Working Around the Awkwardness

Well, new Coach Mike Haywood is trying to work while the whole situation remains weird.

While Haywood is working hard to get off to a running start on recruiting, he has had some challenges. Pitt (7-5) is playing in the BBVA Compass Bowl against Kentucky (6-6) on Jan. 8, which means Wannstedt and his staff are still working at least through that day. Haywood and Elias, who came to Pitt with Haywood from Miami (Ohio), had to get special waivers from the NCAA to be able to begin recruiting for Pitt because of limits on the number of full-time coaches permitted on a staff.

Haywood has not gone to the office until the evening and has worked into the early hours of the morning because he wants the players to understand it is still Wannstedt’s team until after the bowl game. He also wants to make sure the Panthers have every opportunity to end things on a positive note with a win against Kentucky.

“It is really important for me and for everyone, really, to give coach Wannstedt the respect which he deserves for the job he’s done,” Haywood said. “I never had the opportunity to meet him before, but now I’ve had two chances to sit down and talk with him and I even got a chance to sit back and watch a practice.

“Coach was really open and forthcoming. I wanted to find out his perspective on things, on the program, on what we need to do in recruiting, on who the key people are around the state — all of those things, and he was really open with information and extremely helpful.”

Haywood seems to be going above and beyond to show Coach Wannstedt respect. That will go a ways towards soothing some of the likely divisions in the locker room.

In the article Coach Haywood has also said the right things about recruiting and building relationships.

LaSala has been the backbone of the program’s administrative side for nearly 15 years. Junko, a former coach, is one of the most respected names in and around the Pitt program and among WPIAL coaches, and he has assisted in introducing Haywood to them and others.

Haywood said the three, along with his assistant head coach Bill Elias, are planning to have Pitt’s coaches visit communities throughout the state to build on the relationships former coach Dave Wannstedt established in his six years.

“We’re going to have the camps and have the prospects come on campus for visits for things like basketball games and other events,” Haywood said. “But I think it is really important that we go out and meet people, let them know who we are and what we stand for. Coach Junko and coach Elias and I have already started to form a plan to have three satellite camps — offsite camps or clinics — around the state, to kids who may not be able to afford to come to Pitt for our camps and [to give] their coaches a chance to meet us, to see how we operate.

“I think it will be very productive and it is very important for people to become familiar with our coaches, with how they coach, the things they teach. I’m really looking forward to that.”

One of the best things Coach Wannstedt did do at Pitt was work very hard at building connections across the state. You can mock his speech patterns and other things about him, but he always comes across as approachable and interested in listening to what you have to say. Those qualities helped build relationships across the state with alumni and high school coaches. Coach Haywood seems eager to build on that.

Still more than a week before the Apathy Bowl and then the process putting Haywood’s staff and actions under the microscope. Where you can expect every phrased parsed and reactions to them will be typically extreme — declaring disaster at every turn or that all will be unicorns and rainbows.

If Wanny had any perspective worth sharing he’d still have a job.

Any time there is a change in managers, anywhere, there is an amplification effect when comparing the old to the new. If the new boss is even slightly more strict than the old he is viewed by the team as Hitler. After a while the team adjusts to the new approach, but there is an adjustment period.

Comment by 66Goat 12.30.10 @ 11:23 am

Good point, these amplifications always seem to connect to what the team “needs” too. The team desperately needed discipline, so in comes Mr. Tough Guy. Then in a few years, his “message” won’t resonate any more, and the team will need a more “player friendly” coach. And the cycle continues. It’s an easy way of analyzing what is likely a more complicated issue.

Read an espn.com article about Stanford’s turnaround today, saw some of these similar strains– the team didn’t “react well” to Walt Harris’ disciplinarian approach and needed new “energy.”

Comment by Jason 12.30.10 @ 11:41 am

I have liked everything about Haywood so far with the exception of bringing in his senior citizen OC. How many recruits are going to be enthused by playing in a 74 year old mans offense that isnt exactly explosive? Now if he were some sort of offensive genius maybe but that doesnt seem to be the case.

