During the press conference, twitter among Big East and Pitt fans had a nice surge and it was interesting to follow reactions there and of course in the comments on the blog. In terms of initial impact this was not Will Muschamp at Florida firing things up. Nor is it the emotional moment of Charlie Strong being introduced at Louisville. The general reaction, though, seemed positive.
I thought, though, that it was a solid performance. Nothing earth-shaking or even particularly revealing. He’s not a publicly firey guy. If you expected or wanted that, then you were disappointed. And man does he have an icy-stare when talking to the media.
I think that stare was part of why the Q&A with the media was so brief. He sort of intimidated them. He struck me as having a bit of Saban-esque contempt in his eyes when dealing with the media.
He’s definitely not Wannstedt in that respect. Not going to be easily warm and cuddly with the media. Going to be an adjustment.
I have to admit, that stare/glare was the most obvious thing that jumped out at me. I can see the players not wanting to face that when they screw-up.
“That’s one of my bad habits,” Haywood said of not smiling. “I get a little too intense when it comes to football, but outside of football I’m probably as laid back as you can get.”
Yeah. I’ll bet.
Other things that jumped out at me at the press conference.
— One of the first thing he did was thank the Miami University for the opportunity and time. He thanked the athletic director and his squad. That was a classy move to immediately acknowledge them. He also spoke directly to the Miami players to let them know he was leaving for Pitt the night before. No having an assistant do it for him. He faced them.
Jordan Gafford, Miami senior safety and co-captain, said Thursday that he and his teammates can understand coach Mike Haywood’s move to Pittsburgh. Haywood met with Miami players Wednesday night in Oxford to tell them of his decision.
“Honestly, I think guys took it very well,” Gafford said. “I think for the most part, guys understand the nature of college football and that it is a business.”
…
Of Haywood, Gafford said: “I’m happy for coach. I’m really thankful for what he did while he was here. He helped turn the program around. The guys coming back understand that Miami is a good job, and they’re going to get a really good coach in here. You come into a program that’s on top of the MAC.”
— His obsession with sleep amused me. He likes to take a nap shortly before the game in the locker room. He also likes to have early morning practices so there is nothing interfering with going to classes. Not to mention early practices make it more difficult for the players to be out too late the night before because they will need the sleep.
— The players are definitely going to get a bit of culture shock. It does seem like one of those NFL coaching swings. Going from the laid back players coach to the disciplinarian coach. Pete Carroll to Bill Belichek. Dave Campo to Bill Parcells. Along those lines.
— When asked about his offensive philosophy, he spoke of creating and exploiting mismatches on the field against the opponent as being a point of emphasis.
But he made it clear that his philosophy always will be dictated by his personnel and what the opponents are likely to do.
“The most important thing is once we understand the talent we have and the opponent we are going against, we create mismatches and try to put our best players against their worst players,” Haywood said. “And, by doing that, you get multiple formations, so we will be a multiple-formation team”
That will be a welcome departure from “Our best 11 guys versus their best 11 guys.”
— He made it clear that all positions on the team are open. There are no presumptions of who will play. Everyone has to earn it.
— There was no mention of winning right away or winning the Big East. It was — I believe — on purpose to not make predictions or add more pressure to the upcoming season.
— Recruiting is obviously important. While stating that he wants to keep guys in Western PA, he also made it clear that he is going to be recruiting in a lot of places. Not sure, but there may have been a total of 13 states rattled off by Coach Haywood.
— Yes, the Freddy Krueger thing is going to get a lot of play.
Now for some good and interesting reading on Mike Haywood from a Miami fan. EDSBS had the must read.
It’s also completely natural for players to decommit after a new coaching hire. They want the new coach to reach out to them and make them feel wanted and if the new coach doesn’t want them they need to let other schools know they are available. It’s a non-issue. With the way Haywood seems to want to run his program he probably doesn’t want a lot of the players that Dave was going to bring in. Dave was clearly selling the best-buddy coach routine. It was getting results. Sadly.
