and 2 (wow)

Obviously needed a few more buckets from Gibbs. Also needed a few more points from Woodall and at least a half dozen more looks inside to McGhee. Nasir can go 1-7 but he can’t turn the ball over 5 times.

We are going to see absolutely nothing but 2-3 zone in the first two rounds of the tourney.

Comment by cnorwoodaz 02.27.11 @ 5:36 pm

I think what hurts is that SJU and Louisville play more of an amoeba 2-3, not a passive one like cuse which pitt has shredded over the past few match ups. The bottom line is Pitt is a good team that can put itself in position to win but is not overwhelmingly good. Fortunately such a team does not exist this year. Hopefully they can pull out some tight games in the tournament because they almost surely will need to to get to the final four, it is a very balanced field

Comment by Brian 02.27.11 @ 6:04 pm

Could someone please explain to me, with Pitt trailing by 3 points with 10 seconds left, why would Brad Wanamaker would pass up a wide open 3 to pass the ball to Gary McGhee. I know we played like crap the intire first half, but to pass up the open shot after he just made a few tough jumpers,is tought to understand. Also in the first half we were in the bonus with 6 minutes to go and we didn’t drive to draw any fouls.

Comment by Justinian 02.27.11 @ 6:07 pm

On a positive note…these are the kind of games I want to see Pitt playing in before the BE and NCAA tourneys. Don’t really care about the loss. Unlike most, I thought Louisville played the best Defense of the year this afternoon. Pitt could not score (or even get shots) in the half court set.

I don’t care if Pitt loses the BE reg season or gets KO’d in game #1 of the BE tourney…the NCAA’s are the only measure that counts!

Comment by Dan 72 02.27.11 @ 6:08 pm

Thought again the weak link here is Pitts inability to defend high screen on ball, especially with McGee’s guy screening. We either get beat with big cutting to basket or as ball swings we are late in our rotation because we needed to help while McGee got back. Pitino picked this apart. Why not keep Mcgee in and stop penetration while guard fights through screen. Would rather take my chances of guard hitting jumper from 20 feet off dribble. So frustrating.

Comment by Z-boy 02.27.11 @ 6:20 pm

How does Nasir Robinson consistently escape criticism? A 6’4 pf with 4 block shots all year and 4 rpgs

Comment by J-Maile 02.27.11 @ 6:21 pm

If Brown makes the layup, the clock stops with 9 or 10 seconds left. Fouling on the inbound and we get at least one, if not two more possessions. Wanamaker misses and we somehow get the rebound, we maybe get another off balance heave at the buzzer. We don’t get the rebound and we’re down 3 with a few seconds left and them going to line.

I’m pretty sure the call was to go for two and was executed almost to perfection, except for well, the whole making the wide open, uncontested layup part.

Comment by cnorwoodaz 02.27.11 @ 6:25 pm

They looked tired and sloppy today. Gibbs hit the front rim many times. I still don’t understand missing that many free throws. Some of them are not even close. If I was the other team in a close game, I would foul Gary and Nasir.

Comment by GDodson 02.27.11 @ 6:33 pm

Robinson has been tremendous most of the year. He played a horrendous game today and didn’t seem to have the motor that he usually has.

Don’t have a problem with Wanny looking to Brown with 10 seconds left. We make that and fould and we’re in a position to tie or win on another possession.

Defense is what really cost us the game today. Louisville got a ton of really good looks on 3’s this afternoon. Furthermore, we were slow to rotate and did a bad job hedging screens several times.

Considering how we played in the first half, this wasn’t a bad loss. Sure we had the chance to win, but I’m certain Dixon and the team will look at this as an opportunity to learn and get better. Need to close out the season with 2 wins and win the regular season title and we should still be in good shape for a #1 seed, especially since other teams keep losing too.

Comment by TJ 02.27.11 @ 6:38 pm

J-Maile, when Gibbs was out, it was Nasir more than anybody tat pocked up the slack, and he also led the team in scoring on Thursday night vs WVU. No, he is not all BE, but picking on him in one of his few bad games makes no sense.

