Sorting Out the Assistants

Well, now there is only one position coach spot left on Todd Graham’s new staff.

“I make it a priority to hire people who will make me a better coach,” Graham said. “I am extremely pleased with the staff we’ve hired thus far. Not only are they excellent football coaches, they are also tremendous men who are honored to be a part of the University of Pittsburgh.”

Graham still needs to hire one assistant coach and he said it will be a safeties coach.

Mildly surprising that Graham has split safeties from the cornerback. Most of the time you see a position coach listed as “secondary” covering both corners and safeties. Give what safeties have to do these days, though, it does have a logic to it.

With most of the Wannstedt staff gone, there weren’t many people that had to be told they wouldn’t be retained by Graham. One, however was Strength and Conditioning Coach Buddy Morris.

[Shawn] Griswold’s appointment means the end of Morris’ third stint at Pitt. Morris led Pitt’s conditioning program for 19 years and served five head coaches since 1980. He also worked for the Cleveland Browns from 2002-2005 and the University of Buffalo in ’06 before former Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt brought him back in ’07.

Morris, a Pitt graduate, helped train some of the best players in Pitt history, including Jimbo Covert, Bill Fralic, Dan Marino and Russ Grimm.

Morris, whose assistant, James Smith, also won’t return, said he had turned down job offers from Iowa State (2008) and the Washington Redskins (last year) to remain at Pitt.

“I had a 45-minute conversation with (Todd Graham). I understand,” said Morris, a South Park graduate. “He wants to bring his own guy in. I wish him and the University of Pittsburgh nothing but the best.”

Morris is a well-respected and known S&C coach. I expect him to land on his feet.

The good news is that key parts of the support staff are staying.

None of Wannstedt’s assistant coaches were retained, but three members of the administrative support staff will be back. They include director of football relations and program enhancement Bob Junko, assistant athletic director/football relations Chris LaSala and his assistant, Matt Dudek. Graduate assistants Luke Getsy and Eric Thatcher were asked to return.

The hiring of QB Coach Todd Dodge is the most intriguing of all the position coaches. The former North Texas coach, and major proponent of the spread offense at the high school level in Texas is already in action.

“We’re recruiting this weekend when the Steelers are playing in the AFC Championship game,” Dodge says. “It’s a great recruiting tool. The facility is really unique because we share training facilities with the Steelers. The Steelers are on one side and we’re on the other.

Dodge says he just grabbed enough clothes to begin his new job recruiting and working for new coach Todd Graham.

Dodge was the head coach at North Texas from 2007-10 and will now be the quarterbacks coach at Pittsburgh. He won four state titles while at Southlake Carroll from 2002-06.

“It’s what I was looking for,” Dodge says. “I wanted to be somebody’s quarterback coach and be part of someone’s staff with my background as quarterback and as a head coach.”

And of course, Todd Graham has been constantly in motion since last week.

On Monday, Graham assembled a who’s who of WPIAL stars, from U.S. Army All-American Delvon Simmons of McKeesport, Woodland Hills’ Lafayette Pitts and Clairton’s Desimon Green to Hopewell’s record-setting junior running back Rushel Shell, for unofficial visits at The Pete.

That seemed unimaginable only two weeks ago, when Pitt’s lack of leadership left its potential prospects in recruiting purgatory.

“That’s what hurt ’em; I ain’t gonna lie,” said Green, who was the Tribune-Review’s Player of the Year. “He came in and showed a lot of love, coming to the school and calling every chance they get.

“That means a lot with me. I can’t speak for everybody else — they’re still on the border — but he’s been honest with me, and I trust him.”

Maybe they came for a free ticket to see No. 5 Pitt play No. 3 Syracuse before a record crowd, but the important thing is that they came.

Not saying it was the only reason, but you can bet the free ticket to a game like Monday night’s played a big part in convincing them to show-up. After that, it’s up to Graham to sell them.

The article also makes a note of how Mike Hayood didn’t even get started with recruiting in his first two weeks. While some of it had to do with the recruiting dead period, the lack of contact with local Hight School coaches, is absurd.

Just for the sake of fairness to Haywood: my friend’s father is a ball coach, and he showed me a form letter from Haywood sent to hs coaches that arrived after he was gone. It was funny in light of the firing, but it did show a measure of effort make contacts.

Comment by teddy 01.19.11 @ 2:29 pm

Ah yes, form letters. The surest sign of sincerity and enthusiasm.

Graham directly contacts alumni and local coaches, appeals for their support, and promises to serve Pitt with honor.

Ah, but hey, Haywood sent a form letter, so…

Comment by A 01.19.11 @ 2:41 pm

The whole Haywood hire just looks worse with each passing day, does it not? I have no what was running through Pederson’s mind when he hired that stiff.