I see a ton of things that can go wrong with the direction of Pitt football with this hire. If all Pitt football needed was discipline as a lot of people state..the could have hired a drill Sargent for 50K a year. Hell every NCAA team would hire one…then we would all be equal. Also..Im sorry..if the rumors are true..a 75yr old OC…really? I love my grandfather..I don’t want him coaching my younger brother. Somehow I don’t see 21-century offensive coming here. Exploiting match-ups…every coach in America says that (except Wanny..so I guess that is a plus).
But..on the other side…no doubt a change was needed. Maybe this is the right guy…I’ll keep my yap shut until next November.
Back to my original point..some people agree with the hire…some disagree. If everyone on this site wants to sit around and sing camp songs together all with one voice in mindless agreement..this blog would suck. That what makes ‘blathering’ (foolish talk) fun. Bitch away people..or agree..your choice.
We’ll see who is right in about 10 months.
You’re not serious are you?
He doesn’t have a couple of years in my mind. The cupboard is full and …………
Oh wait, I’m sorry. My fault, I forgot. I am sincerely so very sorry.
I forgot for a moment (this is going to take some getting use to) that we have “GRAVITATED INTO MEDIOCRITY.”
Carry on citizens, nothing to see here.
Never mind.
By the way, Haywood will be at the Pete for an hour before the basketball game tonight!
I’ll bring tea for his icy stare.
Not sure I meant to say that. I’ll get back to you when I’m less self-confused.
I didn’t think you meant he would knock people over on the way to his seat, spill a drink on Mrs. Pederson and yell to Jamie, “Where did you learn to coach, you idiot?” 🙂
You certainly have a right to your opinions. But I don’t think you’ve been right yet.

If you want a reference, look at WH’s last post. While trying to support you, he/she writes this rambling, incoherent post that actually makes you look dumber by association than I ever could have through direct critique. Assuming Upittbaseball, Frankcan, and WH aren’t the same lonely person propagating their own delusions, you continue to represent yourself as the single most misguided, knuckle-headed negativo we have posting here. I have no problem with debate or opposition. It’s healthy, fun, and when dealing with smart people, genuinely productive and entertaining. Not only are you predictable in your negativity, but you’re contradictory in your logic and you’re baseless in your arguments. You don’t debate, you prognosticate.
You’re the worst kind of fan, for any team, at any level. You’re a misinformed blowhard know-it-all. If you’re not a West Virginia fan masquerading as a Pitt fan just to annoy us, then you are truly the scourge of the Panther Nation. If you actually went to school at Pitt, you are an intellectual and academic embarrassment to the University and you make my degree less valuable with every stupid thing you post here. But by all means, freedom-of-speech these posts until your face turns blue. Because after all, we aren’t communists, we’re Pitt fans.
So… that’s what I have to say about that.
PS: P-I-T-T..Penn State Sucks!
His title for the article sums it up “Just Win” AGREE:), I don’t care how many of Wanny’s recruits decommit, it doesn’t matter how much, or little, Haywood got paid to become our coach, no matter about the discipline issues, who cares if the players walk around in coats and ties. Sh*t, they can stroll around in their BVDs for all I care, AS LONG AS THEY START WINNING FRICKIN FOOTBALL GAMES!!! Therefore Mr. Haywood, show me what you got. Until you prove otherwise I’m in your corner. Last time I checked, as Pitt’s head football coach you are undefeated, keep up the good work!
Winning will indeed be the magic elixir.
HAIL TO PITT!
It simplifies my fandom if I look at this situation from the Administration’s POV rather than a football fan’s POV.
Doesn’t mean I actually agree with everything they do… just that it remove most of my angst when I understand that I’m not the one pulling the puppet strings – they are.
Right after Heywood was announced I went onto PITT’s football main page to look at some our staff coaches Bios… and they were wiped off the roster listing. Not one reference or link to any of the 2010 staff.
See for yourselves…

That spoke volumes to me.