The(what should have been an easy 2 with 9 seconds left) was not the worst bit of strategy I’ve ever seen

I do agree with Z-boy. In both of Pitt;s recent loses, they gave up a lot of buckets from not properly exceuting the high hedge at the top of the circle. You can tell Pitino had some solutions for it.

Comment by wbb 02.27.11 @ 6:42 pm

Don’t see this group making it past the second round. Sorry to be negative but another good to great but not excellent Dixon team.

Comment by TonyinHouston 02.27.11 @ 6:58 pm

Guys, it’s extremely tough to win on the road, and Louisville hasn’t lost at home this year. Pitt didn’t have its best offensive game, but it’s defense basically shut down Louisville. I think good things are ahead, and maybe great things if they make a couple of more few throws in the tight games.

Comment by velvil1 02.27.11 @ 7:05 pm

please note the 2nd round this year is like the 1st round in past years .. there are 7 rounds this year

Pitt make not again it past the Sweet 16 but not based on their 2 recent losses. A 1 pt loss to the hottest team in the country and an OT loss at Louisvlle should not offer doubt. Every top team has been losing on the road as of late except for Kansas who hasn’t really played any top team lately … they did lose at home to Texas by 11.

Comment by wbb 02.27.11 @ 7:17 pm

This team is every bit as good as any other team in the country this year. Make all the predictions you want about how far this team will go, but I don’t think you can use losses to St. Johns and Louisville on the road as evidence that this is not a great team.

Comment by TJ 02.27.11 @ 7:42 pm

Good teams can be cold and lose a game like this, a great team would have found a way to win this one. Pitt hasn’t been playing for 40 minutes in both of their recent losses. That is just not going to cut it in the one and done NCAA’s. Hope this will serve as a wake up call going forward for the Panthers.

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.27.11 @ 8:20 pm

Biggest concern I have is this team is not improving,JD usually has them on an uptick this time of year. McGhee is going backwards from the promise he showed. Depth is gone, bench is useless at this point.
Need to really lay it on SFlorida and beat Nova to turn this ship around. Then hope that ball handling and foul shooting doesn’t fall apart.

Comment by Jimbo 02.27.11 @ 8:31 pm

No great teams this year. A few very good ones, including Pitt. I like our chances as much as any of the other top 5 or 6 teams. This game looked in a lot of ways like Duke’s loss last night– fighting all game to pull ahead in front of raucous crowd, just not being able to get over the hump due to missed shots, turnovers, and a couple clutch plays from the other team. I’ll take my chances with the Panthers this year.

Comment by Jason 02.27.11 @ 8:38 pm

I don’t mind them going for the two, arguments could be had for either way, we all know the strategy for going for two, but, I have to agree with Justinian, maybe if you’re covered, or semi-covered, fire it low, but, wide open, would not have had a problem with B.W. popping a three there. There are pros and cons with each, but, left wide open???? Gotta bust the “J”.

Comment by Dan 02.27.11 @ 8:49 pm

While Big G & Nas have both have their moments this season with sterling performances, neither one is very consistent. (since they’re both shooting over 50% FG %, it might be more a lack of trying to get the ball inside) Which is why both are averaging 7 or 8 ppg and why we can go long stretches of time without FG’s. We have no consistent inside scoring threat(whether it’s offensive scheme derived or talent derived) and if the Big 3 (The Triplets) are settling on jump shots and are cold, we have big problems scoring.

Gil should always be looking to take the ball to the rim, and Wanny is our big assist guy most games. Ashton is our only big 3 point threat. This team is not the greatest shooting team, but they are pretty athletic at every position and have a decent bench. It’s too late now, but this team has played better when it’s an uptempo game. They did that earlier this season and had that per game average up to 78 ppg.(we even scored 79 against a decent ACC team,Maryland and 89 against Marquette). Whatever it is, they seem (or Coach is) afraid to play uptempo against the better BigEast teams. He wants to play halfcourt and in most games we’ll win, but this team, with this personal is more suited to win uptempo than any other Pitt team we’ve had.

This team really needs to get a lot more transition buckets and use Wanny’s, Brown’s and Woodall’s ability to beat their man off the dribble in transition. We know Big G can get up and down the court better than 98% of other centers and Nas can run the court as well. I don’t want to get beat in another slow down half court game like Notre Dame, SJU and today.

