LiveBlog: UConn-Pitt

Welcome to semi-Big Monday. The game starts at 8:30.  It’s an ESPN2 affair as there is still Monday Night Football. There’s also the chance of a delay because of the bowl game airing ahead of it.

This game is obviously a lot bigger than ESPN and the Big East thought it would be. Mainly on the UConn side this year. Middle of the pack to lower half of the Big East was the UConn expectations — like Pitt from last year. Instead, #4 national ranking. Perhaps a tad overinflated, but reasonably earned to this point.

As usual, moderated chat. Let’s try and stay focused on the basketball tonight.

If you need to break out the livechat from the site, Click Here. Other wise it is below.

Win or lose, this game is a good measuring stick. It’s hard to tell where this team is considering the number of cupcakes we’ve played lately. I’m anxious to see what we learned in the loss to Tennessee and how we’ll apply it to a team that’s on the same level.

Comment by Scott 12.27.10 @ 6:31 pm

Tough way to start the Big East, especially with the Zoo on Holiday. Let’s hope Gibbs is hot.

Let’s go Pitt.

Comment by gc 12.27.10 @ 6:47 pm

Sleepy’s breakout game, soon to be another GTG.

Comment by steve 12.27.10 @ 6:51 pm

Two wishbone teams, game’ll start on time.

Comment by steve 12.27.10 @ 6:58 pm

We have a great coach and a good team but i think we are short that one superior player but he will be here next year KB will be are Kimbo Walker. hail to pitt.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.27.10 @ 7:12 pm

Gotta believe that KB won’t have much of an impact next year. Jamie will probably start him off slowly. Look at how hard DT has had to fight for minutes and he came in with a big rep too. Too early to think about next year anyway. This team has a chance to be special.

Comment by Scott 12.27.10 @ 7:50 pm

Nice. That was a very satisfying win.

Comment by Shawn 12.27.10 @ 10:43 pm

Great coaching, preparation and execution. Aside from the foul shooting, a joy to watch as a coach and a huge Jamie Dixon Pitt Fan! Great game@

Comment by Dan 72 12.27.10 @ 10:44 pm

One guy will not beat Pitt.

Comment by steve 12.27.10 @ 10:49 pm

Well done, Panthers!

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 12.27.10 @ 10:50 pm

What a great game and victory. So nice not to think or comment about football for a few hours.

Comment by Scott 12.27.10 @ 10:53 pm

I have cherished every Pitt game, even the few losses, that I’ve been able to watch since Jamie Dixon became coach. Free throw shooting sometimes suffers from teams that work that hard on defense, but other than that, his teams always work so hard and he gets to much out of unheralded players.

I thought this UCONN team was a but overrated but Dixon had such a good game plan. If you watched that Tennessee game, those guys were just on fire for more than 25 minutes. This team is going to be dangerous in the NCAA tournament. I know that’s a bit far off, but I just have that feeling.

Comment by Glen Frankenfield 12.27.10 @ 10:56 pm

Great way to start the Big East season. I, however, can’t get over how many teams there are in our conference. Think about this….Pitt will not play UCONN until the playoffs in Madison Square Garden. In fact, another great rivalry will only see one game this year//Pitt Vs. Georgetown. Yes, it helps Pitt because both the Huskies and Hoyas are solid teams (especially at home), however, it shows how screwed up the Big East really is…..Basketball Si//Football NO!!
Seton Hall, DePaul, Providence and Marquette should be looking elsewhere for a place to play.

Comment by isnore 12.27.10 @ 10:59 pm

Awesome performance, national t.v., fantastic crowd, lots of “gold rush”. Praise after praise for Pitt from the announcers and ESPN S.C. after the game. “Where top 5 teams come to die”!! LOVE IT!!! Ben and Jamie, can’t even believe we’re in the place we are with hoops.

Best comments, said several times, referring to the last 8 to 10 years, “this is a little early for the Big East’s power match up”, saying it non-chalantly, like that’s the way it is, and the way it’s been. I guess it has, but, can anyone believe, 15 to 20 years ago, we’d be mentioned as a national and Big East power (not just tonight, the past several years) so matter of factly when talked about.