Otherwise, I think Haywood will run a successful program.

Comment by Coach Ditka 12.30.10 @ 11:52 am

In the era when no news is often misconstrued as bad news, I’m glad there is a media update. Haywood continues to impress so far.

Comment by TonyinHouston 12.30.10 @ 12:02 pm

What this team “needs” is a winning attitude that carries over to winning on the field of play. Haywood turned around Miami 180 degrees in two years and produced a MAC Champion as a result of that turn around. Over the last 15 games in Wannesteadt’s tenure the only game he won of any significance was our bowl game last year, and that was squeaker with a winning field goal at the end. The sooner this team loses the legacy of playing “not to lose” the quicker this team develops into a winning program. Please Mr. Haywood, just make Pitt Football fun to watch again by teaching this team how win. I’m so tired of watching my team playing scared without imagination or the emotion necessary to win the big one.

Dr. Tom-

Ditto, ditto, ditto.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 12:34 pm

Here, here. Well said, Dr. Tom

Comment by Dan35 12.30.10 @ 2:05 pm

Based on the OC CV he is the same age as Coach Ditka and Dick LeBeau. I don’t think that makes him too old for the job. If they run the NE Patriots offence as has been said, it has potential to be as exciting as the spread. As we know, it isn’t the offensive style its the players.

Comment by PittLetterman 12.30.10 @ 2:08 pm

On the other hand, he could be a doddering old fool like JoePa.

Comment by Scott 12.30.10 @ 2:55 pm

Ten years ago Joe was still pretty sharp.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 3:04 pm

Haywood so far has been a class act.

Comment by James from Dallas 12.30.10 @ 4:29 pm

I like the idea that Haywood is a college coach with an impressive resume, and ahould have a good idea as to what it takes to be successful. Plus, the new (older) OC seems to be much less conservative that te old (younger) OC.

Of course, all this speculation means very little … but it would make us feel better if they are able to put togther a decent recruiting class. Plus, the cupboard isn’t exactly bare so I, for one, am looking forward to a pretty quick upgrade.

Comment by wbb 12.30.10 @ 5:36 pm

Waddya know? A big east team beat an opponent from a bcs aq conference. Way to go ‘Cuse.

Comment by Scott 12.30.10 @ 7:55 pm

And Coach Wannstedt wasnt professional.. give the guy some credit he could have said screw you ! Dave was a terrible game day coach so do you think it was the (OC) fault or Dave being DAVE? Check the stats out (OC) Watts didnt tear it up at Miami U. Does anyone on here read stats or do you just form opinions because you dont like someone? I would also like to point out Winning the (Mac) is like being the coolest person in Prison, your cool but your still a loser in prison.

Dave’s record 42–31

Mike’s record 10–15

So what college head football Experience is everyone refering to? If you have been a PITT fan long enough pay your respects to the dead guy in the room and move on.

Comment by POLE 12.30.10 @ 8:27 pm

DAVE and his players also achieved its first 10-win season since 1981. So what is better a 10 win PITT team or a 9-4 MAC school? that lost to all the big name schools it played, (sounds like the same team just a different conference)

Comment by POLE 12.30.10 @ 8:37 pm

I am no longer on DAVE’S bandwagon I just wish PITT would have done a better job at hiring a bigger named coach that would have brought more buzz to the program not some dork that quotes Freddy Krueger and Martin Luther King in the same speech.

Comment by POLE 12.30.10 @ 8:43 pm

What is this obsession with BUZZ? DW had lots of buzz, Rich Rod to Michigan had lots of buzz, for pate’s sake, Charlie Weis to ND had buzz. Buzz is useless noise from a mindless crowd. Long term results are the only thing that matters, and we won’t know what they are for two or three years. Some expensive failure that they have to dump after a few years wouldn’t do us any good either. This might be the best thing to ever happen to Pitt, or it might be a disaster, but BUZZ has nothing to do with it.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 8:59 pm

Amen, brother. I couldn’t care less about buzz being generated by any other way but wins next fall. I understand what the Athletic Department wants off-season buzz; it helps sell preseason ticket packages. But it’s not my athletic budget, so I personally don’t care much about preseason ticket sales.