Another thing this team doesn’t shoot FT’s very well either, which means close games and teams that don’t shoot FT’s well usually lose those games.

Comment by melvinbennett 02.27.11 @ 8:58 pm

Patterson is horrible with the ball when he’s pressured. I would play J.J. Moore a lot next game. A lineup I would love to try is Gibbs, Wanamaker, Moore, Brown, and Taylor

Comment by Tony Cancilla 02.27.11 @ 9:02 pm

On the last Pitt possession, you’re NOT going to get a better look than that at a 3, Wanny had to take that shot. Strange because Wanny took and made the big shots at the end of regulation to get us to OT. Gil was obviously not looking for a pass there, which is probably why he missed the shot. He was getting in position for a potential rebound, too bad, cause he had one of his better if not best game of the year.

Hopefully we are not going into our near annual fade. We truly need to win the BigEast, as we haven’t won it since like 2003-2004(regular season). We need to win these next two games and we should, USF should be a win and Villanova is not playing well, SJU trounced them today at Nova. We need to finish strong and get that #1 seed.
HTP !

Comment by melvinbennett 02.27.11 @ 9:09 pm

Little to late in the year to be throwing JJ into the mix, Tony. There’s a reason why he isn’t playing much, he’s not there yet, doesn’t get it.
And you have to be kidding with Taylor. He has no clue how to play defense on the blocks. Dixon uses him just to spell Big G these days.

Comment by melvinbennett 02.27.11 @ 9:12 pm

I love Dixon as much as anyone, thrilled with what he has done, could not ask for anything more. Even a Final Four or N.C., took Boeheim 20 some years, does not bother me, I know the tournament is a one and done crapshoot, anything can happen.

But, for the love of God, they have got to do something with the free throw shooting. Over the last decade, one of the best of any team in history, starting with Ben and continuing with Jamie, the friggin’ f.t. shooting??

I could understand if you’re debating %76 compared to say 68%, “what can you do?”, but guys shooting 40% and 50%’s, consistently for 10 years.

Oh, yes, you could pick a year and prove me wrong, but, in general, that has been a trademark thorn.

I say this with love, not mocking, he has to know someone in the business, that teaches free throw shooting. Players can vastly improve. They are doing something wrong down there with technique, teaching, form, something. They’re always “working” on it, but this has been going on for years.

I love Jamie, wouldn’t trade him or the last 10 years for anything, but, there is a problem that has to be addressed in the future.

Comment by Dan 02.27.11 @ 9:21 pm

Hey, I’m dead seious about knowing someone in the business. What I mean by that, you always hear stories in all sports, “well, I brought so and so in, to show us how they run their triple option”, “I brought in so and so to help me with my putting”, “so and so to show us the 2-3 zone”.

Surely, he has some buddies or buddies who know someone, that is a free throw guru, or free throw improvement specialist???

Pens brought in someone a few years ago, that was an expert on “cycling the puck” to spend a couple days to show them improved techniques.

Surely there is someone out there to help us improve??? No??? You mean if a kid is a %45 f.t. shooter in high school, that’s what he’ll be for his career, and that’s it???

Seems like I hear the phrase, “he has improved his free throw percentage this year from x to y” constantly during college hoop games.

Never hear that one during a Pitt game though, LMAO.

Oh well, gotta get USF and Nova. Better be ready to play USF!!! They’re gonna be there, on the court, ready to play to win.

Comment by Dan 02.27.11 @ 9:42 pm

I think Wannamaker’s pass to a wide open Brown with 9 seconds left was the right thing to do. It was the right strategy and a perfect pass. If we can’t hit that lay up, then we can’t win this game.

Comment by Ron 02.27.11 @ 10:15 pm

One last thing before I hit the sack. I hear a lot of people, not on here mind you, most of you probably realize this. But, at work, hear people some day, free throw shooting is going to cost you a game, meaning, with a couple seconds left, we might miss a free throw to tie or win the game!!

Their heart is in the right place, but, rubbish!! Free throw games have cost us games over the years. When you go 9-21, or 4-13, or 8-23 as examples, that does “cost you the game!!”