I might also add, we’re talked about often, that “lack of respect” card is, and frankly, has been done for some years. Pitt is everywhere on ESPN and CBS hoops. Always mentioned in a positive light. I also know this first hand, from friends, neices, nephews and others from around the country, all I ever hear is, “why is Pitt always on”. “Everytime I turn the tv on it’s Pitt this or Pitt that”.

The best came from my brother n law in So. California, “I turn the friggin tv on, there’s Jamie Dixon pulling a guy out of a car”.

Someday, the final four and a championship, but to Ben and Jamie, couldn’t ask for anything more, the past 10 years have been a college basketball fans dream. Awesome, baby, awesome!!!

Comment by Dan 12.27.10 @ 11:14 pm

Now, Chas, should I mention anything about football, or just go to bed?????????
Goodnight!!!

Comment by Dan 12.27.10 @ 11:16 pm

Great win awesome Dixon walks on water great coach good team made my day.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.27.10 @ 11:23 pm

great win, complete domination.

Uconn isn’t as good as their #4 ranking indicated.

Nice job with the free throw shooting tonight.

Comment by tj 12.27.10 @ 11:42 pm

Coach Dixon does an excellent job coaching up his kids. However, the shooting technique of some of his players makes my stomach turn. Watching Robinson, Taylor, McGhee, and Gilbert shoot foul shots or shots short perimeter is very painful. These players obviously put in alot of time into their games during the offseason, but somehow shooting technique escapes them. Hire a shooting coach if you have to. At least have the big guys show better form. Its terrible!

Comment by Z-Boy 12.27.10 @ 11:43 pm

I’d be hard pressed to find anything “terrible” about a team that just put a 15 point licking on the supposed #4 team in the country

Comment by Dock71 12.28.10 @ 12:10 am

Granted Uconn maybe a bit overrated.. but I’ll still think they are a top 25 team.. and the D really showed up today. Walker had to work for everything.. and nobody else really helped out for Uconn, but walker is capable of winning games himself. Good pinching on walker and good team D.

Comment by Snala The Panther 12.28.10 @ 12:21 am

“Seton Hall…should be looking elsewhere for a place to play.”

isnore, I thought that you live in the NY/NJ area. Is that true? And you want to kick Seton Hall out of the BE??? Me? I enjoy going to the Prudential Center ever other year to watch the Pitt-SH game.

Comment by BigGuy 12.28.10 @ 12:38 am

Best defensive performance of the season. Kemba got his points but he worked his ass off for them. The team could have rebounded better on the defensive end, but they did what they needed to do. I really liked Gilbert’s game today. A few unnecessary shots, but a great floor game. A million years from the Tennessee game.

Comment by Omar 12.28.10 @ 12:46 am

Awesome game but I’ll keep this in perspective. That was a one-man team if I’ve ever seen one. Cuse, Nova, and G’town are all more well-rounded but that was a great way to start off the Big East sked.

Comment by Tony Cancilla 12.28.10 @ 1:01 am

Little doubt after the first few minutes, right guys? I love that building. We’re just unbeatable under the roof, its probably some old Navajo magicks from the ruins of Pitt Stadium.

I’m not even looking forward to Gtown/Cuse/Nova. Providence beat us when we were #1 and if not for a 1/3 court bomb from Gibbs we’d be 0-2 the last two years.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by tacocat 12.28.10 @ 1:53 am

UConn would be ranked about #4 in the Atlantic 10, but it’s still good to beat them.

Lamb and Napier are really nice freshmen, but those big guys stink. I mean stink. Calhoun lives and dies by his strategy of finding raw size and then polishing it, but good luck polishing those turds.

Solid game from McGhee, Wanamaker and Gibbs consistent, Brown the usual enigma, Woodall still right-handed and I thought Robinson had a very nice game.

Still wondering about the JJ Moore minutes. He took a three-pointer within seconds of entering the game, he was late getting in position on the Walker charge call, he could have been called for the foul on the Olander elbow, a tipped pass of his led to a turnover/layup and he unsuccessfully tried to split a double with the dribble on a play where most BE guards will pick him and go the other way.