Besides, if the team wins then ticket sales (and the all-important BUZZ) will follow.

Comment by Navy Panther 12.30.10 @ 9:06 pm

I must not know what i am talking about Dick Rod sucked at WVU (60–26) terrible , terrible record. minus Dick rod, DW and Weis where great Coordinators just not very good head coaches. Buzz puts AZZes in the seats , buzz brings recruits to the school and sells lots of merchandise. So i guess i am mindless?

Comment by POLE 12.30.10 @ 9:14 pm

POLE, not slamming you but there has been a lot of lamenting over Coach Hayward’s relatively low profile. Buzz only helps bring in fans and recruits until the team loses a couple of early high-profile games.

Consisten winning is the only way to create sustained fan interest and better recruiting, no matter how famous the coach is prior to taking the job.

Comment by Navy Panther 12.30.10 @ 9:20 pm

Coach *HAYWOOD*

So low-profile I forgot how to spell it!

Comment by Navy Panther 12.30.10 @ 9:22 pm

What if the wins don’t come right away? If you read the stories about Haywood’s turn around at Miami, he had no problem with sitting, or even cutting loose, veterans that didn’t work hard enough. That could leave a pretty thin roster until the players believe that things have changed. I think expecting an instant turn around is not realistic.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 9:23 pm

I agree with you but ,i know everyones going to say i am beating a dead horse,(chris pererson)or a better known coach that has more than 2 season under his belt. I also know that nothing is sure in this life other than death. football players, coaches, athletic directors the jury is still out, so i guess we will have to wait and see. ME PERSONALLY I have no fear of the word BUZZ. I love to turn on ESPN,ESPNU or NFL NETWORK and hear BUZZ about our players. When i watch NFL football with all the PENN STATE fans in my family , i like to say stuff like YEA, Larry Fitzgerald (PITT) Revis(PITT) Ditka ect…last year the BUZZ was we beat NAvy, Iowa,ND and would have been 10 and 0 if we would have shown up to play NC state. consistency if we had that i wouldnt come on this site anymore i wouldnt have anything to make my point. Better yet let me and NAVY Panther run stuff around here!

Comment by POLE 12.30.10 @ 9:43 pm

IF the wins dont come right away there is going to be problems and not just from People on Pittblather.

Comment by POLE 12.30.10 @ 9:46 pm

Pole, despite your taking it as a personal attack (you are far from the only person on the blogs calling for a flashy hire) you made my argument for me. Weis and DW were hired with lots of fanfare but just did not get the results that were expected, and ended up costing the schools to replace them. I may have missed it, but I don’t think I have read that any of the currently successful, big buzz, head coaches are changing jobs right now. As for Leach, he was available last year and no one took him, he is available now and even with the Under Armour money pushing for him (and paying for him) Maryland seems to be the only school bidding for him, and even that isn’t a sure thing. The schools must know that his buzz has a sting. (sorry)

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 9:49 pm

Turn around? I have no problem with DW being fired…I have no problem with Mike Haywood being hired…I have a problem with enterning next season with any other expectation than winning the Big East. It’s not the toughest conference in the country…We were co-big east champions this year…We have 17 starters and 23 redshirts returning from this year…This is not a rebuilding project! Haywood runs a pro-set offense that relies on the run to control the game, so this is not a radically new offense. His defense is more aggressive. He was hired to do something DW could not, and that is win BE Championships…There is no reason why we should not expect to win the BE next year.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.30.10 @ 9:52 pm

This team has some glaring holes to fill. Most notably on offense… LT,QB,C,maybe RT, the TE’s and a star quality WR. On Defense, the DE’s (although Lindsey is back I presume),the LB’s are a mess(probably why Quinton Alston decided to remain committed), the secondary other than Holley & Hendricks is weak. And we also have to find a punter & place kicker. At the most that person will be starting for the first time.

