Put One More In The Class

Chris Peak at PantherLair tweated that CB Jason Frimpong verballed to Pitt. A 2- to 3-star athlete who played QB and CB in HS, he projects as a CB.

Obviously CB is a position of need for Pitt. Pitt Script has some YouTube Highlights.

At the moment, Pitt’s recruiting class has crept up to 10. Looks like signing day might have a little extra drama than in past years.

Loving Graham. Thank goodness Wanny is finally gone. Only took 5 years too long.

“Thank goodness Wanny is finally gone. Only took 5 years too long.”

Yah, J-Maile. Wanny was a lousy recruiter. Was his 2011 recruiting class ranked No.1 in the nation? Nah. Only No.16. (I believe that it was ranked No. 1 in the BE, but anyone can be ranked No. 1 in the BE.) Any of Wanny’s recruits currently playing in the NFL? Well, maybe a couple of them are and are even starters. But will any players get drafted this year? Outside of Lewis, Baldwin, Sheard, Romeus and Hynoski, I can’t think of any. Now that we have Todd Graham as a coach, I’ll bet a few of his players will get drafted in the NFL.

Little wonder that you are not satisfied with the results of Wanny’s recruiting

“Thank goodness Wanny is finally gone. Only took 5 years too long.”

BTW, J-Maile. I think that you have a point. So what if DW was getting 4-star recruits. The 2-star recruits that Graham is bringing in aren’t that many notches below Wanny’s recruits.

Comment by BigGuy 01.29.11 @ 4:00 pm

BigGuy, you are right, our recruiting classes were great and we put players in the NFL. Would I would trade highly ranked recruiting class and some NFL starters for a few victories and BCS appearances. It makes me happy when Fitz catches a TD or Shady runs for one, but at the end of the day, that does nothing for PITT’s win column.

Get off Wannstedts man meat. Nice guy, but a loser as a coach.

Comment by Todd Gack 01.29.11 @ 4:05 pm

Todd, I can have a discussion with you on DW’s coaching abilities (or lack thereof). You picked up, however, on my irritation with J-Maile’s apparent dissing or belittling of DW’s recruiting accomplishments.

Comment by BigGuy 01.29.11 @ 4:18 pm

Let’s see if I can say this again without my head exploding…

Anyone who thought that Coach Graham was going to pull a bunch of recruits back or get the greatest class ever need to get a cold dose of reality.

He was only trying to hype up a disenchanted fanbase…and just the fact he has gotten various 4-star types to take another look at Pitt was incredible.

The fact remains..this year was shot to hell. The recriotomg c;ess. whatever it becomes, is no indication of Graham’s ability to recruit.

You got give him a mulligan if you have any sense in reality.

Next year is the year that matters…not just across the country but also in Western Pa. which supposedly is rich in talent.

Graham is rebuilding the relationships that were destroyed by the Pederson-Nordenberg fiasco that occured since December.

Anyone who is criticizing Graham now based on recruiting is just someone who never wanted to give him a chance in the first place (and everyone knows I was originally in the Bradley camp).

He could’ve recruited the number 1 class every year and still would have lost to 2* and 3* players of Cinci, UCONN, and any other Big East team Pitt would play in a meaningful game. Wasted a lot of talent.

Todd, Wanny (the loser) won as many in a tougher conference the past 3 years than our new saviour!!

But I believe the main point should be … hey, Graham looks to be doing well in recuiting, and things are looking up and we should do well in the future.

There is absolutely no need tocontinue to bash Wanny … a guy who tried ard, brought musch talent to Pitt and ended with a 42-31 record.

If nothing else .. he certainly left th eprogram in much better shape than when he took over. I’ll guarantee you that Graham will not have to start 3 natural freshman his first game like Wanny was forced to do.

Let’s move forward …

LOL at Pinkston recovering a quarterback fumble in the Senior Bowl. He has seen many in his years at Pitt.

