A QB Coach? How Novel

I don’t know the last time Pitt actually had a designated QB Coach (ever?). Walt Harris didn’t want/need one since that was sort of his thing. The OCs under Dave Wannstedt also served as a QB coach, and well, the results were mixed.

Coach Todd Graham appears to want a guy specifically teaching the QBs according to rumors/reports. The guy to do it is reportedly another Todd. In this case, Todd Dodge.

Dodge, for those unfamiliar with him, was considered one of the best high school coaches in the state of Texas. He ran an open offense (are we allowed to say “spread” with Graham — because that was what Dodge ran) called the “Air-Raid Offense.” Among Dodge’s QBs were Chase Daniel (Mizzou) and Greg McElroy (Alabama). In his last five years as a HS coach, his teams went 79-1.

Dodge bombed upon making the leap to the bottom of 1-A football with North Texas. A 6-37 record and fired mid-way through his 4th year. Now he’s ready to get back to things and will even be willing to venture out of Texas.

Dodge said he is willing to leave Texas if he can find the right job as a college assistant coach, but will remain in the state if he decides to take a job as a high school head coach. Dodge played at Port Arthur Jefferson and Texas before coaching at six Texas high schools and working twice at UNT, once as the passing game coordinator in 1992-93 before returning as head coach in 2007.

“I’m absolutely a better coach now,” Dodge said. “Any situation you are in, you have to improve, and I did. I can offer a lot coaching quarterbacks. I don’t need to be a coordinator, but I can be and could be. It’s always nice to have someone on your staff who has been a head coach. I understand the job. I want to get on a staff, use that experience and be a team player.”

Between Dodge’s connections to Texas high schools and his ability to develop QBs, this would be a fantastic hire for a position coaching spot.

Sounds like a great idea if for recruiting purposes only. A pipeline to Texas sounds fantastic. If we can pluck a few top notch players from there every year, that would be great. On the quarterback situation, what are peoples opinions on next years starter? Do Gonzalez and Myers have tools to be big time qb? I personally dont believe Sunseri has arm strength to be able to stretch field. Move horizontally than vertically. Teams played between the hash marks on us this year. Is this competition up for grabs?

Is this an indication that Graham is not hamstrung by Pitt with respect to salaries given to assistant coaches? I don’t know what the current staff is being paid (is this public knowledge?), but this was my fear when Graham was given $2m/yr. I’m hoping his salary isn’t proportionately decreasing how much the rest of the staff is/will be paid.

Well if reports were correct, being given a significant stipend to spend on assistant coaches was apparently a sticking point for Graham.

Comment by Coach Ditka 01.13.11 @ 2:28 pm

Graham received 2 million for himself and 2 million for his coaching staff.

Comment by winedogs 01.13.11 @ 2:44 pm

College teams are only allowed a certain number of coaches. Bringing in a QB coach eliminates one of the other coaching positions.

NFL teams can have an unlimited number of coaches or as many as the owner is willing to pay.

Coach Graham featured on ESPN’s CFL, he basically just rehashed everything he’s said since his introductory press conference. But it’s nice to see Pitt getting some positive national press again.

I like the ideaof a QB coach. Those “no huddle” offenses put a lot of responsibilty on the QB. Plus getting a QB coach with Texas connections can only help recruiting.

Comment by JW in Raleigh 01.13.11 @ 4:00 pm

Oh well, it is what it is. Whatever you want to call it, a run & shoot, a no huddle or a spread. It’s really a moot point. Peterson wanted a spread and Nordy didn’t want Rich Rod. I guess they told Graham that the spread was a dirty word to a lot of us. It’s not that I have a problem with the spread, but I was concerned as to how our current players would fit the system. I didn’t want to see another 2 or 3 year plan that requires different personnel. Hey at this point, I just want to see a good offence that can move the ball and win.

still worried about the defensive staff…………REALLY worried….can someone make me feel better about it?? please??