It could be true that they’ll need his offense against better competition, so I’m not ready to jettison the idea of playing him, but he’d have to show me more in the few minutes he’s getting. I also realize that he needs to adjust to these Big East games, so I’ll reserve judgement for a while and see how it goes. But I can’t help wondering if we’ll all be wishing we had this year of his back a couple seasons down the road when I expect him to be a heckuva scorer in this league……

Comment by hugh green 12.28.10 @ 8:34 am

Great win.

Does anyone remember a Pitt BB team that could shoot free throws? My wife and I were talking about some game at the field house (I want to say a trip to the NCAA’s was on the line). Sean Miller to shoot 2. 1 to tie 2 to win. They flash his lifetime free throw percentage on the field house scoreboard, it read “.927”. First one bounces out, the 2nd was a brick. Ugh. I can’t imagine what it is like to be a student there now…

From listening to them lose to St. Francis PA on the radio in some drafty Atwood St. apt in the early 90’s to watching Pitt beat top 5 teams is surreal.

The C&P Pitt club still has some tickets to the G’town game.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Yeti 12.28.10 @ 8:45 am

Z-Boy…if you think it is tough for you, I taught foul shooting ala Buzzy Braeman for about 7 years as a coach. I have never seen worse technique from the players that you mentioned. It is not all that difficult to use the proper balance and shooting motion. I am amazed when Robinson’s shots even hit the rim.

Great win by Pitt…Dixon really had em ready to play.

Comment by Dan 72 12.28.10 @ 8:49 am

Big Guy:
I lived in Noo Yawk for more than 60 years, however, I am now in good old Pennsylvania.
“The Hall” is the only major basketball team in New Jersey (Rutgers pretends to play basketball).
The problem for Seton Hall is that it has a small fan base and has had a long string of very unproductive recruiting despite being located in an area with OUTSTANDING high school teams. The basic problem has been poor coaching choices.
Seton Hall offers a quality education, however, it does not have a campus or location that is “sexy” for potential recruits. Yep, I know the exact same words can be said on behalf of St. John’s, however, there is NO WAY that the Big East will ever drop the Johnnies (nor should they). I was simply trying to point out that the Big East is OVERWEIGHTED with basketball teams and in dire need for at least another quality football program to join the ranks.
The real Pitt Panthers showed up last night and coaching is the reason!!

Comment by isnore 12.28.10 @ 9:15 am

Great game by Pitt. I thought the rotations were interesting. Hardly any Zanna and no Patterson. Dixon stuck with his experience in this game and took no chances. I really liked how Robinson played, tough and energetic and knew when to take it to the hoop (like J. Brown). He isn’t the most athletic guy but he is smart and strong and I love to see his progress.

Comment by WC Steve 12.28.10 @ 9:21 am

Nice to see a fast start from the Panthers. UConn never recovered from that. And by the time Walker got going it was too late, because Pitt is so efficient in their half court offense.

Solid defensive plan from Jamie. He knows he doesn’t have a shutdown guy to stop quick guards like Walker so he made sure that was the only person who could hurt him. And the pinch made Walker work for every shot and forced him into a lot of bad ones.

Great confidence builder to start BE play, just like ‘Cuse last year.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 12.28.10 @ 9:22 am

Dan, couldnt agree more. I coached for quite awhile and while im not going to compare myself to college coaches, I agree with you completely that its not that difficult to get a kid to stay balanced and follow through with their shot. At least be able to release the ball straight from one hand.

Comment by Z-Boy 12.28.10 @ 9:27 am

Hugh,
Thought we actually got some really good minutes out of Moore. Not an impressive stat line, but he didn’t make too many mistakes and hit those 3 free throws. He’ll continue to improve. It was nice to see him come into a big game and play fairly decent. It’s great to have a clone of Brown to put in there when he gets into foul trouble.