Unless he finds some quality juco O-linemen, we could have the same problem running the ball and of course throwing the ball. If you can’t run, you have to have a great QB, we don’t as of yet.(I mean maybe Myers is that guy)

I see another trip to a nowhere bowl at the most.
Only because the BigEasy is so weak. Hey the conf. did beat a 7-5 big 12 team and a team from c-usa so maybe things are looking up for the conf. Sure.

Comment by cathedralofblabber 12.30.10 @ 9:54 pm

I live smack in the middle of the mindless PSU fan kingdom, and I would dearly love to shut them up, too, but the buzz of the pre-season 15 ranking, and the crash of reality just made it worse. The successful Pitt players in the NFL aren’t buzz, they get press because of results. The excitment because of the wins you mention are because of results. The talk because of a coach hire is meaningless. I don’t care what the talk is, I want results.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 10:02 pm

Well you say tomato, I say tomato. Just win and we wont have anything to dissagree about. I have been posting on here for a while now anyone can say anything they want about my post i will in no way be offended actually i encourage it too bad we didnt have a live chat on here everyday.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 10:13 pm

We will save that on for another time we have already hijacked this post! We can agree that we both love PITT! I was going to say we both bleed gold and blue but that would get confusing… the old blue or the new blue and the gold mustard or the new gold…..

Comment by POLE 12.30.10 @ 10:21 pm

Haywood’s radio interview on rivals.com radio was very good. He even mentioned the old classic uniforms of when he watched Tony Dorsett as a kid.
So maybe………

Comment by cathedralofblabber 12.30.10 @ 10:38 pm

Come on, can everyone drop the irrational man-crush on Holgorsen already? That he agreed to that goofy setup in Morgantown doesn’t speak well of him, and is a recipe for disaster for those guys this year.

Comment by Navy Panther 12.31.10 @ 12:43 am

I’m still amazed at the folks who expect Haywood to hang the moon at Pitt. There is no way in the world he wins a BE Championship within 3 years. It will not happen… Changes coaches, especially to a man who had ONE winning season in the MAC. He may very well build Pitt into a winner but it will take 4-5 years. The other programs in the Big East have a substantial amount of momentum and we look like a chopshop program the way this whole hire, fire situation is taking place. At the end of the day, Haywood is making almost 1m because he has discipline. So do drill sergeants and we can get one for 50k a year. This man was passed over by so many teams it is comical. I do not like the hire but I will support the team. Just have realistic expectations that it will take 4-5 years for him to produce a real winner. Not a 7-5 kind of winner and in my opinion they will fire him before that happens… If they want instant winner they hired the wrong cat. In my opinion they do not really care about football as much as we think. I think they really do not want to be competitive but more importantly have the kids just stay out of the news and trouble. Happy New years!

Bingo! I’ll modify one point – PITT wants to be competitive but not at the expense of the University’s reputation.

Comment by Reed 12.31.10 @ 5:51 am

The only thing you can really bet on is my Game Default Swap, with a current yield of 5.234%.

Thus if the Pitt football team actually shows up to play in their upcoming bowl game you receive $1.05234 for every dollar you “invest.”

Anyway, Happy New Year to all.

Comment by Stuart Margolin 12.31.10 @ 7:43 am

We know nothing. Next year will be a crap shoot with all the variables that are currently evident. Haywood is going to have 10 scholarships burning a hole in his pocket from the looks of it now. Those “glaring holes” in our position round up previously mentioned might just be filled by some unproven JUCO recruit come fall. Anybody remember a guy named OTAH? Imagine the team attitude when every player realizes that they actually have the opportunity to audition for playing time with this new staff without having to wait behind the “experienced” players crowned starters via the Wannesteadt philosophy of playing those guys with previous game time. This Pitt cupboard is far from bare. Haywood better be up to the task though because I agree that this fan base is not going to be patient while waiting for results. Nothing less than a winning season will keep Haywood out of the hot seat right off the bat. I don’t think that will be fair to him but it will be the reality that he is going to have to face. Winning the Big East right out of the starting blocks, a tall order, but as I always say “that is why they play the games”. We’ll see, in any case there will be a lot more to talk about with this team next year than there would have been if Wanny had still been at the helm. That’s for sure.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.31.10 @ 8:38 am

One thing that must be realized …. Haywood has MUCH more to work with this year than Wanny did in 05 …. I will guarantee you that Haywood will not have to begin the season with 3 natural freshmen starting on the line.