Funny, some people think it’s a last second free throw that only cost you the game!!

I’ve tried to explain, it’s like the dealer throwing you an extra couple cards, freebies, you’ve got to take advantage during the game!!! They are just as important points as a last second free throw, geesh, some people don’t get it.

Good night all!! Hail to Pitt!!!

Comment by Dan 02.27.11 @ 11:11 pm

Wow, it is late at night and I am sitting here typing about Pitt free throw shooting…get a life!
I suspect that many of you will remember that I vented last week after the SJU Game about Pitt’s terrible showing on the charity stripe. Well, this time I am calm cool and collected and will simply say that Pitt will possibly be a #2 seed in the NCAA and be forced to play in some far away time zone. I would not be surprised to see Pitt drop to #2 in the Big East or tie for for the top. This team does not have the ability to shoot free throws. 55% 55% 55% HORRIBLE!!
Less than 60% against The Johnnies.
Oh, but isnore the games were on the road….THE NCAA’s ARE ON THE ROAD. Dan called it like I did
last week and I say it again Jamie Dixon is a top notch coach, however, he needs to find somebody who can teach the basics of foul shooting..YES FOUL SHOOTING TECHNIQUE CAN BE LEARNED.
Pitt is headed for another drop-out at The Sweet 16 mark…Elite 8? Final 4 NO WAY SHOOTING UNDER 60% from the foul line….NO WAY!!

Comment by isnore 02.27.11 @ 11:57 pm

In my humble opionion, I think Wannamaker’s pass to a wide open Brown with 9 seconds left ’til the end was certainly the right thing to do!

Comment by Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro 02.28.11 @ 6:57 am

Aside from poor FT shooting, again, Pitt lost this game because a guy named Siva for Louisville played an excellent game and Pitt helped his as he went 6/6 at the FT line. Given Siva’s take charge attitude, I would have liked Wanny to take the open three pointer but he made a good pass to a guy who was waiting to play a potential rebound… This game is history now on to Florida. HTP

Comment by MariettaMike 02.28.11 @ 7:32 am

Dan & isnore are spot on. If I’m an opposing coach losing by a couple baskets with seconds running out at game’s end I’m DEMANDING my guys foul any Panther with the ball, except Gibbs, ASAP and take my chances. Percentages don’t lie. Pitt shoots better from the field than at the foul line, WTF, that spells doom anyway you cut it in a tight game at the end with an opposing coach that knows Pitt’s tendencies.

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.28.11 @ 7:56 am

Just random points, I personally would have taken the 3, but you can’t really fault Pitt for going for the 2 either. Louisville is a bad free throw shooting team. So there was a decent chance that after the 2 and the foul Pitt is down just 1 or 2 with 8 seconds left and the ball.

There is a HUGE difference between a conference road game and a NCAA tournament game on a neutral court. Going into yesterday’s game Pitt had the best road record in the nation. And Pitt is basically a play of two away from being undefeated on the road in the toughest conference in the nation.

In regards to free throws, if it was so simple to teach shooting free throws then wouldn’t everyone make them. And I’m sure McGhee and Robinson practice their free throws. So it’s not an effort thing. Besides, what does teaching have to do with Brown who is basically a 80% free throw shooter going 2/5 from the line in the game and Patterson went 0/2 and he was shooting about 80% on the year from the line. So that is a total of 2/7 from two guys who shoot 80%. On the other side of the ball, Siva a 67% free throw shooter went 6/6. Teams just really love shooting free throws against Pitt.

I think the number one reason for the loss in this game is the stretch of 8 minutes without a FG. Pitt makes just one shot during that stretch, then Pitt gets the win irregardless of free throws. When Pitt plays it’s A game free throws don’t matter, because Pitt will be up enough on the team.

I’m not sure why some people are being so negative (well besides being typical Pitt fans). Pitt has two games left in the Big East, one on the road against the terrible South Florida team and second home, for the last game of the season against Nova. Pitt has been rolling at the Pete minus that flukey game against ND. If Pitt can’t beat Nova on Saturday, then they don’t deserve to win the Big East. 27-4 in the regular season in the Big East is definitely good enough for a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Comment by BlackMagic 02.28.11 @ 8:14 am

Panthers were choking dogs against Louisville. Every one of them. Then there are free throws. Take away Gibb’s 6 made, rest of the team shot 38%. Proff of choking.

