Open Up A Bottle And Sit Back…

Last night was crazy with the Bradley to Pitt reports, retractions, repeat sequences. If you follow me on twitter, you know it was even more absurd with Chris Gates, Bryan of Pitt Script, Chris Peak of PantherLair and assorted others.

Not sure if it will bet that bad tonight, but it sure is shaping up that way.

Hearing Todd Graham talks with Pitt are heating up dramatically. If he gets the job, Steve Kragthorpe could be candidate to return to Tulsa.

That’s from Austin American-Statesman sports columnist Kirk Bohls.

And as to why Tom Bradley seems to have fallen back to the pack.

Word is Pitt and Bradley fell off over money for assistants. Wouldn’t be surprised to see talks pick back up though.

Which seems somewhat odd since Graham’s price tag is supposedly higher, that there would be yet another instance of Pitt nickel-and-diming on assistants.

Paul Chryst is in the mix, but Texas no longer appears to be vying for his services.

Sources tell Orangebloods.com Boise State OC Bryan Harsin and Major Applewhite will be co-coordinators at Texas.

Chryst still has options. He is reportedly being courted to be on Jason Garrett’s staff with the Dallas Cowboys.

Then there is an update from Paul Zeise.

Here is what I would call the darkhorse candidate of the group — former Pitt player Teryl Austin, who most recently was Florida’s defensive coordinator and has worked with the Seahawks, Cardinals and of course at Michigan.

Austin is a tremendous recruiter – remember when Michigan was kicking Pitt’s butt in Western Pennsylvania for guys like Steve Breaston? Well, that was Austin, who is from Sharon, Pennsylvania — and is considered one of the bright, young coaches from the assistant coaching ranks. His name has been linked to several other jobs and because of his Pitt ties his name has been thrown about in the rumor mill but this is what I’ve learned in the past few hours:

I’ve confirmed he is now a legitimate candidate and not just a guy on a wish list because he is a Pitt guy.

Craziness. Bad craziness.

I have opinions and theories about some of this.

Theory 1: Pederson is fighting for his own job right now. If Tom Bradley is hired, it is all but the end for him. By all accounts he stopped short of actively opposing him. He dismissed Bradley and any supporters of him out-of-hand.

To turn around and hire him now, would be more than a tacit admission of how much he screwed up and how little power he now has.

That would explain the apparent sudden re-engagement of Todd Graham, despite the higher price-tag. This would be Pederson’s hire. While it would tie his fate to Graham’s success or failure, it would at least keep his job for a while.

Theory 2: Graham realized he may have overplayed his hand for more money, and is trying to get back in for the Pitt job. Since he was an early candidate and there’s a lot of pluses for him, there is a legitimate discussion as to whether he is the better option.

Theory 3: It was never as much a done deal with Bradley as we were led to believe. All the leaks seem to have come from Bradley’s side of things. It may have been premature and things were overstated.

I just don’t know for sure, but I do know it is going to be a long night for me and my friend.

Am I the only person who wouldn’t trust Steve Pederson to be able to hire seasonal help at a friggin’ Dairy Queen at this point, let alone a coach?

Today Please-

Since they must be listening to you, can you please tell them we would mostly be okay with Bradley, Austin and someone with a little pop for OC. Ron Turner, sure, whatever. Just pay them, sign them and let us take a breath before we start picking them apart. The suspense is killing us.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.06.11 @ 8:17 pm

I heard from a reliable source that Pitt is seriously considering Joe Namath for the opening, especially since the right character is no longer the foremost consideration in the university’s decision.

Let’s get Pitt to make ex-coach Dave an assistant AD so he can replace SP in a year……… LOL

Comment by mtoolmn 01.06.11 @ 8:21 pm

PSU rivals board indicating that it is done. Welcome to Pitt Tommy!

Comment by panther 01.06.11 @ 8:25 pm

However, if SP follows his M.O., Tom Cable will soon be the new coach.

I think this whole ordeal has taught me what it must be like to be an Oakland Raiders fan.

Steve P = The Al Davis of College Football

Comment by upittman 01.06.11 @ 8:26 pm

@Panther – if it’s “done,” then doesn’t that (thankfully) mean that SP was completely out of the loop based on the presser that he held earlier?

Comment by Mike 01.06.11 @ 8:27 pm

They don’t want to pay anyone.

You will find nothing in print regarding Haywood’s salary other “close to 1 million dollars”

They never released the amount because it was embarrassing small.

What do you think they were willing to pay Haywood’s crew HAHAHAHA

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 01.06.11 @ 8:27 pm

Truth…my thoughts exactly…waiting for Tom Cable or an ex-Bed and Breakfast owner.