Comment by maguro 01.19.11 @ 3:00 pm

The best thing that may have happened in this whole debacle is Haywood’s incident and subsequent firing. The true silver ligning is that the University was forced to pony up double (from 2 million/ year to 4 million/ year) what they wanted to to pay, enabling us to get a real coach and staff.

Comment by crackbaldo 01.19.11 @ 3:52 pm

I coach football in the wpial and our staff received a letter from happy hands haywood after he was fired as well. I really believe Pitt made the right choice with the Graham hire. It seems as though Graham has the right mentality to not only recruit in this area but also in his former stomping grounds.

Comment by Jcan 01.19.11 @ 3:52 pm

“We should have kept Wanny.”
“Graham is a snake oil salesman.”
“Graham’s defenses were bad in Tulsa.”
“Graham did not win Conference USA with Tulsa.”
blah blah blah

I decided to get the negative junk out of the way.

Wanny is interviewing with the Cleveland Browns. Poor Wanny. He should just collect his paycheck from Pitt. The sport of football goes to die in Cleveland.

Comment by Penguins Fan 01.19.11 @ 5:58 pm

Coach Graham is recruiting hard but i dont think it will do mutch good this year he will be luckey to sign 12 players . If they dont get some commitments this week end dont hold your breath for a good class we are down to 3 players as of now and only one new commit so far.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.19.11 @ 6:08 pm

FRANKCAN: Due to the lateness of the start, I didn’t expect much in the way of recruits this year. What we get will be icing on the cake. Don’t forget Wanny redshirted most of last year’s recruits. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see some JC’s as stopgaps. I saw that Bill Belton committed with PSU. I don’t follow it closely, but wasn’t he one of Pitt’s top commits? I think he will regret later that he signed with JoPa, when he could have been an integral part of what will probably be a dynamite offense.

Comment by auggie from latrobe 01.19.11 @ 6:24 pm

I blame Haywood for most of the decommits (aside from the fact that Wanny was fired of course.) Haywood was hired relatively quickly for not being Pederson’s initial choice (Golden), and I assume the quick hire was due to in no small part that Pederson was hoping to save the recuiting class. Instead, Haywood, had no intention of even interviewing the existing staff (except for Hafley) let alone hiring them. I refuse to believe that Gattuso, Walker and Angelicho weren’t just as qualified as many of the staff he was bringing over … and with absolutely no holdovers, there was little reason for the recruits to stay

Comment by wbb 01.19.11 @ 6:44 pm

Some info Daily Mail sports writer Mike Casazza said WVU has added 5 players sence the announcement of Dana Holgorsen as oc they now have 21 players.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.19.11 @ 6:48 pm

as a previous blogger mentioned, there is no lack of talent or depth on the returning team that Graham is inheriting, and I bet he won’t have to start 3 natural freshman in his first game like Wanny had to.

The one position that worries me is RB if the report that C Burns is transferring is true .. with D Lewis opting for the NFL. We need some quality back-ups to Graham (Ray).

The new recututing cclass does to be big but hopefully will have some quality at selective positions.

Comment by wbb 01.19.11 @ 7:10 pm

I believe Auburn has a safeties and corners coach. Worked for them

Comment by Tony Cancilla 01.19.11 @ 7:44 pm

Let’s be realistic. I don’t see how this years recruiting class can be salvaged, no matter what Graham does. The decommits are all likely long gone. He may be able to add a 3 star recruit here or there, but it sounds like the rest of the class will be filled with a few players who add depth. The efforts this year won’t be wasted however, since it appears many HS coaches have been very impressed with the current staff & that’ll pay dividends long term. Next year, Graham likely will have the max 25 scholarships to work with and maybe he can work some magic. I hope so because, according to several recent depth charts, PITT loses 8 or 9 starters on defense after next year.

I think we will all be astounded at the recruits Graham is able to bring in. I bet you all he gets at least 18 good ones. He is one hell of a salesman and his enthusiasm is infectous. Let’s quit with the negative vibes! This is not Wanny.

Comment by Dan 72 01.19.11 @ 9:23 pm

Let’s end all talk of Haywood and focus on our future. We have a lot to look forward to – new offense, high scoring games, new enthusiasm!

Graham will end up with a good recruiting class. Just wait and see and think POSITIVE.
Hail to Pitt!

A couple of things to consider…

1) Haywood wasn’t allowed to speak with any HS recruits until he became a member of the coaching staff – which was to take effect the day after Wannstedt’s contract ran out. Since Wannstedt’s contract was for the ‘full’ 2010 season that meant until after the last game of the year – which was the Jan 8th bowl game, therefore Haywood’s contract started on the 9th. The details of his beginning employment at PITT were detailed by both the P-G and the Trib Review when Haywood was hired… it was also one reason it was so easy for PITT to cut him loose after his incident.