I mean….he basically brought over the defenseive staff for a TERRIBLE tulsa defense…yikes.

though i do like the QB coach idea, esp. w/ this offense…

In a system like Graham’s, where the qb is asked to do so much, I think a qb is necessary. Yes, college programs are only allowed so many coaches and a qb coach obviously means one less coach in another area. However, Dodge has worked with a couple of solid qb’s and this being such a new, high-responsibility system with our qb’s, a qb coach will be very beneficial in my opinion.

I hope Ziese keeps us up to speed on the recruiting too!

qb coach* in my first sentence. I’m pretty sure we know we need a qb lol

Myers is a big (6’4″) kid with a very strong arm, good footwork, made good decisions in high school. He isn’t the run/throw guy that Gonzalez is, but if you are going to pass the ball, he’s a good option.

Comment by Mitch 01.13.11 @ 5:05 pm

Regardless of how much these staff coaches are paid there is still a limit to how many you can have… get a QB-only coach and you lose a position coach elsewhere.

Comment by Reed 01.13.11 @ 6:06 pm

It seems that a lot of people and media (The Fan) are pointing to Gonzales to be the one who will best fit the new system … and that may well be so. But you should also remember that Myers is not necessarily the classic dropback strong-armed QB with limited ability … it should be noted that he was a starter on the HS basketball team and ran the 110 high hurdles, so it would certainly seem that he is athletic also.

correction to above post … I meant to say … with limited ‘mobility’

Comment by wbb 01.13.11 @ 6:11 pm

Tino will not make the cut as a starter. Tino’s major problem is that he does not hit his receivers in stride. Note how many time a Pitt receiver had to slow down or speed up in order to be able to make a reception. Note how many times Tino’s passes were on the wrong side of the direction that his receivers were going. Passes to the sideline were often toward the receivers left shoulder (receiver running to the right) or vice versa. In other words a disaster in terms of accuracy. When you look at Tino he often seems to be trying to guide the ball to a receiver (almost like a push and not a natural throw). I believe that Baldwin’s poor attitude came from complete frustration of being thrown to in ways that he couldn’t possibly make a completion. Compared to Tino, Bill Stull looked like John Ellway!!

Under Wanny, didn’t we have a TEs coach?

Comment by Little Prexie 01.13.11 @ 8:32 pm

Tino holds the ball like Tom Bradley holds on to his blanky! Tino won’t make the cut and will end his career at safety.

Comment by waxonwaxoff 01.13.11 @ 8:44 pm

Denard Robinson is shopping around. I think its worth it to take a shot at him.

Comment by Chris 01.13.11 @ 8:44 pm

Agree isnore,

Coach Graham can’t help see Tino’s shortcomings when he reviews game film. You described Tino’s lack of accuracy spot on. He threw to the wrong shoulder where guys had to turn opposite the way they were running, stopping all their momentum. He threw where guys had to come back for the ball, whereas if the ball was thrown correctly, it would have allowed the receiver to continue running in stride for huge gains and long TD’s. He threw screen passes in a manner where all forward momentum the RB had was negated or he threw them too low or too high with the same forward momentum being negated.

YOU CAN NOT run an Air-Raid offense with a QB as inaccurate as Tino Sunseri. I just hope that TG is not obligated to play him because he’s a Pitt legacy or that he is trying to placate the former player alumni group.

He might have said what he said at the presser, as only a bone for the above mentioned group to gnaw on. He couldn’t come in on Day 1 and say he was going to replace the starting QB right off the bat.
He seems like a pretty smart guy who knows how to play the game, (the real game that is)

Comment by TwilightZone 01.13.11 @ 8:50 pm

LOL…….waxonwaxoff

Bradley is getting passed over by Uconn apparently as well. Nobody wants the guy who has changed Joepa’s
diapers for the last 5 plus years I guess. I guess he’s tired of it too.

Comment by TwilightZone 01.13.11 @ 8:54 pm

Since QB is one of, if not the most important job on the team, offensively anyway, does it not make all kinds of sense to have a Coach who is dedicated to this position? It just seems to me like this hiring of a QB Coach is a very good idea. By the way I am a WVU fan who also thinks that all of the entire BIG East needs to get a whole lot better.