Haywood also appears to be in a less competitive conference (although one can never tell) than in 05.

While there is no doubt an adjustment time necessary to implement a new system, I expect Pitt to challenge for the BE championship …. and probably Haywood will not have the expectatio that Wanny had this year …. being rated No. 1 by te foolish media despite having 11 returning starters (least in the BE)and many question marks, while WVU has 18 returning starters and UConn had 17.

do you get the feeling that mike white giggled the entire time he wrote that article?

as for the future, enough with the hyperbole from both sides of the argument. no one knows what success or failure lies ahead for Coach Haywood. what we do know is Wanny had 6 years, never won an outright conference championship, never went to a bcs game, went to only 2 bowl games going 1-1, and had a less than mediocre 4-8 record against ranked opponents. he’s gone. haywood is here. get over it.

I’m a Pitt Alumni and now former fan. Once again, the administration took the cheap way out. Once again, S. Peterson screws up … or is it Nordenburg behind the scenes. We should have hired T. Bradley. Yea, yea, I know the whole PSU deal, which I had to get over as well. But think about it. He WANTED the job (not once but twice). He knows defense. He knows West. Penna. and he knows recruiting. A 74-year old OC? Gimme a break! Are we running the wing-T? I GIVE UP ON THIS ADMINISTRATION. When it comes to football, they could screw up a cup of coffee. I’m not wasting my money & time with this crowd anymore.

Happy New Year PITT fans.

Here is my New Year resolution

1) Same as the last 10 years (this time I will make them work at least until Feb 1)

2) Forget about 2010. Time to look forward to the NEW PITT Panther football team with a NEW attitude (Unfortunately this will not begin until Jan 9th since they the OLD team and coaches play on Jan 8th. But hey who said Jan 1 was a hard date for New Year Resolutions)

3) Think BIG real BIG about PITT Basketball. FINAL FOUR BABY!!!!! The BE Tournament Championship is a gimmie. Time to jump the hurdle of the Sweet 16

4) Keeping my football season tickets (did anyone really think that I was going to give up those great seats over a little spilled milk? Those guys next to me have been eyeing my seats for years (even sat in them a few times when I was late))

5) Having FUN with PITT Athletics. Relax. Chills. We havent won a national championship in football since 1976 or a heisman since 1975. Thats 35 years folks. In my life time I have seen the following Championships – Steeler 6 Super Bowls (75,76,79,80,06,09) Pirates 2 World Series (71,79), Pens 2 Stanley Cups (91,92), PITT Football National Championship (76), Heisman (75), Pitt Basketball BE Championship 03,08(the first one felt like winning the NCAA tournament!)

Hey 11 National Championships, 1 National award, and 2 BE Basketball Championships (almost as coveated as the NCAA trophy – 2nd in line) isnt bad. So I am going into 2011 feeling pretty good about life. Maybe we are all just a little to spoiled about winning.

Time to chill and go with the flow. Less Pressure for sure. Living in Atlanta puts it all in perspective. (Championships: Falcons – none, Thrashers – none, Hawks – none, Braves – 95, Gtech football 90, Dawgs football – 80)

Comment by PITT fan in Atlanta 12.31.10 @ 10:36 am

Even if I was a KState fan, I wouldn’t have been too disappointed yesterday. They gave it their all and it was a fun game to watch. I know they were both mediocre (or worse) teams in the pantheon of Div 1 football, but all you can ask is that your team plays hard until the clock runs out, and they both did.