Comment by Panthoor 01.29.11 @ 6:18 pm

Sorry to say but I wish someone would keep my post and I’ll guarantee at best 8-4 next year with a higher probability of 7-5 or 6-6. We will lose to Iowa, Notre Dame, possibly Utah, and 1-3 losses in the Big East.
We will not get 4 and 5 star recruits here…a few 4 stars at most. I know a lot of people say this and that about how this recruit was a 2 star, now he’s in the NFL, or how the 4 or 5 star played only as a backup. You need great players to make a great team.
I am convinced we are going to stay at the present level of mediocrity for a long time to come. I wish I were wrong, but we don’t have Big East titles in the near future nor a top 20 program.
I was a season ticket holder 5 years and still go to 2 or 3 games a year. I know there will be a few on here that will say “please don’t go back” as they will take my criticism as if I don’t care about the program. It’s not that. It’s the way the football program has been run for the past 25 or so years…I dislike PSU a lot, but when they moved to the Big Ten, I believe they shared the Big 10 titles twice and the last time they won it was 16 years ago. They are still relevant and play on the national scene constantly while being a mediocre team at best. We get scrutinized(justly so) for being in a very mediocre conference and should win the Big East at least every 2 or 3 years. We haven’t been relevant since the early 80’s. What a shame the way the team has fallen over the years.

Comment by beanboy 01.29.11 @ 6:36 pm

Hey Beanboy – I’m glad you can predict the future – even before spring ball. We seem to have a good coaching staff and a new exciting offense that will keep games interesting. It’s more fun to win games withe a score of 45 to 28, then the 20 to 10 games we’ve seen the past few years. We have a lot of talent already on this team and most of the freshmen class red-shirted. Having any QB other than Tino is an improvement already. It will be a fun and exciting year. I also expect a good recruiting class with a good number of 3-star recruits (much better than expected since the coaches had around 3 weeks to get commitments who were not not decided). Overall, our coaches will be able to recruit in PA as well as new areas accross the US – with more results in FL and TX likely. So while you are predicting a dreary future, I’m looking forward to a new year with a fun offense. Hail to Pitt!

I’ll be a lot happier with 8 and 4 with a new staff and a new system than I was with 7 and 5, after a top twenty ranking (as ridiculous as I thought that ranking was). It was the UConn and WVU losses, more than Utah and Miami.

Another thing, fans, we ALL know the difference between a 2 star highschool prospect and a 4 star is miniscule AND a matter of opinion. On the factual side: that was a great win for the Panther hoopsters tonight against a Rutgers team that was really motivated. Hail to the victors!!! REv. George of Columbus

First off – I think comparing the players Dave Wannstedt was recruiting and the players Graham is getting are like sizing up apples and oranges… we now have a completely different coach than before, completely different football philosophies than before, and it follows that we’ll have different recruits than before.

The key here is not how much the PITT fans like the recruits, but how much the current coaching staff does.

These in-home visits are not like off season camps where just about anyone can participate and PITT offers one or two kids… these recruits who are visiting PITT at this late stage are specifically targeted and contacted by the coaching staff because they WANT to be able to convince them to come and play in the system the new staff is instituting. The bottom line here – and we’ve heard this a million times in HC interviews across the country – is that the coaching staffs don’t care one bit about the star rankings. They care only about getting kids they can coach up to fit what their own visions are.

Which is the second point; Graham and many other HCs (Petrino, Kelly, Edsall, etc.) have shown indisputably that recruiting in the BE means way less than being able to successfully coach the players to produce as a team… a failing that way way too obvious over the last few years with our ex-coach. Aren’t we all sick and tired of winning the battles in everything that doesn’t really matter – recruit rankings, preseason rankings, NFL draft choices, All-American players – then falling flat on our faces when it actually does matter on the field of play? If you aren’t, then your sense of priority is somewhat skewed.