Comment by 23Panther 02.28.11 @ 8:34 am

Toughest things about the SJU and Louisville losses is that they were easily winnable, despite numerous shortcomings. Glad to see Gil have such a strong game. Was also glad to see Wannamaker really step up late in the game, but did feel he should have taken the 3. However, earlier in that half, Wannamaker had some terrible TOs. He simply has to make better decisions at this point in the season and his career. His negative plays nearly cancel out his positive ones in some games.

A few things that I find disconcerting: Gibbs disappearing act, again, in the last 10 minutes or so of the second half, and the fact that we really get no offense from McGhee or Taylor aside from the occasional put back. I know McGhee has made tremendous strides, but the fact that he has not been able to master just a simple offensive post move or two is highly disappointing and makes Pitt a far more predictable team. Then again, he’d have to catch the ball cleanly to make a move, and that just doesn’t happen.

And coming back to a comment from another thread the other day, perhaps I’m oversimplifying things and just not looking carefully enough, but it really does seem that backdoor cuts are there. Heck, even the threat of one, just executing a cut once in a while, will at least get defenders thinking about it and perhaps create a little space for Gibbs. Perhaps this would change the flow of the offense in some ways, but given the offensive struggles in the last 5-6 games, I don’t necessarily know if that’s a bad thing.

Still think this team can do some big things, if Wanny, Gil, and Gibbs can all get on the same page for a stretch of games and the remaining players just play solid ball. A lot to ask, but by no stretch impossible, IMO.

Comment by Carmen 02.28.11 @ 8:55 am

We have to move past this and win in Tampa. All of the negativity and doom & gloom manifests if we do not win the BE outright. SF will be pumped, we can’t fall behind, need contributions from bench. We looked tired in Louisville, no team in the BE comes close to Pitt in expending the amount of effort Pitt has this season. Considering Pitt’s style, quality of competition and the results to date no team works harder, and it shows. This is not a good shooting team in some foreign venues, they were horrible yesterday until the direction switch at half gave them opportunity to refocus. Pitt usually has a good feel for the baskets at the Garden but this team hasn’t shown that either. Now they board a plane tomorrow for a venue in Tampa where I believe they didn’t shoot well in a loss last year. I can’t belive it’s coming down to a must win in SF.

Comment by Old School Panther 02.28.11 @ 9:28 am

no reason to panic. pitt’s talented enough to win the NC if they ‘get to their game’, as dan bylsma would say. most frustrating thing about losses to ND and l’ville is that pitt let those teams impose their will on them, dictate tempo, etc. if you’re going to loss, at least go down playing smart and aggressively. much too passive vs. press yesterday imo. oh, and making more than 50% of your FTs would help.

Comment by wilk 02.28.11 @ 10:03 am

On the FT shooting thing… As you know, I have been railing on this site for years to solve this problem. Talked with someone very close to the program late Sunday. It seems the players have their own form when they get to Pitt and simply refuse to change or be coached up on FT technique. I cannot believe that JD would allow this but the results are the results. As some one who has taught FT shooting and been to all the “shot doctor” clinics, it is beyond belief that the Pitt players go to the line with a complete lack of FT shooting technique! Much like a bad golf swing, you can make FT’s in practice all day (as you can hit balls at the range in golf), but if your form is flawed, you are only reinforcing a bad habit that will NEVER hold up in a game’s pressure situations.

I can teach my wife (who has never touched a basketball) to shoot 50% from the ft line.

Comment by Dan 72 02.28.11 @ 10:36 am

One observation I had about that game was that when pressed–even lightly–Pitt takes its sweet time bringing the ball down court. I’ve never measured it, but isn’t there a rule that you have to bring the ball across the mid-court line in 10 seconds? We undoubtedly take all 10, followed by what seems to be another 10 before the guard passes the ball to someone. This inevitably leaves around 16-17 seconds in which to set up a play, which yesterday, seemed to leave Pitt taking lesser-quality shots from the perimeter.

