The Pitt News sports blog had a fine liveblog of Dave Wannstedt’s press conference to announce “The Decision.” Er, no, that’s been done.

Here are some of the highlights:

“I am a Pitt guy. I am a Pittsburgh guy. I always have been and I always will be,” he said, his voice rising. “There have been a lot of coaches before me and there will be a lot of coaches here after me, but I can assure you . . .none of them will love Pitt as much as I have.”

I believe that, but it sure looks like his own personal pride came before Pitt in the past couple weeks.

Wannstedt said he is “proud” of how the players have handled themselves. “The focus should be on the players and how they’re playing. It should not be on their coach, who will not be coaching.”

“My loyalty to these players is to allow them to enjoy playing and to be the main focus of attention. It would be unfair for any part of their experience to be about the Pitt coach,” he said.

Wannstedt said the players will represent Pitt without him at the bowl game. “This is not the way I envisioned passing the torch, but I want you to know that I do so with the greatest appreciation for all that the University of Pittsburgh has done for me and my family.”

He also says he hasn’t made up his mind about the future. Will he stay at Pitt in another position. Maybe. Maybe not. Guess he’s not done keeping Pitt’s athletic department in the dark.

When asked why it took him so long to decide whether to coach the bowl game, Wannstedt said, “It didn’t, I just wasn’t going to tell you guys.”

Apparently “you guys,” also included the players, other coaches and Pitt’s administration.

Jabaal Sheard is out for the Apathy Bowl due to surgery on his elbow. Guess that means we get to see the future at DE now.

Phil Bennett is going to be the interim coach and will speak to the media around 5pm today.

AD Pederson was there, but did not speak. He did have a statement issued, however.

During a series of discussions leading up to today, Dave made indications it wasn’t likely that he would coach the bowl game. We did not know, however, whether his position would change once he began working with the team again and gave him the liberty to have the time to make a final decision. In anticipation of this decision, we talked with Phil Bennett about leading the program as the acting head coach for this bowl game. Phil Bennett has been a head coach, is respected by the players and staff, and will do a fine job leading the Pitt football team in Birmingham. We are fortunate to have someone with Phil’s talents available to assume this role.

Good luck in this one game Phil. Man, you are going to need it.

What’s wrong with Bendel saying Pederson’s silence is bizarre?

Can’t he just see the obvious? Or is he just fanning the flames. Sorry, I’m new to talk radio.

Todd Graham from Tulsa was interviewed by Pitt and not hired but they should reopen discussions. He is 36-17 in 4 years as a head coach in conference USA and has won 10 or more games 3 out of the last 4 years. He has gone to 3 bowl games the last 4 years and is 3-0 averaging 56 points a game in these wins. He finished the season winning 9 of his last 10 games including beating Notre Dame at ND. He is a spread guy and was 10th in the country in scoring with 39 pts a game.

Wanny’s actual decision is not a big deal, the way he handled it IS a big deal. I get that he felt blindsided and like he got the shaft, but he should have said that he wasn’t going to coach long ago.

More than anything he screwed his players. I liked Wanny because of his love for Pitt, and while I thought he needed to go, I felt bad for him. But the way he handled the decision to not coach the bowl game made me lost the remaining respect I had for him.

Holy hell my head is spinning from all this crap. I live in the Chicago area — can someone tell me why Pat Fitzgerald’s name never comes up? Is Northwestern really a better job than Pitt?

@gameday,

I cited similar stats after Tulsa’s bowl win and someone said they scored all those points against terrible teams.

And we currently play a slate of powerhouses? I say try him again, with more $$$.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.03.11 @ 6:28 pm

Antigua, are you sure Fitzgerald would get a raise by going to Ptt? Do you know what the TV revenue is for each B10 school?

Hasn’t what transpired over the past 3 weeks sunk into anyone here? … that our chief rival is willing to pay their coach about twice as much as what we pay!

Heck, try anyone with a record of success at his current level, in a clean program, whose success isn’t defined solely by a few superstar players.

Tj – I agree 100 percent!

Pat Fitzgerald is an interesting name. Only thing is he is a NWestern alum and my guess is that he is very happy staying there and given the success he has had he can probably stay there and be happy a very long time.

How about hiring someone that is known, that you don’t have to do a background check on???? hmmm

All on Pederson and Nordy, when fired, should have been fired. No way does a fired employee get to have a press conference. Nuts, absolutely nuts.

Having said above, if Pitt is such a Pitt guy, he shouldn’t have had a presser. Could have easily told Pitt people or the media what his decision was without coming out, with what I feel was a defiant tone.

The more I listen to it, as the radio stations keep playing it, the more I think he comes off sounding like a prick!!!!

Comment by Dan 01.03.11 @ 6:48 pm

if Wanny is such a Pitt guy, obviously!

Comment by Dan 01.03.11 @ 6:49 pm

Fitzgerald makes about $750K, so I would think Pitt could nearly double that. You’re right about him being a NU alum and probably content there, but I never hear even the slightest mention of him when jobs come up. Maybe it’s known he won’t leave unless we’re talking traditional powerhouse at $2.5M++.

Comment by Antiguafor200Alex 01.03.11 @ 6:57 pm

I still say something happened to make Wanny change his mind at the last minute. The players were sure he was going to coach. I can’t believe, that after the way they supported him at the press conference, he wouldn’t warn them.

JoeP…I just answered your question as to what I would do (and what I hoped Dave would do). I concur with your follow-up comment that it’s a train wreck and that’s not Dave’s fault at all. Where I think we disagree is that I feel Dave has piled on…especially after today (albeit today presumably could have been avoided with intervention from SP or Nordy). He’s unnecessarily been a part of the circus.

Agree with Pwmcdupitt.

Hmmmmm, let me see what has happened in the last few days to make Wanny change his mind about coaching. Hmmmmmm. (regardless of what Wanny said about making up his mind long ago and ‘not wanting to tell you guys’ yeah right)

I know, the guy they replaced him with to restore some discipline to the team, was arrested and charged with a felony.

Wanny is a good guy, but he’s not a complete fool.
Which is what he would have looked like coaching this team AFTER all that has happened.

And those of you who are complaining now about Wanny NOT coaching, please…….STOP.
This is what you wanted since the Miami game.

HE’S NOT COACHING, YOU SHOULD BE THRILLED.