Third, the poster above – and numerous others I’ve read over the last month on here and elsewhere – have made grand pronouncements that Graham will go, at best, 8-4 next season. Which really cracks me up… we may well do so, but what in Hell did we just do in 2010? And, can anyone in their right mind envision that DW would have magically bettered that in 2011 when he had all the cards falling into place for a great run last season. If anything I think Wannstedt would have continued his downward trend and produced even poorer results next year – after all, one of his hallmarks of consistency was repeated failure to meet the stated goals of getting PITT to a BCS bowl… regardless of how well his previous recruiting classes were ranked.

So, in all honesty, I’ll be satisfied if Todd Graham can take this football program, with all the problems that it has gone through over the last 12 months both on and off the field, and do as well as we did last year. What we are watching unfold now means way less next year than does the actual coaching of the players and the team.

Comment by Reed 01.30.11 @ 6:07 am

Wanny and Dixon are very good at finding undervalued players and getting them to the next level. However Dixon has been better at winning which in turn makes recruiting a little easier.

Comment by TomMc 01.30.11 @ 7:49 am

There is that key word,WINNING! a year from now no one will remember any of our posts here, but the 2011 W-L record for Pitt Football will be inked in history. Graham is mining for speed, he knows that is what he needs to make his systems work on both offense and defense. We need to just chill and let him do his job for a while. Our responsibility as true Pitt fans is simply to show up at the games and support his efforts and watch to see what the hell transpires on the field. Graham asked Pitt fans to allow him to prove that he can produce what we have all been waiting for for over 30 years, a truly nationally competitive football program. Coaching comparesions, recruit stars, w-l predictions, all BS. Just commit to showing up at the games next season,do some cheering and see what happens. Thats exactly what I did in the season of 1976. There were no signs the year before of what that next season held, but it sure was fun to watch. Anybody remember who Tom Yewcic was? An unknown until he saved our last National Championship. My point, enjoy the experience, its the journey not the destination that is the most fun and we’re just packing up for the trip about now, enjoy the ride. Hail to Pitt.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.30.11 @ 8:28 am

in predicting that Wanny would continue on a downward spiral, Reed is showing to be the anti-Beanboy.

The fact is that the new coach began with 2 ten win seasons and then ‘spiraled down’ to a 5 win season before regrouping to 10 wins this past season.

No one knows what would have happened if Wanny was still here or what will happen with Graham unti actually occurs.

Comment by wbb 01.30.11 @ 8:28 am

I’m glad we stopped talking about Haywood – now if we could only stop talking about Wanny. We have a new coach, a new system, a new positive energy. The offense will be so much different – with speedy guys all over the place to add to our returning RB (Graham) and receivers (Shanahan, Street, Sadler) and TEs (Cruz and others). It will be fun to watch. Once this staff has a couple years of recruiting their type of players and developing the players to learn the system, the offense should get even more dynamic. SO how long til Spring ball? But Please guys, can we go at least a handful of posts without talking about Wanny – I mean that was THREE coaches ago! 🙂

Comment by dish 01.30.11 @ 9:02 am

dish, 3 coaches ago … pretty funnny.

Nonetheless, as I posted above (4:22 pm yesterday) it is time to ‘move forward’, and (1) in complimenting the new coach, there is no need to bash the old one, or (2) in stating doubt about the new coach, there is no use in speculating what the old one would have done.

Comment by wbb 01.30.11 @ 9:12 am

Re:recruiting–It’s seems silly wishful thinking to put the spin on the current recruiting efforts (as some seem to be doing) that it is simply Graham recruiting a different type of player for a different type of system and that the 2011 recruit class will be a good to great class. I’m sure that fitting his system is a consideration; but it has to be a minor one. Right now it has to be far far more the situation that he is scrambling to get the best available players left at this extremely late time in the recruiting window for 2011. For this class to turn out as strong as the one on the board prior to all the decommits Graham will have to get extremely lucky over the next few days and reel in several of the medium to low Pitt interest 4-star kids who recently made official and unofficial visits to Pitt who are still left on the table.

Whether he is fortunate enough to do that isn’t really important. Through yesterday’s reported commitments, Graham has done an excellent job in a very short time at at least putting together a small (but respectable in quality) recruiting class under the most adverse of circumstances.