Conversely, we never seem to press, which allows other teams to come downcourt easily. This just doesn’t seem physically efficient.

Agree that when Pitt is focused and motivated, they can beat anyone, with a number of weapons. It will be interesting to see where Jamie puts his emphasis and the priorities over the next week and a half. Winning the BE regular-season would seem to give us a #1 seeding in the NCAAs. I would like to see Pitt play–and beat–at least one of the teams we lost to during the regular season, just to prove we can beat them. If ND gets the #2 BE seeding, we’d have to go all the way to the BE championship. A more likely scenario would be getting to play SJU again. Regardless, I don’t want to see Pitt kill themselves, just to win a BE Tourney. I’d rather them be fresh for the NCAAs.

Dan the Man – you go!

Dan expresses much more completely and articulately than I could the frustration many of us feel over Pitt’s free-throw shortcomings.

It’s such an obvious, glaring deficiency that NEEDS TO BE FIXED, despite the overall wonderfulness of JD and his program.

Lou, I was wondering the exact same thing about our (lack of) press. Do we even have one? Has anyone ever seen us press on the inbound? I’m going to email Zeise now to see if he can ask Jamie this question.

Looking back on the game, I had some thoughts…

1) Keep coming back to that 10min stretch with no FG. Somebody has to step up and hit a jumper…I really think Wanny needs to assert himself in that situation when Brown is on the bench, and Gibbs is cold.

LESSON– Against good competition, at no time can Pitt afford to have 2 out of the 3 key offensive cogs (Wanny, Gibbs, and Brown) to be MIA. Brown was really doing well and Gibbs’ shot was off. Wanny needs to break that ameoba zone and bust that 12 footer (like he did at the end of the game). He does that a couple times in that 10min stretch, and we take the lead in the second half and, who knows….

2) Press– I felt like we did one of the BEST jobs ever against UL’s press yesterday. I loved how we attacked the press with the hail mary, split seem and other walk ups. Considering the UL intensity and our usual propensity for turnovers in those press situations, I thought we did a great job. Looking at our TOs again, we mostly turned the ball over in transition off of defensive rebounds. We only had a couple, press-causing, turnovers.

LESSON– We are experienced and skilled enough to handle these Missouri/UL/Nova type teams when they bring 40 minutes of hell…beyond just surviving, meaning, we can actually score and exploit this scheme. Kudos to JD for working on this a lot in preparation (maybe he cut back on layup and FT time as a result, ugh!)

3) Siva (insert any ridiculously fast PG in the country) absolutely destroyed us off the dribble for nearly 30 minutes of the game. We had no answer but double team, help d (which opened the wing up for open shots). Not until late in the game did we sag into a 2/3 to stop this. Once again, in JD I trust…but I keep wanting him to adjust a little faster on these dribble penetrators with scheme or personnel.

LESSON– Uberquick guards getting penetration and dishing out will be a problem for us and we need to react quicker or expose ourselves to wide open 3s or mismatches with 5s on 1s.

Staying on a positive note– kudos to Gary for blocking the 2nd to the last shot on the mismatch. And, Wanny for blocking the very last shot in regulation. Two great plays that got lost in all of the angst and frustration.

With more really good recruits coming next year, I’d love to see JD hire an asst. coach who could implement a full court press style of play for Pitt.
This results in lots of turnovers and easy transition buckets. We would have the necessary shot blocker in the back of the press with Khem Birch, as well as the 6’11” Malcom Gilbert. But Birch is supposed to be a phenomenal shot blocker.

We have basically 3 point guards next year with Woodall, Gibbs & Epps. 3 shooting guards with Patterson, Wright & Johnson (Gibbs interchangeable). Lot of wing players in the 6’6″ to 6’7″ range (Moore, Bond, Johnson, Patterson) and 4 big guys (Taylor, Birch, Gilbert & Zanna)

The full court press makes for a very entertaining game with lots of dunks and such.
With all the cupcakes in the non-con, there would be plenty of time to get it fully up to speed before BigEast play. We haven’t had the athletes in the past to implement this style of play, if ever there is a time, it’s next year.

I have to agree with Melvin, I too would like to see JD hire an assistant coach that could be able to implement a full-court press style of play for Pitt.
