I don’t know the last time Pitt actually had a designated QB Coach (ever?). Walt Harris didn’t want/need one since that was sort of his thing. The OCs under Dave Wannstedt also served as a QB coach, and well, the results were mixed.
Coach Todd Graham appears to want a guy specifically teaching the QBs according to rumors/reports. The guy to do it is reportedly another Todd. In this case, Todd Dodge.
Dodge, for those unfamiliar with him, was considered one of the best high school coaches in the state of Texas. He ran an open offense (are we allowed to say “spread” with Graham — because that was what Dodge ran) called the “Air-Raid Offense.” Among Dodge’s QBs were Chase Daniel (Mizzou) and Greg McElroy (Alabama). In his last five years as a HS coach, his teams went 79-1.
Dodge bombed upon making the leap to the bottom of 1-A football with North Texas. A 6-37 record and fired mid-way through his 4th year. Now he’s ready to get back to things and will even be willing to venture out of Texas.
Dodge said he is willing to leave Texas if he can find the right job as a college assistant coach, but will remain in the state if he decides to take a job as a high school head coach. Dodge played at Port Arthur Jefferson and Texas before coaching at six Texas high schools and working twice at UNT, once as the passing game coordinator in 1992-93 before returning as head coach in 2007.
…
“I’m absolutely a better coach now,” Dodge said. “Any situation you are in, you have to improve, and I did. I can offer a lot coaching quarterbacks. I don’t need to be a coordinator, but I can be and could be. It’s always nice to have someone on your staff who has been a head coach. I understand the job. I want to get on a staff, use that experience and be a team player.”
Between Dodge’s connections to Texas high schools and his ability to develop QBs, this would be a fantastic hire for a position coaching spot.
NFL teams can have an unlimited number of coaches or as many as the owner is willing to pay.
I mean….he basically brought over the defenseive staff for a TERRIBLE tulsa defense…yikes.
though i do like the QB coach idea, esp. w/ this offense…
I hope Ziese keeps us up to speed on the recruiting too!
Coach Graham can’t help see Tino’s shortcomings when he reviews game film. You described Tino’s lack of accuracy spot on. He threw to the wrong shoulder where guys had to turn opposite the way they were running, stopping all their momentum. He threw where guys had to come back for the ball, whereas if the ball was thrown correctly, it would have allowed the receiver to continue running in stride for huge gains and long TD’s. He threw screen passes in a manner where all forward momentum the RB had was negated or he threw them too low or too high with the same forward momentum being negated.
YOU CAN NOT run an Air-Raid offense with a QB as inaccurate as Tino Sunseri. I just hope that TG is not obligated to play him because he’s a Pitt legacy or that he is trying to placate the former player alumni group.
He might have said what he said at the presser, as only a bone for the above mentioned group to gnaw on. He couldn’t come in on Day 1 and say he was going to replace the starting QB right off the bat.
He seems like a pretty smart guy who knows how to play the game, (the real game that is)
Bradley is getting passed over by Uconn apparently as well. Nobody wants the guy who has changed Joepa’s
diapers for the last 5 plus years I guess. I guess he’s tired of it too.