“We need to run faster” – I think was the exact Wanny-ism, dugdog. Look for a “faster” Buffalo Bills defense, I am sure, next year.

Is Pitt going to take every 5-10″ player out of Texas that could not get a scholarship to a BCS school? That is hitting the recruiting trail hard? Kudos to coach Graham? We had a coach that could recruit offensively skilled players. We need muscle.

And the reason we have to “salvage” the recruiting class is the botched firing and hiring process, which resulting in hiring a coach that had no connection whatsoever to the recruiting base.

Comment by PO'd Panther 01.30.11 @ 11:14 am

@BigGuy. You can’t rewrite history to suit your memories. In 1975 Pitt was producing potential but still was just an up and coming football team. We got embarrassed by Oklahoma early in the season, then blanked by Navy 0-17 midseason. We lost the Backyard Brawl and lost to Penn State 7-6 in a defensive struggle at season’s end. Yeah Dorsett really did look like he could make a run for the Heisman after his 303 yards against ND but Pitt ended the season at 8-4 and was seen as nothing special nationally. Starting the 1976 season we play ND 1st and get thrust into the national limelight with that win, then follow it up with a win against a good Georgia Tech. team. Until then there was NO INDICATION that Pitt could challenge for the National Championship, NONE! Michigan then gets beat by Purdue and by default we find ourselves ranked #1 in the nation! NOBODY could believe it at the Army game. However, what I was really referring to was how any season can unfold, with it’s unknowns and trials and tribulations. When Cavanaugh went down most people thought the magic was over. Then a walk-on steps in (Yewcic) and plays over his potential to keep us in it until Cavanuagh gets back from his injury. Not to mention the fairy tale script written for Dorsett breaking the NCAA rushing record at the Navel Academy on a touchdown run no less. That’s the kind of stuff you you would think was cheesy if written into a fictional movie script but it really happened that way. That was my point, we have no idea what next season will bring. With all of the variables on the table at this point who knows. Going from an 8-4 season to a National Championship with the Heisman Trophy winner to boot, yeah that was something special and we had NO IDEA just a few months before what was waiting for us in the future. Just like now.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.30.11 @ 11:57 am

a 6′ 0″ CB with speed sounds good to me. He seems to have good ability to defend, tackle, and catch the ball. He had 17 scholarship offers including some very big schools. He was under the radar for only playing football for 1-2 years. Here’s the video link:

The owner of a car dealership walks into the Monday morning sales meeting and says “Who here thinks they can sell three cars today?” Its quiet in the room until one hand finally goes up. The owner says, “That man gets a $100 bonus just for thinking he can sell three cars”. Todd Graham thinks he can sell three cars. Its refreshing after all of the caution we’ve seen over the past 6 years. Give me someone who believes in themselves every time.

Have seen a few of Devin Cook’s films. I think this kid is going to be a big time player. He runs well, has good feet, good form, and smacks people. Apparently, he played at 260lb. his junior season and did not have a very good year, then over the summer dropped like 30lbs. and exploded his senior year. I think this is the reason for the small number of offers and poor rating. His film is much more impressive than I thought Hale’s was coming out of HS and Hale was all-everything. I’m excited for Cook to be a Panther.

Regarding Wannstedt and 2011: Wbb, sure – it’s all speculation – but IMO we were poised as never before under DW to win the BE outright in 2010… and we all saw what happened. To me, think that he would somehow pull out a “great year” in 2011 is a real reach.

We read and heard the same things prior to the 2007, 08, 09 & 10 seasons also – when PITT was looked upon favorably to win the BE they choked every single time – so I feel comfortable when I use past results to base future projections on.

However, 95% of what we talk about during the offseason are “we’ll have to wait and see” subjects… most especially recruiting where you honestly have to wait at least two years to gauge the quality of a recruiting class. Yet PITT fans do that continually. How many comparisons between DW’s 2011 class and Graham’s 2011 class have we already read – when not one single recruit had even signed on the dotted line yet let alone played a snap of football.