Up until the 9th Haywood would have been considered a “Booster” by the NCAA. Still, he certainly could have put more effort into discussing things with the local HS coaches – whom he could talk to anytime.

2) Wbb – There have been many great interviews with our decommitted recruits on the subscription pay message boards – to a person each one has said that they committed to PITT because of Dave Wannstedt. It was a foregone conclusion that we were going to lose a ton of recruits once his firing was announced – I’m kind of surprised that anyone was shocked by it.

As far as the existing staff goes – it was a total house cleaning by the PITT administration. It didn’t matter that anyone on the staff was a good coordinator or coach – they all were fired. The salient point being was that, like DW, their contracts for 2010 went through the bowl game also and PITT allowed most staff to leave early… other than Bennett and two others.

That’s why you see that the only holdovers in the football program are the three guys who were actually on the administrative staff and not on DW’s coaching staff; Junko, LaSala and Dudek.

But make no mistake – if a PITT fan looks at what transpired and wonders why we didn’t retain some staff because they were good coaches they are barking up the wrong tree – that was never going to happen.

Win this year and Graham can make up recruiting deficiencies next year. It’s as simple as that.

Comment by Pittastic 01.20.11 @ 6:44 am

Yeah, I have to agree with the negative vibes with the recruits. It ain’t over till it’s over. I’m not expecting miracles either, but we’re all just grasping at straws until letter of intent day. We may end up pleasantly surprised. Graham’s enthusiasm is infectious. He definitely has his work cut out for him, but if anyone can pull off a last minute TD to win the game, it’s him and his staff.

Let’s Go Pitt!!!

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.20.11 @ 8:05 am

I agree with Dish and Dan72. Even though there have been many loses from the recruiting class assembled by Wannestedt, the flip side is that Graham has recruits that are interested in him rather than Tulsa, just like Wanny’s recruits. So right there he has a resource to be harvested. I also feel that Graham has the ability to pull a rabbit out of his hat based on his personality and public speaking prowess. Just look at the enthusiasium that he has generated from the depths of despair that was Pitt football in just a couple of weeks. I won’t be surprised at all with a good recruiting class being assembled by Graham. A solid 3 and 4 star group I feel is possible although it may only include a small group of recruits, probably less than a dozen, at that ranking but that in my mind would equate to great success being that his back is to the wall with the time crunch before signing day.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.20.11 @ 8:19 am

for any of those out there who still have the audacity to defend the worst hire in recent history for coaches, Mike Haywood….

talking to some of the recruits/players i know in the area… every single one of them said they werent going to play for this guy… and the player’s meeting had many talking transfer…

AND HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ALL OF THIS

very clearly, in plain english, why Steve Pederson should be fired
while he tried to save a few hundred thousand, he sacrificed winning at the football program

from the horse’s mouth…that being Pitt recruit and WPIAL stud (the right kind, with speed) Desimon Green

“I want to go down there with my mom, so she can meet the new staff and see what it’s all about,” explained Green.”If Pitt would have just hired these guys before, instead of (Mike) Haywood I never would have looked around and we would have kept the class together.”

Comment by DeVanzo 01.20.11 @ 8:44 am

Graham hit the nail on the head, “Players commit to coaches”. I certainly agree that we were inevitably going to lose several recruits with Wannstedt’s firing, but the way Haywood handled recruiting and putting together his staff certainly didn’t help. I truly believe that if Graham were originally hired we would have had a much better shot at retaining some recruits.

That being said, he has done an excellent job of hitting the recruiting trail fast and trying to put together a class for next year. His enthusiasm and passion are infectious and the current players have already bought in, which will go along way in swaying some recruits.

Comment by TJ 01.20.11 @ 8:50 am

Does anyone have any thoughts on the recruiting star rankings relative to regions? I would assume a three star Texas player is stronger then a three star recruit from the WPIAL. It’s kind of like a good looking girl with a group of other good looking girls. She does not look as appealing. But surround that same girl with a bunch of average girls and all of the sudden she is hot!

Comment by winedogs 01.20.11 @ 8:53 am

Just saw that visitors jumped from 7 to 10 this week and 3 to 5 next week. Hope SP brings the Windex to clean the window between Steeler and Panther training facilities, especially if B&G move on.

Comment by CompLit 01.20.11 @ 9:02 am

And hope Graham can drag local recruits (parents) to ND BB game. I know they don’t play BB, but if it rocks, even at 80% of the Cuse game, then it presents an ATMOSPHERE of how the fans and university treat their athletes…..

Comment by CompLit 01.20.11 @ 9:13 am

Apparently Denard Robinson plans to stay at Michigan, however Tate Forcier is leaving. Anyone think he may be worth a look at Pitt?