Since it seems we have a little time to waste, what ever happened to Bud Foster, DC at Virginia Tech, being one of the hottest candidates a few years back. It seemed like he was such a hot name and interviewing quite a bit (even for the Pitt job, right?), just to kind of sizzle out. Any reason behind this? He has been quite consistent down in Blacksburg (despite losing their last 3 to Pitt…heeeyyyooooohhhh!)

Thank God this is over!!!!

We have TOMMY BRADLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by panther 01.06.11 @ 8:31 pm

Also, took a look at the posted post-gazette link and thought it read ‘Pederson derails Pitt coaching search’…symantecs. It might as well read that for all I know.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 01.06.11 @ 8:32 pm

@Cool Hand Nuke – All I ever had seen was that he is just an atrocious interview – very straightforward and not polished. While that works as a beloved DC, it doesn’t tend to fly in interviews. I’d think that, coupled with the fact that he has reportedly shown interest in virtually every BCS HC opening has dilluted his cache quite a bit.

Comment by Mike 01.06.11 @ 8:34 pm

@Mike

very good point

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 01.06.11 @ 8:40 pm

Why are there so many fans of the spread offense on all these forums? Does Pitt have the right players for it? If not, will a coach survive long enough to recruit the right players (assuming that recruiting the right players is even feasible)? Did RichRod’s tenure show us nothing? Someone, please enlighten me with some solid rationale, facts, historical evidence, etc. I’m NOT saying spread offenses don’t work. They obviously do in the right circumstances. I’m merely asking if those circumstances can exist within the tenure of the next coach.

Comment by stevie mac 01.06.11 @ 8:46 pm

panther are you one of Jon Meyer’s sources?

Comment by Jason 01.06.11 @ 8:46 pm

Anyone posting “it’s Bradley. It’s a done deal” please fuck off!! U don’t know shit! Just relax and let it play out. I hope Chryst is the guy.

Comment by Scott 01.06.11 @ 8:47 pm

In Johnstown, members of Bishop Mccort’s athletic department are saying he told them he accepted the job… Expect an announcement tomorrow or Saturday.

I’d say the rest of these talks are SP fighting for his job…

Comment by MV 01.06.11 @ 8:50 pm

This is never going to end!

Comment by TodayPlease! 01.06.11 @ 8:53 pm

Please, please those who say it’s a done deal, reveal your sources. You’re not on the house intelligence committee.

Comment by Scott 78 01.06.11 @ 8:57 pm

I certainly don’t believe it’s a done deal, but I do believe that it’s Bradley’s job to lose, or SP’s job to lose for him. Bradley has way too much backing on this one. Not hiring him would be a slap in the face to some pretty influential people around the area.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 01.06.11 @ 8:58 pm

I’d also love to see footage of Bradley and Pederson in the ath. dept. coffee room together in the morning after this.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 01.06.11 @ 9:00 pm

I like how Pederson said that he had two firms vet Haywood. In other words, ‘DON’T BLAME ME.’
Yep, two firms and an X-mas card from Callahan and SP was sold.
If he is the AD when Pitt opens up next year, I dare him to meet and greet in front of Heinz. I dare him.

Comment by Gas 01.06.11 @ 9:00 pm

We need the owner of this site to hand it over to the Pitt faithful.

The way it works in Pittsburgh and Burgh media is this: and I believe this is how Bradley was rumored to be hired. Bradley is supported by the Rooneys(fact), who have their contacts in the media(fact). Those contacts were asked/told to suggest Bradley was offered the job, as a way to build public support for Bradley, thereby making it more difficult for Pitt to look somewhere else.
(subjection)

And it also makes Pitt look worse (yet again) in the public eye (we’re talking non-Pitt alum) and with certain aspects of the Burgh media, that’s always a consideration. (fact)

i agree 100% , why r the rooney’s involved…just like the winter classic instead of hockey players dropping the puck, and having a shootout they have bettis and franco

Comment by teezy76 01.06.11 @ 9:28 pm

BTW, I have nothing against Bradley, except that he went to State Pen & played at State Pen & coached his whole life at State Pen.

I had no idea his brother was head orthopedic surgeon or whatever for the Steelers. Nor did I know how much the Rooney’s were enamored with him

But this does make some sense now, of why the Steeelers go out of their way to have ex-PSU players on their roster and usually totally ignore ex-Pitt players. Glad we got that cleared up at least.

That said I would have no problem with Bradley as HC, provided he signs a loyalty pledge in the contract where he can’t jump ship to State Pen when Diaper Joe retires/dies. And if Pitt can get
Austin as DC that would be great too, but alas there’s always that little issue of money.

Comment by TwilightZone 01.06.11 @ 9:49 pm

Don’t they get that if you put a good product on the field you make money. Stop being cheap!