Here’s to watching more games like that in 2011, and on.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.31.10 @ 11:02 am

Reed – Sorry I had a typo, I’ meant to say…

“In my opinion they do not care about football as much as we think. I think they really want to be competitive but more importantly have the kids just stay out of the news and trouble.”

I see it that way… Stay out of trouble and have a disciplined leader #1. If we win that is fine also but it isn’t the priority.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.31.10 @ 12:05 pm

Hey Steve brain dead Pederson

Are you serious? Are you 7 years old and don’t remember that he turned Pitt athletics around once already. He hired Ben Howland, a no name basketball coach from a no name school and a no name conference and looked what happened. He hired Walt Harris and look what he did for Pitt football. I know Pitt fans love to hate Harris, but he was 10 times better than Wanny and look at Pitt’s record under him, the big wins under him and the players that have gone on to the pro’s under him.

Lets get a grip and recognize Pederson’s for what he has done at Pitt.

Comment by DJDave 12.31.10 @ 12:51 pm

DJDAVE,

Pederson was hired to do his job. Part of that is hiring good coaches. The man did what he was hired to do. So Howland was a great find, Dixon is a doing well. (Would love to see them actually make the final four) but the Wanny hire and this Haywood hire (Yes it is early) are absurd. I believe in Diamonds in the Rough, but this guys track record as an assistant is terrible. Hid HC experience in at a MAC Program and he has a losing record at that. SO Pederson has done some good and a lot of bad. Ask Nebraska what they think of him.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.31.10 @ 1:47 pm

UPittBaseball,

I think you are spot on with this statement. Everyone seems to feel that the Wanny firing had to do with the lack of winning on the field.

I think two things that lead me to believe that this was not the case are the following:

1> Ziese after the fact started to “hear” that discplinary/academic issues under Wanny were starting to increase.

In prior postings during the season in which Ziese would state that Wanny isn’t going anywhere it always had to do with he is doing the non-football stuff very well and Mark Nordenberg likes him and values those non-football items (going to class, academics, etc., etc.)

2> Listen again to Mike Haywood’s first press conference. The main theme or topic if you will, was discipline. It wasn’t winning a National Championship, it wasn’t implementing an effective scheme…it was discipline.

I don’t think the majority of fans felt the discipline issue was the root of the Wins/Losses.

To me that is extremely indicative of what happened with Wanny. This wasn’t primarily about football. Wanny started sliding on the non-football stuff and lost Nordy’s confidence and that in the end cooked his proverbial goose.

IMHO…

one other thing about the press conference…

when I heard it, I was a bit perplexed…it didn’t match up to whatI thought were the expectations of bringing a winner to Pitt football.

It just did not sync up to what I expected to hear. I remakred to my brother the other day (also a Pitt alum) that I felt the press conference was more for Nordy than for the season ticket holders/fans.

I don’t think most of us care how old the o.c. is, the problem is he averages something like 19 or 20 points a game. Get me Rip Van Winkle for all I care if he can put up 30-40 a game!

Chas, I prefer unicorns and rainbows, and, I actually think disaster would be interesting. Please though, please, no more 5 years of the same old thing. Let’s put “same old pitt” away for awhile!!!

PLEASE don’t be a moron and drink the koolaid about a discipline porblem at Pitt. We all know that if Pitt lived up to expectations and won the BE title outright, there would be no discipline issue.

Urban Meyer won 2 national titles at UF and there was no discipline issue even though 27 UF players were arrested in the short time he was there.

Mark Mangino was a YouTube sensation when he grabbed a player who got a celebration penalty by the facemask and yanked it while spewing the F word at least a half dozen times. That year Kansas won the Orange Bowl and Mangino was widely applauded for bringing discipline to KU. A few years laer he was outside looking in after a 6-6 season, and his methods were now deemed as outmoded.

Ah the hypocrisy … you win big, and there is no disicipline problem …it is as simple as that.

And why didn’t any of the many other programs that are looking for coaches hire those star coaches? maybe they like where they are? Maybe where they are made it worth their while to stay there? If you have secret inside information, instead of hysteria, please share it.
