Pitt will be holding an press conference at 4 pm today to announce the hiring of Mike Haywood as Pitt’s next head coach in football.
I have said before that I am actually intrigued by the hire. I think Mike Haywood may turn out a lot better than the reactions from many.
I am not, however, enamored with how the process went. That has been an incredible turn-off. The actions have only reinforced the perception (or reality) that Pitt is not willing to spend the money to compete in 1-A football beyond a certain level of mediocrity (more on that later in a longer, more rambling post that I am trying to finish).
I can see it now…
Holgorsen “he’s never had any head coaching experience, he can’t run a program, he has no ties to the area, he’ll just leave if he’s successful….”
Golden “he’s record isn’t great, Temple improved because they moved to the MAC, his record vs. winning teams is awful, Haywood’s team crushed him in the championship we should’ve hired him…”
Kevin Sumlin “he went 5-7 this year how is this an improvement, he was lucky to have good cooridnator’s in the past, we should’ve just hired Holgerson”
Tom Bradley “he’s too old, not another defensive minded coach, he has zero head coaching experience, we don’t want him he’s from PSU…”
Austin “no HC experience, not another defensive minded coach, there is a reason nobody have hired him for an HC why should we be the first?….”
The point is every candidate had some very strong points on their resume and they all have holes or question marks as well…no matter what a lot of people would find a problem with any hire….I’m just happy its not Wanny anymore, because any coach that takes an ounce of responsibility and doesn’t baby his players is an improvement

When Haywood states he is looking for Freddy Kruger to play football at Pitt, how will that sell to recruits?

It’s debatable which factored in the most – no doubt DW’s inability to win big games was very important to PITT… but there is no doubt that when DW lost control of the team that helped seal his fate.