Comment by TJ 12.28.10 @ 9:35 am

I mentioned this during the liveblog, but was anyone else surprised with McGhee’s play last night? A hook shot? A tip-in off a missed foul shot? The overall aggressiveness and decent hands? A double-double? I didn’t know he had that in him, and with a national audience to boot!

Comment by Lou 12.28.10 @ 9:46 am

I also thought Taylor gave some good minutes despite playing on a balky knee. Again, it didn’t necessarily show up in the stat line, but he was aggressive and played pretty good defense.

Free throw shooting was actually pretty good last night – 23 for 30, which comes out to 77%. I agree that Robinson and McGhee show terrible form from the line (and were 4 for 9 combined, which is below awful), but everyone else did well.

It was interesting to me that Patterson never got off the bench, despite the fact that at one point it seemed that everyone would foul out. I don’t like to think too much about the numbers game with the players coming in next year, but you have to wonder what the future holds for Patterson.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.28.10 @ 9:52 am

Boy was I wrong about the Zoo being on holiday. It was amazing how the volume rose every time the shot clock got to 10.

Everyone played well. McGhee made a huge difference making his bunnies and ferocious rebounds. Gibbs was spectacular. Robinson played one of his best games. Wanny and Brown were steady. Taylor’s rebounding has improved and it looks like he can make free throws. Everyone contributed. Passing was super. I thought Moore looked like he belonged defensively, which is why you get minutes on a Dixon team. This team is deep. It is hard to see them play any better.

Comment by gc 12.28.10 @ 10:15 am

Last night was purely Old Guys beating Young Kids. Pitt started 3 seniors and 2 juniors, almost unheard of in today’s college basketball.

Did anyone else think last night’s game was poorly officiated? Worse than normal. Too many whistles and inconsistent calls. They’d blow a call, then immediately come back with a make up call. Made a potentially good game, kind of hard to watch. That’s the way it felt sitting in the Pete, was it like that on TV? ESPN needs to figure out a way to make sure Jim Burr’s crew doesn’t do their games.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 12.28.10 @ 10:17 am

Really amazing to compare the Big East football conference against the Big East BB conference. No respect door mat conference in football but in basketball half of the teams in the top 10 are from the Big East! Opposite ends of the spectrum. I sure would like some of that round ball success to rub off on the football programs around our conference.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.28.10 @ 10:18 am

Boubacar – I was at the game, and I agree that it was poorly officiated. There was no consistency, particularly to the moving pick, hand-checking and charging calls. The result was (i) nobobdy seemed to know what was being permitted, and (ii) almost everybody was in foul trouble before the halfway point of the second half. At one point in the second half, Pitt had been called for 9 fouls to UConn’s 3, which is pretty unusual.

At one point, Jim Burr made one of his strange calls that only he can see, and a fan sitting in the courtside seats clearly said something not very nice loud enough for Burr to hear. Burr turned and glared at the fans, and appeared ready to throw somebody out, but couldn’t figure out who had said what. The next couple times down the court Burr made some strange calls against Pitt (including a foul under the basket that he called from almost half court and must have seen through at least 4 players, while the ref right on top of the play didn’t see anything). Coincidence? You be the judge.

I’ll be honest, I’ve long thought that Jim Burr and Tim Higgins are two of the worst officials in college basketball. I know that this flies against the grain of what the TV talking heads say, but they both seem too willing to insert themselves into the flow of a game. It also seems that when they feel disrespected by a coach or fans (as Burr obviously was last night), they will make “message” calls that needn’t be based on any observable fact. I don’t think Pitt gets hurt by this any more than any other team, but as a fan, I find it annoying.

Comment by Pantherman13 12.28.10 @ 10:41 am

I was ready to lose my mind on that foul call Burr made from half-court. That is unacceptable and I would hope that is something Dixon could take up with BE officials.

Agreed, UCONN was over rated, remember though, they beat Michigan St (i know 8-4, not typical, none the less, they beat Izzo’s Spartans) and put an absolute whooping on Kentucky!!! So, let’s not put them in the Atlantic 10 or Sun Belt just yet.

Hey, easy on Zeise and his cold, he’s the hardest working man in sports today, just ask him, he’ll tell ya!!!!
